A great selection of savory and sweet recipes featuring chickpeas and chickpea flour. Most of the recipes are vegan or vegetarian, but there are a few entrees with meat. Also, many recipes are gluten free. The only negative might be that it is limited to only recipes with chickpeas.
I need to buy a case of chickpeas next time at when I'm at the grocery store. What a wonderful array of recipes to use chickpeas. This cookbook is a winner!
As a chickpea fan I am always looking for new fun ways to use this awesome legume (I hope thats what it is), I loved some of these recipes which are so easy many of them, but also nix new and fun flavors I can't imagine any of these not tasting amazing.
What a great compilation of recipes. Who knew that chickpeas could be used in anything from soups to salads to deserts. The recipes with appealing photos are easy to follow with ingredients most people would have in their pantry . As a vegan, I was impressed with the number of recipes that are meat and dairy free. I also liked that the author portrayed the versatility of chickpeas with the use of chickpea flour in some of the recipes, such as the use of chickpea flour for an egg less omelet. I would definitely add this cookbook to my shelf of favorites.
Chickpeas : Sweet and Savory is truly an inspiration for persons needing chickpea recipes. The introduction was very informative. There was a nice division between recipes as well as good classifications eg - vegan, vegetarian as well as gluten free. I loved the full colour photo's. and the clear instuctions. The ingredients are easily sourced. Thanks to Netgally for giving me the opportunity to review this cookbook.
Nice collection of mostly vegetarian or vegan recipes that all contain chickpeas.
Who knew there were so many things that can be made with chick peas (garbanzo beans). Although the popularity of these beans has skyrocketed with the trend toward hummus – which is available now in every country, in every grocery store, and on almost every restaurant menu – it may be surprising that chick peas can be used in appetizers, soups and stews, main dishes, and even desserts. It has for the last few years been on every list of superfoods, but many don’t realize that they have been popular for centuries in Middle Eastern and Asian countries. Chick peas are an essential ingredient in many tagines and exotic Moroccan dishes, and are a substitute for meat in dozens of vegetarian dishes. Delta Airlines offers a vegetarian sandwich on its London flights that includes chick peas with curry and chutney; frankly, it's quite good (good, of course, when referring to airplane food is relative, but this one is actually edible). Chick peas are often used in Indian vegetarian foods, too, and they seem to go well with the highly spiced curries served in India and other parts of the world.
So why is this book one that should be in every kitchen?
1. There are over 70 yummy sounding recipes.
2. The book has gorgeous pictures.
3. There is a huge variety of recipes, ranging from appetizers, snacks, soups, salads, main dishes, and desserts.
4. The instructions for each recipe are concise and easy to follow.
5. Many of the recipes are vegetarian.
6. Dozens of recipes are gluten free.
7. Each recipe has an explanation, vignette, or timesaving hint.
8. There are recipes from countries from all over the world, and surely something for everyone.
This cookbook is fun, readable, and has lots of excellent recipes. It is highly recommended for every kitchen.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this cookbook.
You really can't go wrong with chickpeas, I am pretty sure I have always liked every dish I have had with them (my favorite being hummus and curries) so a cookbook devoted to it seemed like my kinda party.
I really liked that it had lots of pictures of the finished dishes, this will more or less make or break a cookbook for me, I need pictures because I am a lousy cook, plus I love looking at pictures of food. The recipes are all labelled with vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free symbols, but they also have them next to the names in the table of contents, which is very handy if dealing with food specifications. Also the use of chickpea flour for recipes is pretty awesome, gram flour does not get nearly enough love.
Some of the recipes seem a little, well, silly. Like the chickpeas are just tossed in as extras and not really the focus of the recipe, just added so the recipe could be included. This really struck me in the Miso Soup recipe, it just seemed unnecessary filler. Other than that this book is an excellent addition to a cookbook collection.
So long I've waited for someone to show me how to make the most out of the delicious chickpeas that I buy!
Not a category I normally cover but felt drawn to it due to my love of Hummus. This book contains approximately seventy Chick pea recipes all of which are well laid out accompanied by excellent photographs. Just thumbing through the book gets your taste buds salivating and wanting to try them out.
Although I am personally a vegetarian I found plenty of recipes that were ideal for me or could be easily adjusted to accommodate my dietary preferences. My one niggle really was the books insistence that 'fish burgers' made with Salmon is a vegetarian option. This showed a lack of understanding and made me a little wary of some of the other information offered.
Overall a very good recipe book with wonderful mouth watering photos that I am sure I will keep using.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Charlesbridge for supplying me with a copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
I love chickpeas. I did not know many ways to utilize them. This book is wonderful. I can't believe all the inventive and appetizing recipes. I am so grateful for this book. The pictures make the dishes look yummy and make me salivate. I look forward to making many of these recipes. Thank you.
I was given an electronic copy by Charlesbridge and NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
Chickpeas: Sweet and Savory Recipes from Hummus to Dessert contains wonderful tips and helpful hints, along with excellent visual representations of many of the recipes. This book contains all of the classic Mediterranean recipes that you would expect, including Hummus, Baba Ganoush, and Falafel Balls. However, the author has intermixed the old with many exciting new recipes. The recipes are mostly simple and easy to follow, which proves that delicious food does not have to be complicated. Chickpeas: Sweet and Savory Recipes from Hummus to Dessert is broken down into manageable sections, including Soups and Salads, Spreads and Snacks, and Baked Treats. The author successfully takes a chance with fusion; for example, one of the recipes is for Pasta Bolognese, a classic Italian dish with the Mediterranean addition of crunchy chickpeas on top. A particularly interesting set of recipes include using chickpea flour in desserts, such as Carrot Cake with Tangy Cream Cheese Frosting. This cookbook is ideal for those readers looking to add a little Mediterranean flair to their meals, whether they are just beginning or more experienced.
