Description

She saw it coming. She knew it would happen―but no one believed her.

Almost a year after tragedy shattered her family, sixteen-year-old Paige Thomas can’t break free from her guilt. Her mother ignores her, doting on her annoying little sister, while her father is a barely-functioning shell. He hopes a move to the quiet little town of Shadesboro PA will help them heal, but Paige doesn’t believe in happiness anymore.

On her first day at school, a chance encounter with a bullied eighth grader reawakens a gift Paige had forgotten, and ingratiates her into a pack of local outcasts. For weeks, they’ve been trying to cast a ritual to fulfill their innermost desires, but all they’ve done is waste time. After witnessing Paige touch the Ouija board and trigger a paranormal event, the girls are convinced another try with their new fifth member will finally work.

Once the darkness is unleashed, it’s not long before they learn it will give them exactly what they asked for―whether they want it or not.

She saw it coming. She knew it would happen―but no one believed her.

Nine Candles Of Deepest Black By Michael S.Cox

I received a free copy of this book from netgalley.com in exchange for and open and honest review .

About : Paige Thomas moves to a new town with her family after her older sister Amber dies in a drunk driving accident . As any family would be in the wake of this tragedy her family is in shambles, her dad who is a cop is a zombie in his own world who rarely speaks to anyone and her mom pays attention to her youngest sister Mellissa and ignores Paige completely .Mellissa has developed a fear of riding in cars because of the accident and when she is forced to ride in one she cries uncontrollably .Paige feels alone after moving to a new place and starting at new school right before fall when she joins a group of other outcasts: Mackenzie ,Sofia ,Renee and Santana.

They welcome her with open arms but each of the girls are unhappy, they each crave something they don't have, Mackenzie -her true love Cole who is in love with another ,Santana -whose family is broke living off teacher/banker salaries , Sofia who is constantly picked on by kids at school and has no friends, Renee's father abandoned her and her mom and Paige wants her father to snap out of his comatose state and pay attention to her like he did when her older sister was alive . Well isn't it a blessing that her new friends practice magic. Mackenzie comes up with and idea to cast a spell to get each of them all what they want . Little do they know magic comes with a price and not all friends with seemingly good intentions are made of sugar and spice .

What I liked : The story line and each of the girls wants were very realistic in the realm of what teenage girls would want nothing was way out there like wanting a magic talking unicorn or winning the lottery every month for life .I was happy with the amount of dark twists in the book there were little things to lighten the mood but when it got dark it stayed dark right up until the end .This book wasn't rushed in anyway either it took the time to cover everything description detail mood and to develop each and every character .

What I didn't like :I did say that the book wasn't rushed but it was very drawn out in a way that I didn't feel it needed to be, especially more towards the end as we were getting toward the wrap up of the main story finished I found myself cringing at the fact that there were more pages. I didn't hate this book or anything to that affect it just seem a little too long .I was also agitated by the character stereotypical outlines and personalities for example Sofia wears all black all the time ,likes goth bands (Not that there's anything wrong with that.), her class mates call her Wednesday and she lives above a funeral home which her parents run and own she so desperately wants friends but makes no effort to change .

I don't expect people to change for others , if you are content with who you are own it. I was just bothered by the fact that she was always upset that the other kids in her class didn't like her, she had a group of friends who accepted her so I guess I was just hoping and waiting that she would dust off the rain cloud and get a move on . I understand why she didn't otherwise her role would have diminished and the author would have had to think of something else or her but it was just so cookie cutter and in the box I did multiple face palms while reading this book .

Overall: The story line and plot were original to me I haven't read a book that has the sort of idea or tone that this book took on. The book was a little long winded at times but the ending was pleasing . The characters though a bit one dimensional except for that one who surprised me a bit were entertaining and interesting to see what would happened kind of way. This is also the perfect fall October creepy dark read if your looking for something to make your heart pound and chills to cascade over your arms this is a good book for that.

I received a copy of this book from netgalley for review.

I really enjoyed this book, but didn't quite love it enough for five stars. I'm not sure why, but it took me a bit longer to read than normal. I loved all the magic and the descriptions were great, though sometimes a bit much. Part of it reminded me of The Craft (the natural witch who was depressed, the one girl who let the power and desire go to her head, the spiders, etc). Luckily there were a lot of differences and it's more of what I wish The Craft would have been. A great read in October before Halloween.

Review: NINE CANDLES OF DEEPEST BLACK by Matthew S. Cox

This YA-themed, paranormal/occult thriller, is riveting. Author Matthew Cox develops his themes so subtly, placing his story in the hands of a small high school clique, seemingly harmless girls just having the normal identity crises and crushes of adolescence; oh, but... I was frequently reminded of the wonderful film "The Coven," in which a group of adolescent girls, seemingly unknowingly, mess with magic. In this novel, the ringleader eschews sweetness and light as oh too "new agey, Wicca, tree-hugging nonsense." She wants more: to compel the universe to provide the girls' true desires. She has wealth and charisma, and as a manipulator of the first order, she compels. The five open a portal so destructive it makes the hell mouth of Sunnydale ["Buffy the Vampire Slayer"] seem like a child's playground. This is a champion story not to be overlooked.

Paige Thomas and her family have moved to the quiet town of Shadesboro, PA for a fresh start and to heal after the loss of Paige’s older sister in a tragic accident. Paige blames herself in a way for the accident because she knew that it was coming and couldn’t get anyone to listen to her that night. Paige has visions and premonitions but of course everyone chalks it up to her imagination.

When Paige starts school in the new town she meets a group of girls who are more the local outcasts but Paige feels somewhat drawn to them. The new group has been messing around with practicing magic and when Paige touches a Ouija board and triggers a paranormal event they convince her that she is the fifth needed for their circle to begin real magic but of course things do not always turn out as one would like where magic is concerned.

Nine Candles of Deepest Black is a young adult horror read that while I could see touches of different stories or movies this book took on a life of it’s own and brought an action packed ride from start to finish. There’s ghosts, demons, witchcraft and all sorts of things involved in the story to make a great tale when finished.

Perfect for this particular time of year this book keeps you on your seat with not knowing what could come next. Of course messing around with witchcraft is probably obvious that things may go wrong but the girls start off with what seems to be good intentions to only find that they needed to be careful what they wish for as there is more than one way to obtain your end goal.

Overall, from creepy crawlies to ghosts and demons this was one action packed horror read.

Wow, that was really good. And scary. I was hooked from the moment the five girls met at the table in the cafeteria. That was in chapter one. So I was like glued to the couch with this book in my hands and my heartbeat goes up and my brain starts screaming. But I have to read on, because there is too much happening to put it down. Then people starting to get hurt and die and I start to fear that, maybe, Paige isn't going to make it till the end. But she is tough, so she has to be okay, right? Or not, who knows in this book no one is safe.
If you haven't already read this book, grab a copy and read it. But be prepared to get a ride you'll not forget easily. This book has it all: magic, spoiled brats, drama, fear, greediness and so much more.
