Lion Forge | Roar Comics
Description
All your favorite characters – Zack, Slater, Kelly, Lisa, Screech and Jessie (and Mr. Belding, of course!) – are starting freshman year at Bayside High, trading in brick phones and mullets for iPhones and Twitter accounts. Does Lisa’s fashion show get on the air, and will Screech ever leave her alone? Will Jessie get that A+? And, most importantly, who’s Kelly going to go out with – preppy Zack or new star athlete A.C. Slater? It’s alright, ‘cause we’re saved by the bell!

There is not much for me to say other than the fact that I love the Saved By The Bell show. Though this comic takes place in the present, the characters and the plot were every bit as enjoyable as the show. I am well acquainted with the characters and while reading I was hearing their voices in my head. It was so funny to go back, and the illustrations were awesome. Oh the nostalgia!
I must admit, that I would love to get more into graphic novels and comics, and while normally this is aimed at a younger audience than me, I couldn't resist reading this volume of 'Saved by the Bell' comics. I LOVED this show when I was younger, even 'the new class' that came after Zack and co. - though obviously my childhood crush on Zack obviously means that the original cast were the best :D
While this is nostalgic, it is bought up to date with the huge mobile phones of the past replaced with the slim touchscreen phones you see today, ready for the characters to blog, vlog and use social media, just like we do today. In fact one of the funniest moments in the book is when Zack scoffs at the size of the brick mobile phones from the 80/90's, which may not seem funny in itself but was a nod to the TV series, where Zack Morris himself had such a phone!
The characters are exactly as they should be and while the old references and knowledge of the show are wonderful, the stories are funny in themselves. The artwork is stylish, colourful and vibrant, really popping out from the page.
Each comic is short and sweet, packed full of humour and keeps the essence of what made the show one of my favourites from that time. If you're my age and hadn't watched the show when it was originally on, then you may not get the same enjoyment I did, but if you enjoyed the show, or are a young teenager, then this is a great collection of comics that is perfect for a fun read, that is a great alternative to a short story. This book brings back such great memories; I really really enjoyed it.

I LOVED Saved By The Bell as a kid, and I clicked so fast to request this when I saw it on NetGalley! This graphic novel ended up being a lot of fun to read. I accidentally live-tweeted it since I was having a blast, which you can read here: https://storify.com/WriterCMLloyd/saved-by-the-bell
All the familiar characters from the 90's show are back in a modern setting. Everyone has phones and the fashion is a little less fluorescent/tacky, but the personalities and relationships are all the same. Zack and Slater are still fighting for Kelly's affections, Screech is never going to win Lisa's heart, and Jessie is smashing all the patriarchy. Mr. Belding hasn't had time to grow weary of Zack's Zack-tics yet, but I'm sure that's just around the corner.
This volume has seven stories in it. The first follows their first day of freshman year at Bayside High (complete with the Max!), the second details Lisa's journey into winning a contest with her fashion vlog, Screech builds a dating site for the school in the third story, Kelly tries to get cheerleading recognized as a sport in the fourth which leads Slater to trying out for the squad, the fifth has an American Idol-like audition, the sixth pits girls against boys in a fundraiser to upgrade the computer lab, and the last story surrounds Zack crowdsourcing funds to get Kelly to go on a skip trip with the rest of the gang. There's a fairly equal amount of page time for just about everyone in the main cast.
The stories themselves are funny. There's one place in the "audition" story where Zack has managed to create such a mess about Kelly's bio, and I had to stop and remind myself how to breathe because I was so tickled by the antics. They also have morals in them, but the lessons learned come along naturally and teach about ethics & consent in the Wi-Fi age.
I'm not 100% sure if young adults would be as thrilled with the comics as I was, but I really enjoyed this volume!
This was a cute read. It didn't feel too weird that it was updated to take place in 2015, which was a nice surprise.
Do you remember Saved By the Bell? Well meet Saved By the Bell, but with a present day twist. If you were a fan of the original TV show, you will most likely love this comic. If you don't know Saved By the Bell, but like high school comedies then still check this out. The art style take a little bit of time to get used to, but the story was cheesy and well worth it.
I'm so glad I requested this. Right off the bat, I was impressed by the same style of language from the characters. It really felt like I was reading the show in book form. I laughed out loud like an idiot. Zack was all over Kelly with his typical commentary, Jessie was feministing, Lisa was making fun of Screech, Kelly was adorable, Screech was making his usual jokes, and Slater called Zack "Preppy." I CAN'T, GUYS. The point of the comics are to "update" the show to make it more current and I think that was done well! There's a perfect balance between the classic jokes and cheesiness of the TV show, and bringing it up-to-date enough for newer generations to enjoy.
