This was a well-written suspense/romance novel that starts out quickly as the heroine Kate recovers from a nasty break-in at her women's boutique. Clues start from the beginning about who might be out to get Kate, and there are several suspects with the prime ones coming for a cult-like group condemning Kate and her volunteer work with an upcoming town festival. The suspense keeps the story moving, and there are multiple twists along the way.
Seth is the new in town carpenter with baggage that comes to Kate's aid to repair the doors and damage to her boutique, and sparks immediately fly with the romance coming together quickly. He proves to be a great hero to Kate, while simultaneously bringing her to life and helping her recover from the threats and her past.
The characters are well-developed with backstories. For me, this is a bit where the story lacks some depth. Seth seems far too mature for 22, which gave me pause with regards to his relationship with Kate (a worldly 29 year old). Additionally, we are given details about Seth's baggage that does not really contribute in any way to the story and does not completely make sense.
Finally, the story covers in great detail the weeks/month or two leading from the break-in to the festival, yet the end of the story is extremely rushed with a short, happy epilogue that answers the main detail of the romance but leaves everything else in the air. I would like to have read more of what happens after the mystery is revealed and believe that this could have really clarified the romance between Seth and Kate and better defined both of their characters.
