Description
Josie Blair left Dorset Falls twelve years ago in hopes of making it big in New York City. But after earning an overpriced master’s degree and getting fired by a temperamental designer, she finds herself heading back to her hometown. Her great-uncle was injured in a car accident, and newly unemployed Josie is the only person available to take care of him. Uncle Eb’s wife didn’t survive the crash, so Josie is also tasked with selling the contents of her Aunt Cora’s yarn shop. But the needling ladies of the Charity Knitters Association pose a far bigger challenge than a shop full of scattered skeins . . .
Miss Marple Knits is one of the few businesses still open in the dreary downtown. Josie can’t imagine how it stayed open for so long, yet something about the cozy, resilient little shop appeals to her. But when one of the town’s most persnickety knitters turns up dead in a pile of cashmere yarn, Josie realizes there’s something truly twisted lurking beneath the town’s decaying façade . . .

A Note From the Publisher
First in a brand new series!
Advance Praise
“With a cast of secretive suspects and their sleepy town, Hartwell’s latest skillfully knits together the ideal amateur sleuth novel. The long-standing feud between curmudgeonly neighbors provides delightful humor, and the cozy general store tantalizes with gossip and mouthwatering treats. After a couple of surprise twists and a hint of romance, readers will certainly hope that future books in the series revisit Dorset falls!”– RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars Top Pick
“[A] promising debut…A section of kitting patterns rounds out this appealing crafting cozy.” – Publishers Weekly
“[A] smartly written cozy…Hartwell brings a unique new voice to the crowded field of knitting mysteries.”– Booklist

I read quite a bit of this genre, and I thoroughly enjoyed this. The people are mostly believable and on the whole people you would like to know.. I could quite happily hand sell this in the shop, and hopefully there will be more.
What could be better than a murder mystery tied up with all that yarn? All the talk about yarn made my hands itch to knit but I couldn't put the book down and yet I wanted the story to continue. More please!!!!!
Well done. I hope there will be more to follow in this seriies.
Grumpy older, recovering from injury uncle, small town in fictitious Connecticut, old/new friends, a yarn shop & a murder--what's not to love? I enjoyed reading Yarned & Dangerous. Laughed at/with some of the cast of characters. I am definitely looking forward to reading more.
This book was a pleasure to read. After a long stressful day I looked forward to sitting down and being taken away to Dorset Falls, CT with Josie Blair. Josie who lives in NY goes to Dorset Falls to take care of her cranky old uncle who was injured in a car accident in which his wife died. Her uncle’s wife had a knitting shop that Josie is now responsible to close up. There she will find one of the towns knitters dead over a box of cashmere yarn. There is a murderer loose in town. Can you try to figure out who did it. The only way to know is to read this amazing book. I loved the suspense of trying to figure out who did it. I think you will enjoy this book also, so go out and pick it up!
As a first in a new series, this book is fantastic. The plot is well written with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the end. I love to read books that have crafty elements included in the mystery. The author had many surprise components that made this book difficult to put down.
Josie Blair is an up and coming fashion designer living in New York City. When her mother suggests that she head for rural Connecticut to care for her Great Uncle Eben, Josie is anything but pleased, she hasn't seen her great uncle in years but family is family and Josie reluctantly agrees to go.
Uncle Eben is recovering from an accident which took everyone by surprise and the heavy, awkward cast on his leg makes the crotchety old man even more miserable.
It's up to Josie to help her uncle and sort through the debris that the accident has left behind. This book is a 5 star winner and I look forward to reading more in this wonderful series.
I would like to thank Kensington Books for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.
‘Yarned and Dangerous’ is (I hope) a fantastic start to an entertaining new small town America cosy crime series, really enjoyed reading it! And I do say ‘I hope’ as I wasn’t too sure if it was a stand-alone novel, or the first in a series. It is my desire that it will indeed be the first in a terrific new series as there was just so much potential in rebuilding the high street of the Dorset Falls one murder mystery at a time. I would definitely sign up to read them!
But I might be biased as I am a huge fan of cosy crime… and am *gasp* a knitter! So the whole yarn junkie, stashes, free knitting patterns at the back, fibre talk – all of it just made it a more enjoyable story. Though I will say here and now that I really don’t think you need to be into knitting, crochet, spinning or other hand craft of that ilk to enjoy ‘Yarned and Dangerous’. As long as you enjoy a small town America cosy crime – you will enjoy this story.
I have to say Kensington books are becoming my one stop shop for great cosy crimes series too. Be still my little ‘whodunit’ heart.
Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would, can’t you tell? ;-) Definitely one for cosy crime fans, doubly so for cosy crime fans into handcrafts. And I only say that as they’ll really get a kick out of the free knitting patterns at the back and the cute little stories that come with them… call it a bit of a character glossary through knitting!
Would I buy this book for myself? Yes I would. I will be adding Ms Hartwell’s name to my list of cosy crime authors to shop for and hope to come across more in this series soon.
In summary: If you’re after small town America cosy crime with a twist per inch ;-) … or at least a handcraft undertone – ‘Yarned and Dangerous’ is for you. Loved it, really strongly suggest you go and buy it.
I highly recommend this book for fans of needlework mysteries and cozies. I'm a long-time fan of Maggie Sefton, Sally Goldenbaum, Anne Canadeo, and others who write mysteries about knitting and other fiber arts. This title is offers a fresh approach with a main character with a background in fasion design who doesn't know anything about knitting. I look forward to more titles in the series.
Cozy mysteries are some of my favorite books to read. Before bed I need something interesting enough to keep me reading but not so exciting that I cannot relax and fall asleep. Not every cozy mystery fits those two items. Yarned and Dangerous by Sadie Hartwell hit on both accounts. I have recently taken up crocheting as a serious hobby. While this book has knitting as a backdrop, it was close enough to count for me.
The book follows Josie Blair who has returned to Dorset Falls to care for her grumpy great uncle. I enjoyed the small town aspect of the story as I could definitely relate to that. I did guess part of the outcome of the book from the very beginning. The mystery side was strong enough to keep me uncertain for most of the book. The characters were likable, and I look forward to reading more about them in future books.
disclosure: I received this e-book from NetGalley but was not otherwise compensated for this review. All opinions are my own!
So you wanna mess with the yarn of a good murder mystery? Sadie Hartwell did and I must say I enjoyed this cozy very much. The characters are fun and enjoyable without being too over the top. I loved Josie and the name of the Knit Shop was perfect, especially for us classic murder mystery buffs. The mystery is full Agatha Christie fashion with a plot that weaves itself like the patterns for knitting in the back. A definite series I will return to.
Josie leaves New York City after being fired from her job as a fashion designer and heads back to Dorset Falls to take care of her Uncle Eb who was injured in a care accident that killed his wife Cora. She is also there to help close up Cora's yarn shop, Miss Marple Knits. When a customer is found dead in the shop, Josie decides to investigate. Wonderful mystery and characters, I can't wait for the next one!
