Description
In this fourth volume of the series, join in the adventure as Phoebe and Marigold confront messy rooms, trouble at school, and a nasty case of “Sparkle Fever.” Follow the pair back to Camp Wolfgang, where their old pals Sue (a.k.a. “Monster Girl”) and Ringo, the lake creature, remind them that being weird is WAY more fun than being normal.

I love everything about this series! This volume is another treat. I love the humor - it's a little snarky, but never gets negative - and I love Marigold's vanity. I so wish this had been around when I was a kid! This volume has some particularly funny sequences involving Marigold's jealousy of the Christmas tree, and one involving a lake monster. I can't recommend this enough!
This series is just adorable, funny, and amazing. I love everything about it. Awesome graphics! Awesome MC! Awesome unicorn best friend! Awesome dialogue! Overall, just awesome.
Funny short histories about a girl and her unicorn. Tehre is some irony, some laughs, some pensive stories in this book. The art is very good and it is an original comic book to readif you like unicorns ^.^
Ages 8-12. A sweet and funny comic strip about a girl whose best friend is a unicorn.
Phoebe is an easy-going kid with a great sense of humor. One of her favorite activities is playing role-playing games with friends. She encounters average childhood issues: riding the school bus, chores, school assignments, attending summer camp, and frenemies. Her childhood is typical, except that she frequently encounters magical creatures! Marigold Heavenly Nostrils is always by Phoebe's side, ready to listen and offer advice. Phoebe and Marigold have an easy rapport with gentle teasing. It's especially amusing when Marigold tries to relate her experiences in the unicorn world to the human world. Marigold's narcissism also sparks lots of laughs!
At the end, the author shares some details about her creative process. That's such a great addition because it encourages kids to try making their own comic strips. There is also a 15-word glossary for new terms, such as "schism" and "whippersnapper."
Razzle Dazzle Unicorn encourages kids to embrace their individuality and use their imagination. Phoebe is a great character who I think many children--and even adults--will be able to relate to. Razzle Dazzle Unicorn is the fourth volume in the Heavenly Nostrils series. You can see more of Dana Simpson's work at her website.
A delightfully charming and funny look at a girl and her sassy unicorn friend. I love the banter between Phoebe and Marigold and I would definitely give this to some of my reluctant readers. I want to say Phoebe and Marigold remind me of Calvin and Hobbes. Definitely enjoyed this one and will read the others three books soon! These lighthearted and hilarious editions will be making their way into my classroom library in the very near future!
Phoebe and her Unicorn are different than others in more ways than one. But the book basically lets you know that being different is is just fine. A good overall read for the young . Lots of lessons to be learned.
Now that so few people get paper newspapers, where are we going to find new comics to enjoy? This is a compilation of comic strips about a tween girl and her unicorn. It is sweet and funny without sarcasm or bite. However, it is modern with lots of phones and tablets.
Artwork: 5/5
About the stories: 3/5
All the stories are cute and light: no tragedies, no violence; just light humour and light wit. So it's completely feel-good... but a tiny bit lacking in interest; the things that happen are all quite mild. And the jokes are all quite mild too. No laughing out loud moments for me, but the cuteness of the art and occasional clever punchline is uplifting. I missed "Lord Splendid Humility" who was my favourite character in the second book, "Unicorn on a Roll"!
Overall:
Cute and fun but could do with stronger stories, stronger jokes, more zing and more razzle dazzle.
First, the cover art is awesome! My six year old self would be giddy as a ballerina, eating fluffy pink cotton candy and squealing with delight from Phoebe and her wonderful unicorn! A sweet, whimsical ,charming graphic read. Suitable for ages 6 - 10. As an adult, I found some of the strips lacking depth but for young girls, the messages are appropriate and fitting.
I admit that I was sold as soon as I saw the cover. It's just so colorful, fun and I simple love the artwork! This graphic novel is perfect for young girls from the age of 8 to 12 years, both because of the graphics and the simple, but funny and relatable stories. Dana Simpson has found the perfect formula in the friendship between little Phoebe and her best friend Marigold the unicorn. The interaction between both characters is great even at those pages where there isn't happening much plotwise, and I love that it shows young readers that it isn't necessarily bad to be different. Razzle Dazzle Unicorn shows a range of typical childhood events like the holidays, school assignments, summer camp, frenemies and chores. Phoebe's childhood is quite typical except for the fact that her best friend happens to be an extravagant unicorn and she frequently runs into other magical creatures. Contemporary with a dash of fantasy, and so much fun to read! I can definitely recommend this graphic novel for younger (female) readers.
I read another book in this series and very much enjoyed it so when I saw this one I was excited to give it a read. Razzle Dazzle Unicorn is another volume of short comics about Phoebe and her Unicorn, Marigold and the day to day things they do. The volume collects just about all the seasons touching on autumn and winter with Thanksgiving and Christmas then school and some summer camp too. I think that Marigold is a hilarious companion for Phoebe, what kid wouldn't love a magic friend?
While this graphic novel is probably geared toward a young reader, I found it very funny and flew through it. Marigold and Phoebe are entertaining and sarcastic and there is a lot of comedy in a vain unicorn befriending a child. It is a very fun read.
Great graphic novel for young and old alike. I enjoy hearing my daughter laughing out loud as she is reading it. I will definitely consider buying this for my classroom .
A cute read for young girls. My daughter enjoyed reading about Phoebe and her unicorn. She said it was fun to read and made her giggle. With her being in 4th Grade, I'm not sure how much longer she will be reading these kind of books before venturing to the classics and ones with a bit more depth, but for a 9 year-old, it was a hit and she wants to read more!
