I loved the plot of this story and the little dramas that occurred within. Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Kai is a powerful telepath living in Manhattan with her husband Oliver. Kai loves New York and she loves her job working with children in need but dealing with all those emotions regularly brings her to the verge of being suicidal. In order to save her from herself Oliver takes her to his hometown of Butternut, Wisconsin but will his past and her ability allow their marriage to survive?
I was first attracted to this book by the picture on the cover; I thought it looked eerie and isolated. The blurb didn’t give me any clues either way whether this book was worth a read or not but having read it I can say it was worth a read. The book begins with a chapter from Oliver’s point of view and from the opening lines it is clear how much his wife means to him. “Like any man, I loved my wife; but these 3A.M suicidal thoughts were killing me.” The author provides the reader with vivid images from the outset, “Images flooded my mind. Our lifeless Shih-tzu puppy limp in the street, her grandmother’s eyes dimmed with death, a six-year old bruised and beaten into silence.”
Kai inadvertently projects her moods onto the people around her, in particularly Oliver, meaning that he is quite often awoken to images and feelings of a negative nature. When something occurs with one of Kai’s cases and drags her down into the depths of despair yet again Oliver knows it is time to act. “They saw people are only given what they can handle. That pain is a personal and private experience. They’ve never met my wife.”
Kai loves living in New York because she gets to use her gift to help people like she believes her grandmother would have wanted. Each day is a struggle to cope with a barrage of emotions, “like a tidal wave breaking on land, thousands of thoughts broke against me. Ten thousand emotions assaulted me.”
Part of me was routing for Kai and Oliver’s relationship throughout but part of me thought that his actions were controlling and selfish and that for someone who could read people’s thoughts she was constantly unaware of his. Oliver’s aunt, though fairly minor, was a character I was drawn to for her warmth, insight and a voice of reason. I was also drawn to Jenny even though she appears only briefly. This book was tense, suspenseful and thrilling and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I can be short here: ‘The Six Train to Wisconsin’ is a good sci-fi thriller, well written and a good developed story. The delving into relationships is not my thing; it is partly also a love story.

I really enjoyed this novel. Complex characters, telepathy, dreamwalker and a host of anything but normal people. A cover up involving a police chief and detective, and realistic everyday life living.

This book is about a man, Oliver, who is devoted to his wife, Kai, who happens to be a telepath. Because she is so receptive to the pain and ugliness all around her, her mind has become fragile and she is at almost constant risk of suicide, especially living in a place like Manhattan. To save her, Oliver gives up everything, “kidnaps” her, and takes her to an old house he inherited in out-of-the-way Butternut, Wisconsin.

But of course, evil isn’t restricted to New York, and soon Kai is in trouble again, both mentally and physically.

Most of the story, told in alternate chapters by Kai and Oliver, has two main focuses: Kai’s telepathy and the problems it causes, and the strain in their marriage produced by returning to the place where Oliver grew up, and where his ex-girlfriend Mickey is still in love with him.

Although the book was compulsively readable, at the same time I found Kai’s continued histrionics and immaturity very annoying. These aspects to Kai also marred the ending, which once again showed, in my opinion, how Kai could not overcome these weaknesses. Realistic? Not really, I didn’t think, in light of Oliver’s devotion to her. And the fact that nobody could figure out who the bad guy was? Also seemed improbable.

After reading this book I can honestly say that having telepathy would be the worst super power in the world. Knowing everyone's thoughts, would be torturous. How Kai thought she could live in Manhattan and not go insane is beyond me. I don't even have telepathy and the emotional noise from NYC can be overwhelming.

Heintz has created a great story, mixing the supernatural with a modern day mystery romance. To help save Kai, Oliver kidnaps her and brings her to his home town. But his home town holds a lot of secrets. Olivers first love, and a dark secret that kept him away for over 10 years, and estranged from his father. Now in this small town where everyone knows everyone Oliver and Kai find themselves fighting for their lives and their relationship.

Great writing, great mystery. The ending is left on a bit of a cliff hanger but that was okay. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in this series.

The Six Train to Wisconsin is a book that captures what it truly means to love someone and do just about anything for them. Readers are introduced to Kai and Oliver living their lives as a married couple in Manhattan, going about their day to day business and jobs. However, their situation is incredibly unique in that Kai is a telepath. Imagine not only being married to someone who can read your thoughts, but witnessing what that person goes through because they can hear the thoughts and experience the emotions of everyone else. It takes a really strong level of commitment to hold that kind of relationship together. The author did an amazing job of capturing the complications and extra work that go into this paradigm of love stories. I loved how the author told the story from alternating points of view with Kai and Oliver to really illustrate this.

