Lawyer William Dysart is an enviable man with a beautiful wife and the ability to effortlessly move through the highest echelons of early twentieth century society. Yet William feels trapped by the expectations of his domineering father and ambitious wife. When William is asked to negotiate the purchase of a small piece of property, he meets Sybil Curtis, a mysterious young woman who politely but adamantly refuses to sell her home. After a number of encounters with Ms. Curtis, William comes to believe that her refusal to sell suggests something that goes far deeper than real estate. As he persists in his attempts to understand her, the mystery surrounding her only deepens, until it begins to strike at the heart of William's carefully ordered world.
