Description
Often seen as sad, rejected, and behind cold metal bars, it's no wonder people would avoid images of shelter dogs awaiting forever homes. From talented photographer (and now public figure and adoption champion) Guinnivere Shuster comes Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth, a guaranteed-to-make-you-smile photo book featuring shelter dogs in a brand-new light. Get ready to see the cutest canine portraits you’ve ever seen! Guinnevere’s fantastic photos went viral and have been featured on websites, in magazines, and on television programs all over the world: Good Morning America, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, The Huffington Post, Time, The Daily Mail . . . even celebrities have gotten in on the action: Amy Poehler, Cesar Millan, and Zooey Deschanel have made statements and posts declaring their love of Guinnevere’s work. After the adorable and up-for-adoption photos of these furry friends were seen and enjoyed by millions, adoption rates at Utah's Humane Society skyrocketed.
The book features 100 dog photo booth style photographs, each accompanied by a short story about the dog's personality, how the dog ended up in the shelter, and the adoption date. A follow-up will conclude the book, with photos of some of them with their new families.
A portion of the proceeds of this book will benefit the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society.

This would make an absolutely adorable coffee table book. I loved leafing through this and reading about each adorable dogs journey. As the owner of two shelter cats I loved that this is basically a love story for the shelter system. These dogs are so full of life and love in their pictures and it is amazing that so many have found their forever home. A great book to browse through with such fun and whimsical photography. If you are a dog lover there is no way you can't love this!
I am a huge animal lover. Huge. While I love most animals, I am really very partial to dogs. I am also a really big supporter of shelters and everything that they do for the animal population. My house is pretty filled with animals from my local shelter. We currently have 3 dogs and 1 cat that were all adopted from our local Humane Society.
I don't know why but I love looking at the photos of dogs waiting for their forever homes. We adopted 2 puppies from the Humane Society during the last few months of 2015 largely because of this. My husband has now banned me from the Humane Society's website. Like he can actually stop me. So I look and always feel a little sad that they are there waiting to find someone to love them as much as I love mine.
I kind of feel like this book was made just for me. Each page brought me wonderful pictures of great looking dogs along with a few tidbits about the animal. And the best part.....almost all of these dogs have found their happily ever after! I really loved the last section of the book that showed some of the animals now. Sometimes they were alone, sometimes with their new doggie siblings, and sometimes with their human family but they always looked really very happy.
I would highly recommend this book to animal lovers like myself. I think that it is absolutely wonderful that a portion of the proceeds from this book will go to the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society. I applaud the author for all of the time that she has making sure so many shelter animals have a wonderful photo to help them in their search for a forever family. Sometimes all it takes it a photo to fall in love.
I received an advance reader edition of this book from Andrews McMeel Publishing via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.
I have only just downloaded this book- but what a gem. Anyone who loves dogs will adore this book. It's full of 'photo booth' type shots of the dogs in a shelter with their history where known. Heartwarmingly they all have their forever adoption date and there are photos of their new families at the back.
It's lovely to see them finding new homes and the new life that they all deserve. I could dip into this book every time I need a smile!
Many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for all the smiles today!
My heart is full!
Awhile back I read an article about the author and her efforts to help sheltered dogs find their forever home. I saw this cover in the NetGalley library and had to grab it.
Great picture book with bios on the most adorable dogs with follow up photos after they've been placed.
I have two adopted fur babies at home myself, and if I had the means and the space, there would be many more. I applaud the author's efforts, and am a bit jealous of how much fun doing these photo shoots must have been.
Grab yourself a copy-I'd bet money on the fact that your day will improve greatly!

Fabulous feel good doggy book. Humerous photos taken of shelter dogs in the style of a photo-booth brimming with character. Also included are some updated pics of the happy pooches with their newly adopted family at the back.
I just loved looking at all the photos. My particular favourites were Frodo, Humphrey & Willow.
The only book that could top this would be one of babies!! Buzz takes the cake!!

A beautiful book that highlights the uniqueness of Shelter Dogs in the most heartfelt way. I loved it from the get go, initially because of the intriguing concept and later on for the way it was executed. The only comment i can note: what a shame that there aren't more books like this one, to educate and raise awareness.
The moment i saw this title on Netgalley i knew that i had to get it. No matter what i expected, it ended up being so much better. With impromptu, goofy and adorable photos, a short paragraph featuring each dog's individual journey along with "a look at us now" segment, this book has it all and it makes it hard not to fall in love with those beautiful creatures.
Congratulations to the Humane Society of Utah for the incredible work they keep doing for so many years Because finding a new home and giving a second chance to dogs who otherwise wouldn't have made it, is a real miracle.