Things start to get really bad in Manhattan and Oliver essentially kidnaps Kai and takes her to the quieter environment of small town Butternut, Wisconsin, his old stomping grounds. Kai finds out Oliver's dark secrets and their relationship is tested. I was somewhat disappointed at the pace of the story. It started out strong and I had expected the story to really pick up once the dark secrets were unraveled, but found that it took some time for the action to kick itself into gear. I also had a hard time understanding choices made in view of the relationship during this part of the story. The author painted this beautiful picture of how full of love and commitment that this relationship was and it just started falling apart and neither side cared enough to really try but just threw harsh words and thoughts at each other.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the premise behind the story with all the characters with their special mental capabilities. I'd definitely be interested in reading other installments in the series.

Oliver would do anything for Kia, including re-entering the place he ran from when it became his personal Hell. She is his world, his heart and soul and she is in danger of losing her mind or worse. Kia is a telepath and the weight of the crush of thoughts from thousands of minds in Manhattan are driving her mad, drowning her in depression and suicide is becoming the only way she can see to escape the mental onslaught. Devoted to her job and life, Oliver knows the only way to save her is to trick her into moving to his quiet hometown in Wisconsin. His only thought and only goal is to let Kia revive her inner strength to hold out others thoughts, little did he know, his past would come back to haunt him an threaten all that he holds dear. Secrets have a way of growing ugly the longer they are kept, high school sweethearts can become excessive stalkers and Oliver will learn how human both he and Kia really are.

Kourtney Heintz’s The Six Train to Wisconsin is a tale of desperate love, lies of omission, infidelity and the lengths people will go to seek revenge all woven together with a paranormal thread. Brilliant characters come together in a small town where everyone knows everyone elses business and if they don’t, they make something up. Imagine being taken from the lights and frenzied pace of the big city and being plopped down in a smallminded town whose open arms of welcome are non-existent. How would you handle and old flame coming on to your spouse? Could you live with hearing everyone’s thoughts? Oliver has gone above and beyond to save the woman he loves, but his methods leave something to be desired. Kia is not only a wreck, but an outsider to the dark secrets buried in Butternut. Her reactions to events were like playing with fire in the most vicious way. Still, one must ask, what would I do? What am I willing to forgive?

Flawed characters in a town crippled by isolation and insecurity, liars, cheaters and players, everyone has an agenda and Kourtney Heintz has rolled the dice and come up with a suspense filled winner that guards the end like Cerberus!

This is a difficult story to read because of the intensity of the material and some of the actions described. However, once you get past learning the contents of someone's mind during periods of stress, it becomes an interesting mystery as a young boy is kidnapped and cannot be found. The story has many twists and turns, romantically as well as physically. Hard to read, but impossible to put done.

This is a hard book to review. There were parts of if I really loved and parts I really did not. The telepath and dreamwalking parts of the story were amazing, as was the plot itself. This is a book about how we let the past haunt us long past the point we should. The main characters Kia and Oliver are messy, complicated and hard to like it really worked. That being said I found Kia to be the most annoying chartacter. I felt the book was a little to long with certain elements drawn out to far. I also felt the relationship between Kia and Oliver was more like a teenage relationship then a married 30 something couple. I will be reading the next book.

The Six Train to Wisconsin
Kourtney Heintz

Kai and Oliver have a unique marriage. Kia is a telepathic but she can't control the mass of thoughts in New York. Oliver is afraid she is going to have another breakdown. He takes her to his hometown Butternut, Wisconsin. Kai is not pleased but she finally calms down when she meets four year old Lucas. Lucas is special he also has a special talent.
I am not sure who I liked best Kai or Oliver. They both have secrets and faults. Their characters are very well developed and it is easy to love/hate them. The history with both their familes is complicated. The friction between both of their familes was perfectly written. This book was a non-stop read. Slow to get going but picks up and thrilling till the end
Heintz has written a great first novel.

It is very rare that I run across a book that is just perfect. Usually it is in the back of my mind that if such and such is changed, it would be a tighter story. Not so with THE SIX TRAIN TO WISCONSIN.

Oliver has a way of digging in his heels and overcoming the impossible. That is what he did when he kidnapped Kai and brought her to his family home in Wisconsin. The hope is that Kai would be able to heal with fewer minds around.

When Kai was first brought to Butternut, she was pissed. She didn't care that all the minds in Manhattan were killing her. All she thought about was the kids that she wasn't there to help. Now she is starting to discover some secrets that her husband has kept from her and she wants to help him and their marriage with her telepathy.

This book will run the readers through the range of emotions from love to hatred to fear to happiness. Incredible writing and characters will keep you glued to the page. I highly recommend THE SIX TRAIN TO WISCONSIN to any of my readers who enjoy contemporary fiction. This book really is a must read.

