A Note From the Publisher

The Matters of Opinion series takes a look into important issues that young adults face. Each book features thought-provoking questions surrounding the issue and provides essays on both the pro and con point of view. As students learn more about the different sides of each issue, they can then start to formulate their own opinions on the topic. After each discussion, the reader is introduced to argumentative techniques that the authors used to present their viewpoints. These include using techniques such as the "Emotional Appeal", "Bias", "Testimonials" and more. These techniques are valuable both for essay writing and understanding how to differentiate opinions from fact. The last chapter encourages the reader to write their own opinion piece and provides guidance for working through the steps of essay writing. This book accomplishes two things. It gives the reader lots of information on the issue of obesity and it presents this information from opposing viewpoints. For example, one chapter questions whether the government should be involved in trying to reduce obesity. Facts to support both why or why not are presented in separate sections. So the book has information for those interested in the topic of obesity and help for students who are preparing for debate.
