Description
Eva Caldwell is an accomplished and well-known photographer who often works with the local constabulary to assist in documenting crime scenes, which means she also often works alongside the handsome and charming detective, Nathan Winston. She appreciates his intellect and how he treats her like an equal, but Eva’s heart is still healing from a past relationship, so, for now, she decides to keep her feelings for Nathan a secret.
One evening, Nathan arrives on her doorstep asking for a personal favor. Would Eva be available to photograph his mother’s legendary, week-long dinner party and matchmaking event? The catch is that Eva would also have to pretend they are courting in order for Nathan to avoid the many single women seeking his attention.
Though wary of the charade, Eva agrees. Spending a week with the two things she loves most—her detective and her camera—sounds simple enough. And if she wants to imagine that Nathan’s pretend courtship of her is real, well, what’s the harm in that?
But when a criminal from Nathan’s past threatens revenge on the detective, Nathan must be extra vigilant to keep his mother and the rest of the partygoers safe. He confides in Eva, and as the two work together to solve the mystery and apprehend the criminal, they find that they might capture more than they expected—each other’s heart.

I love the way Allen writes a story! You get a little action and adventure, some good history and a sweet amazing romance! Their story starts in The Matchmakers Lonely Heart. You can read this independent of that, but why would you! That one was so good too:} Nathaniel is awesome! I loved his little smile and his honesty! Eva is an independent female who has been hurt before and is not going to fall for any man:} These two have such a lovely story. I always like Allen's mystery and action she writes into her books. She really does it so well. Just loved everything about this story.
Proper romance with no religion.
I loved everything about this! The plot seemed unique and original with the photography business. There was mystery and intrigue, a house party, fake dating and swoon!
🕵🏻
I really loved Allen’s first book in the series, The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart, and I was so happy to see there would be another book in the series! This can be read as a stand alone, if you were to read it out of order you wouldn’t be lost as it recaps things from the first book.
🕵🏻
I loved Eva and how she was a strong independent women. She didn’t back down from the other ladies present and she is a loyal friend but willing to be vulnerable. Nathan is as dashing as any hero can be and he loves his family. Which is even sweeter! He went to such lengths to keep them safe but there’s always something or someone to undo carefully laid plans.
🕵🏻
Pretty much the moment I saw the arc available on Net Galley, I downloaded it ASAP. This book doesn’t release until October 2022. And now that I want the next book in the series which means I’ll have to wait even longer 😅
🕵🏻
I love Allen’s work and she continues to show she’s an auto buy author for me. These are my own thoughts and opinions.
Content: death, mild depictions of blood and injuries, brief fighting
TY Netgalley and Shadow Mountain for the ARC!
I haven’t read the first book in this series, which is all good! It follows the regency/historical romance series format where you jump to new protagonists in each installment. Now I’ll definitely check out the first one :)
Overall, very cute - found family, friends to lovers, fake dating… all under the umbrella of a murdery mystery (?) house party. (fyi - this series is not spicy)
This book checks the boxes - the only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars was because I felt like once there is finally a moment of, “hey, I love you,” it was not totally clear. One MC was still in doubt, which was out of character even considering her past. So just a bit sticky.
BUT IT WAS CUTE. we love cute
To Capture His Heart by Nancy Campbell Allen is a great historical fiction/romance that I truly enjoyed.
I enjoyed Ms. Allen’s previous book, The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart, so I was excited to read this one. I enjoyed it just as much.
This takes place in England 1886. I just love that timeframe, and the author does a wonderful job transporting us back to the Victorian era. The descriptions of the culture, society, and background were spot on.
This book has a lot of wonderful elements: mystery, suspense, romance, history…it all wraps up nicely into a charming and relaxing narrative.
I love the Author’s take on the relationship based on “business” and agreement that then turns to romance. Eva and Nathan work well together professionally and also romantically. Their chemistry is obvious to us readers, it just takes a bit for the characters themselves to figure it all out as well. They both bring something different to the table and it complements one another well.
I loved the pacing, storyline, and I enjoyed the satisfying ending.
5/5 stars
Thank you NG and Shadow Mountain Publishing for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 10/12/22.
I didn’t want this book to end. I love the house party trope, especially when there is intrigue and family dynamics along with the romance. This combination makes for a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience.
The books in the Proper Romance series are the perfect blend of romance and mystery. To Capture His Heart has great characters. I fell in love with Detective Nathan and adored Sammy, the former street urchin turned Eva’s photography assistant. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this engaging series.
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this story and, as always, Nancy Campbell Allen did not disappoint! Her writing style is fun, fast paced, and enjoyable, all of which this book is! I love her characters, they are relatable.
Eva is a strong, independent women. She is a photographer, running her own business, something still frowned upon by society, but she does not care. She loves her work, especially since is means, as times, she can be in the presence of Detective Nathan Winston. With little hope or designs to even catch his eye beyond her professional abilities, simply being able to work with him is enough.
Nathan has been in love with Eva since the day he met her and her independent personality. But that is just it, she is independent, there is no way she would be interested in him. However, when forced by his mother to attend another house party where available young ladies will be in attendance, he fibs and tells his mother his intentions lie with Eva. Forced to invite her to the house party, to be a guest and a photographer, he admits his folly and she agrees to go along with the idea of being a smitten couple. However, mystery abounds when signs from a criminal from Nathan's past show up at the house party.
I really enjoyed this book once it picked up a bit! It was witty, compelling, and romantic all in one and I liked it!
This is a sweet romance with a little crime thrown in. I was attracted to the book by the hero & heroine's backgrounds - she is a photographer and he is a police detective with society connections. But I didn't think it fulfilled it's potential. The characters were rather bland and seemed very generic without much depth. They chose such unconventional professions, I would have expected more complex personalities. Even the crime solving was without much suspense. It just felt as if all possible spice or edges to both characters and plot, which would have been natural given the situation, were flattened out. I guess it was all much too sweet for me so maybe it's just a matter of taste..
Nancy Campbell Allen makes me laugh. Eva has depth and she struggles with things but she doesn’t let it stop her from living her life. Nathan is a dream, he cares about her and is honest with his feelings.
I loved this book even more than the first one!
To Capture His Heart features photographer Eva Caldwell and Detective Nathan Winston, both of whom readers will remember from the first book.
Following the happy nuptials of their friends, we meet Eva and Nathan again. Both of them are trying to ignore their affection for one another - and they’re both failing miserably.
When Nathan mistakenly tells his mother he’s interested in courting her when she resurrects her matchmaking schemes a fun take on the fake lover trope unfolds.
This was a quick paced read for me and equal parts intriguing and entertaining. I only wish the mystery elements and action had been longer!
This book was provided by Netgally and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an honest review. All of the thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a quintessential Victorian murder mystery romance book any fan of Veronica Speedwell and Sherlock Holmes will absolutely love.
There is a perfect balance of mistery plot line and the romance that follow it.
I loved this book so much I have a few questions :Where is the world has this books author been hiding from me? Are there more?
Eva and Nathaniel have cured my book slump in their persut for love and crime solving and I I'm hooked on it.
When is the next one coming out and can I get it now?
5 stars alllll around (would give it more)
Nancy Campbell Allen's "To Capture His Heart" follows "The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart". Evangeline Caldwell, another Hampton cousin, mixes work with a "pretend" romance with Inspector Nathaniel Winston. A colleague of the first book's protagonist, Nathan unravels an interesting murder-mystery with the help of photographer Eva.
The action unfolds at a house party hosted by Nathan's mother, an "entertainer extraordinaire". By throwing together a couple of "mean girls", charming sisters and intriguing gentlemen, Christine Winston has the makings of a successful and memorable (read infamous) house party.
Characters, likable or not, are all well-drawn. The villain was thankfully not obvious to me. Banter is lively and witty, and the then-tedious process of early photography is described. This short novel is clean and there are few grammatical errors. As always, Nancy Campbell Allen's prose is lovely. Charlotte Duvall, the remaining Hampton cousin, hopefully gets her own story.
Thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an ARC of this enjoyable novel.
I read "Secrets of the India Orchid" a few years ago and, from then on, i was hooked on Nancy Campbell Allen's books. Oftentimes period romances feel like the same story over and over again, but Nancy Campbell Allen's always feel fresh, especially with her knack for creating interesting settings and quirky characters. I couldn't wait to read "To Capture his Heart" and it was everything I'd hoped for!
Nate and Eva have worked together for a year as a detective and photographer. They are interested in each other, but neither has spoken of it due to personal reservations and fear that it would ruin their friendship. Nate's mother announces that she is going to host a house party, and in an attempt to prevent other women from spending the entirety of the party trying to catch his eye, Eva agrees they will feign feelings for each other. A criminal from Nate's past comes back to haunt him, an angry young woman tries to pull Eva and Nate apart, and the pair realize they wish their pretend relationship was more real than either realized- definitely an eventful house party! The relationship between Nate and Eva felt so realistic and sweet. It was full of communication and maturity- something I feel often lacks in "clean romances" sometimes. The criminal who was back to get revenge did not feel like an afterthought, but rather an integral part of the story, which is often another complaint I have in romance driven books.
I loved "To Capture His Heart," and I cannot wait to read the next installment in this series! Highly recommend to anyone who loves clean romances or period pieces.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The story is rather fast paced yet doesn't seem to feel rushed in any way. The tension and suspense the looms in the shape of Mr. Toole's haunting presence acts as the perfect catalyst to spur the reader into a sense of urgency upon reading. We're also provided with the cruelty and drama of the social setting which adds another layer of tension to the situation that equally drives the pace forward.
Our heroine is intelligent, caring, and daring, Evangeline (or Eva) who works as a portrait photographer in a time where women were relegated to just a handful of “appropriate” jobs outside of being a wife, mother, and running a home. She's fast on her feet and smart as a whip and uses her problem solving abilities often. She's content in her life without a marriage yet not devoid of want for a romantic love. And like Nathan she looks out for those around her and takes all under her wing if they should desire it.
Nathan is the the stereotypical elder son and head of his family, and bachelor who loves his job, Nathan doesn't love the idea of a marriage. Well at least now the idea of marriage unless it's to Eva it seems. He is a detective and friend to the photographer, their mutual respect laying the foundation for his affection to blossom. Nathan is a good son to his mother, going as far as to appreciate and understand her genius in it's entirety and crediting the success of the family to her, and a good brother to his sisters. Nathan looks out for everyone, especially those who are in a position where they cannot do so themselves or have had a difficult time in the past.
I absolutely adore that the story truly reads like an old romance novel. It adds such a romantic aura to the experience as well as creating an entirely enveloping atmosphere. Allen transports you to 1886; her time researching the time period showing beautifully as she paints the setting of Seaside, England. Just as charming as the author's writing style is the dialogue. It's engaging and each character has a clear personality that shines through. Even the minor characters such as Nathan's mother's dialogue encapsulates who she is and fleshes her out to make her feel just as real as everyone else. It truly shines through in regards to the main cast especially.
This is the first book I've read by Nancy Campbell Allen and at thirty four percent I know in my heart that she is an author with whom I share a kindred spirit. Her writing is compelling and heart felt and beautiful. Not only that but her writing feels familiar and easy to read. I feel as if I've picked up a letter from a friend sharing her story. I will most definitely be looking forward to reading the rest of Allen's works and recommending “To Capture His Heart” to anyone who will listen.
This is a very quick read. The characters are very likable and their romance is easy to root for, plus fake dating is a top-tier trope. Fans of regency romance and mystery will enjoy it.
Wonderful characters and story.
A captivating book showing another side to this era. Evangeline, Eva, is a single woman working as a photographer at time when women simply didn’t do that kind of work. In the past she had been called out to photograph a crime scene and while there had met Nathaniel, a police officer. Soon they were spending more time together as Nate’s partner and Eva’s friend married. So, when Nate is cornered by his socialite mother to attend a house party with the obvious goal of finding him a wife while also introducing his sisters to society, it was almost natural to claim an interest in a woman to protect himself from the unwanted plans. When pushed by his mother for more information about the woman, including a name, he names Eva. Quickly Eva is invited to the house party not only as a participant but to photograph the proceedings and Nate must explain to her why she was invited and why he needs her presence as a deterrent if not protection. Unfortunately, Nate not only has to be on his guard for one particular young woman trying to trap him into marriage but he must also watch his family since he has made an enemy among the criminal population and he is out for revenge. This book is fast paced and engaging with characters that will touch your heart. A great read. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy. This is my review and all thoughts are my own.
After reading the first book in this series (multiple times) I was so excited to read this and let me tell you it did not disappoint t. It was an absolutely delightful read. I loved the mystery, adventure and most especially the romance. It was fun with catch up with Michael and Amelie again too. I can’t wait for Charlotte’s story. Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the copy. This is my review and all thoughts are my own.
I love Nancy Campbell Allen and her books! To Capture His Heart was just as great as I expected. Nancy’s very good at writing romantic suspense. I couldn’t put it down until I knew what happened and until Eva and Nathan had their happily ever after.
Eva and Nathan were so cute together. I love when things happen that I did not expect and one surprise was the great communication between Eva and Nathan. It was refreshing. They didn’t exactly keep things from each other and if either of them thought to keep a secret, those didn’t last long because they’re both are overly observant.
Read it for the:
- friends to lovers
- fake relationship trope
- mystery subplot (and twist!)
- intriguing cast of characters
- house party setting
Final rating: 4/5
Content overview: clean. No swearing, no explicit scenes
Trigger warnings - murders
Heat level - sweet romance with kissing scenes
Evangeline Caldwell is a talented photographer with graceful collected demeanor. Because of her career and connection to Scotland Yard via her cousin, She has worked with Detective Nathan Winston often on crime screens, and an easy friendship and respect developed between the two. Also growing was an attraction that both were hesitant to address. An unexpected opportunity in the form of a house party allows for Nathan and Eva to explore a relationship beyond friendship. They only need to avoid the dangerous criminal bent on revenge against Nathan.
This was a lovely romance with a dash of mystery. The main plot focused on the relationship between Nathan and Eva. Eva had to overcome past hurts and decide what she wanted in life to allow herself to see Nathan in a light other than friendship. This played off well with Nathan’s character, who knew exactly what he wanted. The progression of the romance felt natural. Both had great chemistry with each other.
The back drop of a house party was entertaining as you are introduced to new characters like Nathan’s sisters and mother. They brought a humor and light hearted touch to the story.
This is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand alone without missing any details. However, I liked seeing characters returning from the first book to see how they were getting along.
The mystery was great, and the plot twist and reveal of the villain was a shock to me. I enjoyed not knowing what was going to happen to next.
Overall, I enjoyed the read and would recommend to anyone looking for a romance with a side of mystery.
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read and review this wonderful book ahead of publication date. Although an ARC was provided to me, This review is my own, and will be shared on other platforms.
Friends who actually do legit like each other from the previous book, Eva and Nathan, agree to fake an interest in each other to save him from matchmaking at his mother's house party. Meanwhile, a previous case from Nathan's past presents dangers. This fell slightly short for me, maybe it's the difference between listening to the audio version of the previous book and reading this one, but I feel it lost momentum in some parts. A few too many moments of the house party and not enough of the mystery plot. The characters are likeable and the writing is solid, it just dragged a bit for me. I also prefer when I have at least a chance of pinpointing the villain in a mystery, and because of how it unfolded, I didn't see how I could have predicted the villain. I still look forward to the next book, Charlotte and I assume Ellis(?). Just under four stars for me, entertaining enough for a quick read, but I'm not sure I'll remember it in a couple of months. I received an ARC from the publisher and netgalley for review.
I was going to tag this a historical mystery, but after finishing the story, I thought it was more a HR with light suspense.
DI Nathan Winston was such an endearing hero; a kind and good man who truly loved Miss Eva Caldwell. He did everything properly because he didn’t want to scare her off, not knowing that she was learning of her love for him. His actions and words spoke volumes. I enjoyed his character and wish more authors would learn from this.
I really wish I read The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart, the first story in this series, because this is where Nathan first met Eva.
If you can handle kisses-only, a sweet H and a little bit of a mystery, consider reading this romance. Next, I look forward to Charlotte’s story.
Thank you to NetGalley, Nancy Campbell Allen and Shadow Mountain for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun read! I enjoyed the first book and I was excited to see that there was going to be another addition to the series. To Capture His Heart is the second book in Nancy Campbell Allen’s Matchmaker series.
This was such a sweet book to read! The characters are easy to read and connect with. I adored both Eva and Nathan. They both felt like complex characters, but I loved getting to know them. Eva was so strong but she was also weary of others. I loved seeing her strengths and reading about her falling for Nathan. Nathan was sweet, I adored his relationship with his family. He was trying so hard to protect those he cared for. It was cute to read about him falling for Eva and trying to protect her.
I enjoyed the blend of mystery with romance. I was on the edge of my seat trying to finish the book! Eve and Nathan were getting to know each other at the party all the while trying to stay safe. Nathan and Eva would have to come together as they face a criminal from Nathan’s past.
I liked this one even more than the first book. I loved the characters, the story, and the romance. The side characters were fun and I hope that Nathan’s sisters get their own books! I would definitely recommend this book, it can be read standalone but it is so much more fun to read in order. To Capture His Heart is a clean historical mystery romance.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required.
TO CAPTURE HIS HEART by NANCY CAMPBELL ALLEN is a delightful historical thriller that is full of romance and suspense and with an exciting plot.
Starting with beautiful photograper Evangeline Caldwell and her young assistant Sammy White, handsome detective Nathan Winston, his four practically identical sisters and his mother Christine, and going on to the less savoury Blanche Parker and Mathilda Dilworth, there is an interesting array of characters.
Mrs Christine Winston arranges a ten day house party with allkinds of entertainment at her Seaside holiday home, inviting an interesting group of young people, as well as her two best friends The only way Nathan can face the ten days surounded by young ladies who are only too keen to change his bacherlor status is if he pretends that he and Eva are romantically involved. This charade, together with the news that the criminal, Bernard Toole, is in the area and is after his family, keeps him on his toes……
I highly recommend To Capture His Heart as a most enjoyable read.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Shadow Mountain Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
I really liked this one, even more than the first!
Eva and Nathan have known each other for some time, from their mutual friends and in a professional capacity. They feel an attraction but haven't done anything about it so far.
This all changes when Nathan asks Evan to come photograph his mother's house party and pretend to be courting him. The new dynamic is just what they both need to move their relationship to more.
I also liked the mystery they try to solve, the criminal mind and the others with nefarious intents, and the way these situations escalate while bring Eva and Nathan together.
Catching up with old characters was also a treat.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
This was a solid second book in the Matchmakers series! I enjoyed the few glimpes I got of the characters from the first book. And it was wonderful to dive into Eva and Nathan's story. I loved the chemistry and banter their two characters had with each other. I was also happy to see that the author didnt use any misunderstandings between the two to further the story--they were always a team and always had each other's backs. Eva is such a strong loyal character. And they had some sweet kisses. The only thing that I struggled with at times was the pace of the story--it had some slow spots.
“"Continue saying such things to me and shall drop to one knee this very moment and profess my adoration." He meant it as a jest. Of course, he did.”
A house party, a thoughtful meddling mother, a chance to win over Eva’s heart and a criminal seeking revenge, what could possibly go wrong for Detective Nathan Winston?
To Capture His Heart was a fun sequel to The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart. This book focus on Detective Nathan Winston, who we meet in the previous book. And his crush Eva Caldwell, a up and coming photographer. Nathan’s mother is doing a house party and Nathan doesn’t want to deal with some of the party goers advances and convinces Eva to come and pretend to be interested in each other. Which we all know how well that goes. Lol.
I did really enjoy getting to know Nathan and Eva better. They were so different from the main characters from the previous book. Nathan is charming, lighthearted and a dedicated work. Eva is calm and caring, but knows how to put someone in their place. Eva has been hurt in the past which does cause a small problem for Nathan. But he doesn’t let that stop him from showing/proving to Eva he loves her.
I think my only problem with this book was that I thought the person seeking revenge on Nathan would be more of a prominent part of the book and it was more of a subplot. Yes it all tied together nicely but I was expecting more. This made the book seem a little slow at first. It was still enjoyable once I got over the realization the book was gonna focus more on the house party and Nathan and Eva falling in loved.
This book can be read as a stand alone.
Thanks NetGalley and Shadow Mountain for the ARC. These thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a fun and entertaining story. I loved all the characters from the get go. I found it so refreshing how open and up front Nathan was about his feelings for Eva because I hate it when the main plot line is a miscommunication of some sort and this did not have that. I always enjoy a good mystery, too. Most of the action happened near the end but it was worth the wait. All in all, a great book and I can’t wait to read Charlotte’s story.
4 stars
Very clean story but there's a fizz of passion just from touching hands. A thriller when a villain is stalking the hero, heroine and young companion. I didn't guess the baddie so that says something.
A quick delightful read. My only negative was I didn't think the head of the police force in Victorian times would have been called Director.. Wikipedia tells me https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Metropolitan_Police that Commisioner and Superintendent sounds a better name.
I enjoyed the writing and will look out for more of the author's work.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received this ARC thanks to NetGalley. I absolutely loved this book. It combines by love of history, romance, and mystery. I loved the main characters and the plot was fun and fast-paced with the right combination of mystery and romance. If you love mysteries, historical novels, or romances you will want to read this book.
This series is so fun. I really enjoyed the first book and this one was no different. Eva and Nathan are a super cute couple who like each other from the start. they were both so insecure in their feelings and I loved the way he was patient with her, The only thing I didn't love about their relationship was how we just jump into it with no backstory. Even in the first book, nothing is specifically mentioned about their attraction to one another. But other than that they were great together and I loved the building of their relationship, even if it was a little quick.
The villian was interesting and I wish that story could have been explored a little more too. But all around I felt the premise was believable and it kept my interest for the whole book. There is a little bit of suspense, yet nothing overdone. This is a fun, not too serious, quick read, which I will find myself re-reading again and again. Loved it I can't wait for the next installment. I will recommend this to my friends, for sure!
I received a copy from Netgalley for my honest review of the book.