Oliver and Kai are a young couple living in New York. They both brought past demons into their marriage with the hopes that their love for each other would bring them peace and happiness. Their goal was to put the past behind them and to begin a new life together. One obstacle was Kai's psychic ability to read minds. Her work in helping children in crisis, along with her own fragile mind, caused her to slip back into a deep depression. Oliver decides to "kidnap" his wife and bring her back to his remote home town to rest and recover. This move triggered a great deal of fighting and then making up again. More drama comes into play when Oliver's old girlfriend makes a move on him. This sets off yet another big fight between Oliver and Kai. During all this chaos the old girlfriend's young son is kidnapped and an intense search and rescue begins.
I did enjoy the paranormal aspects of the story and the search for the missing child, along with Kai going missing shortly after the boy, was an exciting part of the story. There was a point where I was getting frustrated with the immature arguing between Oliver and Kai but I guess the kiss and make up parts added a bit of spice to the story.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I get emails from NetGalley on a semi-regular basis, and often the books don't strike me. (I think I need to stop telling people I like thrillers, because 90% of all the ones I ever see promoted don't sound like anything I'd read.) But when an email came out talking about a book called HIGHWAY THIRTEEN TO MANHATTAN, the description sounded interesting. The trouble was that it was a second book, and just from the brief description, this wasn't something I could just jump into. However, in a lovely and reasonable move, NG was offering galley copies of the first book as well.

Now that I'm at least somewhat caught up with the various books I'm supposed to be reading, I got to sit down with SIX TRAIN. ...Holy moses, I wasn't expecting this.

The books follows a married couple: Kai and Oliver. Kai is a telepath, and a particularly sensitive one. She works with (essentially) child social services, and as they struggle through cases, the emotion of it all eats away at Kai. She's suicidal, and she's dragging Oliver down with her. She's taught him how to block out his mind from the world, how to create walls in his mind to shield both him from her and vice versa...but sometimes it's only him and his mind that can keep her solid, grounded. But as Kai gets worse, Oliver becomes desperate--and hatches a plan to take Kai somewhere away from the city, somewhere he never expected to go again.

The town where he grew up. And as so many small towns do, this one hides its share of secrets...and these aren't ones that play nicely with newcomers. Now Oliver isn't sure coming back was his best decision...but is it already too late?

I'm not sure what I was expecting in this book, but I wasn't expecting what I got. I wasn't expecting a book that kept me up at night to read. A book that made me pause car trips home to read. A book I could not stop thinking about...and wasn't sure about the details until the moment they were revealed. It's incredibly difficult to surprise me in a book, and while this one didn't quite surprise me, it kept me second-guessing my decisions. I love it when a book can do that.

Also, I loved the way Kai's telepathy was portrayed. I could imagine the mental walls, the tiny windows and doors, the crystal egg. I loved the realism in that if she gets smacked in the head, it doesn't work properly. And I love the level of problems it causes in her marriage. I don't love Kai and Oliver fighting obviously (because Kai/Oliver forever) but I like that it seems real. These are two people with a lot of baggage and a lot of secrets, and they don't deal well when it all comes tumbling out. And I like, in that vein, how this book ended. It was realistic and left me clawing at my Kindle for more, in that "how dare you leave me like that; what do you mean the book is over" kind of way.

Caleb (Kai's brother, and a dreamwalker) annoys the hell out of me. BUT, only when we're seeing him in Oliver's eyes. THIS IS GOOD WRITING. Kai loves her brother, and he her. There is a strong bond there and he wants to do what is right by her. Oliver? There is a lot more tension there, and Caleb isn't always entirely fair to him. (Oliver's not entirely fair to Caleb, either, so it's even.) I love Heintz's ability to do that. Same goes for Oliver's ex, Mickey. I see her connection to Oliver when he's telling the story, and I love it. And as soon as I see it in Kai's eyes, I want to throw her off a cliff. Good, good, good.

I'm happy that I have HIGHWAY THIRTEEN on my Kindle next, because I don't think I'd do well if it wasn't already here. (I'm nervous there's a third book. Is there a third? MORE than three? Oh god my heart.)

When determining whether or not to give a book a 4 or a 5 star rating, if I have a feeling of holding back from the 5 star, but can't put my finger on it, I'll bump it up. So while I'd give SIX TRAIN a solid 4.5, since I can't tell you the exact thing holding it from that elusive 5, it gets rounded up for Goodreads and the like. And I don't mind doing that at all.

Rating: ****1/2 - Strongly Recommended

3.5 out of 5 stars

So I was actually contacted by the author and asked to request this off NetGalley in anticipation for the sequels release. This is a love story at its core. I found this to be a little slow in the beginning but once the pace picked up and there was an air of mystery surrounding the main characters, I was hooked. The characters are flawed and I thought the author did a great job of giving both Oliver and Kai some much needed depth. I will be picking up the second book set to be released in November later this month.

