The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia blends gothic horror with Mexican folklore in a haunting narrative. Taking place in a secluded coastal town, the story centers on a young woman who explores sinister family secrets connected to her elusive father, all amid an escalating atmosphere of unease. Moreno-Garcia’s poetic writing and vivid world-building provide a gripping and eerie reading experience.
The beginning was super fan but the closer it got to the end I was more and more bored. It is a super fun book for most but I didn't enjoy it.
I was excited to read this book, even though I knew nothing of the plot. However when reading the book you quickly understand the doctor’s work and the stakes.
In the end, I must say I was a little disappointed. For a thriller, it is particularly flat and plain. It lacks mystery: everything is quite predictable - the intrigue is slowly developing but I knew too easily beforehand the direction it’s going. I would have loved more surprises, more plot twists… I would have kept me on the edge of my seat, whereas this did not.
Garcia-Moreno’s latest novel is a reimagining of The Island of Doctor Moreau, a book that I am unfamiliar with, so I can’t say what the author was influenced by from the original book. But I did enjoy the descriptions of the beautiful setting and the strangeness of the tale. And it certainly makes the reader think about the morality of creating life in the fashion of Doctor Moreau - something that very much would have once seemed impossible, but I’m sure our science is not far from nowadays, if not already there. This book was strange and whimsical and sometimes heartbreaking, but definitely an adventure.
This was good, but my least favourite of Moreno-Garcia's work. The pacing is off; it takes too long to get going, and then so much happens with so little explanation. I'm not sure whether this is all because I haven't read the book that inspired it, but not a favourite of mine.
I loved "The Island of Doctor Moreau", however I tried a few different times and just could not get into "The Daughter of Doctor Moreau."
Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an instant-read horror author for me. I always learn something about culture or humanity while also feeling positivley creeped out, and this book provided just that.
Huge fan of Silvia Moreno-Garcia! This was a bit challenging to get through as I was often stopping to look into words or phrases. I think if you go in knowing there’s challenging parts then the book can be really interesting. Once I got a hold of the storyline, I was hooked!
special thanks to Random House-Ballantine publishing, Silvia Moreno Garcia and NetGalley for an e-arc of this novel.
I can't believe I waited this long to read it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in one sitting. Awesome book.
It's listed as horror but I found it to be more of a historical fiction coming of age novel set in 19th century Mexico with a good bit of science fiction thrown in.
I really liked the main character, Carlotta and many of the other characters, plus a few that were not nice.
The book was well-written and I thoroughly recommend it.
The Daughter of Doctor Moreau is a fascinating gothic novel that takes on one of literary history's giants, The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells. Silvia Morerno-Garcia's adaptation is incredibly well thought out and incorporates more modern ideas. Similar to the original, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau brings up themes of about the nature of humanity and the human intervention of nature. The main character struggles with here identity and self-discovery, begging us all to think through exactly what it means to be human. While I loved Mexican Gothic, I found The Daughter of Doctor Moreau to be quite slow at times. Silvia Morerno-Garcia's writing is beautiful and enjoyable but much of the story was drawn out. While the slow pace seemed necessary early in the novel to add to the gothic element of the novel, in the end I found it to be daunting.
This is great historical and gothic approach to the classic sci-fi story I truly enjoyed and absolutely recommend you to read!
I really wanted to like it. There is that mysticism of the jungle and the Mexican mountains mixed with the gothic elements of a good historical history that catch you and lead you to open the book.
.
but when I started reading I felt that the story was slowing down. the rhythm was lost in the descriptions of the place and the characters .
.
I liked that it was a retelling of the H G Wells story, the island of dr. Moreau, created in the perfect setting and the general idea was really good
.
but I couldn't connect with the story, nor with the characters. I felt it was impersonal and if I can't get into the story through the characters or the plot, it's not a book for me.
.
But I really want to try another books by this author
.
Thanks to Silvia Moreno Garcia and Random House Publishing for give me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest and voluntary opinion
I read this because I loved Mexican Gothic. Even thought the writing was still beautiful, and the characters were strong and well-developed, it did not effect me as deeply as Mexican Gothic. That said I’m still a fan and will be recommending it to my friends.
Like her previous novel, Silvia Moreno-Garcia has another bestseller with The Daughter of Doctor Moreau. Named one of the best books of the year by The NYT Book Review, time, NPR and other outlets, this is the story of a young woman growing up on a fabulous estate far from the rest of the world. Her father is a researcher; he may also be insane, because he's experimenting with animal-human hybrids. This is a story about isolation and social injustice, but it also offers some romance, a vibrant setting, action scenes--and monsters. Reviewers have called it unsettling and eerie, and it is, but it's also hard to put down. Recommended.
I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I LOVE Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I honestly do not know how she does it. She is a chameleon of fiction genres. No two of her books are alike, and I find that fascinating.
This is a reimagining of the story of Doctor Moreau where intelligent hybrids are not only living in a community run by Dr. Moreau, but also living in the household as servants and friends of Carlota, the doctor's beautiful daughter. I have nothing negative to say about this story, it is intriguing, horrifying, and heart-wrenching all at once.
The book was an engaging retelling of the story of Doctor Moreau from the perspective of a young sheltered woman who is more than what she originally seems.
Wow. Just wow. I ate this story up. It was so good and spooky and thrilling. I can’t wait to see what this author writes next. This is a must read.
Haunting, compelling and addictive...this book by Garcia has all the hallmarks of her critically acclaimed talents. I am so glad I got to read it!
This was an okay read. Not my favorite among SMG's books but it still had interesting characters and amazing themes! A loose reimagining of the original story but I really liked how the author put her own unique twist on it.
I fear I need to stop expecting to love another Silvia Moreno-Garcia book. That's not to say this book, or any of her books, are bad. In fact, I think her range makes her one of the most talented artists currently writing, but there was just something about Mexican Gothic that I've not been able to find in any of her other books.
This was enjoyable. A real blending of genres. Perhaps if I was more familiar with the source material I would like it more.
I think I will stop requesting SMG arcs and just grab the ones that sound interesting as they come out at the library instead.
