Description
The shady Hotel of the Three Roses is home to an assortment of drunks and degenerates. Inspector De Vincenzi receives an anonymous letter, warning him of an imminent outrage at the guest house. Shortly after, a macabre discovery is made—a body is found hanging in the hotel's stairwell. As De Vincenzi investigates, more deaths follow, until he finally uncovers a gothic and grotesque story linking the Three Roses' unhappy residents to each other.
This intensely dramatic mystery from the father of the Italian crime novel, Augusto de Angelis, features his most famous creation—Inspector De Vincenzi.
A Note From the Publisher
'De Vicenzi, is an investigator who doesn't stop at the material evidence, but digs with uncommon passion in the psyche of his characters, and the atmosphere in which they live and operate... a rare delight' Corriere Della Sera
'Compared to the mediocre rubbish published during his time by way of detective stories, De Angelis is a notable exception: for his literary talent, for his innovation of the genre, for his narrative technique (the detective story is 'all action, tense, vibrant, frenetic, extremely calculated" he theorised, expertly putting his theory into practice) and for the modernity of the figure of Commissario De Vincenzi, rigorous reasoner, philosopher in his heart, a committed reader, and true master of his clients' psychology' Il Giornale

Thank you Net Galley. I enjoyed this book very much. A well written, locked room mystery that reminded me just a little of Agatha Christie in the staging of the crime. I would love to read other books by this author.
This was an intriguing story, took awhile to get into it but having done so, the twist and turns really keep you reading. At time the story went in all directions and I was a real feat of the writer to keep everything flowing smoothly. Once started very, very hard to put down. I recommend it to anyone that like old fashion mysteries.
The Hotel of the Three Roses, by Augusto de Angelis, was originally published in 1936, in Italian. However, you would never know this book was written 80 years ago. Also it is the seventh book in the series, but you don’t need to read the prior books in the series to enjoy this novel. The book takes a little bit to get into, but it is a great read and the characters are wonderful. There is some great black comedy to go along with all of the suspense and intrigue. Usually I grow to dislike the main detectives in these types of books, but I did not find myself disliking Commissario de Vincenzi, on the contrary I like his character a lot. He was very real, not hiding anything from the reader and grows frustrated when he can’t figure things out. He reminded me of the guy in the British television show “Midsomer Murders”. If you like mysteries with an interesting detective I highly recommend checking this book out.