One of the best mystery thriller novels I have ever read.
The book contains everything to make it delicious ranging from super-powered yet mentally tortured wife, her loving husband with a shameful secret, flirtatious ex-girlfriend, dead best friend, vindictive ex-husband of the ex-girlfriend, dream-walker brother-in-law detested by the husband. And one super awesome plot.

In the life of Oliver Richter there is only one important person. His wife Kai. She is a telepath. She picks up every devastating mood around herself and depression hits. She tries to commit suicide quite a few times. And to save his wife's life Oliver secretly takes her and brings her to Butternut, Wisconsin. But here Kai finds out the horrible truth her husband had buried deep inside intending to be forgotten and she gets angry. Their marriage is at stake. A ghost of Oliver's past emerges and kidnaps Kai to avenge his brother's death and to punish Oliver. What will Oliver do? You should read that part for yourself.

My Thoughts"- An amazing work of art. Full of suspense. The secret of Oliver has presented the way that will keep you to turn the pages. automatically.
Told from Oliver and Kai's point of view alternatively and I like the style.
Little bit coarse language is presented but that is okay.
Ratings"- 5 out of 5. Recommended to all.

A mystery, a psychic, and a romance, all rolled into one really good story! Kai and Oliver are devoted to each other, but Kai is also a telepath and the voices in her head are making her suicidal. In a desperate attempt to save his wife from herself, Oliver kidnaps her and takes her to his family home in Wisconsin. But this won’t be a simple vacation for either of them. When Oliver’s past starts to catch up with him and a 4-year old boy goes missing, complicated secrets will be revealed and lives will be changed forever.

This book is the first in a series and that’s a good thing because I really enjoyed the story and the characters of Kai and Oliver. Their devotion to each other is inspiring and the romance comes off as an integral part of the story. Of course, the mystery was my favorite part and I just had to keep reading until I knew the whole story. The paranormal aspect added a nice twist and was seamlessly incorporated into the overall plot. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read and mystery, paranormal and romance lovers can all find something they like with this one.

"Six Train" is a very intense, psychological novel exploring paranormal abilities such as kinesis, telepathy and dreamwalking. As Hamlet said, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." This novel takes a very practical approach to the concept of a "differently abled" person in our modern world, looking at how someone can cope with his talent on top of the normal pressures of life. The plot is compelling and the characters are worth getting to know.

Disclaimer: "I was given a review copy. All opinions expressed at my own." Please note, however, that I SELECT the books I want to read, much as you do, with an expectation of enjoyment. Should the book fail to live up to my expectations I'll so warn you! This one did not fail.

This book kept me hooked until the end. I'm glad the next book is out so that I can continue following these characters and their roller-coaster of emotions. I loved them, I hated them, I felt for them, I was annoyed. Great writing and loved the real world aspect of the supernatural powers. Can't wait to read more!

While beautifully written and soul achingly emotional, I found this one extremely difficult to get through in one setting. Kourtney Heintz obviously has a talent for words, however, the despair and heartache flowing from the pages sucked me down so deeply, I had to walk away on more than one occasion in order to keep my sanity. Kai and Oliver obviously love each other deeply, but I found their dependency on one another to be a level of unhealthy that fires too close to a time I spent years getting away from. The lack of trust between them is disturbing, juvenile behavior for a married couple to exhibit and disappointing to me as a reader. Vivid and electrifying, but not for me.

Oliver and Kai have a marriage where they share everything, including their thoughts. Kai is a social worker in New York City and is getting so overwhelmed by others thoughts Oliver makes the decision to take them back to his hometown in Wisconsin. Since they have been back things grow more sinister and when a young boy disappears they need to fight back. A good start for a new series.

This is a great love story mostly about Oliver and Kai, a young married couple, with more than their share of struggles. Kai is a telepath, working in central Manhattan, with the thoughts of thousands of people in her head. Oliver adores her and tries to protect her. In desperation, to save her sanity, Oliver "kidnaps" her, and takes her to his hometown of Butternut Wisconsin. He inherited a property from his grandfather, which is badly in need of some work. Kai's brother is a dreamwalker and he too is protective of Kai. This is a story of love and healing, healing Kai's mind and soul and healing the past trauma in Oliver's life. I so look forward reading the sequel next, which I have already started.

When Lucas disappears, a search starts with no luck in finding him. Kai is kidnapped and with Lucas four days later. Why? Oliver has secrets that come back to hurt him -- the ones he had left behind. Will Lucas and Kai be found? Who kidnapped them?

A novel full of suspense and mystery that includes romance and the paranormal. It is also about devotion to your partner and forgiveness. It gives you a chance to see the one of many consequences one might have if they had telepathy. I enjoyed the story immensely. I never wanted to stop reading it as I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
