I received this free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
For some reason, I really like novels about natural disasters. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to go through one. But reading about them gives me a doomed feeling, a feeling of survival that is better than any adrenaline story. I think because it's something that can really happen and impact everyone involved.
So I really enjoyed the Hurricane Danielle aspect of this novel.
But I didn't really like the characters of the story all too well... I understand River's issues - I mean a person of authority shouldn't treat students they way this person did and River was really messed up from it. I'm glad things got resolved in that aspect and I shouldn't judge him too harshly, but running outside MULTIPLE times during the storm is insane and he needed to stay inside and safe.
And Jillian is so indecisive. First it was what she was feeling for River even though she is with Aidan. And she did a last minute decision on whether she should follow River or stay put with his father. Jillian needs to make decisions for herself rather than what is best for others. I think she came to that personality by the end of the novel.
So this was a good book. It could have been better, but I've read worse so it's in the middle for me. I'm glad I read an early copy of it and I think a lot of readers will enjoy the storyline.
I also liked that this was based on a true life story...Made it even more eerie!
This was an interesting natural disaster story. I liked that the main characters had backstories that they had to deal with as well. as the weather.
This book was a surprise! Facing a cat 5 hurricane, the choice is to head for away or stay and when roads stop moving, staying is something Jillian finds herself doing because of her next door neighbor, River. River and Jillian have a past that involves chemistry, friendship and trust issues. Now, Jill is forced to trust River as they break into the school to survive the storm. There are so many roller coaster emotions in this book and it is more than a romance, it is a story of survival and facing the demons that haunt us. I found myself engrossed in the description of the event and feel that the author did a wonderful job depicting such a traumatic and horrible situation.
I received this from Netgalley for and Honest Review. I really enjoyed this story. It was really quite different than what a YA romance book normally is. The world was just crazy. Finding out what happens before during and after a hurricane. Its kind of scary. But it was really fast paced. I loved reading about this world its really intriguing. I enjoyed all the characters. Jillian was a bit indecisive but in a way so was River, Poor River had a terrible past. The characters meshed well together. I really did feel the love between the 2 right away. I dont know why but I really enjoy survival stories meshed with love and this was a really good one.
The only thing I would change and I know this is an ARC but it was quite confusing when they went in and out of past and present. That confused me alot, I think alot of YA Romance readers will definately like this story.
I liked this book very much. I wanted to love it. The premise is excellent. Two teens with romantic history trapped together during a category 5 hurricane? YES.
But I didn't grow to love them as much as I'd hoped to. I liked them. I wanted to see them get together. I was curious about River's history. And I enjoyed some of their interaction. But in some places, I found myself going back to the beginning of the chapter to see whose POV I was reading. They spoke in a similar manner, which was distracting.
There were times where one character would remember a conversation from the past only to be followed by the other character remembering the same conversation; it repeated. The internal wasn't compelling enough in some of these passages for me to see why we needed the repeat.
Thank you, Albert Whitman & Company and NetGalley for an ARC of HURRICANE KISS in exchange for an honest review.