Eva Caldwell is a popular photographer. She occasionally assists the police by stepping in for their crime scene photographer. Detective Nathan Winston is drawn to Eva and has worked with her in the past. When he accidentally let it slip to his mother that he admires Eva, she decides to set the two up as a match. Nathans's mother is now throwing a 10-day party and matchmaking event. Best of all she hires Eva to photograph the event. Eva and Nathan join forces and pretend to be courting for the duration of the party but when Nathan's enemies are after them, the fake relationship could turn into more.
I loved this novel! It reminded me of the tv series 'Miss Scarlet and the Duke'. I love a good historical fiction that includes the love interests working together. I would absolutely recommend this book to family and friends.
I love a Victorian setting almost as much as I love a good house party, throw in a fake relationship trope and what more could a girl want? This was a fun mash up of a lot of my favorite things and I enjoyed the cheerful wit and candor of these characters. The mystery thread becomes more prominent as the plot progresses, as did the romance! I enjoyed the setting of the house party and thought it provided a fun backdrop of a variety of activities for the characters as the reader untangles the mystery and watches their romance blossom. There were admittedly a few surprises that I didn’t see coming and the conclusion was thrilling and dangerous! I enjoyed this Victorian Romance!
After reading the first book in this series by Nancy Campbell Allen called The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart I decided that Regency romance mysteries were my new favorite genre. This book has not changed that opinion at all!
Eva is a woman of her own making. She is a photographer who makes a living taking portraits and sometimes photographing crime scenes. She also secretly admires Detective Inspector Nathan Winston.
Nathan is not interested in the female gentry his mother wants to throw him together with at her annual fundraising house party. To get his mother of his back he tells her of his interest in a photographer and recruits Eva to the house party to play at being his love interest as well as to photograph the event.
What I loved about this book was that I never did guess who the real bad guy was. It had a bit of a Clue vibe where I continued to wonder Who Dunnit?? Ms Allen has created the perfect blend of romance, history, and mystery. It was fabulous!
I also loved the chemistry and romance between Eva and Nathan and how it didn't drag on throughout the entire story. We got to enjoy their romance and feelings during the story and the sneaking around scenes were so so cute!
I loved how after the first initial encounter with Mean Girl Blanche, Eva started to stand up for herself. She didn't wait for Nathan to rescue her. She was confident and outspoken and strong. Eva can be summed up with this perfect quote:
“My mother had a saying, Mr. Smythe— loosely translated, it is this, ‘A man who finds himself threatened by a woman is not truly a man.’”
This is a must read (after you read The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart of course, if you haven't already)!
Things to know about content: no language, some violence (but not graphically described), and some kissing.
Thank you Netgalley and Shadow Mountain publishing for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
This book is the second in the Proper Romance Victorian Series by Nancy Campbell Allen. I liked the first one, but really enjoyed this one about Eva Caldwell and Nathan Winston, the handsome Detective Inspector. He has been enthralled with her from the beginning. She knows her heart is involved but doesn’t want to be hurt again. They work together from time to time as she photographs crime scenes, as he investigates those crimes.
Things change when Nathan’s mother plans her annual house party for charity and matchmaking. He tries to tell his mother he is in love with someone so she will not require his attendance. His mother isn’t persuaded to let him stay home but keeps asking details about this woman he describes. He is unintentionally describing Eva and he knows he is in trouble when his mother wants to extend an invitation. Like all house parties with single people, there is attraction, jealousy, fun, and some intrigue. Nathan is highly sought after, and he uses his attraction to Eva to deflect attention from his single state. This story is sweet, smart, and mysterious. Your mind is always working to figure out the different people and their motives and actions. It was a fun read that kept me thinking about it at times I was doing other things. It is a clean, sweet romance that will make you smile, while providing some intrigue and mystery to add to the fun. I will read this book again and again.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are voluntary and unbiased and are completely my own opinion.
This was a fun, engaging, escapist historical romantic suspense that leans farther toward "romance" than "suspense" in its genre distinction--unlike the first book in this series. I am a previous fan of Allen's writing and this series in particular, and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to explore Eva's love story. Eva, Sammy, and Nathan were all wonderful characters, the side characters all felt distinct and interesting, and I enjoyed the romance setup (a multi-day house party) quite a bit. However--I cannot help but compare the "suspense" elements to the excellently plotted and paced first book (The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart), and herein lies my mild disappointment with this book overall. I should preface these criticisms with the fact that I DID thoroughly enjoy the book, I just did not love it.
The mystery/suspense element felt entirely removed from the overarching plot of the novel for the bulk of the story, and this disconnect is especially felt in the first half. The reader is not introduced to the villain and his crimes immediately (as in the first book) but is instead Nathan info-dumps his history with Toole in a lengthy internal monologue several chapters into the book after the romantic set-up has already been established. For the majority of the story, Toole does not feel like an urgent threat because the reader is told--not shown--his crimes, and we are never given a clear picture of his motivations beyond "revenge". Right up until the final confrontation at the end (particularly with the way the suspense plot wraps up), Toole never feels like a fully-fledged character, which in turn makes the suspense elements feel ham-fisted and out of place. The catty interpersonal dramas between female characters felt far more high-stakes than the actual murder and intrigue, and the bulk of the build-up to Toole (beyond his one(?) actual crime before the climax) simply involves repeated mentions that Nathan has increased security. In the first book in this series, Radcliffe and his dastardly deeds are a constant presence throughout, so the two "halves" of the story feel seamless. Here, it felt like the reader had to be constantly reminded through dialogue about Toole's looming threat because he wasn't actually present in the story enough to feel threatening. The final confrontation with Toole also feels absolutely hand-waved, and he remains non-threatening, non-lethal, and non-essential right up until the end.
I will be continuing on with this series simply because the first book was so phenomenal--and I desperately want to see Charlotte's story! I just could not help but feel a little bit letd0wn by this entry.
Thank you to NetGalley for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
"To Capture His Heart" was a very enjoyable book. It's been a while since I read such a good a 19th-century romance!
Coming after "The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart", this second book follows characters that were introduced in the first book of the series. Eva and Nathan, a photographer and detective, have known each other for a while thanks to their work, which sometimes overlap, but they've never dared show their feelings to the other.
On the occasion of a house party organised by Nathan's mother, both protagonists get to know each other better - indeed, they've had many meaningful dialogues, which was appreciable as it really shows why both characters are well suited to each other. I also particularly enjoyed that all characters were well-developed, including secondary characters such as Nathan's sister. And our two protagonists had real depth and were not two-dimensional, as they had, for instance, days when they woke up irritable or became grumpy because of lack of sleep...
The romance was enjoyable, well-written, and took most of the book, while the intrigue (following the one that began in the previous book with Mr Toole) was interesting and a welcome addition to this house-party based book. It added a bit of spice and mystery!
Lastly, I appreciated understanding more of late 19th-century customs, habits, the increased independence of women... And it was especially interesting to learn how they made photographies at the time!
Overall, a great 19th-century romance that I would recommend.
*I received a free eARC and this is my honest opinion*
My oh my… this was so cute and wholesome. It took me a while to get into the setting and the story. (I haven’t read „The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart“ which is book 1 in the series) But I instantly fell in love with Nathaniel Winston! Eva was such a great character and they had amazing chemistry. I love a good houseparty trope and his family was just chef’s kiss!
If you love friends-to-lovers, simping, fake dating regency style and a little investigation YOU HAVE TO READ THIS.
Eva is a well known photographer and often works alongside the detectives Michael Baker and Nathan Winston. When Nathan approaches her to come with him to his mother’s week-long dinner party, she agrees out of friendship. But friendship soon turns into more…
#netgalley
I admit I am a junkie for Nancy Allen Campbell's books. I love her fairy tale steam punk series, and I love this new series.
We first met Eva in The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart. She is a photographer, a woman assured of herself, living with her Aunt and one cousin now as another cousin was just married. She has done some work for the police department and has worked with Nathan Winston many times over the past year.
Nathan is a gentleman, who desired an occupation. His family supports this but also wants to see him married. And Eva keeps catching his eye!
So, throw in a house party, a felon who wants revenge for his family's incarceration, mean girls, intrigue and the recipe for success is created.
This is a fun read, well written, with likeable and unlikeable characters! You root for the good, and the bad may surprise you!
tl;dr
Romance and mystery are mostly balanced (with romance pulling into the lead just a bit), in a very satisfying story with two likable leads.
About
Eva Caldwell has worked hard to make a name for herself as a photographer, and her skill has not gone unnoticed - she's even called upon to photograph crime scenes when the need arises. The work is good, and the company, a certain Detective Nathan Winston, is even better. So when Detective Winston asks her to pose as his beloved for a week, she's thrilled. But a criminal from one of Nathan's past cases has arrived seeking revenge, and Eva isn't sure what's more difficult - solving the case, or keeping her true affections for Nathan in hiding.
Thoughts
I love a fake romance trope, and I love a romance where the characters are honest with each other. I know these sound like opposing ideas, but Nancy Campbell Allen has somehow managed to make both of these ideas come to the table in an extremely satisfying way. The two leads are very easy to cheer for. Eva is smart, complex, and empathetic. Nathan is thoughtful, clever, and modest. The two of them feel SO very meant for each other, and their chemistry feels very natural.
Supporting cast are all interesting, with Sammy being an easy favorite. I often approach books about "strong female lead" types with trepidation, because they so often fall into the "not like other girls" trope as well. I am pleased that this is not the case here, with several women of varying natures and distinct personalities. There are definitely a couple catty types, but they are presented as an outlier. Nathan's mother, in particular, is a delight.
The mystery unfolds at a quick pace, and I absolutely ate it up. This is definitely more a read-along mystery, rather than a solve-along, but the reveal felt like it was reasonably hinted at, and the twists all made sense.
This book is a spinoff of another one. While the previous book isn't necessary reading, newcomers do have a little bit of catching up to do, and the first few chapters are packed with a lot of information to be learned in a short amount of time. Once you catch up, though, it's very smooth reading from there. I had a great time, and I will definitely be seeking out the author's other works.
The second book in the Matchmaker series, To Capture His Heart may be read as a stand alone but reading the first book in the series, The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart, will only enhance your enjoyment of this one. Both are terrific.
Eva is one of three cousins in Victorian England who swell spoken ladies but not shrinking violet’s. Determined to stand on her own two feet, Eva becomes an accomplished photographer, suffragette and a young woman who speaks her mind. When the three cousins encounter a grisly murder (see book 1), they also meet two of London’s highly regarded Detective Inspectors. Nathaniel Winston has been intrigued by Eva when they first meet and she ends up taking a crime scene photos on the aforementioned grisly murder….something unheard of for a genteel Victorian lady.
While Eva and Nathan’s journey begins in book 1, it is the focus of book 2. Nathan’s mother wants him to join her and his 4 sisters at their annual , ten day summer house party for charity. Of course, she’s invited some eligible young ladies in the hope that Nathan will finally marry. In desperation to stave off any marriage-minded ladies, Nathan blurts out that he’s already formed an interest in Eva….of course his mother immediately invites her to be a house party guest and photographer for the festivities. Now, Nathan only has to convince Eva that they act smitten with each other to keep up the façade….or is it truly a only pretend? Intrigue, murder and stolen kisses make the house party fun, dangerous and life altering.

This was a great story to read. I loved the storyline and the characters, definitely recommend this book!
An utter delight from start to finish.
The friends to lovers and fake dating tropes are two of my favorites and author Nancy Allen Campbell combines them with panache. Eva and Nathan know each other through Amelie and Michael (THE MATCHMAKER’S LONELY HEART). Their feelings for each other have grown, but both are afraid of ruining their friendship. That is until Nathan’s mother wants him to attend a house party with eligible ladies. He says his interest is already taken and then he and Eva have to pretend; which isn’t too hard for either of them. Add a criminal who wants revenge on Nathan and you have one interesting house party.
The romance is sweet but very satisfying. Lots of delicious kisses (poor Eva is irritable if not kissed). Eva is a photographer and self-supporting; Victorian feminism is always wonderful. Nathan chooses to be a police detective rather than use his family’s money. The mystery is just sinister and twisty enough to keep it interesting without making the story dark.
It is a thoroughly delightful book that you’ll want to read again.
This story is set in Victorian England in 1866. Eva Caldwell is a young woman with a most unusual occupation for the time - she is a photographer who also photographs crime scenes for the police. In this book, she is asked a favor by a friend, a detective: he would like her to attend and photograph his mother's annual weeklong house party - and also pretend that they are attracted to each other. His mother is determined to marry him off and he is equally determined to avoid her matchmaking. Of course, there isn't need for pretense on either side. I really enjoyed the slow development of their romance and the fact that they were middle class rather than nobility.
There is an unexpected complication - one of Nathan's enemies is determined to do him harm. If you are a fan of slow burn romance, mystery, and Victorian England settings, then you will enjoy this book. This is book 2 of a series, and I was able to follow this one although I had not read book 1 - although I intend to.
Thanks to the publisher Shadow Mountain and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. It was my pleasure to read and review this book.

