Description

The six little ninjas of Dojo Daycare and Dojo Daytrip are back for a third adventure—this time, planning a surprise birthday party for their master. Stealthy as ever, the ninja girls and ninja boys tiptoe around without a noise (or so they think) as they prepare for the celebration. Meanwhile, the master is spooked by the noises and shadows he senses around him. Is there a dragon over there? It’s a total dojo scare! Master must be more aware. He tells himself: If I use my ears and eyes, I won’t be taken by—

SURPRISE! Master gasps, then laughs and cries. He can’t believe his ninja eyes! Streamers, poppers, candles, cake—he’s delighted by the party and by the thoughtfulness of his little ninja charges. There’s even a gift: a dragon-in-the-box who pops out for one last scream.

Chris Tougas’s digitally rendered ninjas pop off the page once again in this laugh-out-loud story. Told in rhyming verse with a playful rhythm, accompanied by hilarious illustrations and big sound effects, Dojo Surprise makes for a riotous read-aloud with a kindhearted message.

Pre-K to 3rd Grade. Dojo Surprise is a cute and silly picture book. The dojo master goes about his day, but he can't shake the feeling that there is someone else there. He must be a wonderful teacher, because his stealthy ninja students manage to surprise him with a birthday party--but that's not the only surprise they have in store for the high-strung master!

The illustrations are so energetic and fun. I loved the little ninjas scampering around the dojo, while the master remains unaware. It would be a blast to read aloud, because of the rhyming structure and the many opportunities to shout!

Dojo Surprise is such a fun story. Every time Master screamed in fright my little one cracked up. The illustrations are bright, fun and full of action and, like most kids, my son LOVED the rhyming flow. We've read it 4 times today alone! Such a nice ending.

Dojo Surprise actually took me by surprise! This is the first tale I've read in Tougas' series and I look forward to reading the first two! With colorful, cute illustrations and silly rhymes, this story will have children giggling!

This is a cute and silly book about a group of ninja children planning a surprise party for their Dojo Master. It's told in rhyming verse and is fully of beautiful artwork. Great for ninja lovers young and old.

Dojo Surprise is sure to captivate the attention of young children with its playful rhyming verse, engaging cadence, and hilarious concept. Visually, the illustrations are eye-catching and rich with vibrant detail. Its repetitive phrases will allow children to join in and make the reading experience that much more enjoyable.

Putting on my teacher's hat, I think this text would be a wonderful way to explore rhyme, practice making predictions, and introduce sound effects and the use of speech bubbles to enhance meaning and engage their own readers (if students are encouraged to incorporate these aspects of the text into their own writing).

Aside from being useful for teaching/reviewing a variety of skills, this story is just plain fun to read and, as we know, it is so important for children to develop their own love of reading, through texts that make/keep them hungry for more! I think that this offering from Chris Tougas has the potential to be such a book.

Whenever I finish reading a story to my students, I then put it on display so that they may choose to read it during their independent reading time. I foresee this one being a hit with the early elementary crowd and the subsequent need to purchase more than one copy!

I will be purchasing this one (or a couple!) for my classroom library and will also be looking into other books by this author.

Some of the sentences were clunky and didn't flow with as well as others, but the rhyming was solid. It incorporates a good ratio of buzz words to action. I liked the repetition of the Dojo Master's phrase, like a mantra. It's something the kids could get involved in when reading the book. The story was good with a satisfying ending that kept the characters consistent. The artwork was beautiful! I loved it and would return to reading the book if only to look over the artwork again.

The little ninjas are up to something while the master is sleeping. While they are trying to be quiet and not wake the master they continue to wake and scare the master and he believes that a dragon is the cause of the mess and noise.

I absolutely love this series and I can't read this enough. This is great for all ages and kids that love ninjas and fun.
