Description
Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fueled twist on the classic fairy tale romance.
Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom. Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.
Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

Cinderella meets a Firefly-like fandom in this funny, swift contemporary tale. When teen hunk Darien Freeman accidentally texts Elle, they start exchanging text messages, neither realizing that she is the anonymous blogger who opposes his casting as the lead in the movie version of her favorite show, Starfield. Told through alternating perspectives and text messaging conversations, this is an enjoyable read with a great respect for the fandoms and an effortless weaving in of LGBT characters. Far-fetched? Maybe, but who doesn’t like to dream of a prince (actor playing space captain) and driving around in a pumpkin carriage (food truck)?
Funny and well-paced, I couldn’t put it down! I’d give this to readers of Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl and anyone who enjoys bright YA contemporaries.
Geekerella is a charming retelling of one of my favorite fairy tales. I love the quirky, geeky additions to this story. Elle was a perfect heroine -- smart, intelligent, not afraid to get what she wants. Her texts with Darien were cute and sweet and added another dimension to the story. This is a great book for fairy tales lovers and those who love geeky pop culture.
A great mash up of fairy tale and fan culture. Fun for any who has ever fanned out over a tv show, movie, book, or comic. Smart heroine who learns to take action and a hero who learns that some people are worth trusting.
Geek culture meets classic fairy tale! Poston is a fantastic writer and clearly ‘gets’ fandoms. This would make a great addition to any YA library.
This book was adorable. I loved the fangirl reimagined Cinderella plot and the flow of the story. I will be recommending this book to students and fans of fairy tales 2.0. Thank you!
I thoroughly enjoyed this title! It is a treat for all of us geeks out there to see an author throw in references to a variety of fandoms. In addition, it is also an excellent story of finding oneself, and what is really important, as well as ignoring those who want to bring you down. I loved the concept, and the author does an excellent job following through on the promise of the idea.
Funny, witty and adorable. Everyone loves a nerdy princess tale. There needs to be more out there! Loved this.
As soon as I read the description for this book, I knew that I'd love it. What's not to love about a book that reimagines a fairy tale as a modern day look into fandoms? I work with teenagers whose fandoms are their lives. They run instagram fan pages for their favorite books, they talk about the characters as if they're friends. So as I was reading this book, I couldn't help but think how much they'd love this nerdy and adorable book. It was so cute, and so perfect for anyone who passionately loves a fandom. I can't wait for our library to have a copy so that I can recommend it to our teen book club!
