I picked this book out to read to my boys because the cover was adorable and the comic book style story telling!

Once I started reading it to my two and six year old, we loved the playful interactions between Narwhal and Jelly! The story was enjoyable and engaging. The added narwhal and jellyfish facts were insightful. The language used by the characters was carefree, childlike, and innocent this makes it easy for young ears to understand the information being provided.

We learned that a narwhal’s horn-like tooth can be up to 10ft. long, they can hold their breath for 25 mins., and they have a record dive depth up to 5,905ft. We also learned that there are 4,000 different types of jellyfish in the world and that a group of them are called a smack. We enjoyed that there were three different stories of Narwhal & Jelly included in the book. The first gave us information about narwhals and jellyfish. The second was about what is a pod, how important communication is between friends, and that getting left out makes you angry. The third book was about using your imagination.

I would defiantly recommend this book to friends with children, media specialists, and to teachers in early childhood and early elementary that are doing units on narwhals.

As a fan of graphic novels and comics, my own children want to read them but often it's difficult to read aloud. This book is not only a great introduction into the format but it's easy to read and follow along for early readers. With Mo Willem's Elephant and Piggy series coming to an end, I could easily see this as a series those fans could come to! I hope there will be more!

Narwhal is the perfect introduction to the graphic novel genre for young people. My 4 year old daughter was enthralled by the adorable characters and the sweet sense of humor in the stories. Many graphic novels are difficult for pre-readers and beginning readers because they cannot understand the context of the story without the words, but Narwal manages to convey emotion and storytelling so even my 4 year old can enjoy the book on her own.

I greatly enjoyed the artistic style which is deceptively simple. Minor details in the background create a surprising amount of depth in each frame. The simplicity manages to emphasis the expressiveness of the characters.

I'm excited to see more in this series.

Thanks to Penguin Random House & Tundra Books for an ARC of this charming book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is adorable, from the cute drawings to the endearing relationship between Narwhal and Jelly. But beyond being super cute, the book offers real educational value for kids! Both children and adults will learn about narwhals and jellyfish, both fantasic creatures of the sea in this book. I also loved the animal puns (turtley!). The artwork is lovely, as well.

I would absolutely recommend this book to kids, and even to whimsical adults who happen to love marine life or strange creatures.

This little narwhal is an adorable character. He is upbeat, positive and the life of party... which he creates of course. While in uncharted underwater territory he comes across a jellyfish and they quickly make friends. Off they go to eat waffles together and hang out.

The energetic narwhal has great self-esteem and knows that he is the epitome of awesomeness! The jellyfish says:

"What is up with that horn?"
"It is actually more of a tusk-tooth."
"Then why is it coming out of your forehead?"
"Because I'm awesome like that!"
"It is pretty awesome."
"Thanks."

Narwhal has a gift of making diverse friendships and bringing creatures together to enjoy each other's company. He can't seem to find his pod so he decides to gather those around him and make his own! He is innovative, all inclusive and his happy, care-free spirit is contagious. He reads books (what a winner) and shares them which ignites other's imaginations and gives them a desire to read too. He accomplishes all this just by being himself. When his new friend the jellyfish asks him:

"What does a pod do exactly?"

Narwhal answers:

"I'm not really sure!"
"But I imagine a pod plays ultimate cannonball, eats waffle, fights crime and... has SUPER AWESOME PARTIES!! "PODASTIC!"

And party they do with music, dancing and pod-bonding...what celebrating takes place.

The formating of the text is very interesting with new playful words which include, tentacular from the octopus, gnarly from the shark and turtley from the turtle. Cleverly the author has included a page of really fun facts about the Narwhal and one for the jellyfish. This book has it all! The charisma of Narwhal is infectious. I love the funky pictures and the come-on-and-join-my pod-vibe. Everyone is welcome in Narwhal's world! Highly recommended. Delightful.