*Thank you to Net Galley for supplying this book in exchange for a review!
What a cute, funny read! The artwork is whimsical and the story is fun. I've read other books in this series and felt that it was in keeping with the general tone.
A fun, delightful, and sparkly middle-grade graphic novel about Phoebe and her unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. Recommended!
I have never read this comic strip but I think I am a convert. This is apparently the 4th book, so the rest will be going on hold at the library. The illustrations are fun, the unicorn adorably self involved. Some crazy adventures ensue. A fun time for the whole family. Plus, I really like the making of a strip at the end. There is even a glossary.
There’s not much I can say here. As stated in my review of the last book, this isn’t just my favorite strip, it’s the only strip I read. What is new here is you get big colorful panels, at least I don’t remember the last book being like that, though I might be wrong.
This volume starts at Christmas—always welcome, because it means the appearance of Todd the Candy Dragon—through summer camp, which of course features Ringo and Sue. There are goblin sightings as well, meaning Dakota has to show up too.
There’s a few pages at the end about how to make a comic strip, and a glossary of big words.
The only thing you really need to know is that this stuff is hilarious.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley/the publishers in exchange for an honest review.
My oldest daughter is nine years old, and she loves comics and graphic novels. One day, she was very excited about telling me that there was going to be a new Phoebe and her Unicorn Adventure. When I told her that she would be able to read an advance reading copy, she was the happiest girl in the world.
Razzle Dazzle Unicorn is Dana Simpson’s fourth entry in the Phoebe and her Unicorn series. Phoebe is an elementary school aged girl who happens to have her very own unicorn. No one else can see Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, but she is Phoebe’s best friend.
The book covers about eight months of Phoebe’s life, beginning with Thanksgiving and ending with a return trip to summer camp. Phoebe and Marigold celebrate holidays, play Dungeons and Dragons, and interact with friends. Each page has a clever punchline in the last panel. Fans of the series will appreciate the reappearance of characters who appeared in the other books.
My daughter loved this book, and read it in one sitting. I also enjoyed experience with this book, and found myself reading strips out loud to my husband. I love the wry humor, and the friendship between Phoebe and Marigold.
I would absolutely recommend Razzle Dazzle Unicorn. You don’t have to read the previous Phoebe books to appreciate this one. Razzle Dazzle Unicorn is a quirky look at childhood, and will appeal to fans of comics like Calvin & Hobbes and Foxtrot. Phoebe and her Unicorn is a highly original comic, and I know my daughter and I are both looking forward to more Phoebe books in the future.
This fourth installment of the adventures of Phoebe and fabulous best friend --and amazing unicorn-- Marigold Heavenly Nostrils is pretty fabulous too! Fun, witty, and rocking a Calvin-and-Hobbes vibe, but with SPARKLES! The vocab use is great (as is the glossary at the back of the volume). Also interesting is the look at Simpson's creative process. Recommended!
Finally read an entry in this series after seeing it around for a while. Great humor for a pretty wide age range, cute characters, and appealing images.
Loved it. Hadn't heard of this series before reading the book, but thoroughly enjoyed the kind of humour. Also really liked the clear artistic style, definitely hooked now and will be looking to read more. Thanks to Netgalley for making me aware that this exists. :)
Pheobe and her best friend Marigold, who happens to be a unicorn, experience growing up together. They have to deal with bullies at school, growing up, summer camp, holidays and all sorts of other issues. Sometimes life is easier with sparkles and unicorn magic.
I think this is such a cute story. I had never heard of this series and this is book four. It can be read as a stand alone book though. I love Pheobe's character -- she is completely quirky and an average girl going through average life experiences, but so much more exciting with a unicorn as a best friend.
There are some super cute jokes in this book, too, that had me laughing out loud. I think I have a new series my 3rd grade daughter will LOVE! Christmas, here we come! :D
"Razzle Dazzle Unicorn" is cute and fun. I think it will appeal greatly to the unicorn-loving kids who visit my library, and who can never find enough books about unicorns to satisfy them. The comic-book style is appealing, and makes it easy to read. Phoebe is quirky, funny, and relatable. Marigold is completely self-absorbed, but she's a unicorn, and she is loyal to Phoebe, so she can be forgiven.
All in all a fun read that is sure to be a hit with kids. I will be purchasing this for my school's library.
Even though I've now started reading the daily strips, it is still a delight to read the collections to rehash all my favorite plotlines - and of course to see all of Pheobe & Marigold's adventures in full color!
This series is amazing! Phoebe and Marigold are a real hoot!
Another great entry in the Phoebe and her Unicorn series. This comic really reminds me of Judd Winnick's early books, it has a combination of cleverness and heart. There's also the obvious parallel to a female Calvin and Hobbes, though the comics feel original despite the similarities.
This is the kind of book that should have been around when I was growing up. It's filled with great illustrations of Phoebe and her unicorn, Marigold, while they are on adventures and dealing with normal everyday issues.
The drawings are fantastic, the stories/comics are a mixture of hilarious, serious, thoughtful and just all around what a kid this age can relate to. I had not heard of this series before finding this on NetGalley for review, but I'm going to be looking for the rest to check out soon.
Phoebe has great parents who seem to encourage her to have fun with her imaginary unicorn. She has the best conversations with Marigold and she seems to really fit in her skin - regardless of whether she is weird or not. Sometimes you wonder if Marigold is Phoebe's imaginary friend or pet, or if Phoebe is Marigold's pet. ;)
Definitely recommend this book for ages 8-12.
