I don’t know I think it’s probably a me thing. I didn’t love this book. I was bored and found some parts a little unbelievable. The narration was good. I’d try the author again.
The Girls on Chalk Hill is a strong start to the new Detective Lexi Bennett series. Detective Lexi Bennett has spent the last four years learning to be a profiler at Quantico. She is finally home and ready to lead her new department. Before she can meet her new team, she finds two bodies with identical white dresses and tiaras on her run. Her team quickly finds that the two girls are actually triplets, and the last girl is still missing. As the investigation continues, Lexi can't help but notice the similarities to her own case. When she was a child, Lexi and her two sisters were abducted by a man named the Triplet Killer and only Lexi and one of her sisters were able to escape. Can this man and the Triplet Killer be the same person?
This was a great start to the series. I enjoyed Detective Bennet's thoughts into the investigation as she confronts her past with her own case. The killers POV throughout the investigation was eerie and made me want to know his reasoning for his infatuation with Detective Bennet. I still had some questions by the end of this book, mainly with Detective Bennett's time in the states and hope the next book will delve deeper into her past at Quantico.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to review The Girls on Chalk Hill. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I listened to the audio of this book and for a book that goes in and out of timelines the writing and the narration was great and I never felt lost as to where I was in the book. The pacing was good and I was engaged in the book the whole time. There were surprises and the book did a good job introducing Detective Lexi Bennett. I am looking forward to more books in this series.
The was a basic and at times almost boring crime novel.
Lexi is the main character, torn between her haunting past and solving her current case.
I think the narration was something that led me to decrease my rating. Near the end I could not hear or understand the other view point.
I think I would read (but not listen to) the next book in the series.
The audiobook was provided to me by the publisher via NetGalley.
Unfortunately this audio title disappeared from my library when I had to do an update on my NetGalley app, or it has been archived and I no longer have access to it.
I have the ebook on my kindle and look forward to reading it some time in the future.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
I'm this novel we are introduced to Detective Lexi Bennett, as she investigates the murder of two sisters and the disappearance of the third (all triplets).
I found the coincidence that Lexi is also a triplet, and that her and her sisters were also all abducted a bit of a stretch when it comes to the "suspension of disbelief" that allows a person to become lost in a story. However, the story and Lexi's search for justice were well-written, and captivating.
I would be interested in reading further writing from this author.
The Girls on Chalk Hill is the first book in the Detective Lexi Bennett series. Lexi has a difficult past. She is a triplet and all three of them were abducted as teens. Rose was never found, while she and her other sister escaped. Not wanting to remain in the UK, she left for the United States and became a profiler with the FBI. She has now returned and on her first day in her new job as lead detective in Kent, there is a gruesome discovery. Two girls are found posed on Chalk Hill, dressed in white dresses with tiaras. They are identified as Lucy and Eden Carter, sisters, two of three triplets, with Paige still missing. This case has become personal for Lexi.
This was a great introduction to the series, with a dramatic introduction to the main character. Lexi is a strong character who has established herself as a standout Detective regardless or in spite of her background. It soon becomes apparent to the reader that the culprit is the same one from Lexi's past. The chapters are told from Lexi's and his perspective and he is creepy. It added that bone chilling feeling as I read. Although her boss wants her to step back, she is determined to see this case to it's end with the goal of bringing Paige home alive. I enjoyed the build up with the reveals and a few twists, but I did think the ending was a bit too quick and convenient. Having said that, I enjoyed the story and want to read more to see what is next for Lexi. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Sofia Zervudachi. She is a new narrator to me, but I will listen to other books she performs on. She had a good flow and expression while bringing the story and its characters to life. If you enjoy a crime thriller/police procedural, then I recommend you pick up, The Girls on Chalk Hill in any format.
4.5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️
What a thrilling ride. This is a Great new detective series.
The Girls on Chalk Hill is Addictive, compelling story with so many twists.
Sofia Zervudachi Narrated it so beautifully.
This is Book 1 in Alison Belsham’s new series of police procedurals with Detective Inspector Lexi Bennett.
Lexi has newly been appointed to lead the Major Investigation Team based in Canterbury, Kent and yet to meet the new team.
On her run, she finds two teenagers lying side by side on the quiet green hillside, their throats cut. She vowed to get justice for them.
She later finds out these girls are actually two in a set of triplets.. that hits so close to home... It stirred up painful memories for Lexi.
Lexi is also a triplet, and seventeen years ago she and her sisters had been abducted as teenagers and only two of them made it home.
Could it be the same man that abducted her and her sisters or a copy cat?
A great way to start this new series and I'm looking forward to the upcoming books in the series.
I really enjoyed this right from the get go. It moves at a very good pace and its filled with fascinating characters.
The whole depiction of activities of the police force as they investigate the crime was beautifully written, very realistic that you could just picture it all.. like watching a movie.
I exceptionally loved Detective Lexis character, aside her strong personality, there's also a softer side that makes her lovable.
Getting to the end of the book got my heart pounding... the suspense, anticipation and fear really got me at the edge of the seat. So good.
I'm excited about the other books as we'll get to know more about Detective Lexi.
Fans of police procedurals will definitely like this.
Thanks to Bookouture through Netgalley for this Audiobook.
The Girls on Chalk Hill by Alison Belsham and Narrated by Sofia Zervudachi is the first book in the new Detective Lexi Bennett series and what a brilliant start this was. I found the narrator Sofia excellent and she made the audiobook come alive.