Last summer, I accompanied my sister to an animal shelter in Orlando where she was adopting an ancient, condemned one-eyed cat. While I was waiting, I saw a scene I will never forget. A young mentally challenged man was surrendering his beloved dog, an apparent mix of every canine known to man. He explained through his tears that his parents, with whom he lived, had decided they did not want the dog anymore. As the young man drove away, the dog looked around, bewildered, frightened and broken hearted. This book is an incredible attempt to place dogs like the one I saw that day in their forever homes. With photos of dogs, big and small, funny and sad, Shuster includes a little story for each dog, how they got to the shelter, what their personalities are like and when they were adopted. I particularly loved the stories about the dogs who had stories of their own to tell, if only they could find someone to listen. An incredible book that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. ALWAYS adopt from a shelter and get your pets neutered.
This is a great book - wonderful photos, sweet descriptions of each dog, and a clean layout.
Amazing, I can't say I loved this book enough. Dogs are a huge soft spot for me. So I loved everything about this.
Wonderful, sweet and goofy pictures of shelter dogs in a photo booth. I loved them all and am so happy they found their forever homes. The bonus pictures of them with their happy families were great too!
I loved this book. I will be ordering it for my library and for myself. Great coffee table book.

Review: This fabulous photo-book highlights the good work that a humane shelter in Utah does with cute and funny photos of some of the dogs to have passed through its doors.
Also included is a short description of the dog and the reason why they were given to the shelter. I've got to honest, reading these always makes me angry - people giving up their pets because they are moving or the puppy was too boisterous or playful, taking up too much time - seriously, you got a DOG what did you think was going to happen?! - are all too commonplace and it makes me despair in the human race.
On the other hand, hurray to all the dogs' lovely new owners who gave them the home and love they deserve.
This book is a must have for dog lovers, especially all those who have rehomed rescue animals (cats for me!).
Having a bad day? Feeling a little down? This book will turn that frown upside-down. This is the perfect coffee table book full of not only beautiful, hilarious photo booth style photos of dogs but also heartwarming stories about how they made it out of the shelter life. This is a perfect gift book for any passionate dog-lover. I enjoyed it greatly and give it a hearty 2 thumbs up.
A perfect coffee table book and the perfect present for dog lovers. The beautiful Polaroids captures the natural happy disposition of all these now homes gorgeous dogs. It's a book I'll keep going back to just to look through all the beautiful pictures. Will be purchasing a hard copy and recommending to all!
Beautiful photos of dogs hamming it up at an adoption center. Each dog has four portraits and a short description of their personality and adoption date. The dogs are a variety of ages and personalities, from just under a year to seniors looking to live out their golden years in a loving home. My kids really took to this book since our beloved Elwood died in the summer. They especially loved Sully, the Saint Bernard as big as a horse. A few families turned in photos of their new family member enjoy life in a loving home. A great coffee table book for every home. I received a copy through Netgalley to review however I would love to purchase a hard copy upon release.
What a great way to brighten up an otherwise gloomy winter day. I have been stuck at home because my car has been engulfed in a gigantic pile of snow.
As a girl who grew up with dogs and someone who has adopted dogs of her own, I absolutely adored the pictures in this book. I hope this becomes a big success and encourages people to take home one of these heart-warming, loving shelter animals and leave the puppy mills to go out of business. As I admired the photographs, I was smiling and yet a part of me is upset that people don’t consider that this part of their family should be kept and treasured for as long as they live.
If you are animal lover, why not buy an extra copy of this for the break room at work or your local library.
I loved this book! I have volunteered before for one of our local shelters and there was someone who came in and took great photos of the pets. This absolutely did help some of the cats and dogs get adopted. The photos were often posted on social media and helped to raise awareness of the great personalities of shelter pets. Loved these beautiful pictures from this book. Highly recommended!! 5 stars.
What a wonderful way to brighten up and cold winter day. I love the idea behind this book and how it shines a light on shelter dogs. All of the photos put a smile on my face and I loved the little bios on the dogs too. There is roughly 100 dogs featured and each one is unique and adorable. You get find out when they were adopted and my favorite part was that you get see some of them after they were adopted as well, which was amazing.
If you're an animal lover than this is a great read. It's quick and will put a smile on your face. Plus, they will donate part of funds from each book towards the Utah humane society, which was a big bonus for me.
I LOVED this book. It is a great idea to show people looking for a dog to check their local shelters. When dogs are locked up and scared they don't always make great first impressions. The idea behind this book helps to show them for the lovable, sweet babies they are. I help out our local rescue group and have adopted 2 beautiful dogs from them. I can't recommend this book enough to people. I hope other shelter/rescue groups take a page out of this book and use it to help find loving, furever homes for so many that need it. I wish I could give Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth more than 5 stars but that will have to do.