I am still working my way through the recipes but the ones I have tried have been delicious. I haven't tried any of the desserts yet but I am eager to try them out
I honestly never thought of how versatile chickpeas could be and I absolutely love chickpeas!
So many great ideas to try out and (drooling right now) I can't wait! I know of a few others who love chickpeas as much as I do and this will make such a great gift!
This has got some great chickpea recipes; I never knew you could do so many different things with chickpeas. This book is particularly good if you’re vegetarian or absolutely love chickpeas. I would enjoy borrowing this from a mate or a library, but I don’t love chickpeas enough to purchase it for myself.
This book really surprised me. I lived on a vegan diet for many years so I am no stranger to chickpeas or chickpea flour (MMmmmm). I was also pretty sure I’ve eaten every variation of chickpeas and chickpea flour ever to have been invented. But I was wrong!
I was also wrong about an original assumption I had about this book: this is not a vegan cookbook. It’s not even a vegetarian cookbook. Vegans are so used to subsisting on chickpeas that I never really thought about other diets including them. But this book is truly for everyone, every diet, and should help move those delicious little beans into a more mainstream kitchen, for both family meals as well as gourmet plans.
This is a very elegant cookbook with gorgeous pictures, and mouthwatering recipes. There are chickpea classics such as a Mediterranean salad, and a very flavorful Spinach & Chickpea Quiche which vegans would be familiar with, but will likely be new to anyone else. Non-vegetarian recipes include everything from Thai Chicken to Mediterranean Beef Stew. There is a good use of chickpea flour throughout the book, and if you’re new to this ingredient you should definitely go find some Bob’s Red Mill and get started – chickpea flour has a wonderful, savory flavor, and I try to incorporate it into anything I can.
There is a recipe for “Vegetable Muffins” which is less “vegetable” than it is delicious comfort food, and includes corn, dill, basil and mozzarella (vegans can substitute of course). A recipe for Spicy Sweet Potato Patties is TO DIE FOR.
There are even desserts, with my favorite being the “Surprise Cake”. I have not made this yet, but I cannot wait for a special occasion to do so.
As a former (and still mostly) vegan, it’s shocking to see dairy and animal products included in the recipes, but I cannot deny that many of those dishes still look delectable. However, most vegans may cringe at many of the recipes, so beware. Aside from vegans/vegetarians, this book is for everyone from the beginner cook to the gourmet, and definitely for anyone who likes to sample new flavors and experiment with different ingredients. It’s a bit too specialized for me to use this book every day, but it would still be a valuable addition to my cookbook shelf.
I'm a big fan of chickpeas and never realized how much you could do with them. The book is organized well with pictures of some of the more unique recipes. There are quite a few versions of hummus to make which, in my opinion, all sound tasty. The book is organized very well and easy to read each recipe. I think you would have to really enjoy chickpeas in order to be able to use this cookbook.
Are there really that many uses for chickpeas? It seems if you include chickpea flower, then , yes.
Some great recipe ideas in this handy little book.
This was a very interesting twist on cookbooks and cooking. There were a lot of interesting recipes that go well beyond hummus some more surprising than others. A good purchase if you enjoy chickpeas or trying something new.
What we have with Chickpeas is a beautifully presented cookbook with a very sophisticated list of recipes. Neither health nor vegetarian oriented (though recognizing both within), this is designed to provide a variety of uses for the chickpea - some exotic, others variations on a theme (e.g., hummus), but all quite interesting and well presented. Yes, this is definitely a cookbook for those who like to cook and explore - it has some of the most original/interesting recipes I've come across in the past several years and crosses many cultures.
The book breaks down as follows: Introduction; Spreads and Snacks; Soups and Salads; Entrees; and Baked Treats. The recipes are diverse: vegetable muffins, baked cauliflower patties, Thai chicken, Mediterranean beef stew, pasta bolognese, baba ganousch, stuffed grape leaves, tabbouleh salad, miso & chickpea soup, Moroccan soup with pita chips, etc. Some of the recipes call for whole chickpeas, some for blended, and others for flour. Note that a food processor is a must for a chunk of the book.
Each recipe is beautifully presented and easy to follow: a multicolor page with title, introduction, vegetarian and gluten Free icons (if applicable), ingredients (in italics to stand out), serving size, and preparation/cooking info in simple numbered form. It's exactly what one wants to see in a recipe to make it easy to follow and use. Many, but not all, have a full page photograph afterwards.
What struck me most about the recipes is the sheer depth. There were only a couple items (e.g., hummus) that I was fairly familiar with; most were quite new dishes that look to be fun to explore as I go through the recipes. But of note is that there are also a lot of ingredients that probably are not in the standard North American pantry. So they do require planning ahead and a bit of a search for the rarer items at specialty stores.
The recipes look solid and are easy to follow. Nothing feels experimental here or someone trying too hard to find a random use for chickpeas in order to fill out the book. A beautiful presentation also goes a long way toward making this a delightful cookbook to explore. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
Creative and useful, this is an excellent book option for people that aren't aware of the versatility of this ingredient. I thoroughly enjoyed the recipes that I've tried, and am excited to use some more.
Also a great gift for gluten free or vegetarian friends!