I like that each issue within the comic is separate so you could really read them whenever; they don't follow too much or too little of a story. Reading in order certainly helps, but it's nice to see a bunch of different stories - like episodes! - throughout the book.
One qualm I have is the fact that the story feels a LITTLE choppy. I know that it will get cut down because of the comic form and the different panels, but the flow was a little off. It's kind of hard to read all of the stories in a row too; it's like watching too many episodes of the show. It can be offputting to have that many "lessons" in a row.
I really loved this graphic novel! It is the first graphic novel I've ever read and I'm a big saved by the bell fan even though I was really young when it was airing originally and loved the throwback to the phone zack originally used in the tv show. Also enjoyed Kevin being in some of the stories and the revamp for a new generation. Would definitely recommend this to any saved by the bell fans or anyone who loves fun graphic novels.
This is excellent! As someone who grew up watching the TV series, this is a great blast from the past that has been expertly recreated for children of this generation. Would be a great easy read for a middle school or a cool nostalgia pick for a high school.
I used to watch Saved By The Bell back in the day so when I saw the comic book I just had to read it and review it.
It is pretty good. The illustrations are good and the story is good. It is updated and I could really imagine all the characters like they were on the show. It sure brought back memories.
This is one I am hoping will continue on because I really want to read more.
This on-point, graphic novelization throwback to the classic TV series 'Saved By The Bell' is updated just enough for today's audience. The artists nailed the main characters and revisits universal themes made popular by the original. These graphic novels are a perfect blend of contemporary and nostalgia.
I loved this! I used to watch this when I was younger every morning before school so seeing its becoming a graphic novel made me so happy! I think it was really well written and close to the show. Some of the drawings were not on point but a majority of them were perfect! I really liked reading this. It only took a little while to get through but I can see myself rereading this a lot! I think anyone that grew up in the 90's would love this one!
I’ve made no secret of my love of Disney and of Comics. In fact, when the two worlds merge, I get super excited. Enter Good Morning, Miss Bliss which led to Saved by the Bell. I’ve made no secret of my love of Disney and of Comics. In fact, when the two worlds merge, I get super excited. Enter Good Morning, Miss Bliss which led to Saved by the Bell. And, since Hayley Mills is the Queen of Disney, it makes sense that the first time I saw it was on the Disney Channel (probably just before or after MMC if I am being completely honest).
So once Miss Bliss was no more, Saved by the Bell took up its much needed slack, and all of a sudden we have Jack Morris, AC Slater, Kelly Kopowski, Jessi Spano, Lisa Turtle and Screech, with copious amounts of Mr. Belding. Enter Lion Forge’s graphic novel, Saved by the Bell. I was given an electronic copy to read in exchange for my honest review. Thanks, Lion Forge!
51wwW9W7q6L._SX321_BO1,204,203,200_Starting from AC Slater’s first day, this graphic novel takes fans of the show (as well as soon-to-be fans) through the various ins and outs of life at Bayside High School. Zack, sensing the new wrestler’s motives to be a little more than friendly toward the object of his affection, Kelly, decides to start pranking AC Slater in the best way. But, there is a little bit of blowback, and soon Zack’s best laid plans to come back to haunt him. Will he ever be able to get Kelly’s attention, or has that ship sailed with the entrance of AC Slater?
There are a few more episodes, including a fundraiser that pits guys versus girls in a cutthroat battle to win a $1000 mall gift certificate. Lisa is the fashion plate, and works at showing her skills around the school as a fashion correspondent. Jessi is her academic/extracurricular machine—the gal has it going ON! And as jocular as Slater may be, Screech shows he is the exact opposite—even when he creates a robot that becomes part of the group of friends. Kelly uses her singing as a way to get her on an American Idol-type show—which, other than Star Search, did not really exist during the time the original show aired.
That’s just a taste of what you’ll find in Lion Forge’s Saved by the Bell. I feel like the art lends itself perfectly for the time period—it is the perfect way for those who saw the show when it aired to share/bond with their kids. There are, however, updates due to the publishing date. For example, the infamous cellphone makes an appearance. If you are unsure about what the Zack Morris-era cellphone looked like—it’s here:
Personally, my favorite Bayside moment is when Jessi has a breakdown—mostly because I kept telling all my friends who didn’t have 4.2 gpas that I would be cracking a la Spano at some point, but they never believed me, but I digress.
Lion Forge is shaking up the graphic novel market by offering a true-to-air Saved by the Bell graphic novel, and it is available now in your favorite format from your favorite retailer—or give your local comic book store some love and pick it up there!