Five stars because I love dogs. I especially love recue dogs. I am on my second set of brother/sister rescue dogs. Stories of successful foster and forever homes for such loving creatures always bring tears of joy to my eyes.
This book is the perfect coffee table book; humorous, entertaining, touching. The cleverness of having dogs pose in a photo booth is brillant. Just like humans posing in a booth, these dogs show their silly side, sensitive side and even scared side, winning the hearts of their future family.
I hope this book inspires many to adopt from a shelter. There are so many dogs ready to love and be loved.
I absolutely adored this book! It was so wonderful to see these dogs happy and it was so neat to see their doggy personalities come out in these photos! I love the photo booth idea and I especially enjoyed all of the photos where the dogs were catching bacon! LOL! I have a friend who is part of the SASS Rescue and I am going to buy this book for her birthday! What a fantastic way to raise fur baby rescue awareness! Beautiful photos and just a super fun book, that will leave you feeling good!
Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth by Guinnevere Shuster is a delightful and uplifting book of dogs from a shelter in a photo booth. Page after page of the most unique and mesmerizing poses of dogs of all sizes, shapes, colors, and breeds. The images are crystal clear and each image is so special. Each dog has four images each and each picture is a hoot! I bet they had so much fun picking through all the pictures for this book. The book is arranged nicely with the dog's brief, creatively written, backgrounds. This is listed with each dog to fill the reader in on these wonderful pups. At the end of the book, some of the dogs are shown as they are today with their new families.
My heart felt good reading this book, I smiled all the way through it. What a perfect gift for someone who thinks they have everything, for those who love animals, or those that need a pick-me-up. Lovely book! I received this book for a honest review from NetGalley and it in no way effected my rating or the content of my review.
Great book, great photographs. Show a shelter dog a little love, and wow do they light up! I am so happy that all the dogs have a new home or are about to. Hopefully this book will raise awareness about homeless dogs, shelters, reasons people should not get s pet ( if you can't take care of a pet for its entire life please don't get a pet! ) . Maybe shelters can get some ideas from it to help the, get pets to their new furever homes.
I also love that part of the money goes to help dogs in shelters. Great book, has info on each dog as well.
I totally love this book and it's already on my Amazon wishlist to buy! I wish I could take pictures of shelter dogs like this wonderful photographer, to be able to help the dogs in this way is such a wonderful idea.
The pictures of all the dogs were funny, sweet and so darn cute. The author even gave a little synopsis of the dog at the bottom of their pictures. I won't go into that too much as people make me so mad, and lets just leave it at that.. oh and please research a dog before you get one to see if it fits with who you are and your lifestyle so we can help keep them out of shelters!
In the back of the book, the author added a few pictures of the dogs that have been adopted, I wish we could have seen pictures of all of them in happy homes :-) I do hope all of the ones adopted got to stay in the home that chose them.
Once again, the pictures of these beautiful dogs are amazing and some really funny. I enjoyed this book immensely and like I said, I do intend to buy it when it comes out, not only because of the beautiful pictures but also because the proceeds go to the Utah Animal Shelter where these pictures where taken and Best Friends Animal Society where I have been a member for years! :-) Kudos!
*I would like to thank Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*

4.5 stars. I saw lots of people rave about this book on Twitter, sharing a few of the images from the book. Of course my interest was peeking. Cute dogs? Photographs? Silly photographs? So when I saw this book on Netgalley I just knew I had to get it. :)
And this book was even more than I thought it would be. My thought was that it would be pictures only, but no, instead we also get some information on the cute dogs + if they got adopted. Which I loved.
It just gave the dogs something extra, learning about their old family, about their personalities and at times how they got adopted. It was also fun to read how fast they got adopted. Some got adopted in the wink of an eye. And then there are a few that are still waiting.
The stories really warm one's heart, and then those cute (and at times just hilarious photographs) made me go "Awwww" every time I scrolled to the next page. Because with each page there was more cuteness.
I also loved that it was a blend of different ages. Not only puppies, but also older dogs. Or dogs that were sick. Everyone gets a chance to shiny in the spotlight.
And I definitely loved the last part: Look at us now. Which shows us photographs on how the dogs look now. :D It was really a delight to see all the dogs happy and healthy and with their new families. Love that this was added!
This is one book I would highly recommend to everyone! Don't skip this one. Though you might get an overdose on cuteness. ;)
Well OF COURSE I had to take a peek at this dang thing. And a portion of the proceeds go to charity????? You can bet your ass I’ll be buying a copy of this one for the coffee table. There's not much to say about this little book - it's pictures of dogs taken in a photo booth with a little blurb about how they ended up in the shelter along with their adoption date.