To Capture His Heart | Nancy Campbell Allen
Genre: Historical Fiction, Mystery, Romance
Publisher: Shadow Mountain Publishing
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you Shadow Mountain Publishing and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
To Capture His Heart is where Agatha Christie and Bridgeton collide. Seriously. I loved it.
This book is the second of Nancy’s series “Matchmakers” and you can read as a stand alone or after you have read the first one, “The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart”. I, personally, read it as a stand alone, however, am eager to read the first book as well.
As soon as I saw the cover art of this book, I HAD to read it!
Nancy Campbell Allen has written a nice, easy read with great chapter flow and the sprinkle of suspense you are accustomed to in a classic whodunnit; an addictive page turner. If only I could endure a mid-week all-nighter, but early morning starts had me like🤦🏼♀️
The bonus to this novel is the underlining romantic story between main characters Detective Nathaniel Winston and charming photographer Eva Caldwell, traditionally told as it would occur within the societal customs in the Victoria era. Stealing glances, hushed whispers and the proverbial catch ups in the various closets and pantries. Love those slow burn vibes.
Nancy Campbell won bonus points for me when the “ton” was mentioned in this book, the Edgar Allen Poe references and the strong and empowering secondary characters, especially the Winston sisters.
A great read and am looking forward to reading previous and hopefully 🤞🏼, upcoming instalments of the “Matchmakers” series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which is a well written blend of mystery and romance. The main characters are well drawn with an enjoyable cast of supporting characters.
Another suspenseful mystery/romance in this series. This story probably leaned more to the romance side. I liked these two characters together. They worked well as a team to solve the mystery and I loved the way they looked out for Sammy too.
Personally my favorite part of this story was the interactions between Eva and the mean girls. There is nothing I enjoy more, I think, than a really good, well deserved set down. I'm a little vindictive in my reading choices. I love when women, particularly, stand up to the bully. I loved that Eva was such an independent woman and didn't wait around to be saved by her man.
I also enjoyed that Nathan was a good and caring person for those in and out of his family.
This was an enjoyable read for clean mystery/romance lovers.
Sex: no, some kisses
Language: no
Violence: yes, not graphic
*I received a complimentary ARC through NetGalley and voluntarily chose to review it.
I didn't realize as I chose this book that I had already read the one that comes before it. I was happy as I recognized some of the characters and engaged with the story. It's got a bit of the crime/detective spin to it, but is mostly a solid and enjoyable romance.
I enjoyed this story. I appreciated that I couldn’t guess the villian’s identity and I liked that there were no big misunderstandings between the main characters and that the hero declared his feelings and intentions clearly. I loved Sammy as well as Nathan’s mother and sisters and (continued to love) Eva’s cousins. A series comprised of chronological events with the characters from the previous books making appearances is my favorite way to read a series.
I did think the surprise at the end would have been a new dark room, but… 🤷🏻♀️
This was a fun and engaging book. I thought the balance between the love story and the mystery was well done. It is common for one storyline to overpower the other in these types of books, especially in clean romances, but that was not the case here.
I wish Eva’s cousins and Aunt Sally had been in more of the story, but I get that this was a house party away from London, so their absence makes sense. On the other hand, it was great to see more of Sammy and I loved Nathan’s sisters and mother.
NOTE: Until reading this book, I never really appreciated how dangerous photography was back in the day. They were literally playing with explosives!
I simply adored To Capture His Heart. I adore historical fiction and photography. This crossed both. Eva Cadwell was such a strong woman that I loved how Eva and Nathan interacted with each other. I couldn't put this book down. Definitely one I will be rereading.
I loved this book! Eva is smart, capable, kind and beautiful inside and out. She loves working as a photographer, especially when she is able to work with Detective Nathan Winston. When Det. Winston approaches her about photographing his Mother's house party and pretending a tendre for him, she can't refuse. Eva might find it hard not to give away her true feelings of love for the detective. She doesn't know that he is having the same difficulties. Enter in a madman from Nathan's past and this could be the most interesting house party yet.
I would highly recommend this book.
To Capture His Heart is a very sweet, romantic, and charming book set in late nineteenth century England. It follows Eva, a photographer, and Nathan, a detective, as they navigate their feelings for each other while also investigating a criminal plot. I enjoyed both the blooming romance and the intrigue in this book and felt that they played well off one another. Finishing this book has me wanting to dip back into my Austen collection again right away!
I received an advance copy of To Capture His Heart from NetGalley and then realized it's #2 in a series. So, I read #1 (The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart) first, and I definitely recommend doing it that way to fully appreciate the whole story. This series is the perfect blend of historical romance + mystery/crime drama, with many loveable characters. I hope there will be more books in this series!
In Allen’s follow-up to The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart, we catch up with Amelie’s cousin, Evangeline who seems to have an infatuation with Detective Nathan Winston (who also happens to be the investigating partner of her cousin’s husband). When Nathan’s mother mentions the need for a photographer at her annual fundraiser at their country manor, Nathan volunteers Eva and also mentions that they are courting in order to prevent his mother from inviting eligible young ladies to the ten day event. Hand delivering an invite to Eva, he mentions the plan to act as a courting couple. Eva jumps at the chance to not only take photos, but to spend time with Nathan and attempt to not give away her feelings for Nathan. Nathan himself is worried that his true feelings for Eva might be revealed and wonders what torture he has opened himself up to.
Shortly before the event begins, Nathan has a previous criminal case he worked come back to relevance when the main suspect shows clues that he is near Nathan. Increasing undercover security for the event to watch his family and guests, Nathan is now also alert to finding the suspect before something dire happens. Knowing the suspect has likely changed his appearance, Nathan tries to enjoy his time with Eva while also trying to keep his family safe. Is the suspect among the guests? Is a guest a henchman for the suspect? Will Nathan be able to find where the suspect is before someone gets hurt or even worse, dies?
This book was enjoyable and an easy read. Romance, intrigue, mystery that isn’t graphic in nature. Strong female characters are the core of this series by Allen. If you are looking for a romantic mystery, this is the story for you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First half of this book: an average house party. Second half: AGATHA CHRISTIE.
This book was SO GOOD. Throughout the book you know who the villain is. And you know they're nearby, constantly taunting the two main characters. But as hard as I tried to figure it out, I had no idea where there were.
I was absolutely incapable of trusting any member of the house party, servant, or nearby neighbor. A few times I thought I knew who the villain was, but then they died. Of course.
It really was like an Agatha Christie novel. I could trust no one and people I thought was important kept dying.
"To Capture His Heart" is the story of Detective Nathaniel Winston and photographer Eva Caldwell attending a house party together... While pretending they're courting, of course. Because Nathan clearly needs someone to help dissuade all the desperate debutants from trying to win him over.
On top of that, a criminal mastermind who blames Nathaniel for the death of his family is lurking in the background, leaving calling cards and threatening everyone Nathaniel cares about.
This book is the sequel to "The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart", though you can read "To Capture His Heart" without spoiling the first one. My hold for the first book didn't come through until about a week after I finished the second book.
Definitely worth adding to your to-be-read lists!

Evangeline (Eva) Caldwell, is a photographer, who lives in the time during the women's suffrage movement. When Nathaniel Winston,, persuades his mot'her, to hire Eva as a photographer, for his mother's ten day houseparty. Nathan,, has had, his eye on Eva for a long time. Nathan is hoping that Eva, will cause a distraction, for his mother''so he can continue to ,focus on a case, he is in the middle of, as a detective. I loved this book, even though it is a sequel, it can be read as a stand-alone. What a great book.
Eva is an accomplished photographer who has been enlisted on many instances to help the constabulary in crime scenes. When detective Nathan Winston's mother decides to have a week-long social gathering, she invites Eva to photograph the events, knowing her son might have feelings for Eva. The only condition- they must pretend they are courting, to avoid all the single ladies harassing him all week. But then a criminal from the detective's past decides to crash the party, everything changes.
This was a fun read. I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue. I enjoyed the characters and the story. Clean and enjoyable read. I always enjoy Ms. Allen's stories!
Thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was given an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is a classic historical romance, with a twist a suspenseful side story that takes over the spotlight in this mystery/suspense. It made for an extra entertaining plot line which I enjoyed very much. The main character, Eva, was a very strong intelligent female. Her job, which was unusual for females at the time was to assist Nathanby taking crime scene photographs. She too family portraits of the wealthy that were among her aunt Sally’s circle of friends. and her business grew by mouth of the satisfied customers. Nathan by way of his mother invited Eva to the family social event of the summer she invited ladies and gentlemen of marrying age to her house for ten days of mingling by playing games and dancing. Eva would be required to take pictures st certain events. Nathan didn’t tell anyone but he was actively working on an ongoing case. He did eventually tell Eva but she had pretty wellfigured it out by the way he was acting. He had requested her attendance as a way to pretend they were already in a relationship to detract any interested ladies and to keep his family off his back this covers the first half of the book. The mystery and suspense becomes front and center in the book to finish it out. What a nice change to the regular romance. This definitely puts it in a league of it’s own. ASpecial thanks to #NetGalley, #BlueMountainPublishing, #NancyCampbellAllen, #ToCaptureHisHeart. I thought the title should have beenTo Capture Her heart because we see it more from his point of view a puppy dog chasing the one he loves but he never felt it before so he doesn’t know how to tell her and not be rejected. I thought the book was exactly what I was looking for and didn’t know it. Yes I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who likes a quick to read slow-burning romance.
I loved Eva spunk and independent spirit. Nathan’s mother and sisters were also great characters. I wouldn’t mind reading a book where one of his sisters were the main characters. Nathan was well written. You sympathized with his struggles and cheered him on to find his nemesis. Overall a great book from start to finish.
I loved the first book a lot but probably liked this one even more. Maybe. 😝 It was fantastic all around! The characters were all well-developed and the storyline was unlike any I have read before.
The romance between Nathaniel and Eva ... sublime! He was SO sweet to her and you could tell he was so enamored with her, from the beginning.
The thrill/suspense part of the book was also well-thought out and written. No spoilers, but I wasn't anticipating who was behind all the mysterious things that happened at the house.
I'm really looking forward to the next one in this series... it is truly one of my favorites!
Thank you Netgalley and Shadow Mountain for the ARC. I read the first book and really enjoyed it and recommend it. The timeframe covers when woman in the workplace and new technology is advancing. The story is a natural second book as, Eva and Nathan, from the previous book are building a relationship. The romance makes up the majority of the book with the mystery being secondary. Great description of photography used at the time. I would have enjoyed the mystery being more fleshed out. Good secondary characters and a nice epilogue. I rate the book a 3.5 and round up.
I loved this book! I didnt realize Nancy was going to make this a series but am so glad she did. I love the crime stories and its not too much to make me feel ill. It was great to follow Evas story.
I loved this book just as much as I loved the first one. I loved everything about it. The characters and the very fun plot was a page-turner. Sammy is a favorite and I was happy he was in the book. But the character that stole the show for me was Christine Winton, Nathan's mother. She was so fun. Oh, as well as Nathan's sisters. The plot is engaging with some mystery and scene stealing romance too. I read this book so fast, but I also didn't want it to end. So well done.
Overall I enjoyed this read. Though personally I liked the 1st one more. If you enjoy Sarah Eden and the like you'll enjoy this for sure. It was a sweet story. I thought the H (Nathaniel) and h (Evangeline) were wonderful. I even loved the H's family. If ever there's a spin off series for the sisters I'd read that. I thought there was good story development and the mystery was interesting. I especially found working in the photography was also pretty interesting. This had the makings of a good story and romance. Good pacing, editing, characters and chemistry. I am definitly going to read the next one. My only caveat to the enjoyment was just a few times the difference between men and woman during those times came off more like a sermon than adding historical tidbits.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of To Capture His Heart. I found this novel to be a nice, little reprieve from reality. Set in 1886, England, this novel is the second in a series. Nathan and Eva have know each other for some time and circumstances bring them together for a social retreat at Nathan’s family home. The premise of this story is a simple one, Nathan asks Eva to attend this retreat so that he may avoid the eager socialites vying for his attention. Of course things become more complicated since Nathan secretly pines for Eva. During the course of this story, disturbing events occur and a villain (from book 1) is the suspect. Throw in high society, ‘mean girls’, a historical setting and To Capture His Heart provides a nice, unoffending read.
A strong three star rating only because I felt as though I were missing much of the back story, having not read book 1. Previous events were briefly explained and interspersed throughout this novel almost as an aside and didn’t help to provide much character development or further the plot to any great extent. It was almost as if this author were saying “ Oh yah reader, you should know about this thing that happened in book one” which resulted in flat characters and a villain who wasn’t really villainous. I did enjoy the brief and chaste romantic tension between Eva and Nathan, and perhaps that should have been explored to a greater extent along with the social machinations of the time.
To Capture is Heart is the second installment of progressive photographer Evangeline (Eva) Caldwell and hunky detective Nathaniel (Nathan) Winston. Although this is the second and I’ve not read the first in the series, it was easy to fall into the story of these characters!
The romance portion of this story wasn’t doing it for me, but the mystery was compelling. The connection between Detective Winston’s family and Eva was pleasing to read and see develop during the extended house party in balance to the mean girls was charming.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read and for my reading ratings this makes it a 3-star story.
I'm a huge fan of this series and loved this book! Nathan and Eva were so sweet and balanced each other perfectly. The mystery of trying to find Nathan's enemy kept me on the edge of my seat and had me reading way past my bedtime.
Mrs. Winston, widowed when her children were still young, took over running the family's business, and established a habit of hosting charity benefits in the form of week-long entertainments at their seaside holiday house every year.
Her son (and eldest, the others all girls), had chosen a career to leisure, and was a successful police Detective with CID. Being a clever woman, and hoping to bring together her grown children with possible "matches," this year's wealthy donor invitees were mostly single ladies and gentlemen of marriageable ages. Her only difficulty was to get her busy detective son to attend.
Nathan Winston agreed to attend, yet was tired of dodging overeager young ladies, so he quickly "invented" an existing interest in the very pretty Eva Caldwell, whom he had been admiring for some time (she helped the police by photographing crime scenes). He didn't want to admit his blunder. So he asked her to attend as his guest (where they could pretend a mutual interest), and she, as it turned out, could also work part time for his mother by taking photographs of the festivities. A win for all three!
As fortune often arranges things, the long-term plans of many individuals came together in unplanned-for ways. Schemes were foiled and rearranged, hopes were dashed and others lifted, and the two "pretenders" began to wonder whether the other felt as they did.
If this was not excitement enough, a criminal from Nathan's past wanted revenge, and arranged chilling surprises for everyone. The party began as parties do, but death was walking the seaside estate and grounds; listening at doors, and peeking into windows. Worst of all, no one knew what Bernard Toole looked like. He could be posing as almost anyone!
This was a fun (clean) Victorian era romance mystery. I enjoyed the silver nitrate photography details, and it's always nice to read a clever mystery and entertaining story that is wholesome and entirely without swearing! Very refreshing!

