Description
The powerful new novel from Matthew Quick, author of Oscar-nominated THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, is an honest and authentic exploration of love, rebellion and belonging, for readers who loved THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER
From Matthew Quick comes a heartfelt, unconventional and moving novel for readers who love John Green and Annabel Pitcher.
Nanette O'Hare is an unassuming teen who has played the role of dutiful daughter, hard-working student, and star athlete for as long as she can remember. But when a beloved teacher gives her his worn copy of The Bubblegum Reaper - the mysterious, out-of-print cult-classic - the rebel within Nanette awakens.
As she befriends the reclusive author, falls in love with a young but troubled poet, and attempts to insert her true self into the world with wild abandon, Nanette learns the hard way that sometimes rebellion comes at a high price.
A celebration of the self and the formidable power of story, Every Exquisite Thing is Matthew Quick at his finest.

THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!
This was my first book by Matthew Quick and damn did it deliver.
Every Exquisite Thing is populated with the most amazing characters I have ever read, and while the story is at times sad, there is a lot of humour and weird and wonderful chemistry between all the characters that move the story along perfectly.
I will definitely be picking up more books from Quick.
“Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic.”
Every Exquisite Thing is the story of seventeen year old Nanette O'Hare. Nanette has always done the right thing - she gets good grades, plays soccer and generally does what is expected of her. As she drifts through life she feels unhappy and alone. Then one day a teacher that Nanette admires gives her a copy of The Bubblegum Reaper. After reading the cult classic book many times it changes her life. Nanette is full of questions about the book and life in general which leads her to seek out the paperback writer. They become unconventional friends and through him she meets Alex the poet who is also obsessed with the book. Through the book and the people associated with the book Nanette learns a lot about herself, life and love but not all of it has happy endings.
"And then one day you will look for you in the mirror and you'll no longer be able to identify yourself - you'll only see everyone else..."
Nanette O'Hare is an "average" teen who is struggling with her sense of self and place in the world. She is given a copy of an out-of-print book by a teacher which has a profound affect on her and she unexpectedly finds herself trying to answer the age old question of "who am I?".
I'm a little lost for words on how to review this book. I really enjoyed reading it and had trouble leaving it aside, but I couldn't really explain why. I think Nanette and the other characters were able to resonate in different ways, and Quick's writing is clever and emotive. The title of the book comes from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray; " Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic." and there are a number of comparisons between these books.
If you enjoy character driven novels that make you think, then go and pick this up. Perhaps you will be able to express a review better than I can!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
"Just because you're good at something doesn't mean you have to do it."
This one sentence is, in some ways, the epitome of this novel.
I'll just come out and say it: Every Exquisite Thing is a fantastic young-adult novel. A fantastic novel. Period.
Matthew Quick has created very interesting characters, who are imperfect and very realistic.
"Every Exquisite Thing” is a novel that's both sad and optimistic, both inspirational and non-committal.