If you haven't considered adopting a dog, there's probably something wrong with you. Ha! I keed. Sorta. Seriously, though, shelter dogs are the best. Just look at some of the great personalities you can find if you take a look.
Anywho, this is a great little book for a great cause.
I would be remiss if I didn't share my own shelter dog. Many of you know that I have an affinity for undead pets. For maybe the only time ever those critters will not be the focus of the images contained in this review. Today I take my inspiration from the book and present to you MY shelter dog, Harvey. While Harvey may not be the BEST dog ever (he eats his own poop and humps the cat incessantly), I couldn't imagine life without him. Welllll, sometimes when I'm trying to read and the kids aren't home I might let my mind wander a bit . . . But aside from those few hours each week, he's pretty great. Man's Boy's best friend and all that jazz : )
ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley!
Love it! I'd seen some of these images online, but really enjoyed seeing all of them. It's so emotional seeing the personalities of these dogs who have been abandoned, and wonderful to see that they have been adopted. I loved seeing their "after" pictures, too, with their new families. Great book.
Heartwarming and delightful, a keeper, plus some proceeds help 2 animal charities. Dog lovers know how pets cavort; the adorable adopters featured here are photogenic while clowning for the camera, for certain! The author includes a piece on each of her delightful dog subjects.
What wonderful pictures of very beautiful dogs. I felt I wanted to adopt them all, thank goodness the found homes. I never knew that dogs could have such goofy expressions, their personalities certainly shone through. I love the idea of the photo booth, it really makes the dog come alive and such fun - not like the photos you get generally that try and make you guilty to adopt. These dogs full of personality, and just by looking at the photo, you can picture them in your household.
As a dog lover, I MUST have a printed copy of this for my coffee table. This volume is filled with fun, candid snapshots of shelter dogs: complete with a story telling about their background.
As the unofficial photographer for my partner's German-Wirehair Pointers, I know how difficult it ts to get great shots of pups. Shuster might have the right idea....just take crazy, zany shots.
The best part of this book is the happy ever after stories and photos shared in the back.
Disclaimer: I was given an electroic version of this book from NetGallery in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Epic Photos for an Awesome Cause
Every year, approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters; of these, 3.9 million are dogs. Roughly 35% are adopted, while another 26% are reunited with their families. The remaining 26% are killed, usually for lack of homes.* This translates to a staggering 1.2 million dogs (not to mention 1.4 million cats) per year.**
Given the overwhelming scope of the problem, animal shelters and welfare groups have gotten pretty darn creative in their rescue efforts – aimed at both placing animals in homes, as well as preventing them from entering the system to begin with. For example, some groups offer grants to low-income pet owners who are facing unexpected veterinary bills. Others provide free or low-cost checkups and spay/neuter services to those in need.
Nonprofits that focus on humans have gotten into the act as well. With an increasing awareness of the link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence comes programs that cater to both human and nonhuman victims. For instance, domestic violence shelters are starting to open their doors to the companion animals of their human clients, as a sizable percentage survivors refuse to leave their furry friends behind.
(I volunteer as a foster home for one of two such groups in the Kansas City area, and it’s extremely rewarding. In particular, I find it easier to foster dogs who already have homes. Don’t get me wrong, I still fall in love with them, but at least I know I have to give them back. Otherwise I’m likely to adopt myself out of fostering in no time flat. Anyway, I cannot recommend it enough.)
In a similar vein, there also exist programs that place the companion animals of deployed and injured/recovering service members in foster homes (usually for three months up to a year or more). Ditto: regular civilians facing unexpected hospital stays. Other groups advocate for service members’ rights (such as fighting breed bans on military bases) and provide financial services when needed. Initiatives like these help keep beloved companions out of the shelter system, free up kennel space for truly homeless or unwanted animals – and keep families together in the long term. It’s a win-win. (For more information, start with Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet, PACT for Animals, and Dogs On Deployment.)
With the advent of the Internet, online profiles have become an important tool for animal shelters and rescue groups. An entertaining, informative profile – on Petfinder, Adopt a Pet, and/or the group’s own website – is a must. Bonus points if you can include one or more professional photographs that highlight the animal’s unique personality. (Some dogs even star in their own videos or have Facebook pages or Instagram and Twitter accounts!) Luckily, photographers like Guinnevere Shuster are stepping up to help. Whether volunteering their talents to local shelters, matching their colleagues up with rescues in need, or raising the money to buy photography equipment for open-admission shelters (see, e.g., The Perfect Exposure Project), photographers have so much to offer. (So if you are one, please think about volunteering? Pretty pretty please?)