As someone who read the first novel in this series, "The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart," I was excited to receive this copy from NetGalley and dive in.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Nathan and Eva, as well as the inclusion of past characters in the series. The supporting characters were also a fun element, especially the Winston sisters. And while I didn't like how convenient some pieces of the mystery plot fell into place, I still didn't guess how it would end.
4/5 stars, just because I think it may be hard to follow for those who haven't read the first in the series.
I was given a copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I loved the first book in this series, The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart, and was happy to see that Eva Caldwell and Detective Nathan Winston had their own story. There were many things I enjoyed about this story:
Eva’s compassion to have an orphan as an apprentice
The house party and all of the fun activities
The mystery and suspense
The fake romance that was actually there all along
The Winston sisters
Eva’s entrepreneurship and confidence
This can be read as a standalone, but I recommend you read the first book because it was an outstanding story and several characters are in this book.
I was given a copy of this book through NetGalley. I was not expected to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The premise of this book was a little unique for a book in the Victorian era. It had light flavors of love and adventure and mystery. The female character was strong and determined and very independent. (And really, who doesn't love a strong, independent female character?!)
Eva and Nathan end up working together, but as they work together other feelings develop as well.
Overall, a very fun and entertaining read!
This book was so good! I read it super quick and then waited too long to write my review, so it won't be as detailed as I'd like.
But, this book was very engaging. I expected a murder mystery like the last one, but this wasn't quite that. Still, I would buy it and put it on my favorites shelf. I did think the threat resolved very quickly, which felt a tad unrealistic. However, the rest of the book was a very very good read.
Nancy Campbell Allen does it again! I couldn't put this one down! I loved Nathan and Eva's story! It had the perfect balance of mystery, intrigue, and sweet romance! Can't wait to see what comes next in this series!
*note- series should be read in order
I received an ARC through Netgalley and all opinions are my own.
This was... fine. Besides the fact that I was entirely mistaken on this being set in Edwardian England (it's Victorian, why ever would I think otherwise), I found the research done on the time period a little superficial compared to other writers of similar genres. The romance is cute, but not breathtaking - the mystery falls into the mellow, cozy crime spectrum. I don't think I'll continue reading the series, but if you're looking for a light romantic read with minimal heat, "To Capture His Heart" would be a nice choice for a book to take to the beach!
Synopsis:
Seaside, England, 1886
Review:
I've loved Nancy Campbell Allen's previous book in this series and I was so excited to read Eva and Nathan's story.
Eva and Nathan are such a good match in this book. He's an inspector and she's very curious about everything. This was such a good mystery, and in parts I wished there was a little more setup for Nathan's concern. I love seeing him interact with his family and their relationships.
Eva is a great character. She's well throught out and she has motivations and inspirations beyond jsut being a women who is interesting. She intelligent and kind and I loved seeing her in a new environment.
The premise for this plot was interesting and had a good pace that didn't feel rushed or like it was lagging behind. I did find Nathan's protests at the beginning about not wanting a partner dumb since the first thing he does after that is tell his mom he likes Eva and then continues to perpetuate that ruse.
Overall, this was a delightful read and it was such a fun jump back into this world. I like this as the second book in the series but I really believe it could be read as a stand alone book if you missed the first one.
Nancy Campbell Allen's 'To Capture His Heart' is a perfect combination of history, mystery and romance. The characters are delightful, and I especially appreciated the lack of artifice displayed by Nathan. Learning about photography in Victorian times was fascinating, and I was impressed with Eva's temperament and expertise. the suspense was deftly created through Nathan's profession. All in all I highly recommend this book for a wonderfully entertaining read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I'm a huge Nancy Campbell Allen fan and really enjoyed the first book in this series. I was thrilled to hear that Amelie's cousins were getting their own stories and this one was just what I needed.
I love Eva and Nathan together in this book! Their chemistry is amazing and I love that their relationship has been built on a year of friendship and a professional working relationship.
Eva agrees to help Nathan avoid the husband-hunting women at his mother's house party, but both of them quickly realize that they'll never be able to go back to the way things were before. Meanwhile, a criminal from Nathan's past has decided to come and torment the detective who put the rest of his family in jail, and the clock is ticking before he makes his move.
The mystery adds such a great element to this story and the romance is perfect. Make sure you check this one out when it releases in the fall!
I liked the first in the Matchmaker series, and I’m sure I’ll read the third whenever it gets written, but this one was only O.K. Reading it does kind of make me want to reread the first one, which I may very well do.
I liked the leads and that cute little waif Sammy, and the romance was sweet enough. I think Allen must have done some research on old timey photography for this, which was cool.
One thing I like about this author is you don’t have to wait until the last chapter for the characters to realize they love each other. I like being able to see them happy together for longer than a second.
I usually don’t think the villains in Allen’s books are that great, and this was no exception. I found all the mysterious packages and near-misses to be rather silly. I guessed who the baddie was, but that’s probably due to the blatant clues repeated multiple times by Nathan.
I also didn’t love the one-note mean girl characters. With Eva’s past, I see why they were introduced, but I really hate seeing competitive, nasty, female bullies in plots.
It definitely didn’t put me off Allen or this particular series, and people who liked the first will want to read it. I hope at some point she writes more in the Steampunk Proper Romance series.
This book is an assortment of genres: historical fiction, fantasy, suspense & mystery.
It's my first novel from the writer & I actually relished it. This variety had me engaged at every climacteric & I kept longing for more. I appreciated how the female personalities are demonstrated as liberated & willing to oppose the world to proclaim their own profession.
Nancy's story-telling is indeed impressive. She knew just when to present the flings & when to provoke the reader's apprehension. Also, the account is from both the central characters' POVs, though not established explicitly, which brings it up a notch.
Thanks, NetGalley, author & publisher, for supplying me with an e-ARC. I'm leaving this review willingly in exchange for the complimentary book.
Nancy Campbell Allen has been a favorite of mine for years!! And there is a good reason for that. All of her books are so good, full of twists and turns, and leaves you feeling all the feels. To Capture His Heart is no exception. I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading late into the night.
I love the amount of research you can tell went into this book! This book has it all--mystery, adventure, romance, and more. The characters were endearing. Eva's independence was wonderful, and Sammy proved to be an adorable helper. I liked the pacing, including the slow burn when it came to the romance. I will definitely continue to make my way through Nancy Campbell Allen's books!
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved many of the same things about this book as I did The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart. A strong, but feminine, female lead and a morally upright, hard-working male lead. I loved the setting of a house party. If I had one quibble, this one took a little longer to get the mystery going than the prior book. I had a hard time really suspecting anyone! But I did enjoy this sweet couple, the good writing and realistic dialogue. I appreciate that though the women have independent means, they still understand the joy to be found in a loving marriage and partner that supports and encourages you (rather than throwing men under the bus). Overall a sweet read and I look forward to hopefully hearing Charlotte’s story next!
Nathan Winston is a detective with Scotland Yard. Evangeline Caldwell was introduced to him at a crime scene. He and his partner, Michael Baker, ask her to take crime scene pictures when they need her. She lives with her cousins, actually one now. Her other cousin got married. She loves what she does and has an excellent reputation. She has taken in a homeless orphan, and he is so sweet. He is her assistant.
Nathan's mother has an annual house party that lasts for ten days. She solicits donations for what charity she is supporting. She wants Nathan there, but he does not want to be accosted. He says that he has a lady he is interested in. So, she finds out Eva takes photos and asks him to see if she would accept the job.
Nathan and Eva were wonderful. She looked at him and saw a tall, handsome, blonde hair man
with tawny eyes. He was kind and good. She had no trouble watching him, he was that attractive to her. The story was fun and flowed so well. It was a great read. I must read the first one and then wait for the third. I very much enjoyed her book and look forward to more.
I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.
'The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart' was one of my favourite reads from last year, so I was so excited when I saw there was going to be another story in the same universe. I loved the story between Eva and Nathan, they were truly both so sweet for each other. The mystery plot line in this book kept me guessing and the final culminating scene had me turning the pages fast. There was a mention of the last cousin still being unmarried in the last chapter.... fingers crossed for another return to this lovely group of characters.
Eva and Nathan are afraid to admit their love for one another. To help him be free of marriage minded ladies, Nathan asks Eva to be his pretend fiancee at a week fund raising party sponsored by his mother. But there is a sinister element that Nathan and Eva must confront before they can admit their true feelings for one another.
I love another book from Nancy Campbell Allen! To Capture His Heart was another great book. I really wanted to give all my free time to finishing this book once I got into it.
Eva and Nathan are great together I enjoyed their interaction together it was genuine and real. I liked that there was a mystery to solve I truly didn't figure it out as quickly as I normally. do. Read this and I recommend reading The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart as well.
A fun, romantic romp through a Victorian house part, where sinister events keep getting in the way of a detective's attempts at courtship. The language is slightly stilted, and the book isn't clear at first on how well the lead's understand their own feelings, which is confusing, but once we get past that and they're committed, it's a charming love story. Eva and Nathan are great characters, and whether they're flirting or investigating a murder (or doing both *cough*the cave*cough*), their chemistry is apparent. I especially like how firmly their relationship is based on mutual respect and friendship, and when Eva finally decided she was ready to pursue something deeper, I cheered! Their friends and family are equally delightful, and I'm excited to read more in the series.
My thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another fantastic story by the great Nancy Campbell Allen. Seriously! Everything she writes has been so fun and a definite must read!
Many thanks to Netgalley and publisher for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Really like the premise and the characters in here. I like historical fiction and the romance in here is so sweet. I enjoyed reading this so much and looking forward for more. With the mystery and fast paced plot, i was invested in this
This is the second book in the matchmakers series, but you don't need to read the first one for this one to make sense.
This was a great historical romance with a bit of a mystery. I did not guess who "Toole" was, and I liked that it wasn't super predictable. I also liked the characters, but did wish they had more interactions with each other. Overall I really liked it and recommend to fans of historical romance!
Summary: Eva Caldwell is an independent photographer that doesn't need a husband, she has her assistant Sammy to help with her photography and her cousins for the company however she doesn’t mind assisting Detective Nathan Winston by occasionally photographing his crime scene. Nathan’s mother, however, is tired of having a single son and is hosting a party of singles for 10 days to lore a wife for Nathan and potentially husbands for his sisters however Nathan has no desire for a wife and to evade his mother's matchmaking Nathan tells her that he is interested and pursuing Eva Caldwell. Which resulting in his mother hiring and inviting Eva to the 10 day gathering to which Eva agrees. However Nathan mother isn’t the only one with plans for Nathan, a criminal that has evade Nathan’s capture is now threatening him and his loved one only time will tell if he can keep them safe.
Thoughts: This was super cute! I love that instead of hurting the investigation Eva is a member of the criminal investigation.Eva and Nathan’s relationship is very cute i like how patience and understanding her is while still having a fun and teasing realtionship with him. I also like Nathan’s relationship with his mother, sister and Eva’s cousins and his own partner. It was a fun story and kind of a fun play on an Agatha Christie Mystery with the party and the ghost. I should have read the first book though she does give you ample background so you undertstand all the dynamics. i am going to go back and read the first book though because this was a super run read and i am now super curious to see extactly how the first book played out. I also really liked the dynamics of all the characters and how they communicated with each other they listen to what each said when something weird or strange happened. I really liked Nathan’s relationship with Sammy and that both he and Eva listen to him. Overall it was a cute little romcom with a little bit of dective work thrown in that was a fun easy read.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for this eARC! My opinions are all my own and are honest.
This is a terrific sequel in the Matchmakers series by Nancy Campbell Allen, but can also definitely be read as a stand alone if you haven’t read the first one.
Things I LOVED:
- The relationship between the two main characters. There is a beautiful romance there, but like all great romances, it begins as a beautiful friendship. Eva is a strong, witty Lizzie Bennet-esque character, whilst Nathan is the tall dark and handsome, sweet, caring male lead. The detective and the photographer…match made in heaven!
- The mystery. Whilst this is definitely a historical romance novel, it is first and foremost a detective/crime novel, and it will have you questioning ‘whodunnit’ until the final reveal!
- The writing style. Allen manages to keep the charm of history whilst also making it appealing to a present day reader.
Things to think about:
- I’m not 100% sure about what era this is set in. It’s post regency, post electric light and post the establishment of Scotland Yard, which leads me to think it’s Victorian, but I don’t believe it’s actually explicitly stated.
- Some side characters I feel should have had more of a look-in…but this is me really nit-picking.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book and would happily recommend it to anyone and everyone!
Beautiful and compelling romantic mystery. Adventures galore and love everlasting. Nancy has created a masterpiece with this book which runs hand in hand with it's predicessor The Matchmakers Lonely Heart. I was captivated by the couple and their growing love for each other. Evans skills in photography were the perfect tool for her interactions with Scotland Yard a CID. An enemy from Nathan's past brings tragedy and triumph for our hero and his heroine in this beautiful work.
It was fun to return to these characters. I had particularly wanted to find out more about Detective Winston and was therefore happy for this opportunity.
I enjoyed this story more than the 1st one. The villain was not overly stressful for me and the fun of the couple getting to know each other more was a pleasant little journey. There was an
unexpected twist re the tea ☠
Photographer, Evangeline Caldwell (Eva) & her assistant, ten-year-old Sammy White are forefronts and we learn many details about their business as it applies back then.
Nathan's sisters— two sets of twins— added another fun layer.
Favorite quote:
"He was, she realized, stealthy. He was launching a slow assault on her senses, breaking down her reserve, and trying to pull from her the things she was too afraid to admit. He would be patient, and dogged, just as he was in every aspect of his life. He was a determined man, and he did not quit. Her heart beat a steady thrum in her chest, and the last of the whistled tune faded away." -Ch.13
Side note: I find it particularly annoying when authors use names with the same beginning initial.
e.g. "J"
-the butler, Jansen,
-Davis Jacobson
-Jens Sorenson
-Nathaniel Joshua Winston
- Mrs. James Winston
Overall it can get confusing when you have no face to associate the name with.
I do look forward to book 3 and recommend reading book 1 & 2.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Shadow Mtn Press for an eVersion provided for review purposes only without expectation or compensation.

