Description
Chemistry is often students’ favorite science because so many cool concepts are included in the field. This book showcases some of the most fun ways to use chemistry. The projects’ outcomes are so amazing, they might even seem like magic! Readers are invited to split water, make their own fireworks underwater, shine up a penny, and much more. Each project is preceded by an explanation of the chemistry concept shown in the experiment or activity. Certain projects are marked as a great starting place for a science fair project and the scientific method concludes the book.

Several of these "surprises" were great and fit perfectly in my middle school science classroom. I especially liked the Penny one, which would make a great activity to introduce CERs at the beginning of the year. I loved that each science surprise was affordable to do, which is what I think is one of the hardest things to do when teaching in a tier I school with very limited funds and resources for students to access science fair level projects.
The scientific method page was great, too. I love that it outlined it and it makes an easy reference. However, many schools are moving away from teaching "scientific method". I know for my school, we now are supposed to refer to it as "engineering practices" (right?!?!).
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
A fantastic resource to get kids excited about science. Included are ten experiments using easily obtainable materials around the house. Titles like BUILD THE BEST BIG-BUBBLE WAND and MAKE YOUR OWN MAGIC DOUGH will motivate young scientists to learn how to carry out experiments.
Each of the ten focus on chemistry and are detailed in an easy to understand way. The title and image are colorfully displayed along with Project Time, Key Concepts and Background. Next come Materials users will need to gather, followed by Preparation, and Procedure.
Once the task is completed there are suggestions for Extra experiments along with a discussion of Observations and Results. Parents will appreciate the handy paragraph titled “Cleanup”.
I tried several of the experiments and found them to be not only fun, but they also provide a great framework for discussions about scientific principles.
In the back pages readers will find an excellent background on the Scientific Procedure, a Glossary, and Additional Resources. SCIENCE SURPRISES is the 7th title in this series and well worth your time. View all the the science based titles from Rosen Publishing and start your youngster out on a path to science understanding.
Love this book!
It has 10 experiments you can do at home with your kids, without much prep. There is a list of stuff you need, how to do it and a simple and easily understandable explanation. It's colourful, pretty to flip through and experiments are fun to do.
It's a great way to get kids excited for STEM, it really makes the science come alive.
The perfect. companion for teachers, homeschool families, or anyone who loves Science. "Science Surprises" has 10 easy experiments that require little to no prep. Explanations are easy to follow and I really love the Science Fair Ideas and observations and results at the end of each experiment. This would be a great addition to the professional library in schools.
👩🔬 Yes, I found another great book full of fun and learning… and today the focus is Chemistry!
👨🔬 This book is full of fun chemistry experiments! Each experiment includes the list of things you will need (which you likely already have), easy-to-understand instructions about how to perform the experiment, and an explanation about chemical reactions that are occurring. There is even a section on how to properly clean up after your experiment.
👩🔬 The experiments include separating liquids with salt, creating underwater fireworks, and even making your own magic dough!
👨🔬 At the end of the book there is an explanation of the scientific method (yay!) and a glossary. There is also a section for additional resources, including web addresses for videos that give further information about some of the experiments in the book.
👩🔬 This book makes chemistry fun! It would be a great resource for any middle grade classroom.
Thank you @NetGalley and Rosen Publishing Group for an eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own opinions.
Chemistry is fascinating, and this book makes experiments look fun.
I really enjoy how every experiment is explained and broken down. It's very reader friendly. The extras after each experiment are added treat.
This looks like a very fun and engaging science experiment book. A lot of household materials, thankfully. I like how it gives an introduction to the experiment and also an explanation afterwards. I also appreciate the reminder for children to clean up. I can't wait to try some of these with my newly 7 year old!
This book of science experiments provides clear instructions and good explanations for both curious kids and science instructors looking for a new experiment. And, in fact, there are some experiments in this book that are unusual. Kids in grades 4-8 would find this interesting, as would upper elementary or middle school teachers.
Great resource for at home science experiments! I love how, for every experiment, the materials were easily found within my home or a quick trip to a local store. I also appreciated all of the information surrounding the experiment, from the key concepts to the background to the very clear instructions to the post experiment observations notes. Very thorough and perfect for teaching kids not just how but also why! Really great for homeschoolers, camps, or anyone who wants to introduce their kids to science experiments without searching the internet for strange ingredients!
Thank you NetGalley and Scientific American Education for the advance copy. All options are my own.
A fun, enjoyable book of easy science projects. I look forward to trying some of these with my 7-year-old.
In Science Surprises, learners learn 10 science projects. The projects clearly show the time. They also tie the project back to science concepts. For example, Magic Dough teaches chemistry, solids, and liquids. Materials and procedures are easy to read. Overall, the pages for a project a filled with information. This may be great for adults but may be overwhelmnig to young readers.
Science Surprises: 10 Fun Experiments Using Chemistry is a fantastic collection of projects relevant to a school or home setting. The materials required are easily accessible. Each experiment explanation includes background information, a list of required materials, the procedure, and a discussion regarding observations. All information is written in such a way that it makes it a breeze to make connections with the scientific method. An explanation of the scientific method is also included near the end of the book. There are suggestions on how to take the experiments further peppered throughout the book, including science fair ideas. Each project concludes with a clean-up component, promoting positive lab safety habits and procedures. Science Surprises is a fantastic and well-rounded resource applicable to children, parents, teachers, and beyond.