Guinnevere Shuster began photographing adoptable animals her junior year of college; to date, she’s had more than 6,000 models. The dogs found in SHELTER DOGS IN A PHOTO BOOTH all called the Humane Society of Utah (HSU) home, if only for a short time. They were picked up as strays; surrendered by owners who didn’t have the time or money to care for them; given the boot by their family’s landlords; rescued from a life on a chain; displaced by a death in the family and grieving their humans; or transferred in from other shelters. HSU is an open-admission shelter that doesn’t limit the length of time an animal can remain in the program.
The book features four photo booth-style pictures of 105 dogs; each set is accompanied by a brief paragraph about the subject. At the end of the book, we’re treated to “where are they now?” follow-ups on 17 of the lucky pups. All of the photos were taken in 2015, mostly in the latter half of the year. All but one of the dogs has been adopted; Willow is still in foster care, being treated for mange.
With the help of peanut butter, Beggin’ Strips (a few of the dogs appear in IG ads for the treats), and a whole lotta patience and goofiness, Shuster’s photos are at turns silly, serious, playful, and soulful – but always stunningly gorgeous. It’s hard to pick a favorite, though it seems only fair that cover dog Buzz should be taken out of the running. (He did already land the cover, you know?)
Personally, I’m partial to Wallace; not only do I have a thing for tripods, but his missing eye reminds me of my late dachshund, Ralphie. Tater Tot gets an honorable mention, if only because I’ve fostered a few really rad Yorkies and he reminds me of two of the three. Okay, okay. Just one more! I have to include Atticus, otherwise the ghosts of my childhood dogs Bucky and Cap (as in Captain America; my dad named ‘em) will haunt me for sure. They were St. Bernard/Collie mixes and just the best dogs a girl could ask for.
I also love that Shuster includes dogs who typically have a harder time getting adopted: pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs; mutts (though there are quite a few purebreds to be found here!); adult and senior dogs; tripods and otherwise disabled dogs; “ugly” dogs (don’t worry Willow, I think you’re beautiful!); black dogs; there’s even one bonded pair! (I’ve adopted two bonded pairs now – Kaylee & Jayne and Mags & Finnick – and it’s the best feeling in the world. Like adopting one dog, but while riding a unicorn over a rainbow after a glitter storm.)
Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth has been compared to UNDERWATER DOGS, but I find it more reminiscent of Melissa McDaniel’s work. Each book in her series, THE PHOTO BOOK PROJECTS, highlights a different group of overlooked or marginalized dogs – DEAF DOGS, RESCUED IN AMERICA, PIT BULLS & PIT BULL TYPE DOGS and PUPPY MILL SURVIVORS – with the ultimate goal of raising awareness and encouraging prospective guardians to adopt.
I was lucky enough to snag an early copy of SHELTER DOGS IN A PHOTO BOOTH in ebook form, but I plan on buying a finished copy for my shelves (and maybe one for my mom, too!). The photos are all that and a bag of chips, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit HSU (where Shuster works as the social media coordinator) and Best Friends Animal Society.
In the parlance of We Rate Dogs, 1155/1050 chill AF would pet vigorously.***
* I won’t sugarcoat these killings by categorizing them as “euthanasia” – unless done in the animal’s best interest, e.g., if she is physically ill and beyond help, these are not mercy killings, but murder.
** Statistics via the ASPCA.
*** That’s 11/10 points per dog, fyi.
(Full disclosure: I received a free ebook for review through NetGalley.)
By now, most animal lovers have seen or heard of the photos of shelter dogs taken in photo booths. “Shelter Dogs In A Photo Booth” is a collection of these photos, along with the stories of how they came to be in the shelter and their adoptions.
It’s wonderful to get to see the dogs’ personalities show through. All too often they cannot show their true nature in shelters, and it causes many wonderful animals to be passed by. The photos are a true delight and the book will make a great addition to any animal lover’s collection. It is also a wonderful gift idea for those in your life who have dogs.
An added bonus is that a portion of the proceeds go to the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society. If you’ve never heard of the latter, it is the home of the Vicktory Dogs who were unable to be adopted for various reasons. The ones who were adopted went through rehab there and much was learned about how to rehabilitate fighting dogs, which will save many lives in the future. The work they do is extraordinary.
Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth is a beautiful coffee table book, assembled with a lot of love. Through her photographs, Guinnevere Shuster has captured the heart and soul of nearly 100 dogs rescued and later placed in forever homes.
Unfortunately, many dogs are surrendered to shelters each year by owners that cannot continue to give them the love, support and adequate homes they deserve.
I was especially moved by the photos in the last section of the book showing these precious pups with their new families.
Best of all, a portion of the proceeds of this book benefit both the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society.