This second book in the Matchmakers series was exactly what I'd hoped it would be...and then some! All of the things I enjoyed about the first book were improved in this one, making it a story that I savored and looked forward to picking up again. The romance was swoon-worthy but also plausible in its development. The mystery was truly a mystery; I did not expect the villain, yet in retrospect, the identity made sense. Great tension and suspense throughout! I just love the characters in this series, even the secondary ones. I particularly like the heroine portrayed as intelligent and mature, without being obstinate or petulant, and the hero admiring her for more than just her appearance. A thoroughly enjoyable Victorian-era, romantic murder-mystery!
I was so excited when I got an email from @shadowmountainpub saying they sent me this newest sequel to a favorite book of mine from last year. I was so excited to read it and reunite with beloved characters.
This novel follows Eva and Detective Nathan Winston’s love unfolding. Nathan convinces Eva to join him at his family’s vacation house for 10 days of adventure as the official photography.
I loved the writing, the banter, and the plot. Things are always amiss and there might even be a murder or two.
This one comes out on October 12th so go ahead and preorder or request it at your library! If you loved the first one, I know you’ll love the second equally!
Thanks to @netgalley @shadowmountainpub @authornancycampbellallen for letting me read this in advance!
I loved this so much! Nathan and Eva were some of my favorite side characters from the first book so I was very excited to read their story. It didn’t disappoint! There’s not a single thing I didn’t love. Now I’ll be anxiously waiting for Charlotte’s story.
To Capture His Heart? More like to capture MY heart!
After reading The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart, I knew I wanted more in this world Nancy created. I got my wish, and I have a feeling we will get more as well. Eva and Nathan are a delight. I love the pleas Nathan gives Eva over and over again and how she just laughs and shakes her head. I did miss Eva's cousins and Detective Baker, but I did love getting to meet Nathan's family, especially his sisters. I would love to see stories for them as well, especially Grace.
I read anytime I can get; audiobooks during the day, kindle by night mostly. This was a kindle read for me and because of that it took me longer to get to the end. I had to force myself to stop every so often so I wouldn't be freaked out. There were some seriously suspicious and kind of creepy moments that, when read at night, when my whole family is a sleep and the lights are off, it can get to you. So I had to put it down or risk bad dreams. But nothing was truly terrifying. It was more a mental game that is brought on by our protagonist that got me some nights.
I highly suggest this book. It was full of great characters, a wonderful storyline that kept you on your toes, some seriously swoony kisses, and writing that kept you wanting more with every turn of the page. Nancy Campbell Allen is a master at this era and genre. Historical, romance, suspense and mystery. It is filled with so much amazing story telling that draws you in and keeps you captive until the very end.
Okay SO good! I enjoyed the first book, but I’m obsessed with this one! I love Eva and Nathan! He is so sweet and their banter is my favorite. The mystery amidst the house party and their pretended affection that wasn’t really pretend, just so good! I loved it!
Also, can I just say. I love that the kissing happens sooner than like 90% in with Nancy Campbell Allen’s books.
*I received an ARC from NetGalley and all opinions are my own*
Nancy Campbell Allen does it again! She delivered another fantastic romance that is engaging and entertaining from start to finish. From the opening lines of the story her voice captured the essence of these characters and transported the reader to an enchanting world of romance and mystery. I loved getting to see Eva at work with her photography business and see her loyal assistant Sammy. Nathan’s world was an unexpected one that was such a delightful insight into who he was. I loved getting to know his family throughout the course of the story and seeing how he takes care of those who are important to him. His kind and protective nature is evident in the way that he interacts with those around him at work and also the way he cares for his family.
Read this if you enjoy:
🎩 Friends to lovers
🎩 Fake dating
🎩 House parties
🎩 Mystery and intrigue
I loved the camaraderie between Eva and Nathan, how they knew each other so well from working together over the past year. In addition to noticing how beautiful Eva was, you definitely sensed that Nathan appreciated her for her intelligence and for her observation skills. He admired the way that she made a name for herself and pave the way for her own career despite being one of the few women to do so. Beyond seeing the appeal of Nathan‘s exterior appearance, Eva admired Nathan’s caring and protective nature as he looks out for those he loves.
The two of them find themselves at a house party and agree early on pretend to have an entendre for one another in order to prevent unwanted advances from the women in attendance. What unfolds from this house party is not only delightfully entertaining and an enjoyable romance, but a series of secrets and mysteries the unfolds into an exciting and gripping conclusion full of dangerous secrets.
Many thanks to Nancy Campbell Allen, Shadow Mountain, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the story. All opinions are my own. I can’t wait to see what Charlotte’s story has in store next!
This was another great historical romance from Nancy Campbell Allen. We're first introduced to Eva and Nathan in 'The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart', and I instantly knew I wanted them to get their own story. They're such a great pair. I'm happy to say that 'To Capture His Heart' lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed it so much!
This book features everything I love in a historical romance: wonderful characters who are easy to root for, a setting that comes alive, historical accuracy, a swoony and sweet romance, a good amount of humor, and a little bit of a mystery to add to the excitement.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good Victorian romance. I didn't want it to end.
I received an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
This was a fun second installment to the series. The writing was lovely as always with this author. Eva and Nathan are quite the modern Victorian era couple and I love how I feel transported to this time period and I didn't realize how dangerous photography could be back then! The romance was not as exciting this time around, but overall it was a pleasant read.
"He smiled and winked, and Eva wondered how she would possibly survive ten days of the man's attention and emerge unhurt on the other side."
If there is one thing I love to see in any and every romance I read, it's winking. I love it and I find it especially delightful in historical books which can often feel so proper, a little flirtacious wink is a nice touch 😉
This is the first book I read by Nancy Campbell Allen and I really enjoyed it. I definitely want to read more of her books.
This story had the perfect amount of mystery and it wasn't predictable. I tried, but I could not figure it all out and I preferred it that way. I don't mind predictability when it comes to knowing that the girl and the guy are going to get together (I have to have my HEA), but having aspects of the story that I can't figure out are fun!
Eva and Nathan were fantastic characters and I loved their interactions. I am a big fan of the fake dating trope and I really enjoyed seeing it in this time period. It was easy to read as it had great flow.
I loved the secondary characters, especially Sammy.
This is the second book in a series (I have not read the first yet, but I will!) but can easily be read as a stand-alone.
Eva Caldwell is a working woman. She's independent, educated and makes a living as a photographer. She's been able to help her detective friends on a few cases with her skills. When one of the detectives, Nathan, finds himself in need of rescue during his mother's house party, and the onslaught of eligible females, he tells his mother his heart is already engaged, unfortunately for him, it's truer than he lets on. Eva is invited to the house party as the photographer and when Nathan's nemesis from the past comes back, she's there to help him figure it out.
Eva's history doesn't allow her to trust easily, even though she wants to. The house party brings back unwanted memories of how she's been judged and dismissed in the past. We watch her wrestle with who she is and develop the confidence in the person she wants to be.
Written for general market it's a sweet, clean, suspenseful story.
*Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC and for the opportunity to post an honest review.
Eva and Nathan are already drawn to each other. Neither is aware of the feelings of the other but they have spent enough time with each other to recognize their own. When Nathan’s mother insinuates that matchmaking will be a part of her upcoming house party Nathan blurts that his attentions are already set on someone. Luckily Eva agrees to the charade and now they just need to get through a week under his mother’s scrutiny not to mention the rest of the guests”.
Loved loved loved the heat already surrounding Eva and Nathan. For a sweet and chaste courtship they still bring the sizzle with their longing and affection.. I adored the setup and watching Eva who is such a strong and accomplished business woman also face insecurities as she charms Nathan’s family and traverses the social quagmire of those assembled. Their story was lovely. The mystery the two also face seemed unnecessary when the rest of the story was so well done. It was underdeveloped and took me away from what I truly cared about.
Eagerly looking forward to book three in the series. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
During the summer 1886, Eva Caldwell finds herself employed as photographer for a 10-day fundraising party, hosted by Detective Inspector Nathaniel Winston's mother at the Winston family estate in Seaside. Nathaniel and Eva agree to act enamored with one another to help Nathaniel stave off a few marriage-hungry harpies that have been invited to the party. As the party rolls on, two things become apparent: their affection for one another may not just be a show, and someone on the premises has murderous intentions. Eva and Nathaniel must have the courage to share their true feelings for one another and outwit the villain before he claims his victims.
This is a cute companion story to Nancy Campbell Allen's other book, The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart. I enjoyed the appearance of a few familiar characters throughout the course of this story.
The romance was very sweet and founded upon mutual respect (always very refreshing!), and I thought the element of suspense gave it a nice flair. I have to admit though, that the mystery was not as puzzling nor adrenaline-inducing as I had expected, based on my experience reading The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart. This book is definitely a little more tame. I did think that the plot and characters were both believable though and I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the noble intentions of the good characters. These characters are the kind that do the right things for the right reasons, and I'd have to say that's one of my favorite things about Allen's books--the good guys are just really good, inside and out.
Content Guide:
Sex & Affection--Ardent kissing.
Language--None
Drugs, Alcohol, & Substance Use--None
Violence & Crime--Two men are found dead, one with bodily injury but descriptions can hardly be considered graphic. A few people are injured and injuries are not described graphically, save for one character noting the spreading of blood on another character's clothing.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.
4.5* This book had a wonderful combination of characters (in all their variety and uniqueness), a whodunnit element, and historical details about photography processes in the Victorian age to delight readers. I enjoyed seeing ties to characters from The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart, but I feel like this story can stand alone. Nancy Campbell Allen has crafted a clever story that you will want to see through to the end for both the mystery and the romance!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
This Victorian sequel doesn't disappoint. Eva Caldwell and Nathan Winston are perfectly matched in this masterful mystery. The suspense and mystery elements really add to the overall book and gives purpose to our detective and photographer. There are definitely elements true to the time period including women with independent incomes and women's rights.
The story was definitely set up in the previous book in the series but this one does stand on it's own. This one really kept me guessing where the mystery was concerned. I had feelings about the truth but didn't catch it all which was very clever of the author.
The characters were well developed and I loved them. This was truly a joy to read.
I received an early copy through the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest review.
I love Nancy Campbell Allen's work, and I thoroughly enjoyed this latest installment of the Matchmakers. Like most of Allen's lead females, Eva is grounded and complex enough to be relatable and likable. Nathan, likewise, is a very likable character although not quite as deeply developed as Eva. The chemistry exists from the outset and the tension lies in Eva's previous disappointments, resulting in several barriers she has constructed and is consciously but cautiously trying to dismantle. Eva's vulnerability to the 'mean girls' of society makes her character more sympathic, and the steel she develops in standing her ground is enjoyable to see.
The relationship between Eva and Nathan drives the novel, and the mystery is secondary and a bit dry. The danger aspect becomes a bit repetitive. Had the secondary characters been developed more, the mystery could have been a fun one for readers to untangle. As it stands, the mystery essentially provides a faint background for the interplay between Eva and Nathan.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain for the ARC.
To Capture His Heart was a delightful romp which combines historical romance and a big of thriller. With a professional photographer and a police detective, it is a perfect match for both romance and crime detection.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I found the criminal foreshadowing perhaps a bit too strong to enjoy the opening party scenes but that is what you sign up for in this topic of romantic suspense.
The characters of Eva and Nathan are perfectly matched, they have been in each other's social circle a little while, but this book develops their relationship beautifully. They have a deep respect for each other's expertise and a simmering physical attraction.
I'm a huge fan of the society house party setting in books and this one was beautiful scene setting throughout the book.
I really enjoyed this book, and felt that it was a well written historical fiction! It takes place during the time when women were becoming more accepted in the work field and Eva is a photographer who occasionally helps out Detective Winston at murder scenes. He invites her to his family’s house party to play the charade of being interested in him. Although they both are already interested in one another.
It is a fun romance, mixed with a little mystery as Eva and Nathan grow closer together and start to better understand how they feel for one another. There are some fun background characters as well. This is a great light read!
I haven’t read the first book, so this story can stand alone without the context of the first book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for sending me the digital ARC of this book!
After loving The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart, I was very excited to read To Capture His Heart! Eva was one of my favorite characters from the first book, and I loved seeing her romance develop with Nathan in this book.
The romantic tension is very well written; neither character wants to fall in love, but Eva agrees to pretend to be courted by Nathan at a house party. I enjoy fake dating storylines, and it was fun to see that play out in this book! The different activities for the house party sounded fun, and made for an enjoyable reading experience!
Eva is a photographer, who also has experience shooting crime scene photos, and Nathan is a detective. The suspense aspect to the story was intriguing! It was also great to learn more about photography in 1886. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
4/5 stars
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had been looking forward to reading this book ever since I finished Amelie’s story, The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart. I loved it! I loved the mystery and intrigue and romance. And I did not expect the ending, which is the mark of a really good mystery. I was reading this at night, and there were several times I had to stop because the mystery was creeping me out too much! I already can’t wait for Charlotte’s story!
Oh my goodness this was such a delight to read! All the stars from me. Historical mystery and suspense with enough romance, and the plot twist choking!
Strong independent Female Photographer Entrepreneur
The Fake Romance that was actually there all along
A sweet hero that protects those he cares for
The chemestry and banter
Mystery Subplot with a twist
Mean girls and charming sisters
Samy Eva’s photographer assistant
I like there was no misunderstanding between the two…they were always a team and have each other’s back.
This book is fast-paced and engaging with characters that will touch your heart, the writing style was simple and effective and the overall flow of the story felt very smooth. I loved the backdrop of a house party and the storyline, and I enjoyed the satisfying ending, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a romance with a side of mystery. It can be read as a stand-alone. Sweet-Clean-Closed-door romance. A fun entertaining read, Highly Recommend it!
Thanks, #NetGalley and #ShadowMountainPublishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I admit - this book doesn't exactly meet my expectation when I read the blurb and requested it from Netgalley. The blurb mentions that the female main character's occupation involves "documenting crime scenes" - and the male main character is a detective. It also mentions "the two work together to solve the mystery and apprehend the criminal". I expected a historical mystery/thriller.
What I get was, well, sweet romance (it does said PROPER romance, which basically clean, no sex scenes) with a touch of thriller. Yes, there's a criminal that sends sort of threat to Detective Nathan Winston, but dead bodies don't appear until around 80% of the book, and the rest of the story is more about Nathan and Eva and how they navigate their feelings while - at first - pretending that they're a couple of Nathan's mother's sake.
On one hand, I like the romance enough. Both characters are VERY likable.
Eva hides her vulnerability - she may be an accomplished photographer, but in her school days, Eva is bullied by the ladies above her station. She also still nurtured a broken heart when her first love left her; so Eva doesn't trust men easily.
Nathan has been on the way of falling in love with Eva for months, though (on that note I probably have to read the FIRST book of this series because that's when Nathan and Eva first met). Nathan is the kind of gentleman I like to read in romance. He appreciates and respect Eva, he doesn't belittle her just because she's a woman. He may feel a bit jealous at times when another man try to capture Eva's interest, but he doesn't act all primitively Alpha about it.
I enjoy their the progress of the relationship.
BUT STILL, I start this book imagining suspense in addition to the romance, and I feel kind of let down because of it. Yeah, expectation, it does things to you!
I like the author's writing style though. Maybe I will go back to the first book and then look forward to the third book (which I'm sure will feature the other cousin left, Charlotte). And next time, I will adjust what my expectation.
The ARC is provided by the publisher via Netgalley for an exchange of fair and honest review. No high rating is required for any ARC received.
Nathan and Eva are the perfect match. They both actually think the same thing but it takes a little time for them to progress in their relationship. And I loved reading the journey! This book is the perfect blend of suspense-but not too much/too stressful-and romance-sweet and appropriate. I highly recommend this incredible novel by Nancy Campbell Allen. She hints at Amelie and Michael’s love story from the first book in the series and now I’m wondering why I haven’t read it! Five stars, Nancy. Well done!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I adore Victorian proper romances. To Capture His Heart is so much fun because it has all the tension involved with wanting to kiss the love interest, internal struggles, and attraction in addition to a mystery.
Eva agrees to Nathan's request to attend his mother's ten-day party and pretend to have a romantic interest in him. A fake romance? Yes—I'm diving in and loving it because this book adds new twists to the trope. I love how Eva and Nathan's careers (a photographer and detective) overlap. They know each other on a deeper level than dancing at a ball or flirting in a large group of vain and vapid people. Eva is wonderful because she's vulnerable and self-assured, confident, and independent. Nathan's character works well because he is layered in unexpected ways to Eva. And his sisters are down-to-earth, and in need of their own romance stories.
Now for the mystery. Nathan has enemies from his work as a detective, and a particularly nasty fellow has invaded his London room with a sign that Nathan's family is not safe. A major problem is that Nathan doesn't know precisely what this enemy looks like. Though Nathan tries to keep the danger a secret, he hires extra guards, and Eva knows something is wrong. When a madman is after you, there's never enough protection. I loved how I guessed some of the pieces and not others.
This is the perfect blend of highlighting the romance with the mystery as a secondary plot.
If you love historical romances, Victorian England, cozy mysteries, or kissing books, this is the right read for you. I highly recommend this book!
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 🌶️1/5 (not much spice)
Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for giving me this ARC, and this does not influence my review. Disclaimer: slight spoilers ahead
This was a great read, the author’s writing style was great and the book had great world-building. The book was a 3rd person limited double-POV (which I personally hate🥲). The plot was great and included a feminist working FMC in the regency era??? So cool ngl! Included with the romance theme was a mystery which I adored, and I couldn’t figure out the events even though there was some foreshadowing.
Moving on to the romance😏😏 the MMC was very bold which was kind of hot?? He was kind of swoon-worthy and mischievous. <spoiler>I mean, mans told her he was going to kiss her👀👀 and the FMC got triggered waiting for it (she thought: “The anticipation is driving me mad. What is he waiting for? An engraved invitation?” </spoiler> I loved the scheming MIL and sisters of the guy, really made the book worth it.
Tropes included in this book include: friends to lovers, fake relationship, historical/regency romance, medium-fast burn romance
"Seaside, England, 1886.
Eva Caldwell is an accomplished and well-known photographer who often works with the local constabulary to assist in documenting crime scenes, which means she also often works alongside the handsome and charming detective, Nathan Winston. She appreciates his intellect and how he treats her like an equal, but Eva's heart is still healing from a past relationship, so, for now, she decides to keep her feelings for Nathan a secret.
One evening, Nathan arrives on her doorstep asking for a personal favor. Would Eva be available to photograph his mother's legendary, week-long dinner party and matchmaking event? The catch is that Eva would also have to pretend they are courting in order for Nathan to avoid the many single women seeking his attention.
Though wary of the charade, Eva agrees. Spending a week with the two things she loves most - her detective and her camera - sounds simple enough. And if she wants to imagine that Nathan's pretend courtship of her is real, well, what's the harm in that?
But when a criminal from Nathan's past threatens revenge on the detective, Nathan must be extra vigilant to keep his mother and the rest of the partygoers safe. He confides in Eva, and as the two work together to solve the mystery and apprehend the criminal, they find that they might capture more than they expected - each other's heart."
Bridgerton meets Miss Scarlet and the Duke!
4.5 stars
The romance just got me.
I don't care what anyone says. Nancy can write romance.
I just finished this delightful book and let me tell you, I needed a swoony romance and Nancy delivered.
To Capture His Heart is the next book in Nancy's matchmaker series, this time following Detective Nathaniel Winston and the lovely photographer, Miss Eva Caldwell. In an unusual turn of events, Eva finds herself attending a house party pretending to be enamored with the Detective himself, all the while both fighting their growing feelings for each other. And of course it wouldn't be a house party without a mystery to solve and a criminal to find.
Great historical romance with a suspenseful story. Loved the history and photography details! To me, the mystery seemed more on the side compared to the growing affections between the main MCs. But I was here for ALL the romance!
My friends, Nancy can write swoon. I loved every single encounter with Eva and Nathan and that their love story was already a "love in progress" from the beginning. Nathan is a dream. He wears his heart on his sleeve for that lady. Flirty banter, tender moments, and sweet touches. Give me more!
I would say my only issue is the mystery piece. Some things didn't quite add up toward the end. I needed more details to get the suspense vibe. Otherwise it was delightful!
This book comes out October 12th! Thank you to the author and Shadow Mountain for my early copy!
“Perfectly normal, just another day at a house party where anyone might be guilty of crimes large or small.”
The definition of an “easy read”, this mystery peppered with romance is light and sweet.
If you’re looking for a fast, fun mystery, this is the one for you. It’s not overly complex even though it does deal with some deeper themes.
Our main characters (Eva and Nathan) are so adorable. The way he talks openly and frankly with her and perceives her feelings is truly refreshing. He’s a great detective and he starts to use those resources in their relationship, which is a cool detail. Also, I love a jealous hero, but I love even more that Nathan knows he shouldn’t be jealous no matter what, saying, “He was not used to the sudden surge of possessiveness that he knew could not be healthy.” I couldn’t wait for them to end up together.
The side characters range from truly evil to so charming. Sammy especially was a favorite of mine, and I enjoyed how Eva and Nathan’s relationship with him also grew. Nathan’s mom and sisters are fun to read. Maybe some of them will get books in the future?
The writing is good but clunky at times. Sometimes she uses big words and I’m not sure she completely knows the definitions. I don’t mean this in a mean way, it’s just a tiny bit off. The mystery was fun and yet a little bit obvious. I absolutely loved all the historical details about things like photography.
Overall this is a nice book that I absolutely recommend!
Tropes: Friends to lovers, fake dating,
CW: Kidnapping, murder, violence, toxic personalities
I received an eARC of this book via NetGalley. Opinions are all my own.
So I absolutely loved the first book in the Matchmakers Series, but this one has just become my favorite one! Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed Eva’s happily ever after. I read this story so quickly because I loved the relationship between Eva and Nathan. I love how Nancy writes these strong female entrepreneurs in these historical settings!
Eva works with Nathan as a photographer for the police department. They have become close friends since meeting through Eva’s cousin. Nathan being the great son he visits his mom who informs him of her week long matchmaking event, Nathan already having feelings for another tells his mom he is courting a photographer, Eva. Him and Eva have to pretend they are courting each other for the week.
I absolutely love the development of Eva and Nathan’s relationship. But I also love Nathan's family, his mom and his sisters are the absolute best! The mystery within this one kept me guessing and I did not know who had done it!
If you want a story which is cute, angsty, a mystery and a romance, this book is for you! Nancy Campbell Allen, I loved this story!
Thank you Netgalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you Nancy Campbell Allen for writing an amazing story!
This was an engaging romance with nail biting action and adventure!
Spoiler alerts:
This book is part of a series, but I haven't read one yet that didn't meet the expectancy of the first. The heroine is a trio of "modern women" cousins who share a boarding house with a few older inhabitants and work in trade to keep a roof over their house. They are career women who are fighting for women's right to vote. The heroine is a photographer, who is called on by the police when their photographer is busy. One of her cousins is married to a police detective and that is her connection with the police department. His partner is the hero of this tale. He is attracted to the heroine, but has not let on yet. His work is all.consuming as is hers. But they keep stealing looks at each other. The hero was involved with a criminal family who had one member escape from justice. The villain's sister recently passed away after catching a disease in prison. The villian has begun sending the hero raven's feathers in a box of cigars decorated like a circus, because that is how they disguised their criminal business. The hero thinks that the villian will try to harm his mother and four sisters. His mother is having an annual charity house party and inviting single partners for his sisters - and him! The hero is not happy and implies that he is interested in the photographer and his mother is happy because she needs to hire a photographer at her party and asks to invite her. The hero explains to the heroine about the invitation, but both parties are sad because they with have to pretend a relationship between them even though they really like each other.
I enjoyed this story so much! I kept reading it with out putting it down because in addition to being very well written, the story just draws the reader in. The historical description of how things were at that time, the descriptions of the settings and landmarks and the characters themselves were so well described. The story just went along, dragging the reader with it, from start to finish. It was hard to put the book down. I like the fact that there were no dangling story lines or ideas and that there was realistic action, and not inconceivable stories or actions. It was all believable. I give this book 5 stars and recommend for your keeper shelf.
This was a fun romance whodunit - I enjoyed getting to know Nathan & Eva better after meeting them in the first book, and I was not disappointed in their story. They had excellent chemistry, witty banter, and some steamy kisses.
The whodunit part of the story was very intriguing, and I admit I did not know who the perpetrator was in the end. It was a good mystery that ended well.
As mentioned above this is the 2nd in a series, but it stands very well on its own. I recommend this book who likes their romance on the less spicy side, with a dash of mystery.
To Capture His Heart was a very enjoyable read. It perfectly mixed romance with mystery. I did not want to put it down. This book is a perfect follow up to The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart and I hope to read Charlotte's story in the future. I also greatly enjoyed learning a little bit about how pictures were taken in the late 1800's. I love that the title really is a double meaning since Eva Caldwell, the main character, is a photographer.
Eva is invited to a house party as a guest and photographer by Detective Nathan Winston. The house party has it all- mean girls, mystery boxes, murder, and more. Will Nathan and Eva solve the mystery before more people are hurt? Read to find out!

