Description
Earth went silent over a decade ago. No contact, no resupply. If something doesn't change, the colony will go extinct. The only way to restore communication with Earth is the ancient colony ship, Chimera. Two centuries of disrepair have taken their toll on her--the shipboard AI that allows travel between distant stars is lost in unending sleep. She must be woken and the ship rebuilt for a desperate return journey to Earth.
The mandate to repair and crew the Chimera seems like a game to Theo--one he isn't invited to play. Angry at having been overlooked, Theo hacks his name onto the list of those selected to crew the Chimera, a decision he soon regrets. A brutal murder changes everything: Theo must make it to the Chimera or his family will suffer terrible consequences.
Piloting an ore trawler is the only life Selena has ever known until an industrial accident strands her aboard the Hydra, the orbital station responsible for rebuilding the Chimera. A chance encounter with her AI suggests Selena might have a far larger role to play in saving the colony than she--or anyone else--ever imagined.
Theo and Selena's futures become intertwined as they carve out places for themselves in the crew that will navigate the Chimera back to Earth. However, behind the scenes, a brilliant sociopath has set events in motion that could not only destroy their lives, but doom their colony as well.
Advance Praise
"Reminiscent of Orson Scott Card's early work, especially Treason and Ender's Game, the storytelling has been well crafted, inviting the reader into a new world that is fresh and deep yet utterly recognizable."-- Red Eagle's Legacy Book Blog
"I loved the world, and thought the authors walked the line between great description and action perfectly ... a cracking start to what promises to be an amazing series."--Tash McAdam, International Bestselling Author of The Psionics Series
"N. J. Tanger has done what many are saying can't be done: put a fresh face on YA dystopian science fiction ... if you enjoyed Ender's Game, City of Ember, or The Hunger Games, you'll find a lot to like in the pages of Chimera."--Sarah Read, editor of Pantheon Magazine
"Inventive and imaginative story of a distant colony cut off from Earth, complete with engaging characters and plenty of action. CHIMERA provides an intriguing start to what is obviously a larger story." --John E. Stith, author of Manhattan Transfer
"...the writing is vibrant and direct with young characters who show the same bravery, impatience and enthusiasm as their real-world counterparts ... a trait shared with some of the best work of Asimov and Anne McCaffrey." --Brendan Foley, author of Under the Wire
"An epic tale of rebellion, prophecy, and perseverance. With touches of Ender's Game, and echoes of Asimov and Heinlein, this visionary story is a tense, exhilarating ride."--Richard Thomas, author of Disintegration

Read this through without stopping. I rate 5 stars on books I hate to put down and begrudge the time away from. Outstanding beginning of a series and yea! the whole thing is written and available now. Got so involved with the story I hated it to end. Sometimes I don't check the publish date so it's a happy surprise to find the next book is available and I can jump back in right away.
The two main characters are from very different backgrounds and done actually meet until the end of book 1.. Many of the secondary characters are just as interesting. The background of everyone is thoroughly covered by actions as much as words and the world they live on is created. It is an inhospitable place, a punishment setting for a group in trouble with the Federation. Seven generations have worked the moon they inhabit, mining ore to repay the debt their ancestors owed. It should be over, they should be able to return to Earth or make profit from the ore they can now sell. But Earth no longer sends supplies and the people are close to starving.
A crew is chosen from the younger colonists. Work begins to reassemble the ship that brought them there. Things are urgent now. Everything depends on the crew as we watch them grow and mature under pressure. Future book (s) must answer the questions- Can they awaken the ship's brain to begin the journey back? And Is there any help for them on Earth?
This book was a gift from the author, JNR Media and Netgalley. Thank you.
Thanks to netgalley for the arc. Chimera was a great book. Very interesting with a little something for everyone. it had adventure, romance, friendship, action, mystery, and spaceships. I liked the book, until 85%, then I loved it. I gave it four stars because the beginning was a little slow, but overall it was great.
There were only 2 words in this entire book that left me wanting: The End. Seriously, I loved this book from beginning to end and am eager to read the rest of the series! I will definitely be recommending its addition to our YA library collection, especially since it's one that I think would appeal equally to male and female readers. So many of the current YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre are a bit too "girl-power" for many males, but this one is a well-balanced, all around solid story.