As soon as I heard that there was going to be a graphic novel adaptation of Saved By The Bell I knew I had to get my hands on it! Like many people around my age I grew up watching the TV show (which debuted the year I was born), and in more recent times have found myself laughing along at all of the craziness as podcaster April Richardson discusses the show with guests on the amazing Go Bayside!.
One of the big differences from the TV show is that the graphic novel brings the characters we know and love into the modern day. This version sees Lisa as a vlogger, Kelly auditioning for an X-Factor style talent show, a Bayside High dating website and Screech's robot Kevin as a super computer who can do pretty much anything! At the heart of the story though are those same characters, just as I remember them from the show.
There were also a few little nods to the original setting of the late 80's and early 90's, such as Zack saying 'I can't believe anyone ever used this' about an old-style mobile phone which looks exactly like the one his TV counterpart used. I loved this new take on the characters and thought the transition to the modern day setting was done really well, managing to bring the story up to date without losing the spirit of what made the original series a success.
The brightly coloured illustrations were very reminiscent of the sets and outfits found on the show, as well as in the iconic opening credits. Speaking of which, the pages separating the eight stories found within the graphic novel are each adorned with the Bayside Tigers logo upon a background that is taken from that famous opening sequence.
Whilst it's pretty difficult for me to step back from being a fan and look at the graphic novel from the point of view of someone who isn't familiar with the show, I can still see it being enjoyable for today's teens.
All in all this graphic novel is a quick and super fun read, and is certainly perfect for fans of the show. I hope we'll be seeing a volume 2 soon!
Review will be posted November 27 Saved By The Bell was one of my favorite shows in elementary school, so I decided to check out this new comic book adaptation of the show. The characters from the show are back and they seem to be written pretty true to the personality of the characters from the show, even if their drawings don't quite look like the actors that portray them.
But the thing that I thought missed the mark in this book was that they all had cell phones, laptops, etc. Zack not having his huge cell phone was something that ruined this adaptation for me (though it is mentioned in one of the stories)
Whereas the Punky book I read wasn't as affected by the modern additions, I felt that this story was. Although maybe kids who have never seen the show before will get into it from these comics, they are more like them now.
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
When I saw this available for request on Netgalley, I requested it so fast that my mouse probably got whiplash. I used to watch Saved By The Bell reruns religiously as well as the college episodes and the two TV movies when I was a kid so this trade really made me nostalgic for the my childhood. It was fun seeing something I loved get revamped for this generation! The art style that was used fit in well with the story line of the comics as well as with the old show. It just fit. It was colorful and just plain fun! The story flowed well from frame to frame and was not confusing at all like other comics I've read. I ended up giving this a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
I found this comic collection to be enjoyable and a lot like the show! Each comic issue felt like its own episode complete with cheesy lessons. It didn't tackle some of the hard hitting subjects the original show did but it was fun. It was updated perfectly to make it more relevant to today's tech-oriented teens without losing the original feel of the show. I could literally hear the character's voices in my head and each character's personality was similar to their character in the show. Each issue focused on either Lisa, Jessie, Slater, Kelly, Zack or Screech. I really enjoyed each of the different stories and that it wasn't just one long comic focusing on just Zack. Because, let's be real, we always saw a lot of Zack in the show so it was nice to see more of the other characters. But don't worry! Zack still gets a lot of page time.
I loved that there were some not so subtle references to the show in this trade and each one made me super happy. For example, in the one of the issues, Zack finds an old cell phone from the 90s that was just like the one he used to use all the time in the show to stir up trouble. The "who would ever use this brick?" comment made me chuckle. I will say that my favorite part of this story is still Screech and his robot, Kevin. :)
Am I excited for the next volume? Umm... well, yes! Yes, I am. I'm not so excited that I can't wait for it, but I have a feeling that I'm going to enjoy when I get around to reading it. I'm excited to see what else gets incorporated in from the show!
What a great comic book take on the classic TV 90s tv series. Such a fun update with things like vlogging etc mentioned but all the classic elements from the TV show! More info on goodreads and blog.
Saved by the Bell Comic book was a quick enjoyable read. Sadly I have not see the classic TV show (But it’s on my watch list) I figured this book would be a way to kind of dip into the world. I thought that this would be on long story but it wasn’t there was about eight or nine short stories. All basted around the six main character. The only problem I have with this was there was now real couples. And two of the stories was based on the of the main characters, two of the guys trying to get Kelly. My favorite character would have to of been Jessie we kinda see through the same eyes.My favorite story in this I think would have to be the cheerleading and how it’s a spot. (I believe it is. My sister was a cheerleading in High School and she had to put in long hours and lots of work.)