This second book in the Matchmaker series would be fine as a standalone. The books feature three independent female cousins and their romantic/mystery escapades.
Eve is an independent woman, a professional photographer, who keeps her heart under lock and key after a bad fiance jilts her. But she is hard pressed to deny her attraction to detective Nathaniel Winston.
They met in the first series book, and are thrown together again when Nathaniel's partner marries Eve's cousin. Then Nathaniel tries to outsmart his mother's matchmaking efforts by telling her he is pursuing Eve (which isn't yet true) and finds himself in a bind when his mother invites Eve to her days long charity fundraiser as a photographer. He is forced to tell Eve the whole story and they dance around their mutual attraction.
But Nathaniel is worried because of the appearance of an old nemesis who is clearly stalking his mother's party and targeting guests. Is he putting his loved ones in danger? It doesn't help that Eve is fearless and throws herself into the investigation.
Great characters and particularly strong female cast. Thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
An intriguing Victorian historical mystery romance!
Eva Caldwell is a photographer who occasionally works alongside the local constabulary. She’s accompanied by her sidekick, ten year old Sammy. Nathan Winston is a detective who works with her cousin Amelie Hampton Baker’s husband, Michael Baker.
There is an attraction between Eva and Nathan but neither is willing to admit to it. But now Nathan‘s mother is holding her annual week long house summer fundraiser at their family villa, Seaside.
Nathan asks Eva to attend firstly as a photographer, and secondly as a cover for him to hide behind from his matchmaking mother.
Add to this an escaped criminal from a previous case, Bernard Toole, who’s out to get Nathan’s family as payback for Toole’s sister dying from an infection caught in prison is stalking them. Already Nathan has had a black raven’s feather delivered in a cigar box. Toole wants vengeance and his targets are Nathan’s mother and sisters. The annual house party is ideal for Toole’s dark purposes.
A game of cat and mouse ensues that is both twisted and elusive. The game of love is afoot and Eva will have choices to make.
A very readable story. The attraction between Nathan and Eva is charged and delightful. A clean romance with the tension of all that is happening thrumming underneath. Eva will be called upon to show courage and open her heart.
A Shadow Mountain ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.
A proper Victorian (1886) romance with a light mystery. Eva Caldwell is a well known photographer and has worked with local detectives documenting crimes scenes as a side to her other work. Detective Nathan Winston’s mother wants to hire Eva to photograph a ten day party she is hosting for people of marriageable age. She’d like to see her son married as well as her four daughters. Nathan imposes on their friendship by asking that she pretend they are courting so he may be left alone by other women at the gathering. Of course with their fondness for each other the lines is easily blurred.
The mystery involves a previous case the Detective worked. One family member escaped and vows revenge. When mishaps start happening at the party Nathan’s detective side demands he investigate and keep everyone safe. Eva of course can’t help but become involved. I enjoyed Eva and Nathan’s story. I liked learning about photography in the time period and its opportunity for a women to have work not tied to a factory or domestic service.
This is the second in a series and there is at least one more of the friend/cousin group who I assume will be featured in the next book. Eva and Nathan are part of the first book but either story can be read alone. I like Allen’s writing style and the easy but proper conversations between the MCs. I will look forward to what the author writes next. Because it is clean I recommend it for any age group who enjoys romance. Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
The second in the delightful Matchmaker series, To Capture His Heart is as witty, charming and engaging as the first. The author's writing style flows beautifully with 1886 historical bits and vernacular and that special something which makes my heart smile. This is a special series indeed.
Cousin Eva chooses to forge her own path in a world where women are largely ignored and those exhibiting intelligence are perceived as a threat. She pursues her passion of photography, including unladylike crime scene photography, which is fascinatingly described. Her sometimes partner in crime is detective Nathan Winston who thinks the world of her. Nathan's mother who is known for her exquisite long parties finds she needs a photographer for her next fundraising event. Eva is hired, much to the delight and chagrin to Nathan as his mother is a matchmaker extraordinaire. Nathan expresses interest in a certain someone to his mother to prevent her from using her particular set of skills. Eva and Nathan decide to fake a romantic relationship and both wish deep down it was true. I love the contrivance of any slight thing to place them into close proximity, the stolen looks, pink cheeks and utmost mutual respect. Other hopefuls gaze at them with adoration, too, but their eyes are for each other. Someone from Nathan's past interrupts and mayhem ensues. The mystery is twisty and turny but as with the first book life isn't always as perfect as it sounds which is realistic. But the romance, though!
Other than Eva and Nathan my other favourite characters are young Sammy and Nathan's independent spirited mother. The cover is indicative of what to expect inside and the ending is as marvellous as the beginning. I couldn't wait to get to the ending yet didn't want the story to be finished.
If you are even the tiniest bit interested in historical fiction, romance and mystery, this series should be on your list. I am not typically a romance fan but this series is different...the banter is refreshing and the blushes sweet, not vulgar.
My sincere thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for introducing me to this enthralling escapist series. I look forward to the next and have already imagined a few plots in my own mind!
"I will hold you and keep you safe and love you with everything that I have and am."
I loved this story. There were so many lovely moments, and the characters were delightfully real to me. The emotion and depth that Nancy Campbell Allen weaves into her stories and writing will pull you in and keep you riveted until the end.
Eva and Nathan were so incredibly sweet together, and I was rooting for them from page one. I absolutely adored how Nathan treated Eva, and the tension and attraction between the two was deliciously fun. Their banter was entertaining, and I was constantly looking forward to the moments where they would be on the page together.
I especially enjoyed Eva and the look we got into the past as we learned about her photography and how everything worked with all of her equipment. Also, Sammy was hysterical, and he added such a fun energy to the book.
I did feel that the ending was a little rushed and that the villain could have been built up throughout the story a little more. Everything seemed a little too neat. I wanted to see more of the villain and his influences/ get to know him better.
Overall, this was a fun historical romance with a mystery/suspense subplot. I loved the writing, the setting, and the characters, and I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you to the publisher for the complimentary eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I just love this author and the light touch she has, yet her stories just pull me right in. These characters are so endearing! Eva's sophisticated yet practical nature complements Nathan's sharp intellect and protective instincts. The house party makes a fun setting. I love Nathan's sisters. They all need their own stories too. There is intrigue and suspense. Eva's 12-year-old assistant is the perfect complement to this group of friends. I absolutely love the colors on the book cover too. I can't wait for this series to continue!
A fun mystery from Nancy Campbell Allen! To Capture His Heart will delight readers with romance, intrigue, and appearances by many well-loved characters. I will admit that the romance moved a bit too quickly at times, but I adored both Eva and Nathan. I’m definitely excited for Charlotte’s story. 4/5 stars
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I have been anxiously awaiting this book since I read the first book in the series, The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart. That was my first book by this author and wondered if I’d be as enthralled with the second book as I was with the first. Well – I was. The finely honed mystery and beautiful romance are so finely twined together that you cannot tell where one begins and the other ends. The writing is outstanding; the villain is a murky and twisted individual; the characters are exceptional and you’d love to meet them in real life; there is excitement galore; and did I mention the writing is exceptional?
We met both Eva Caldwell and Detective Inspector Nathaniel Winston in the previous book and since I liked both characters, I was happy to find them together in this book. It seems the two of them have worked together several times since the previous book and they have become good friends. Well – friends – yes – but – it seems each of them harbors stronger feelings, but neither wants to let them be known because they don’t want to mess up the friendship. Oh! My!
Nathaniel has just finished a grueling case when his mother lets him know, in no uncertain terms, that he is expected to attend a 10-day house party she is giving to raise money for charities. He offers excuse after excuse, but she’s having none of it. He knows this party is a way of encouraging him to finally make a match, so he tells her he is already interested in someone else. His mother, being the brilliant tactician she is, promptly calls his bluff and says she’ll invite his lady straightaway. Though he tried not to name a name, she insisted. So, now, he has to convince Eva to attend the house party and pretend they have affection for each other. How will he stand it if she agrees – and how will he make it through 10 days of matchmaking if she doesn’t agree?
Eva Caldwell loves her life. She has people she loves and who love her and she is a very successful photographer who manages to support herself very nicely. She even helps out her friend Nathaniel on occasion by acting as a crime scene photographer when the police unit isn’t available. Ah – Nathaniel – her heart warms when she thinks of him, but she doesn’t want to ruin their friendship by asking for more from it. Yet, when he asks her to attend his mother’s house party as a guest and photographer, she readily accepts.
At the same time his mother’s machinations are occurring, Nathaniel is receiving threats – pretty blatant threats – against his family. He knows immediately who they are from – the lone person to escape punishment from one of his previous cases. The man’s entire family went to prison, but the mastermind escaped. Maybe Nathaniel and his family getting out of town is a good thing.
There is snakes-in-the grass at every turn during the house party and it is a delight to watch Nathaniel and Ava wade through them. With murders, attempted murders, explosions, and deceit happening at a fast pace, Nathaniel and Ava hardly have any time together – yet they manage to find their HEA.
It is a fun, exciting read and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Happy Reading!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A great blend of romance and suspense. I found myself rooting for the mystery to be solved just as much as them finding their HEA. Which for me, a diehard romance fan, is a pretty big deal.
She once again nailed the Agatha Christie vibe, giving away little to no clues about the mystery and of course, the romance was delightful. Highly recommend this one!
Will she let her fears and past hurt hold her back when love comes knocking at her door …
My first read by the author was a steampunk story, which I loved, so reading a more classical historical romance was at first surprising but as much enjoyable.
Nathaniel and Evangeline were introduced in the previous book as the main couple’s relative or colleague. Since they have danced around one another without really taking a step further as Eva, even after years have passed, is still relying from a broken heart to keep people, more specifically men at arm-length.
Yet, when Nathan finds himself under his determined mother’s matchmaking attack, Eva is the first name that comes to him mind to halt his parent’s assault on his bachelorhood.
Thus they find themselves embarked in a false courtship both do not wish to be much counterfeit.
Eva is attracted by Nathan’s easy and kind persona, but she fears going forward might damage their friendship, why she holds back. It is not aided that as a miss working for a livelihood, she is often pinpointed as unsuitable, if not also for her too famous family’s name.
The investigation is secondary to the romance, yet it adds an edge to the story, demonstrating how in tune they both are. Their exchanges and bantering are amusing and lovely as their feelings are revealed.
Nathan is so sweet, caught between his mother’s scheme and his own heart’s desire, he soon realizes it is the perfect opportunity to see if he can win his lady’s love, why he is straightforward with her once the party is ongoing. Up to her to accept his suit.
The author delivers a charming, fun, engaging and witty tale with an edge of danger of a man set on winning his lady’s heart while she opens herself to the possibility that not all men are cads.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 kisses
I have been granted an advance copy by the publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
This is the second book in the Matchmakers series, and it’s almost as good as the first. It was a bit of a slow start for me, but I still really enjoyed it. I love the cousins, and the dashing detectives aren’t bad either. And, of course, Sammy! This is great, clean read, and I cannot wait for Charlotte’s story!
This fake relationship story was a little different than others as they both already liked each other, but struggled to admit it. I love Eva and Nathan. They were great together. Eva is so strong and spunky. I loved how she stood up to others and was so strong and sure, even though she may have been trembling on the inside. I loved how well she and Nathan knew each other and helped each other. They had so many wonderful sweet moments together and several swoony ones as well. I enjoyed the mystery woven through the story. It pulled you right in.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Netgalley and this is my honest review.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Nancy Campbell Allen for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for To Capture His Heart coming out October 12, 2022. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Set in 1886, To Capture His Heart follows Eva Caldwell. She is a renown photographer in Seaside, England. She works with the local constabulary to assist in documenting crime scenes, which means she also often works alongside the devastatingly good-looking and good-natured detective, Nathaniel Winston. She admires his intellect and feels like an equal to him. But she’s still on guard from getting hurt in a past relationship. She hides her feelings for Nathan.
Nathan asks Eva for a personal favor. Would Eva be able to photograph his mother's week-long dinner party and matchmaking event? He also asks her if she would pretend they are courting in order for Nathan to avoid the many available women seeking his attention. Though wary of it, Eva agrees. She gets to spend a week with her favorite detective and her camera.
Soon after the party events begin, a criminal from Nathan's past threatens revenge. Nathan must be extra vigilant to keep his family and the rest of the guests safe. He confides in Eva and the two work to solve the case and apprehend the criminal. Can they catch the criminal in time? Can Eva heal by letting Nathan into her heart?
First of all, I have many books and have read many books by Nancy Campbell Allen and I love her writing!
Overall, I loved this book! Historical romance is one of my favorite genres. I loved Nathaniel’s character. He was honorable and just but also honest. I loved that he was kind but would also say how he really felt. He was a fun character. The romancing started a little quicker than I was expecting, but I really enjoyed that they had many long talks with each other and were able to build up that friendship. I really liked that Eva worked as a photographer. I’m not sure about the mean girls plot. It seemed like it wasn’t as explored why Eva was made fun of when she was younger and then again as an adult. I wasn’t as into that storyline, but I loved everything else.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys clean Victorian romances with a side of murder mystery!
What a fantastic addition to this series! A delicious historical thriller full of romance, a Victorian house party, and a scheming enemy bent on revenge -- no matter the costs!
When I read the first book in this series, "The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart," my favorite characters were Amelie's cousins. I was thrilled to get the story of one of those delightful cousins, Eva Caldwell. I would start with the first book in the series as that offers valuable background into Eva and Nathan's relationship and personalities.
Eva is a fantastic protagonist with depth and courage. I admired her dedication to her career as a photographer. But also her deep sense of compassion, love, and patience with those around her no matter their social standing. Her relationship with young Sammy White is particularly lovely as he assists her in her business and feels like a son rather than hired help. I admired the way she sees the good in people of every station from her maid to the women of the house. She has experienced heartache and deep regret in her life. I appreciated moments when we saw beyond her strong, patient exterior and saw her vulnerability and softness. Additionally, her sophisticated tongue and quick wit also made her a favorite of mine. As well as her beautiful romance with Nathan Winston.
A hard working, dedicated man in his own right, Nathan is a swoony and nearly flawless co-protagonist. I enjoyed getting to know him better and getting to know his family. He has a job he loves and is kind and respectful of everyone he interacts with including his mother and sisters. Can I make a request for a sister series focusing on each of Nathan's four sisters? They are delightful and engaging; I would love to know them better! Nathan protects his family with love and intensity that should be admired. I also loved watching him admit his true feelings for Eva and the way that love and intensity includes her as well.
Nathan is a lovely compliment to Eva as he protects her and respects her. They share many admirable qualities like patience, respect for others, kindness, and quick perception to the world around them. But he also grounds Eva in ways she craves. While she is wary of romance, he jumps in and shows he cares for her in his actions and words. His love has developed gradually but is now strong and immovable. He shows that love in a myriad of ways. I love their tender kisses. The declarations of love and support. The way he always finds her in a room regardless of where she is. The way he reads her features and calms her fears. Their tender moment at her bedside. And the epilogue (thank you for that!) I loved their beautiful romance that had the right blend of tension and sighs. Theirs a beautiful relationship!
The romance is part of an engaging, fast paced thriller plot. Nathan has a dangerous enemy from a past police case who is threatening the lives of all those Nathan loves. This murder mystery is dripping with tension and excitement. Slowly we piece together who is behind a series of unnerving events like broken camera equipment, mysterious gifts, and disappearing people. I was drawn into this mystery and couldn't read fast enough. Who was behind everything and how did they connect to Nathan's enemy? I don't read a lot of murder mysteries or thrillers, but this one had the right balance of fear and hope. As well as a good balance of graphic violence and resolution. The ending is surprising and satisfying while allowing hope to continue to shine through for my favorite characters.
Overall, an exciting murder mystery that combines romance with revenge at a delightful house party setting. I hope there will be more books about these characters!
This is a Victorian version of the pretend relationship that turns into a real love match. Throw in a mystery and you have an enjoyable read. I like that the heroine has a profession and she’s respected for doing it.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
This book was a fun read with intrigue, suspense, and love all mixed in to a delightful Victorian setting. It was a joy to read, and I can't wait to buy it so I can read it again and again.
Pretty much perfection. Definitely my favorite Nancy Campbell Allen to date. The rate of the romance unfolding, the character development, the rate of the mystery unfurling, the red-herrings, the amazing sisters - all delivered with perfect balance. And so many good kisses! Swoon!

