Description
Since the age of eleven, when her mother was murdered, the life of the theater is all Lilly Long has known. Now twenty-two, she has blossomed into an accomplished Shakespearean actress. But after her innocence--and her savings--are taken from her by a seductive scoundrel, Lilly vows to leave the stage, enter the real world, and save others from a similar fate. Following in the footsteps of the country's first female detective, Lilly persuades Allan Pinkerton to take her on.
Lilly's acting skills are a perfect fit for her real-life role as a Pinkerton operative. But her first case is a baptism by fire as she is sent to the small town of Vandalia to solve the mystery of a pastor who disappeared with his family--and the church's funds. When Lilly arrives, she finds the mere mention of the reverend's name provokes enmity or suspicious silence. Shadowed by a second Pinkerton agent with an agenda of his own, Lilly begins to uncover Vandalia's sordid secrets. But she'll have to deliver the performance of a lifetime to survive the final act of this drama.
Advance Praise
“A strong heroine and the intriguing Pinkertons make this historical mystery a cozy way to spend a weekend. Lilly Long’s independence and stubborn spirit will immediately endear her to many readers. The case is well constructed, and the tone of the prose casts an almost gothic mood over the story. This is a solid start to a new series, and the introduction of a potential work and romantic partner for Lilly adds an extra element of appeal for a variety of readers.”– RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars
“[A] riveting series launch…Strange undercurrents of sorrow and menace swirl around our intrepid heroine, drawing her into a vortex of cruelty and long-buried evil. Richards provides just the right amount of melodrama in this lively tale.”– Publishers Weekly

Feisty, level-headed, and fast-paced heroine and teasing snippet of next book
Excellent read, the author has done a wonderful job. If your looking for a good story that will draw you in, keep you interested and a character your going to enjoy and root for, this is the book for you. I was so impressed and enjoyed the book, I highly recommend.
This mystery had a lot of twists. Most of the time I did not see them coming as I tried to puzzle out the situation along with Lilly. She began with something simple which turned into something very complex. I enjoyed her self-learning and growing along the way. Lilly was not afraid to face her fears. I did not want to put this book down and highly recommend it.
I received a copy of this story through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book just got better and better! Lilly Long is such a feisty, enduring character! Even though she has a troubled past, she moves forward and comes out strong. She is one of the first female detectives for the Pinkerton Detective Agency in 1881 Chicago. This historical mystery is very intriguing and just draws the reader in. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
I received an advanced copy of this e-b0ok in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This is a historical mystery, book one in what I assume will be a series of books. The star of this series is Miss Lilly Long. After a rough start at the beginning of the book, she applies for a job with a detective agency.
Not going into a lot of detail because I don't want to ruin it, but I thought this was a great book. Lilly is a strong willed woman and interesting character. She doesn't fit into the mold of an 18th century woman and I think that is what makes her so fun to follow. This book had an amazing ending. A twist that wasn't so far out of reach that it seems impossible, but just different enough for me not to have guessed it. I give this book four stars. Totally would read the next in the series to see what happens to Lilly Long on her next detecting adventure.
Will publish to amazon after the book's release.
An engaging story with a strong main character (who happens to be a woman);
The author captures the feel of the era well, especially the societal expectations of male and female roles.
Few are who they might first appear and danger abounds.
A good read.
Great read…..Lilly Long is an actress. He husband Robbed her of all her money then disappeared. Lilly decided she needed a change of occupation. Seeing an advertisement in the Newspaper for a woman to be Pinkerton Agency agent, Lilly decided to apply. With a little trickery, she lands the job.
In 1880’s, a woman detective was a real rarity. But Lilly is a feisty, vivid, well defined character with a bold determination to succeed in a man world. Things are not always as they seem but Lilly manages to adapt to solve the puzzle.
An intriguing mystery with suspense, twists and turns plus some historical fiction all wrapped into this book.

In the 1880, a Talented Actress Turns Detective
Lily Long is an actress like her mother, and like her mother, who was killed by a lover, she has a problem with men. One night after a performance, she arrives back at the hotel where the troop is staying and finds her husband beating up her surrogate mother after stealing Lily's savings.
Furious that she's been treated this way, Lily wants to do something to help other women. When she sees an ad from the Pinkerton Agency looking for female detectives, she's determined to try to for the position. Unfortunately, the Pinkertons think she's too young. Undeterred, Lily comes up with a scheme to showcase her talents and prove to the agency that she would be a good operative.
Lily is a spirited lady who doesn't give up easily. The historical setting is accurate and the plot has several twists. The ending is difficult to guess. I enjoyed the novel. If you like a historical mystery novel that is more mystery than romance, this is a good choice. Although there is a romantic interest, there are no sex scenes. It's just a good read with the emphasis on plot.
I received this book from Net Galley for this review.