I really enjoyed learning about DI Lexi Bennett character, she has just returned to Canterbury after a stint with the FBI in the United States. Just before her first day in her new job, she goes for a run and finds she finds the two teenagers lying side by side on the quiet green hillside, their throats cut. She hasn't even met her new team yet! But what a way to meet her colleagues and especially stumble on her first case!
The victims are identified as Lucy and Eden Carter. Then,Lexi’s blood turns cold. The sisters were triplets..........and the third girl, Paige, is missing.
Lexi, suddenly feels this case is frighteningly personal. Lexi was a triplet too, and she and her sisters were abducted as teens. Two of them escaped but Lexi’s dreams are still haunted by memories of the faceless man who took them, and her sister Rose , who she never saw again.
Are they connected to each other?
This audiobook/book is so good and a great page turner if you are reading it. It was a book that will have you gripped from the beginning till the end and I am looking forward to the next book in the excellent Detective Lexi Bennett series
I highly recommend this book 5 star read.
Big thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for giving me the opportunity to listen to and review this Audiobook ARC.
I really enjoyed this book! It had all the elements of a great mystery/thriller. It kept me engaged the entire time and I finished it in 1 day. Highly recommend.
Really loved this audio book. Amazing narration, enjoyed the plot & writing style. The characters have left me looking forward to the next one in the series.
Lexi Bennett is back in her home town Canterbury, after training with the best of the best in Quantico.
Before she can even introduce herself to her new colleagues, she finds two dead girls on Chalk Hill.
The way they were killed seems familiar...
This was a really good book with well thought out characters and a thrilling plot. I will definitely read the next book in the series.
This is an awesome serial killer thriller/police procedural, which I thoroughly loved and enjoyed. The narrator of the book did a great job.
The story is about Detective Lexi Bennett, who I loved and really related to. She comes across two teenagers who have been killed, and she finds out that they were triplets, and that one of the triplets is still missing. As she was a triplet herself, she resonates with this case, and she sets out to find the missing triplet and the killer. As time goes on, she finds out that the killer is the same person who abducted her and her sisters, killing one of them. She is determined to track him down and put an end to things, once and for all.
This is a superb thriller, which I recommend highly! I loved it so much, and I can't wait to read the next book in this series, which I have already bought, ready to enjoy soon.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
This new series starts with a bang! Lexi, a strong detective, suffered a horrible tragedy as a child. This case l brings her right back to there. The fast paced work of Lexi & the supporting cast to not only solve this current crime but hers as well is so engaging with things that you can’t imagine. I readily give this 5⭐️ and can’t wait for the rest of the #DetectiveLexiBennettseries.
Sofia Zervudachi is perfect as the talented narrator of the audiobook.
Thank you, Alison Belsham, Bookouture, Bookouture Audio & Netgalley for my audiobook! All opinions are my own.
This was an interesting introduction to Detective Lexi Bennett. I definitely enjoyed the narrator who also added to the suspense of The Girls on Chalk Hill so much that I am looking for the next visit with the next book in the series. Thank You NetGalley for this introduction.
I really enjoyed the unique storyline in this book. The connection between the current and past investigation was interesting and exciting. I loved Lexi as the main character! I look forward to reading about her future adventures.
Two dead bodies get us up and running in this fast paced book. The protagonist Lexi Bennet hasn’t even started her first day in her new job. Lexi is smart with a knowledge of FBI profiling and I loved her character. The added bonus is that this case is as personal as you can get. This allows us to be with Lexi throughout and experience how her past trauma is influencing the present in a clever and believable way.
I listened to this on audiobook so I wanted to give a shout out to the narrator Sodia Zervudachi who took it to the next level, clearly differentiating all the different POV characters both male and female.
What a start to the series! A recommended listen from me.
Triplet girls have been abducted - two of them killed and one is still missing. Detective Lexi Bennett is on the case and saying it hits close to home would be an incredible understatement. Lexi is also a triplet, who was abducted with her two sisters years ago. Out of the three sisters, only two of them made it home safely and their abductor has never been found. Now is Lexi's chance to get her answers and finally catch the killer that ruined her life so many years ago.
For me this book was your typical detective, who dunnit, mystery. I enjoyed the thread of the detective facing her captor all those years later. I liked that we got to follow the kidnapper around without knowing who he was. Definitely a good read, finished in two sittings.
4 Leave the girls alone stars!
I feel like I should insert some type of Triple Threat/Trouble joke here but I won’t.
Detective Lexi Bennet is back in her hometown to start a new job as the head of a major crimes unit after a few years overseas in the FBI. She gets an unpleasant welcome back, in the form of two girls’ bodies on her morning run, before she even makes it to her first day of said new job.
As if that weren’t stressful enough, the murder seems oddly familiar. Especially when Lexie finds out that the victims are two of three. Just like Lexie and her sisters, before one went missing when they were kidnapped as teens.
The cat and mouse games are on as Lexi discovers personal clues the killer is leaving for her, proving that he is the same man that took her and her sisters years ago. Now she is fighting against the clock to try and save the current missing girl, while facing all of her past trauma.
This book had me SWEATING. The tension building and atmosphere of dread was great. The case was interesting in the way of trying to figure out wtf the killer did it. I liked most of the characters and hated the ones I’m assuming the readers were meant to hate. Lexi was a strong female lead with flaws and I was rooting for her.
Overall this a twisty mystery ride that I would recommend for sure! I look forward to reading the sequel whenever it comes out!
Check this one out now!
A big thanks to the Publisher & NetGalley for gifting me a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! What an absolute axing start to the DI Lexi Bennet series. This has me hooked from the first paragraph, so many plot twists and red herrings that kept me guessing throughout. Will definitely be keeping up with this series as they are realised.