To Capture His Heart is my new favorite Victorian mystery romance! I adore this series and couldn’t wait for Nathan and Eva’s story. With swoony romance, a great whodunit mystery, some dastardly suspects, an old Edgar Allan Poe lovin’ nemesis, a fake relationship, and an unforgettable house party, this mystery is one you don’t want to miss!
Though independently wealthy, Nathan Winston follows in the footsteps of his hero, Poe’s legendary detective. His mother though wants to find him a suitable match and begs him to attend her ten day house party. To please her, but escape her matchmaking, he tells her he already has a romantic attachment to Eva Caldwell, the photographer who occasionally takes crime photos for him. His mother promptly issues an invitation and asks if she will photograph the party.
Nathan secretly admires Eva and hopes convincing her to pretend to be his romantic interest might further his relationship with her. But, when an old nemesis leaves a creepy calling card with a black feather, Nathan worries how he will protect his loved ones from this new threat.
Eva is beautiful, talented, and always in control. She’s secretly been in love with Nathan since she met him, but a painful past relationship makes her extremely cautious. Posing as Nathan’s romantic interest allows her to admire him and be in his company for ten days. But, what happens when the party ends? Will she survive with her heart intact?
I loved this romantic mystery! Nathan & Eva have a fun relationship stemming from true friendship & admiration. Their slow burn romance is achingly lovely. I loved her tying his cravat, the maze scene, and hiding in the butler’s pantry.
The mystery definitely kept me guessing. There’re plenty of suspects, motivations, “mean girls” you love to hate, and an evil villain hiding in their midst. I have to admit I didn’t see the ending coming and was hurriedly turning the pages to find out what would happen next.
I also enjoyed getting to know Nathan’s sisters & mother. They are each so kind and supportive. I loved the way they befriend and rally around Eva. It was also fun to see Eva’s assistant Sammy again.
Highly recommend this amazing, romantic mystery! It can definitely be read as a standalone, but you’ll want to go back and read the amazing first book in the series! Can’t wait for Charlotte’s story. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
This was a really good follow up to The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart! You definitely don’t have to have read the previous book first, but it does give you a little more insight into the main characters of this book, Nathan and Eva. I really liked that Eva has photography as a profession and sometimes helps shoot crime scenes. Nathan is, of course, a detective. It was nice to see his family and how he interacts with them. I also loved Sammy, the orphan rescued from a circus who Eva basically adopts as her own and has help her with photography (she does pay him too which I thought was a nice thing to note!). This is similar to book one in that we know the “who done it” but we have to figure out the how. There is a fun twist that I appreciated.
I also really enjoyed watching Nathan and Eva’s relationship grow over the course of the story. I would definitely recommend this book to people who like historical mystery romances.
Fun and sweet with a little mystery, To Capture His Heart is a light-hearted historical romance. The world of Victorian England is lovingly portrayed, and the quirky cast of characters create a nice backdrop for the story. Eva and Nathaniel are a charming couple that are perfectly suited, despite their differences. Combined with a gentle thread of mystery, you have a novel many readers of historical fiction will delight in.

Detective Nathan Winston and Eva Caldwell attend his mother’s ten-day house party and feign an interest in each other. In between picnics, games, and falling in love they will stop a murderer bent on revenge.
It is always a pleasure to escape into a world created by Nancy Campbell Allen. Whether it is a proper romance set in Victorian London or steampunk fairy tale retellings, I will keep coming back for more.
Recommended for: historical fiction readers & fans of smut free romance

I received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
It was very interesting to find this book was quite different to the first book in the series, although I enjoyed both! The first book was definitely an historical mystery with a romance on the side. To Capture His Heart on the other hand is mostly historical romance with just a little mystery.
It is a very enjoyable romance, carrying forward one which began in the first book. Eva and Nathan attend a house party where for various reasons they are playing the part of a couple in love. As the days progress they find that they are no longer acting their roles. It is all very sweet with very little angst and there is nothing wrong with that. Of course there is a mystery too and it does culminate in danger and excitement.
This is a well written and entertaining story with good characters (Nathan in particular is very appealing), an interesting story and a great ending. I wonder where the author will take the series next.
Cozy mystery plus romance. This is book two in the series. Though there are a few references to things that happened in the first book and some of the characters are the same, it can be read alone.
I liked this book better than the first one because it has more romance and less violence. Nathan and Eva both like each other but think the other is only interested in friendship. He asks her if they can pretend to be interested in each other for his mother’s ten-day house party so he can avoid being set up with desperate single women. An extra bonus was learning a little about the old photography methods too.
Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy to use for my review.
I really liked To Capture His Heart, even more than the first in the Matchmakers series.
Eva Campbell is amazing as a photographer. I liked her in the first book and grew to love her in this book.
Nathan Winston is a good detective and the perfect match for Eva.
I love that a house party in the latter part of the 1800’s is the background for their love story.
The mystery of Bernard Toole and where he will pop up to get revenge brought a good sense of suspense to the story. I appreciate how the author wove that part of the story into place.
I knew from the start it was a bad idea to put the carriage containing Eva’s photography supplies next to house, and that’s all I’ll say about that.
The first book in the series definitely adds background to the whole story and propels this one forward, but I think a reader would be okay if they picked up To Capture His Heart as a stand-alone.
Thanks to Netgalley and Shadow Mountain for the early copy of this book.
Be still my heart, I loved this book! A perfect blend of romance and mystery…this book kept me on my toes to the very end. Here are a few quotes that I loved:
“My mother is a consummate hostess and entertainer. I do not trust her one whit.”
“Slowly, he reached for her, and she melted into him with a single sob that broke his heart.”
If you like fake romances, mystery, and a healthy dose of romance, this book is for you!
Content warning: A few crime scenes are tastefully described. I would allow an elementary schooler to read them.
I received an Advance Readers Copy from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This book should definitely be on your radar for non-spooky fall reads, it was such a great novel! Whereas the first book was heavy on the detective work and light of the romance, this book was heavy on the romance and light on the mystery.
The main characters were ADORABLE and I loved the lack of miscommunication in their relationship. The mystery was a great mystery for me, because I genuinely couldn’t guess the ending before it happened! I also really loved the elements involving photography and getting to learn more about the art during that era.
Read for a swoony romance along with a suspenseful storyline that will keep you up just to see how it ends! (Speaking from experience 😉)
Thank you to Netgalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for my complimentary copy, all thoughts are my own.
Title: To Capture His Heart
Author: Nancy Campbell Allen
Genre: Romance
Rating: 4 out of 5
Seaside, England, 1886
I liked that this wasn’t just a romance novel: there was the mystery of what was happening with the criminal from Nathan’s past. I absolutely adored Nathan’s four sisters and the family’s relationships, so that added another level of fun. Eva is unconventional, but not blatantly so, and Nathan is open-minded enough to appreciate her fully. This was a fun read.
Nancy Campbell Allen is an award-winning author. To Capture His Heart is her newest novel.
(Galley courtesy of Shadow Mountain Publishing in exchange for an honest review.)
I’m here for murder mysteries that have me swoony over romance than blood. I think Nancy Campbell Allen has the perfect touch of murder mystery meets romance and she delivers on both genres perfectly.
I loved that we get both POVs of our main characters. And I’m here for fake relationships, but especially when we can get away with a fake relationship during historical England.
This is a Victorian romance that has elements of detective, fake dating, guy falls first, whodunit, conniving characters, sweet stolen moments (hello kisses), and two working class heroes.
Oh how I loved this book. It just released and if audiobook is your thing, Justine Eyre is the narrator.
*this is book 2, but it stands alone perfectly. I don’t think you need to read the first to understand what is happening in this story. However! I equally loved the first, so go check that one out too.
I went in blind here and was surprised to see some familiar faces, because I didn't realize this was part of a series with her last novel, The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart. This is a true companion novel, though- we have a short appearance by our past couple, but for the most part this focuses on Evangeline and Nathaniel.
I loved the setting of this one- a house party on the shore with a dangerous criminal on the loose, not to mention four matchmaking sisters? Delightful. This wasn't really a slow burn, but it took some time to get to the point. Eva has some trust issues, but there was already an established attraction and friendship in book 1, so the romance doesn't suffer from the mystery plot points.
Overall, this was a fast and enjoyable read with more romance and humor than mystery. The end was wrapped up more quickly than I would have liked, but this book accomplished the goal of making me smile and keeping my attention.
Eva has been betrayed before and has no intention of opening her heart again. Unfortunately, her heart may have other ideas! When Detective Nathan Winston accidentally gets her invited to his mother's house party as a potential love interest, she goes along with it, despite the danger to her heart. But more than her heart is at stake: a criminal mastermind who escaped from Nathan earlier is on the warpath following the death of his sister in prison. Can they escape Toole's plans and avoid a fatal conclusion to the house party? And which will win: Eva's head, or her heart?
An enjoyable sweet romance with a side (or backdrop?) of mystery. With an entertaining host, a mysterious villain, a detective who's desperate to keep those he cares about safe, an independent young photographer who's yet to work out what she wants, and an amusing cast of fellow house-guests, not to mention young Sammy, this is a delightful character-driven story, and the mystery that hovers in the background from the start adds a great touch. If you're looking for a mystery that focuses on the mystery, this isn't it, but if you like a hint of mystery in your romance, this definitely delivers. I enjoyed watching Nathan and Eva coming to terms with their supposedly fake relationship and working out what they want it to be, and the mystery made for a great background. A good story - 4.5 stars.
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
I enjoyed the ideas of this book, but I felt like everything in it was too vague for me to be emotionally committed to the characters or storyline. I liked what the author was doing with this book and the style was very nice to read, but there were very little details included about anything — we don’t get specifics about Eva’s past relationship that went badly, there are no specifics given about the Toole case and how Nathan was involved in it, etc. — which was probably a decision made for brevity but it reduced the quality of the story. I am very much a character-driven reader, and because all that we learn is really general, I didn’t feel connected to Eva, Nathan, or even Sammy who felt like the most alive character in the book to me. All in all, this was a really cool idea that was poorly executed for me due to the excessive editing out of everything that makes characters and situations seem realistic and intriguing.
Wow! This book packed a punch! There's a dynamite plot--the mystery was quite interesting--and the romance was terrific. If this had been another book where the main characters take forever to figure out that they like each other, it would have been very tedious, so I love the fact that the charade didn't last very long. Although this is a clean romance, the chemistry was great, and I loved seeing Eva and Nathan together--they respected and supported each other and had some great banter. This was just pure fun to read.
5 stars.
I read an ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
To Capture His Heart is another incredible Victorian mystery-romance from Nancy Campbell Allen. This one is a sequel to The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart, but you can easily read it on its own since all of the references to book 1 don't impact the events of this one.
Eva and Nathan both have secretly admired each for basically the duration that they've know each other. Eva won't admit it since she's been burned by romance in the past and Nathan is a smart man who suspects she'd run away before she gave him a chance. But when his mother throws another one of her top-notch house parties with lots of single ladies, he panics and reveals his interest to his mother, who promptly hires Eva as her photographer. Throw in an escaped criminal with a vendetta against Nathan, and you quickly get a loaded party.
I loved seeing Eva and Nathan try to outmaneuver each other into admitting their feelings first. Both of them are very observant due to their occupations so once masks start slipping, everything's more or less in the open--as long as they can get the other person to crack first. 😆
Once Nathan fills Eva in on what's happening with his work, they play off each other very well--both in a romantic and a professional sense. As a reader, there were so many little moments where I nearly screamed because THERE'S A CLUE but because the other person doesn't know aaaallll the details, they miss them. And of course, several of those clues ended up being red herrings anyway. 🙈
I'll definitely be re-reading this over and over while I wait for book 3, which I really really hope is a romance between a certain cousin and director. But I suppose I'll have to wait and see.
To Capture his Heart is a fun clean romance by author Nancy Campbell Allen. It has everything you could want in a book: romance, suspense, great characters, and an amazing storyline.!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.l and am anxiously awaiting book 3 in this series.!
This clean romance had one of my favorite premises - a "pretend" romance that grows into a real one. (That isn't a spoiler if you've ever read a romance before!) The characters were all lovely and I sensed a real connection between the leads. The book also had a couple of scenes that usually go one way but the author turned it around and the characters acted very differently than the usual and I found it refreshing and fun. (It would be a spoiler to describe these, but I think I can say that the premise wasn't artificially dragged on for too long, and the leads were willing to believe the best of each other rather than the worst.) Love that.
What a fun and engaging story. Eva is an accomplished photographer, which is saying something in Victorian England. She’s on the cusp of women breaking traditional molds. Nathan is captivated by her and not put off by her forward thinking. In his attempt to thwart his mother’s matchmaking schemes, he identifies her as his love interest so his mother won’t portray him as the eligible bachelor at her house party. Eva is invited as the photographer and agrees to go along with Nathan’s plan. Knowing they both have true and genuine feelings for the other highlights all the mixed signals and messages. The tension is thick at times, knowing what’s going on behind the scenes while waiting for them to figure it out. The characters were well developed and the storyline itself is very creative. A thoroughly enjoyable book. I’m thrilled for more in the matchmaking series.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
Squeeee! Nancy Campbell Allen can do no wrong. Her books always hit the spot and leave me thinking about the story for days, if not weeks after! This book is a delight and did not disappoint!
Another fun, entertaining and suspenseful book from Nancy Campbell Allen. I love that Eva, the main female character, was a strong independent woman. She had a good back bone and a lot of sass. I enjoyed the fact that the author knew or had researched a lot about early photography and incorporated it in the story as Eva’s employment. Nathan was also an interesting character, the fact that he followed his passion for detective work, instead of relying on their family business was interesting. The story has a lot of twists and turns, a suspenseful plot and some great swoony romance. What else could you want. I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The main characters in this book did it for me. I loved there love! This is a proper romance novel that brings in mystery and love. Eva Caldwell is such a strong and relatable character. She works as a photographer in Seaside, England. She has worked alongside Nathan Winston a detective. She admires him from afar for his brain and teamwork. Eva is healing from a previous heart break still. When Nathan comes to her front door asking her a favor. He asks if she would photograph his mother's amazing week-long dinner party. The only thing is Eva would have to pretend Nathan and her are an item. How hard could it be to pretend to be involved with someone who you already have feelings for?
When a criminal form Nathan's past tries to bring revenge at the party. Nathan and Eva must work together to solve the mystery. As they work to solve who could be behind these new revenge plots will they also find love?

Are you ready for another great whodunnit Victorian style book? Nancy Campbell Allen delivered with this one. I loved the first book and was so happy to know that the author was continuing to write more books about the secondary characters that I loved from book one, The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart. Eva and Nathan kept my attention in the first book and I was really hoping we'd get to see more of them. And tah-dah!!! They got their very own book. And there are some cameos from the main characters of book one.
Nathan has a problem. Well, two, maybe three. Hahaha! Maybe even more than that, but I'll stick with three. 1-He loves Eva but can't work up the courage to tell her. 2-His mom is scheming by playing matchmaker with Nathan and inviting A LOT of eligible ladies to her huge annual fundraising house party. (And as you probably have guessed, Nathan is not too thrilled about it). 3-Nathan tells his mom he has someone he's interested in, garners an invitation for her and works up the courage to tell her what he told his mom (he's interested in her) but plays it off as being just an act because he's too scared to tell her the truth and what better way than to be around her for a couple weeks. Yep, he's smitten and in trouble with this scheme of his mother's and his!
But don't let his problems fool you. He's got everything well in hand. Minus the fact that there's someone from his past detective/police work case that is after him and wants revenge. That's just a minor thing. No need to fret Nathan. Or is there? Especially when all kinds of mysterious things start happening at the party. No need to panic. Keep calm and don't let anyone know and try to figure out who the bad guy is and how you're going to protect everyone, your heart and most importantly Eva.
Oh, this was such a delightful book! I loved having both Nathan and Eva's perspective throughout the book. These two characters are just so sweet and good. And their love story is just absolutely adorable!
So many fun historical aspects are included in the book as well. I really loved all the photography aspects. Wow! Such a great history of how photography started to what it is currently today. It was very fascinating reading about the process of it all through Eva's eyes as she was taking pictures throughout the house party.
Content: Clean. Some kisses and nothing further. Murder and mayhem. A sinister character. But nothing overly graphic. I'd share this with my teenagers happily! They'd love it!
I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Happy Reading!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart, but this book was even better! Eva Caldwell is a respected photographer. She's even helped the police take crime scene photos when they were in a bind. When Detective Nathan Winston asks for a favor, she expects it to be work related, but he asks her to come to his mother's house party and pretend he's courting her, to keep away any unwanted matchmaking attempts.
We all know what happens with this scheme! Eva and Nathan were adorable together. I loved the flirting and seeing the lines between friendship, pretending, and love all blur together.
I also loved the suspense in this story. Interwoven with the fake relationship plot is the head of a crime family with a grudge. After Nathan's undercover work imprisoned most of his family last year, Bernard Toole is playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Nathan and his guests. I was on the edge of my seat and didn't see the ending coming.
While part of a series, this book could easily be read independently. It's a good mystery for these chilly fall days, but let's be honest, you would enjoy it at any time of the year!
Content: clean (violence-not described in gory detail, kissing, no language)
Book review: To Capture His Heart by Nancy Campbell Allen
.
What an absolutely enjoyable book! I loved the first book in this series so I was stoked for this one. It definitely lived up to my expectations! I love Eva and Nathan together. I love a good fake courtship turned real. I also thought it was so sweet how upfront Nathan was with his feelings but never pressured Eva. He let her work through her own thoughts and feelings. I also enjoyed the added mystery and danger in the book. This was a real page turner!