I was lucky to receive an ARC copy of Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth from the publisher through NetGalley.
Lover shelter Dogs. Except for one, we have always got our dogs from shelters or rescue organization.
This book showcase adorable & adoptable dogs. I love that this is a project that benefits animal rescue. This is a cause that I have at heart, I love animals and this is the kind of project that I would love to see more of. Through photography, Guinnevere let their true personalities shine in a photobooth. They are the cutest dog portraits, this book will win the heart of all dog lovers. All the dogs have found a new families. For each dog there is the story of how the dog end up in the shelter and the adoption date. This is truly an awesome book, I would recommend it to any dog lover. This is a gorgeous book to keep on your coffee table.
I got this book from Net Gallery for review, all opinions are my own.
This book make you smile on any given day. A must book for any dog lover.
Very cute book designed to help shelter dogs get a home. What a tremendous idea. I loved this one!
It is such a cute book.
The pictures of the dogs (plus at the end of the book, we can see them in their new homes) are simply beautiful and funny. ☺ In every page, we learn their stories, how they ended up in the shelter and the dates of the adoptions.
As a dog owner, I enjoyed so much for reading & commenting about the book. There are many dogs (and cats too) waiting in shelters for suitable homes. The book points out the importance of adoption.
Sweet book that will bring a smile to your face every time you open it. All dogs lives matter and that shins through in these photos.
for fans of dog photos and/or dog rescue stories--sales of this book benefit the Utah Humane Society, so you really have no excuse not to pick this book up now.
This book made me bawled so hard. I can't help but imagine the dogs when they were being left at the adoption center; thinking that their families are bringing them on a trip but got left behind. Thankfully there's shelters such as Humane Socitety of Utah are around to take them in until the next permanent families to them in.
I've never been a dog person but after reading this, I'm a changed woman. The dogs pictured are so beautiful that I just wanna give them lots of hugs.
Towards the back, there's a 'Look at Us' section. At this point, I'm crying happy tears. They looked so grown up with their forever families.
Loved this book especially as the owner of 2 shelter dogs!
Super sweet pictures of dogs living in a shelter who found their forever homes. The pictures are great in that they show the personality of each dog. Taz is my favorite! The book gives just a bit of info on each pup. I also loved that it showed some of the dogs with their new families. Happy endings!
This book is a heartwarming tribute to the dogs who have made it through the shelter system with smiles (actual smiles captured on camera) and were adopted. Annotations with each dog's images let the reader know that life turned out okay for each animal. The images are well done, often hilarious, and provide the reader with an audible "aww!" moment.
This charming book showcases 100 shelter dogs at their cutest. Each dog was available for adoption from the Humane Society of Utah and has a series of four photos showing off a bit of their personality along with a story about their lives. In almost all cases, the book also includes a note about their adoption (thank goodness, or I would have wanted to adopt them all). The final section of the book shows photos of some of the dogs with their forever families. What this book lacks in written content, it makes up for in adorable pictures making it a great coffee table book for the dog lover in your life. A reminder that all our four legged friends deserve love and a chance at a forever home - this book is a surefire win, especially for those in your life who have rescued their own canine companions.
Insiders know that shelter pups make the best pets, but often it is difficult to see their personalities as you browse the cages at a shelter. Guinnevere Shuster's beautiful pictures demonstrate the vibrant personalities of a wide variety of dogs at the Humane Society of Utah. Each page holds four candid pictures of an adoptable pup. Often hilarious or stunningly cute, Shushter's pictures show dogs filled with hopeful energy, ready to have a new chance at a happy life. There is even a section of pictures at the end where some of the dogs who were adopted are shown with their new families.
Dog pictures that are adorable and funny and stories with happy endings - what more could a dog lover ask for in a photo book? I absolutely loved Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth. It is a book guaranteed to make any dog lover smile.

I loved this charming book and the dogs in it. It absolutely makes you want to go out and adopt a dog to bring home with you! Shuster is kind enough to let us know with each of her portrait subjects that they have found a family (most of them) or are still waiting with a kind foster family or shelter staff, so readers don't have to worry about the specific dogs in this book.
What a fun look at shelter dogs. As the proud parent of three rescue dogs, I know the capacity for love that these animals hold. The only improvement for this collection is that different poses would make it more entertaining.
This book is amazing! I may have shed a tear or two! There are two dogs that are included in this book that I really would bring home today if I could. I have a female pit bull that is my baby girl. If she would allow me to get a second dog I would definitely adopt a shelter dog! I adored the before pictures and was so extremely grateful to see the after section! Simply amazing work!
