Finley Montgomery is a 20 yr old young woman who has psychic powers inherited from her grandmother Eloise. Struggling with her parental relationships, she lives where Eloise does, in The Hollows, which is located in New York.
Finley and Eloise are given the task of helping out in an investigation of a girl called Abbey, who vanished from the Hollows months ago. Her family's desperate for answers, and Finley does her best to provide them.
This book, with it's paranormal storyline, isn't usually the type of book I go for, but I did really enjoy it. Finley is such an intelligent, likeable character, and the story is mysterious and interesting. . This is a book that you can just breeze through in a couple of sittings.
I hadn't read any books by Lisa Unger prior to Ink And Bone, but I have just picked up two of her other novels from the library after reading this!

Wow! Breathtakingly brilliant!

When eight year old Abbey joined her parents Merri and Wolf Gleason, and brother, Jackson for a few days break at The Hollows they were looking forward to a relaxing time together. Setting out for a hike in the woods with their father the day after they arrived, Abbey and Jackson skipped and ran ahead while their father was on the phone. So much so that before they knew it they were way ahead of him. With the suddenness of the unexpected, fun turned to fear – immediately lives changed and would never be the same again.

Ten months later and a still grieving but hopeful Merri called Jones Cooper, a private detective who lived and worked in The Hollows. Jones had worked with Eloise Montgomery before on cold cases – trying to help grieving families locate missing family members. Eloise had an unusual gift and her twenty year old granddaughter Finley had inherited the same gift. Finley had been eight years old when she started noticing things happening to her which were difficult to explain. Now it seemed she would be able to turn this gift to helping others. Having recently moved to The Hollows to live with her grandmother whom she had called Mimi since she was a child, she attended classes, and also had an on again/off again boyfriend called Rainer. He was a tattoo artist, and had followed Finley from Seattle where she’d lived with her mother Amanda and brother Alfie. Finley’s tattoos were a sight to see – she was working at becoming completely covered so that she felt “the same outside as she did inside”– "Finley’s body was a living canvas of ink and bone".

Not sure she was ready for what she needed to put herself through, Finley nevertheless felt the need to help Jones – but she was also aware that time was running out. Even though it had already been ten months, she felt an urgency she couldn’t explain. Would Finley be able to find the necessary answers? Or was it already too late?

Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger is an absolutely brilliant, mind-boggling psychological thriller (with paranormal elements) that I could not put down! Read in a matter of hours, it completely engrossed me. Though completely different, the protagonist was an exceptional character and one I really hope we see again. Intense, gripping and filled with fabulous twists and turns, it is one I highly recommend to all lovers of the thriller genre.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy to read in exchange for my honest review.

My thoughts…

"A book you cannot put down.” This is not a cliche when discussing Ink and Bone. Wow, I loved this story and every character in it, especially Finley and her Grandmother.

I read this story so fast and had no problem following the plot at all. In fact I was there each time Finley went into the forest to look for the lost child. I love a fiction story that puts me in the scenes and has me so enthralled that reality takes a holiday.

Ink and Bone made me shiver, cry and grieve. It was an mesmerising and memorable read - a must for your to be read pile.

Fabulous, if I could give the book more stars I would. Love all of Lisa Unger's books and this one continues the trend. Very well written, intriguing and I cannot wait for more from Lisa.
