Description
Advance Praise
"Wilson’s book has a clean, attractive design with a portrait and photos that readers can trust – they show the kids at work, on the spot, giving hope, making headlines... Our Heroes will be an excellent choice for discussions among young people anxious to right some wrongs." -CM: Canadian Review of Materials
"[Wilson] beautifully captures each child’s spirit and tugs at my heartstrings. Our Heroes is inspiring, powerful and thought-provoking." - Children's Books Heal
"As a teacher, I have been at a loss, at times, to know what to say when students want me to explain the injustice they see in the world. Our Heroes is an optimistic and empowering book for children who want to make a change." - Rosemary Renton, ETFO Voice (Magazine of the English Teachers' Federation of Ontario)
"This is a wonderful book that can be used to inspire children and adults to treat each other with kindness and do what we can to help one another. The children in this book all followed different paths to make a difference, but the underlying message is that the path you choose is not important but the act of giving is." - Canadian Children's Book News
"The book is informative without being overwhelming....It is definitely inspiring, as well as refreshing to give students role models who are not just celebrities, but normal children that they can identify with." -Kutztown University Book Review
"This book would be a wonderful introduction to community service or to teach students empathy as well as encouraging them to feel empowered and able to make a change in their own small corners of the world." - Literacy Daily

Loved this pretty picture book about kids who are making a difference in our world. The stories are short and compelling and the pictures really draw you into the stories. I think kids are going to love this one.
If you want a good children's book that is guaranteed to impact the reader in a "There are good people in this world" way or to teach kids a lesson in a subtle yet simple way, you can count on Second Story Press to deliver. I've previously read and reviewed Because I Am A Girl, Reptile Flu, Tilt Your Head, Rosie the Red, and Never Give Up that were all put out by Second Story Press and I've not found a single one that I did not think highly of. They have a wonderful collection of writers, illustrators, and editors working with them, and Our Heroes: How Kids are Making a Difference is no different
These biographies are short, simple, and touching, and there are gorgeous illustrations and personal quotes, as well as facts pertaining to each subject the kid made a difference in to accompany each one. Andrew Adansi-Bonnah's story brought tears to my eyes, and because I was reading the book with my child, it led to a discussion about world hunger, starvation, and how we can help. Anything that provokes a discussion with my child wherein I can teach her something is a wonderful thing. If I learn something at the same time - all the better.
Apart from the individual biographies/spotlights on kids, the last few pages (Kids Take Action, Kids Create, and What YOUth can do) give even more brief examples of how kids can make/have made a difference and encourage other youth to reach out themselves.
Overall, Our Heroes is a heart-warming reminder of the generosity of spirit and kindness of the hearts of kids, and that we have to protect and encourage them so that they can transition into being wonderful adults, too. Faith in humanity restored once again.
This book should be in every school library. The examples of children whose compassion and courage to help the less fortunate is truly heartwarming. A feel good book.
This is a lovely book of short, inspiring biographies and stories about children who have done something to help change the world for the better. From 7 year old Taiyo in Canada who raised money to help children in Japan to 12 year old Arti in India who is working to abolish the caste system, the children are helping others in big ways. I think kids will enjoy the book and find it to be very inspiring.
