Description
The story of the love affair that inspired Edvard Munch to paint The Scream.
Now that she’s working as a maid for an admiral’s family, Johanne thinks her carefree summers are over. She doesn’t yet know that an infamous artist will lead her down a path of scorching chaos.
The admiral’s daughter has become obsessed with the painter, a man years older with a dark reputation. When a forbidden affair beings, and Johanne is asked to hide more than just secrets, she must decide whether to take the risk...
Seen through the eyes of a young maid who finds herself drawn ever deeper into the intense relationship between her mistress and the painter, The Girl Between explores how one of the most famous paintings of all time may have been inspired by an intoxicating love affair.

I am so torn on reviewing this book. I realize that it is loosely based on actual people. However, I got to the point where I was getting pretty fed up with the Admiral's daughter.
I guess I should tell you that this is the story of where Edward Munch got his idea for his most famous painting "The Scream". And after reading this book and dealing with the Admiral's daughter, that's exactly what I wanted to do, pun intended. I could not imagine living through it. Maybe that is what the author intended to do.
The book was interesting. I didn't really know a lot about the author. I knew of his painting - well this one at least. So at least I did learn some things which is good for the trivia side of my brain.
Thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
An interesting entry in the genre of fictionalized biographies of artists. Most of us only know Munch for "The Scream" and not for his other work or much of anything about his life so this was a very nice way to do that. I especially appreciated the opportunity to learn about Norway and Norwegian culture during the time frame. Tullik and Johanne are both well drawn and fascinating women in their own rights. It's well written and flows nicely. I'm going to look at Munch's art differently in the future- he was certainly a fascinating and challenging man, even if some of his decisions were not the best. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Understand that not all of this is going to be true (it's a novel after all) and try it for new insight.