I absolutely adored Eva in The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart (can be read as a stand-alone) and could not wait for her story; it did not disappoint!! She and Nathan are an absolute delight together!! Thank you, Mrs. Winston for being a meddling mama and forcing Nathan to come up with a fake courting scheme involving Eva and a ten day house party. This made for some forced proximity, delicious mutual pinning and “gives me all the butterflies” kisses!
Allen writes the best balance of mystery and romance. I love how Nathan and Eva worked together on the mystery elements in this story. You can’t help but adore how Nathan sees Eva for the capable, independent woman that she is. They were such a no-nonsense type of couple and I love how once they acknowledged their feelings, there was no turning back. Their stolen moments together were so sweet and swoony.
Other favorite parts of this book include Sammy! How can you not fall in love with this sweet boy?! I’m so glad he got his own happily ever after. I also loved the drama the Mean Ladies brought to the story and the satisfaction that come from Eva delivering the ultimate cut direct. To see her rise above her pain from the past and use it to propel her forward was the ultimate female win! Nathan’s sisters were so much fun to get to know and I hope we see more of them in the future.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain and NetGalley for an advanced copy. My thoughts are my own.
This is a Victorian romance. 2nd
in the series. A little romance, a little mystery. Such a good book for this time of year! I loved the first in the
series last year and I loved this one too!
I enjoyed most of the characters but Sammy has my heart!
This is an excellent Victorian murder mystery. Eva a photographer and Nathan a Detective try to solve a murder while falling in love.
I absolutely loved this story! It was the perfect October book- a murder mystery with enough thrilling moments to be exciting, but not scary. I loved the romance in the story. Nathan and Eva were perfectly matched, and I always love when the romance happens early in the book! Plenty of swoony moments. I loved trying to solve the mystery and was surprised by some of the ending plot lines. The story was very well done and I highly recommend!
This book was so good from the beginning to the end, it had me hook, interested and rooting for the characters until the end, and also the way that mystery plot worked perfectly and didn't distract from the main plot. PERFECT.
I found this story much slower than Nancy's other books, the first half was quite boring to be honest. But the second half was great as the pace picked up and the slow burn romance was fantastic! I loved the characters, especially the MCs. I was a bit disappointed in the villain, I thought his part in the story was too small. Overall I enjoyed this story, I've just definitely read better books by Nancy Campbell Allen.
Another smash hit by Nancy Campbell Allen! I loved this Victorian romance! I especially loved how the story kept me guessing! The couples chemistry was intoxicating!!
To Capture His Heart features Eva Caldwell, photographer, in the Victorian era. A successful independent woman in a male-dominated profession and male-dominated society is sure to draw attention. Some of that attention comes from Nathan, who belongs to her circle of friends, but has not let on that he is attracted to her.
Nathan Winston’s mother is throwing a week-long party in the county and needs a photographer. Eva fits the bill for the job. Plus they can pretend they are a couple to avoid Mom’s matchmaking designs. It just happens that Mrs. Winston is very supportive of independent women like Eva, so she is perfect for the party.
Lots of things happen at the party. The relationship between Eva and Nathan begins to change from pretend to capturing each other’s hearts. But other things start to go terribly wrong at the party. Mean girls try to make things difficult for Eva. And Eva’s very charming young assistant, Sammy, gets into trouble while worming his way into everyone’s heart.
This book is about good people: independent women, and the men that support them. It includes information about the evolving technologies of photography and the slowing changing Victorian society. To Capture His Heart is tied to The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart, but both books stand alone. If you are looking for a delightful wholesome historical romance, Nancy Campbell Allen has lots to offer.
Through Netgalley, the publisher provided a copy of this book. My review is my honest opinion.
Loved this book and cannot wait for more from this author. One of my favorite reads this year! Eva is what I want every romance heroine to be & Nathen, the perfect hero! She is intelligent, witty & an independent career woman and he being a Detective is her match in every way. I love the fact that Nathen supports her career & never undermines her abilities. I loved the angle of mystery thrown in and also the mother in law who plays the matchmaker! All in all this is what I want every historical romance to be! I love the first part of the series, but this one even more !! Nancy Campbell Allen is one of my favorite authors of this genre
I really enjoyed this story. It was a nice change from the regency I usually read.
I loved the characters and enjoyed the plot. I’ve read the steampunk books that are also written by this author and I think I liked this book even more than those.
This is the second book in a series, but it can be read as a stand-alone without missing out on anything important.
I love a house party setting with a variety of characters! This one was a bit unique with Eva and Nathan already knowing each other through the case solved in the previous book, as well as her photography work. I loved the details about early photography and how she had a mobile darkroom that she brought to Nathan's estate. This is the second book in the series and I wish I had read the previous one first, since Eva and Nathan's friendship begins there and I missed out on that since this book moves right into a deeper relationship, even though there is a brief pretense of pretending. Nathan's skills as law enforcement and a detective helped him see that Eve might return his feelings, but also sensed her reservations, and I loved how patient he was with her. They have some special moments that are so romantic, and even though there is a suspenseful mystery developing that keeps them preoccupied, working together gives them the opportunity to grow closer. Nathan's mother and sisters as well as Eva's assistant Sammy all added to the story with their vibrant personalities, and the drama from the guests as well as the danger from the villain kept the pace of the story moving along from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how there was a mystery that needed to be solved and I love how the romance developed between Nate and Eva. I liked that Eva had to let down the walls she had built and realize that Nate was not like the person from her past that had hurt her. I also liked how they worked together to find the bad guy. I thought the story was very well written and I enjoyed learning a bit more about the Victorian time period.

A very nice story, blending criminal suspense story with a romance story. Interesting to learn more about how photographs were created during the Victorian era.
3.5 stars. I truly enjoyed the story as it was “pleasant.” For me, a 4-5 star story would either include more character development/growth, or have a fairly unique storyline, or feel some strong emotion—whether it make me laugh really hard or cry because I’m swept along with the emotions of the story/character, etc.
I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.
After reading and really enjoying book 1 in this series earlier this year, this one was on my must-read list for sure! I loved this book even more than the first one. The chemistry and banter between Eva and Nathan was fantastic and made for a charming read/listen for me. This will without a doubt be one of my top 2022 reads and will be going on my keeper shelf. Loved this story!
To Capture His Heart by Nancy Allen Campell captured my attention real fast. This book was AMAZING! Definitely one of my top books for 2022.You will love this book if you like:- Fake Dating Trope- The Victorian Era- Mysteries- Helpful little assistants (Sam)Nancy definitely knows how to write a suspenseful romance. The mystery surrounding the house party really kept my attention. I kept jumping to different characters, trying to figure out if they were the criminal who was behind the threats towards Nathan's loved ones. Even at the end I was shocked. It had a little bit of the fake dating trope while being at Nathan's mother's party but I could tell quickly that they weren't going to be able to keep that up. Nathan and Eva's feelings for each other were growing for a while. They just need an opportunity to be able to show them to each other. Their love was sweet and heartfelt. I highly recommend this book. I can't say enough good things about it. *** I am beyond grateful I was given an ARC to write a review.
I wish I had reviewed this book when everything was fresh on my mind. I do remember how much I enjoyed this book.
I loved the friends-to-lovers theme. Eva and Nathan are great friends and work well together. They both harbor a secret, they admire each other. The problem is that neither has expressed their feelings to the other. A house party gives them both a week to admit their admiration.
Eva is a photographer and I loved learning about the process in the Victorian Era. There are aspects that I don't think have been needed in my lifetime. I appreciate Nancy Cambell Allen's research and the detail that she was able to share. Nathan works for law enforcement. He loves what he does, but he doesn't need the income. It is what interests him. They can work together on cases because of their areas of expertise.
The book is set during a house party that Nathan's mother is hosting. She wants him to meet someone and get married. To avoid her matchmaking, he says he is interested in someone, Eva. I found his mom to be delightful. She really sees more and knows more than her children gave her credit. His sisters were the perfect compliment to the party. They know how to keep the marriage-minded-misses at bay.
There is mystery and suspense. A criminal from Nathan's past is seeking revenge. He is intent on causing havoc. I loved following the clues that led to the mysterious man. Eva and Nathan work together to stop him before he can cause permanent harm.
I know this review is full of my ramblings. The thing to know is that I give this book a very strong recommendation.

Thank you to Netgalley for sending an E-ARC of this book.
This book is a historical romance/mystery about inspector Nathan and the well-known photographer Eva. On top of that it takes place in an eight day charity organisation at the coast of England.
I very much enjoyed the plot and the characters in the book. Since I didn't read the first book in the series I kind of missed the development of both of their feelings but reading it was fun anyway. The only negative aspect I found was, that the book was too short for my taste, I would have wanted a much longer book, where we see how their emotions for each other grow.
I loved this Victorina romance. It had fake courting, a house party, mystery, suspense and a fabulous first kiss! It had the thrill of a mystery dinner party. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
"'My dear friend,' he said softly and very much not for their audience, 'you are lovely every minute of every day.'"
This is such a wonderful story! I was totally captivated by the romance and love story! I enjoyed the fake dating trope in this time period/setting, and it was written in a way that felt unique. I was impressed by the way the mystery and romance built together, and never could guess who the villain was! I underlined so many favorite lines and parts and feel such a kinship to the characters in this series! I am so thankful for the gift of being able to read this one, and look forward to the next one in this series!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
A delightful historical romance and mystery. Entertaining with likeable characters.
Many thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Just the right amount of mystery, just the right amount of romance with a whole lot of characters you can’t help but love.
Including the side characters I can’t help but hope each of his sisters will get they own story.
I enjoyed the details about photography the author included and the way she gave you clues without giving anything away.
It was a fast paced mystery with a slow burn romance which led to just the right balance for a thoroughly enjoyable story.
Since they met, accomplished photographer Eva Caldwell and detective Nathan Winston have been attracted to each other but neither have acted on their feelings. Now, with Nathan’s mother determined to see him wed, he and Eva make a deal: a pretend courtship to hold family and other single women at bay. An innocent enough scheme, but a criminal from Nathan’s past threatens revenge. Together, Nathan and Eva must solve the mystery and apprehend the criminal before irreparable harm is done.
What I like about this book is that these two have met before. While they were attracted to each other from the first, it isn’t an instant love. They’ve had time to get to know each other and they have worked together in unusual circumstances.
While the first book was more mystery with a side of romance, this one definitely felt more romance with a side of mystery. I’m not sure how I feel about the change. This book definitely had a different feel from the first book.
Overall, it was well paced and detailed. I was disappointed that there were instances of Eva lamenting her tight corset. It seemed strange that an independent young lady would subscribe to the minority that tight-laced.
Readers of historical romance will enjoy this late Victorian era story. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own.
Mystery. Fake relationships. Hidden feelings. House parties. This book had it all, and it was a blast!!
In this book we get Eva and Nathan’s story! Yay!! We could see the sparks flying in the previous book, and just knew this would be a fun romance. This series is unputdownable. It will capture you from page one with its wit and mystery and lovable characters. Eva and Nathan embark in a fake relationship when Nathan’s family hosts a house party. Why?! To avoid some very unwanted attentions of course. And I’m sure you can imagine how much fun that gets in the story.
And the mystery?! One of Nathan’s cases has followed him to the house party and the twists and turns that case takes, I loved it so much! It added the perfect element if intensity and intrigue to the story.
If you haven’t started this series yet, The Matchmakers Lonely Heart being book 1, and this Book 2. You will absolutely love it!!
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the complimentary e-arc in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
Content: clean

Thanks to Nancy Allen Campbell and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an e-arc of To Capture His Heart
I’m a sucker for historical romance and this book was no different. I love that the main women of this series are seeking independent lives and even have their own jobs as it is the turn of the century. Eva, who this book is centered on, is a photographer who occasionally moonlights for the police department for crime scene photos. Nathan, a detective, just so happens to be one of the detectives she works with often and met the previous year when her cousin was working with Nathan's partner.
Nathan and Eva have been dancing around their feelings for a year, but when Nathan’s mother is hosting her yearly fundraising event, he is concerned his mother is plotting in hopes he might marry. Nathan blurts out he is interested in someone and his mother insists on hiring her as the photographer and inviting her to the event. So begins Nathan and Eva’s “fake” courting.
Meanwhile a criminal from one of Nathan’s past cases has resurfaced. Nathan and Eva work together to solve the mystery at hand, while dealing with snooty ladies of the upper class, and also dancing around their true feelings for one another.
If you enjoy historical fiction romances I recommend you pick this up. Also I would recommend this romance to anyone since it is a clean romance with no sex, since I know not everyone wants that in their books. This is book 2 in the series, but you could easily read this as a standalone as well.
We met Eva and Nathan in book one of the matchmakers series. He is a detective and she is a photographer who sometimes photographs crime scenes. When his mother wants him to attend her annual house party full of eligible young ladies, Nathan panics and claims he is already interested in someone so there is no need to meet her guests. When his mother asks about the woman he likes he tells her she is a photographer. Since there is no other female photographer in London, his mother knows instantly who he is talking about and has him invite Eva and hires her to photograph the party. They make an agreement to act interested in each other to save Nathan from his mother's matchmaking. The story is slow moving and mellow even with an escaped kidnapper out to get his revenge on Nathan. The party moves along, there's a couple of "Mean Ladies," to hate, parlour games to play, and sabotage to the camera equipment, while Eva and Nathan quickly fall in love. This is a zero steam romance.
Nancy Campbell Allen never fails to give readers what they want. This delightful romance brought back all my favorite characters from The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart, yet gave me all the Eva and Nathan I could handle. I love how Allen incorporates mystery with falling in love.
Nathan and Eva made my heart pitter-patter throughout the entire house party. They also made me want to take a vacation to the seaside to explore caves and wade with my feet in the shallows.
Though, I do have to say that Sammy steals the show. I love that little boy and his witty attitude. He is a good nugget through and through.
I award To Capture His Heart a full 5 out of 5 stars.
A mystery that keeps you on your toes. Loved the first half in particular, probably because the romance was more subtle and the mystery had more clues. Towards the end things speed up a lot and there's not as much for the reader to figure out. A solid clean proper romance.
I’ve been really enjoyed romance fiction and To Capture His Heart ticked all the boxes. Will read again.
I loved everythign about this, the two leads, the part of the series, the house party undercover and the mom and other characters, I want to go back and read the firs t in the series to
A quick-thinking reply lands Nathan and Eva in a fake relationship for a Victorian house party. There is a mutual attraction from both parties, and as they occasionally work together (he as a detective and she as a photographer), this match seems to be natural and easy.
Mysterious happenings occur and with a wide cast of probable culprits, this duo is determined to solve it. I loved all the characters, from Eva's matter-of-fact and capable personality to Nathan's charming, smart self, and the house full of friend, strangers, and servants.
Nancy Campbell Allen creates a highly entertaining tale with believable characters and a convincing, swoony romance. I couldn't get enough of this story!
Content: mild moments of peril/danger; mild romance

I just love this series, and this is Matchmakers #2.
You can't go wrong with the combination of historical mystery and romantic suspense.
Having worked professionally with Nathan Winston who is a detective, Eva Caldwell has worked with him and the constable documenting crime scenes with her photography.
When his mother decides to have a weeklong dinner party and matchmaking session, she needs a photographer and he knows just who to get for the job, if she'll agree to it. Yes, you guessed it, Eva. It'll be easy he says, she just has to pretend he is courting her so the matchmaking ladies at the event won't look his way because he'll be "taken."
And for Eva when the pretend courting starts to feel all too real, well is she really to blame when he has the most charming personality and is so handsome?
When danger from Nathan's past creeps up he and Eva have to be extra vigilant to keep themselves and the other guests safe all the while solving a mystery and perhaps falling in love.
I love how the author weaves intriguing mystery and history with a well told and fast paced story.

I loved the first book The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart and was really excited to learn there would be another book. I love the Victorian era and how women had a little more freedom to have jobs, which Eva has. She's a photographer but also photographs crime scenes for local police which I found interesting. She enters into a fake relationship with Detective Nathan Winston so he can avoid all the young ladies his mother has lined up for him at her house party.
This was such a fun read with a mystery to solve and all the people at the house party to investigate. Nathan and Eva are perfect for each other and I found all the information about photography in the Victorian era very interesting. I really hope the author plans to write another book in this Matchmakers series.
I received a complimentary copy from Shadow Mountain via NetGalley, but also purchased a physical copy for my personal library. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.
What an enjoyable Victorian mystery! To Capture His Heart is book two in the Matchmakers series, following The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart. If you read book one, you will already know the two main characters in this story, Eva and Nathan. However, this book can also be read on its own, too, although the previous events in book one are referenced a few times in this novel.
I loved the gentleness and respect in this story between Eva and Nathan. They both greatly admire each other, yet are hesitant to put their hearts on the line when the novel begins, as they do not want to jeopardize their friendship. But I love watching as their playacting at courting becomes the real thing. The flirting and care that Nathan shows Eva begins to move him to be honest about his affections. So sweet!
I ended up listening to the audio version of this story and thought the narrator did a great job, too.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is the 2nd book in the series and has my favorite romantic trope, the fake engagement. I enjoyed the book. The characters are great. The mystery is good. I appreciate the ARC I received from NetGalley.
Eva has built up a small and successful photography business and recently began to work with the local constabulary to photograph crime scenes. A friend through work, Nathan, requests that she come to his mother's house party as photographer with a side of fake courtship. He needs the ladies, mostly his mother, off his scent. It doesn't hurt that he's held a tendre for Eva and maybe can use it as a means to get closer to her.
The mystery aspect of the book wasn't surprising in its conclusion but I look to Nancy for her ability to write a sweet and thoughtful romance. I love a "he fell first" and Nathan's interest in Eva is delightfully expressed through the prose. This can easily be read as a standalone but I recommend reading anything Nancy writes, especially to those who love a believable historical romance without on page intimacy.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
A delightful read from beginning to end.
Photographer Eva Caldwell and detective Nathan Winston are both respected professionals who hold one another in high regard, content in their lives but longing for more than friendship. Nathan's mother throws a weeklong party for singles, with matchmaking in mind and in order to avoid his mother's schemes he asks Eva to attend as his love interest to prevent his mother from attempting to make him a match. Eva agrees to the arrangement but it also makes the feat of making known their true feelings for each other more difficult. When strange things start happening at the party the must work together to figure out what is going on before someone gets hurt.
Just like its predecessor before it this charming Victorian mystery was engaging form the start with winning protagonists and a riveting plot. I loved that this book brings back many familiar faces, including the main characters who were a part of the previous book as well, though this book could also be read as a stand alone. Great character development and interaction, I loved how the speech and mannerisms felt authentic to the time period and really added to the story. I also really liked how Eva employs Sam as her assistant, he is such charming young man, eager to learn more and be helpful.
Overall, this was such a fun read, engaging from beginning to end. I liked that Nathan is such gentleman, and is protective of Eva in the most gallant ways throughout. He is thoughtful and really admires her work. A wonderful escape of a read, clean in content with a great plot. Definitely recommend!