This book was absolutely adorable and very well photographed. The moment I saw the cover I was won over immediately. I had to read this book! I had to find out about this adorable dog on the cover! Once I opened it I was given the wonderful gift of learning about the many dogs that had come and gone at the Humane Society of Utah. I have been surrounded by dogs and other animals my entire life and it was a pleasure to get to see photos and hear the stories of these dogs that were given loving homes. While they were all sent there for one reason or another the workers and volunteers at the Humane Society worked tirelessly to find homes for them. This book was a breath of fresh air and any book that would give a portion of its proceeds back to help more animals deserves a good review from me.
Sweet expressive pics of dogs that help them to find their forever homes--what's not to like? Also really enjoyed the happy tales at the end, featuring some of the dogs in their new homes
The pictures were adorable and the work the Utah Shelter is doing is just amazing. This will make you tear up if you are as big of a mush as I am. Just imagining those poor dogs that DON'T get saved when you see the beautiful and loving dogs that are saved in this book will choke you up and make you want to adopt ALL THE ANIMALS EVER.
So be warned, don't read this and then go to PetSmart. You won't leave alone!
4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 for the incredible things that shelter is doing. Also, proceeds from the book go to the shelter, so buy this book, save a life! :)
My thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
I love reading books about animals and that's why this one caught my eye. This book is made up of photo-booth style pictures taken by Guinnevere Shuster of dogs that were in the Humane Society of Utah. Shuster is a professional photographer and the social media coordinator at the Humane Society of Utah. Using her photography and media skills, she wanted to help otherwise often overlooked dogs find forever homes. The dogs were apparently not selected at random and she tried to focus on dogs that may have needed a little extra help getting adopted or that didn't do well in a shelter setting.
There are four pictures of 100 dogs, capturing the dog's personality. Under the pictures is a brief description of the dog such as why it was turned in to the shelter, its personality and its adoption date. The pictures are really cute. The dogs are especially focused where there is a treat involved. There are also pictures of some of the dogs in the "forever" homes.
A portion of the proceeds of this book will benefit the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society.
This is going to be a short review, Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth is a collection of pictures of, well, shelter dogs as though their pictures were taken in a photo booth. These pictures bring out so much of the personality of each dog. These have been adopted, these are all success stories. Please, if you have any thought of getting a canine companion consider a shelter dog. The shelter you visit may not have these types of beautiful photographs but the dogs will each have personalities as big as these dogs. Look past their unfortunate surroundings to how they will blossom when in a loving home.

Loved this book and immediately ordered it for my library. Great photos. Happy stories. What more could a dog lover want?
I would like to thank Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
If you like dogs, let me highly recommend this book to you! The animals in this book are absolutely adorable, and the mission behind this book is one of love and hope. I am in awe of the pictures of the dogs in this book. Even though they were living in a shelter environment at the time their photos were taken for the main part of this book, you cannot tell. They look like the happy, sometimes goofy creatures they are, and their personalities really shine through.
This seems like a wonderful idea for any shelter - especially one that is having trouble moving some of their animals out of the shelter. Have their pictures taken in this "photo booth" type setting, and let their personalities shine through, rather than just the sadness of being behind bars for most of the day.
The really nice part about this book was that it was so upbeat. The book shares the date of adoption for each dog, and a small story about how/why the dog was brought to the Humane Society of Utah, where the animals were all sheltered at, or fostered from, and then a small blurb on their personalities.
This would make a wonderful coffee table book, and I hope to have more books like this come out in the future, with more happy tales of adoption.
The really great thing about this book is the place where the animals were at. The Humane Society of Utah is, according to the book, an open-admissions shelter, and there is no limit to how long an animal can stay there while waiting for adoption. There is more information than that about the shelter in the book, and I definitely recommend looking into their program, because they sound absolutely excellent.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I am never compensated monetarily for my reviews.
Shelter Dogs in a Phone Booth by Guinnevere Shuster No sad lonely and unkept looking dogs behind bars, Shuster lets the each dog's unique and sometimes goofy personality show through in each picture of the four. These lucky dogs are among the 6,000 shelter animals the author has photographed. Personalities shine. Even the black dogs, often both difficult to photograph and hard to place in new homes, are delightful. No wonder adoption rates at Utah's Humane Society skyrocketed.
Each of the 100 photo-booth style photographs includes a short story about the dog, how the dog ended up in a shelter, and the adoption date. The final pages show photos of some of the dogs' happy endings with new families.
Look closely and you'll see one of Shuster's "tricks." A few photos show pieces of bacon flying through the air. This explains the number of open mouths, intense stares, flapping tongues (actually a lot of flapping tongues), and some adorable drool.
