Useful collection of Mary Shelley’s writings, including the full text of Frankenstein.
I really, really liked this! I learned so much about Shelley and it was wonderful to read some other works besides Frakenstein to get a better picture of what kind of author she was. I would recommend this book. Absolutely amazing. 5 out of 5 stars.
This is an excellent anthology which makes Shelley's writings beyond Frankenstein readily available in a single volume. Included is the latter and Mathilda in full, a hefty extract from The Last Man, and a selection of short stories with Shelley's Essay On Ghosts. A brief one-page biographical note precedes the texts.
This would be perfect for anyone wanting to teach a course on Mary Shelley even though it's unannotated, or for general readers. Frankenstein has become so adopted by popular culture that Shelley's status as a literary writer has become somewhat erased, so this is an affordable and varied antidote.
A good collection of Shelley's work. If you want to read Shelley, this is a good place to start!
A great body of work by a woman author. This is a good read. Given copy for honest review.
Mary Shelley The Dover Reader I was given this ARC by NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I am glad I had the opportunity to read this collection of Mary Shelley’s works. They are by far the best introduction to her works I have come across and provide a greater range and breadth of Shelley’s skill as a writer.
Obviously Frankenstein was the first work in this collection and simply a timeless classic.
I was surprised by her short novel Mathilda, the melodrama and emotional nature of the protagonist had me wondering how much fun Shelley had writing it.
I personally cannot appreciate the included excerpts of The Last Man simply because I like to read the entire story in order form a complete and accurate opinion of a story.
The essays where a very nice addition, since even during my undergraduate years I was never fortunate enough to read more than her most famous novel, Frankenstein.
Overall, a very good collection of Shelley’s works and an insightful introduction to one of the most influential writers.
(I received an ARC from the NETGALLEY in exchange for an honest review.)
This Dover Reader of Shelley's works is divided by her novels, short stories and an essay. She is a wonderful writer and brings out humankind.
k (My Novelesque Life)
As someone who had only heard of Mary Shelley in regards to Frankenstein it was interesting to read more of her work. The novels were mainly melancholic but the novellas were more light hearted and by including her essay on Ghosts you are sure to end with a laugh.
I highly recommend this book especially to students of the novel Frankenstein as it gives a lovely introduction to that work but also to those who are interested in Mary Shelley and want to investigate her other work.
Mary Shelley is one of my all-time favourite authors, a woman, a girl, who followed in her parents' footsteps and broke all the rules, married a Romantic poet and created one of the world's most famous monsters. It is easy to forget she wrote more than just Frankenstein
What this edition is great for is showing the variety of Shelley's writing, from novels such as Frankenstein, novellas like Mathilda and short stories like 'The Dream'. I was especially intrigued, however, by her essays because it gave me a completely new insight into this fascinating woman.
Dover Thrift is amazing at bringing together a good variety of texts in their range of "collected works" and I'm very glad to see someone like Mary Shelley join the series. I really like this edition and definitely recommend it to those who want to know more about Shelley both as an author and a human.
