Description

Winky Lewis and Susan Conley, a photographer and a writer in Portland, tried an experiment. At the start of every week for a year, Winky sent Susan a photograph: of their children, of the street where they live as neighbors, and of other green places in Maine. By the end of that week Susan sent a tiny story back that talked to the photograph. Stop Here, This Is The Place tells the story of a year in which children's arms and legs get longer, and traces of babyhood fade--a year that feels interminable to a ten-year-old looking forward and fleeting to that ten-year-old’s mother, who can always stop here, go back and remember. This delightfully evocative gift book is a reminder to stop and enjoy the precious time we have with our kids while we have them. Through Susan's recollections of moments from her childhood and the ongoing lives of her children, we’re reminded of our own childhoods, and of the necessity to stop and pay attention, to hold on.

Susan Conley, a native Mainer, is the author of The Foremost Good Fortune (Knopf 2011), an Oprah Magazine “Top Ten” pick and winner of the Maine Literary Award for Memoir, and the novel Paris Was the Place, a People Magazine “Top Pick,” Elle Magazine “Readers Prize” selection and Amazon “Big Books for Fall” selection. Her books have been excerpted in The New York Times Magazine and the Daily Beast. She is the co-founder of The Telling Room, a creative writing lab in Portland, Maine, teaching thousands of kids a year (and featured this month in the Boston Globe). She has had pieces in Down East Magazine and is also a TED speaker, a frequent guest on Maine’s NPR subsidiary MPBN, and the Portland Press Herald’s awardee for “Greatest Women in Maine.”

Laura "Winky" Lewis’s photographs are regularly featured in places such as the Boston Globe, Yankee Magazine, and Maine Magazine. Her recent photography book was published by the German Press, Galerie Vevais, and edited by Jock Sturges. Winky’s work with Space Gallery, a Portland hub for art and ideas, has made her a leader in photography in Maine, where she regularly exhibits her work. Features on Winky and her work have also been published in Popular Photography and Maine Home and Design. In 2015, she was named a PDN Photo Annual contest winner.

Two friends, two mothers, two houses.
One photographer, one writer.
One street.
One year.
One family.

Susan Conley (writer) & Laura Lewis (photographer) spontaneously came up with this creative concept of documenting a year's worth of their family's memories. Every week, a photo was taken by one and captioned by the other.

The writing is lyrical, capturing thoughts and musings of the mothers or the children. The fitting accompaniment to the photography.
The photographs have this dreamlike quality, like there are secrets that should only be told in a whisper. Capturing simple, daily moments of these families. They transported me back to my own carefree childhood days.
When nothing mattered.
When everything mattered.

Stop.
Slow down.
And enjoy the small things in life.

This is very cool idea....
From the moment I read the blurp, I was intrigued.

Make sure to READ THE BLURP....( I read it at three different times myself)...
First... I'm curious to ask my friends..."what thoughts enter your mind when you consider what this photographer and writer created?"

Well...I had many thoughts....mostly, something really inspired and charmed me about these two mothers. I not only liked the idea ...( looking forward to seeing their end result), but from the beginning....their creative-partnership moved me.

Now... The fun part...
The 'gems' inside:

The photos and writings were a combination lovely!!!
Warm- sweet - funny - beautiful....

There was a photo of a little girl in a pool of water...
She says....
"The movie I play inside my head is always in color, and the soundtrack is me humming underwater." (Precious photo too)

This book is....."dedicated to all families.....we spin and spin and we don't ever let go"

Thank You Rowman & Littefield, Netgalley, and Susan Conley, (writer), and Winky Lewis, (photographs).....THESE WOMEN ROCK!!!!!

When I first read about this book, I was both intrigued and maybe a little jealous. Years ago I tried to convince a friend to do something similar with me, but they never were interested enough to follow through.

I loved the ease of the writing, reminded me of childhood summer days, moments without a care in the world. Beautiful. Some of the writing emphasized the joy of childhood, and some focused more on those pre-teen years where, you know, parents can’t do anything right.

The photographs are timeless in their capture, a moment in time in the lives of a child anywhere. Universal.

Many thanks to Rowman & Littefield, NetGalley, and Susan Conley, (writer),
and Winky Lewis, (photographs).
