Enduring a lonely and unloved existence, it is no surprise that Lucy was infatuated with Richard. What started as a puppy love, turned into an obsession to the extent she got married to Mark because he sort of looked like Richard! Though she truly loved him, her original inclination was the similarity!
When Richard was able to resist Lucy up until her marriage, I did not understand his intensions when he suddenly got hot and heavy with Lucy. Richard's past wasn't good either, a reason he connected with Lucy and may be, she was one person who was there for him, just like how he was there for her.
So they confused their feelings and in a need to retain closeness when they couldn't they indulged in a forbidden affair and hurt their loved ones. I also did not understand why Richard had to jump to his death - may be being a public figure and all that.
I liked that Lucy did not try and find an escape route and instead accepted her mistakes and Mark - what can I say. He is such a sweetheart! Though he reacts when he hears about his wife's affair, he was a real good man out and out - forgave her and even decided to give their marriage a chance and get to know Lucy - understanding he rushed her knowing she wasn't ready initially.
There are triggers in this book that not everyone might be OK with - a rape scene, cheating by Richard (not only on his wife with Lucy, but he was a womanizer and carried on with many women), Lucy with Richard when she was married to Mark, mention of physical abuse or neglect by parents and suicide. Also, Richard continuing with his womanizing ways while being a priest is another uncomfortable fact that also happens in real world.
Fiona Cameron has written this heart-breaking and grippingly emotional read very well. It is a story of betrayal and redemption and is an intense read. It can leave you emotional and teary-eyed, but it is worth your time - the book will keep you hooked to the end! Though not my regular genre, I am very glad I picked this book & the cover looks great!