The art is amazing. The bright colors brought the characters to life. Each character has their own style. The style of the world and the layout made reading all the better! I also enjoy how this was based on a 80's -90's TV but updated into today’s world. The cell phones, tables, laptops, video internet website, ect. But the style and the feel of it has that 80's -90's hit to it. Over all I enjoy this quick read and hope fans of the TV show or of fans of 80's -90's will enjoy this book!
I loved this ebook. It was a bit small on my smartphone, but still readable if you double click the pictures and short enough not to matter too much. Anyone with a tablet or kindle won't have any problems.
The storylines and drawing style are reminiscent of the Archie comics, which is great. And while reading this as a fan of Saved by the bell was enjoyable, the show relies on speed between scenes and audio cues for the humor, so a little was lost there.
Overall, if I saw this in the impulse aisle at Wal-Mart I would probably get it. If I had limited funds and went to the bookstore, I probably would pass on it.
I grew up watching Saved By the Bell in the nineties so when I heard about this book, I knew I had to read it. I think the portrayal of the characters was spot on! The core personalities of each were portrayed on paper perfectly. I like how everything was modernized versus keeping it true to the nineties. It was cool to see old favorite characters and how they would be in today's world, but at the same ages they were in the nineties. The illustrations were lovely - bright, colorful, and engaging. I would absolutely buy, read, and re-read this book and any following volumes.
It's as cheesy as the show; I loved it!
I am a child of the 90's so I was/am beyond a huge fan of Saved By the Bell.
(It's also what I blame when I say high school wasn't what I imagined. But that's another story.)
It was a favorite part of my life growing up; I could never get enough and carried those characters with me. (This was before I invested my time on fictional characters from books.) I couldn't get enough.
Enter so many years later- really it's probably only been a year since I've seen any episodes- and it's now in book form.
Brought into the current era!
Although, really, half the fun of watching now is seeing the 90's styles. And of course Zack's giant cell phone.
He was so cool with that thing!
I don't know if the stories in this book would be typical Saved by the Bell story lines, I never thought things could get anymore wholesome at Bayside, but these eight stories proved that they could be.
But that was the fun part about them.
I loved getting new stories with characters I already knew and loved.
There's no going back to the original but this definitely takes me back in a fun new way,
Given that this remains one of my favorite shows ever, I was cautious to see it in comic book form. I mean, can justice really ever be done to the Bayside gang in print? Turns out it can. It is exactly what I was hoping it would be and brought back wonderful memories of Good Morning. Miss Bliss, Saved by the Bell, the college series, the Hawaiian vacation, and of course The Wedding. As cheesy and hokey as it might have been at times, there are episodes that I still know by heart and I hope my daughter will like the show when she is old enough to watch - because you better believe I have the DVDs. And who knows, maybe she will love the comic form too. Great job!
OMG I loved this. It was so cute and made me happy to see Saved by the Bell in print again. It is one of my all time favorite shows and I feel that it was captured well in comic. There are different ones which makes me more happy instead of one consitant story (I mean that isn't what SBTB is about). I felt like I went back in time to when this was live and I didn't feel so old thinking about the good ole days. (not that I am that old but sister makes me feel that day. Awesome job and I am asking for a copy at XMAs so I can have my very own physical copy. .
Any chance I have to get back together with Zack and the gang, I'll take it. And I loved they chose a graphic novel format, definitely will purchase and recommend.
There was no bigger television series for teens in the early 1990s' than Saved By the Bell. I have fond memories of running home after school just to watch the reruns that ran for two hours (back-to-back episodes on two different channels), and, then, of course I also watched the newest episodes on Saturday mornings. Despite the fact that the series has aged quite a bit (not to mention that it's slightly campy now), it's still aired today around the world.
IDW Publishing released the first Saved By the Bell comic book this year, which gives a complete makeover to Zach, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Screech and Mr. Belding, by moving them from the 90s' to 2015. Yep, they now have iPhones, iPads, tablets, laptops, etc..
Overall, this Saved By the Bell graphic novel is a great way to introduce younger readers to the world of Bayside High School.
I'll be honest, I'm not a huge Saved By the Bell fan but I'd always catch reruns of it on tv early in the morning or late at night so I'm at least familiar with the cast and the storyline. This graphic novel is perfect for big fans of the show. It stuck true to what the show is about and was cute, cheesy and funny. Definitely an entertaining read for those who enjoy the show.
I know how popular graphic novels are with middle school students, so I wondered whether this release would be able to do justice to a well-loved 90s series. The answer is yes. It's true to the original Saved by the Bell spirit. It's a quick, entertaining read.