My personal choices are Goofiest: Koda, a German Wirehaired Pointer; Most Charming: Diego, a pit bull terrier; Best Howling Pose: Rose, Bloodhound; Most Enthusiastic High Five: Gus, black Labrador; Most Adorable Gentleman: Duke, Wheaten Terrier ; Fabulous Ears: Coco, Miniature Pinscher mix; Most Kissable: Milo, spaniel; and Best Overall: Old English Sheepdog Bliss (just because).
Guinnevere Shuster, a life-long pet adoption champion, began photographing shelter dogs as a volunteer and now has a full time career with the Humane Society of Utah, giving each dog the attention that hopefully leads to adoption. A portion of the proceeds of Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth benefits the Humane Society of Utah, an open admissions shelter with no set limit on the length of time pets may remain in the adoption program, and Best Friends Animal Society.

So flipping adorable!! I could look at these pictures for hours. If you are a dog lover this book will make you so happy! And you will be supporting a great cause.

I love, love, love this book! It is paw-esome. It's only 128 pages but each page features a dog! I just wish it was bigger because I can't get enough of all those stinking cute face!
This pictures showcase the dogs personalities. More shelters need to go this route so that the public can see them shine rather then shiver, shake and act out in fear while enclosed in an unfamiliar, loud place.
This book gives a very brief description of why the dog ended up in the shelter, four snap shots and adoption date! My favorite part is the end where you get an update on some of the pups!
I selected one of my favorite snapshots to give you an idea of what is in this precious little book. I promise the pics in the book look way better, my camera did something funky! Go out and pre-order for purchase your book now. Buy one, two or more for fellow dog lovers.
As an owner of former shelter dogs, there was no way I could bypass this. Featuring 100 shelter dogs showing off their unique personalities in a set of stunning photo booth pictures and each with a little biography, this was utter cuteness overload. Some of the proceeds of this wonderful book go towards the Best Friends Animal Society and the Humane Society of Utah. It's a perfect gift for dog lovers or simply an eye-catching coffee table book. There will also be a wall calendar published, which I had to pre-order right away. Our Jack Russell is now 18-years-old and there has been some talk about trying to see what life in an upcoming dog-free household could be like.....yeah, so not going to happen. One look at the pictures and the stories in this lovely book and I can see another trip to a dog shelter in our future. Many thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing for my copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love that this book gave a face to shelter dogs and how wonderful pets they can be!
When I saw this book in NetGalley I knew that I had to read it!! I am dog lover, I can't remember a moment in my life without a dog(well, maybe when four of my dogs died almost at the same time :c) , even when I was a child I wanted to have a shelter for animals with my best friend, so I definitely loved this book. The pictures of the dogs were absolutely amazing and made me laugh so hard, and their stories were fantastic as well
This is such a great way to be able to visit the pet shelter without coming home with another dog! I love being able to explore all these great dog faces and look at their beautiful eyes. And I especially love seeing the last section of the book where the dogs are in their new homes and with their new owners. Toward the end, there's a contented dog named Sully who is wearing a plaid shirt that I believe belonged previously to his new owner. Sully looks charming in a man's shirt, and that looks like doggie love and happiness to me. What a wonderful, cheery book!
Photobooks seem to be getting more popular these days, and with gorgeous, heartwarming stories such as this, I'm sure this will be a bestseller. Each dog is given four photos which really show his or her unique personality, and a small blurb with their name, story, etc. Somehow, Ms. Shuster manages to use just four photos to really connect the dog with the viewer, with her amazing photography. A must-read, and a recommended buy.
Those faces! Just....those faces!!!! I can't even.
If you didn't love shelter dogs before, you are going to be hopelessly smitten by these happy stories of adopted dogs. And did I mention those faces???
BUY THIS BOOK!
This book is super-duper cute! I know that when I first saw the title of this book I thought of the ASPCA commercials on television. Seriously, some of those are the most depressing commercials...the photos and the songs they pair them with...oh my!
Back to this book.
Have you ever tried to take a photo of your dogs? I feel like these are the types of photos I end up with myself. The dogs personalities really shine through the photos.
If you are a dog lover, or just want a little pick me up kind of picture book then this is for you. You will not be able to help but smile. You might even laugh at some of the cuties. I plan on getting this one for a few of my peeps for Christmas.
When you BUY THIS BOOK you not only get a great book that never gets old (you can read it over and over), but you also contribute to great organizations, Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society.
This book was so well put together. It combined many heartfelt emotions for the animals as well as humor. I would recommend this book in a heartbeat.
This book is impossible not to enjoy, even if you don't necessarily define yourself as a "dog lover". It would make a great gift for dog lovers, animal lovers, and just a general "swiss army pick" if you want to give the gift of a book to someone and have no idea what they may enjoy.
