Description

Mark Bittman’s first cookbook for kids is here! His newest in the beloved How to Cook Everything series focuses on empowering children with all the kitchen skills they need to choose, prepare, and cook the foods they like with the people they love.

Mark Bittman inspires kids to be more adventurous eaters by teaching them first how to identify and cook their favorite foods, then build from there. With flexible recipes designed for all the ways kids approach meals and snacks, How to Cook Everything Kids promises to turn the kitchen into a place of joy and discovery. The detailed recipe directions and fun features for key ingredients, techniques, and basics are all written specifically with little hands in mind, while Bittman covers navigating your kitchen, what different tools do, and preparing and measuring ingredients. These tools help kids ages 8 to 12 (give or take) develop confidence and independence in the kitchen so they learn when to lean on adults, and how to make their own simple swaps and variations. The result is a cookbook that can be customized for every individual child.

How to Cook Everything Kids includes:

  • Chapters covering every meal and food group: Breakfast Any Time; Flavor Bursts (sauces); Hold On! (sandwiches and other finger foods); Sips and Spoonfuls (soups); Edible Colors (a vegetable primer with flexible recipes for all the basic techniques); Pasta and Noodles; Grains and Beans; The Big Stuff (satisfying mains); Now Bake Something; and Sweets.
  • Make Friends with Your Kitchen, an expanded opening chapter designed to familiarize kids with their equipment and ingredients, and all the cooking words they need to know.
  • Visual guides from photography and cartoons to snapshots of everyday kids cooking Bittman’s recipes in their kitchens encourage the next generation of home cooks to explore and create.
  • Recipes for every skill level: Bittman covers everything from kid go-to’s like Scrambled Eggs, Quesadillas, and Popcorn in a Pot, into more complex dishes like Roasted Veggies, Chicken Mark Nuggets, and Banana Bread. Features on skills like frosting a cake, building a grain bowl, and making an epic sandwich teach kids how to try even more as their knowledge and skills grow.

How to Cook Everything Kids is a perfect introduction for kids looking to get into the kitchen and start cooking.

Some recipes have “Did you know” and other information, what to eat with the recipe and variations. Easy to follow directions and very personable. The differing varying of levels is very helpful for younger kids to immerse themselves into cooking.

The drawings are so cute. Very informative about all the different ingredients used int these recipes and easy to read language. There are multiple pages on how to cut different fruits and vegetables with little pictures to show each step. The recipes also provide creativity as there are simple recipes with ways to spice it up with the encouragement of finding even more variations. The fun approach perfect for kids pushes them to get outside of their comfort zone and try new foods.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Great kid friendly recipes that are the quality you’d expect from Mark Bittman. These are solid recipes that would be great for adult learning how to cook, too.

This is a great place to start if your child is ready and eager to learn how to cook and bake. The illustrations are cute, the recipes are easy to understand and implement, and Mark Bittman explains the whys and hows in an engaging manner.

You’ll find everything from egg dishes, pasta and snacks to pudding, cookies and cakes. It’s easy to pick one recipe at a time and make your way through the book at your child’s desired pace. An absolutely brilliant cookbook for children, families and beginners. This book has it all. With step-by-step instructions on getting started cooking. This book shows how to prepare meals, the different types of vegetables, herbs and more. That’s just the beginning. The book is packed with information on how and what to cook. Then when you get to the recipes it’s packed with amazing photos and guides. The recipes are so detailed that children will be able to follow with ease, and those of us adults who are learning too. The recipes have descriptions, detailed ingredients and amazing step by step directions and more. They are foods that children and family will want to try. Every food group and meal can be found. I have learned so much from this book myself, like how to correctly make couscous. Then of course we found some new favorites like Chocolate-cherry Bonbons, FrenchToast and Baked Potatoes. This book is perfect for the little chef in your lives as a guide on getting started cooking and to get creative. We love this as a family especially. I highly recommend it for any family with little ones who want to learn to cook or dream of being a chef. I can’t even say enough about how amazing this cookbook is. We received it as an ebook ARC but can’t wait for October so we can add a copy to our home collection of favorite cookbooks. It makes a great gift as well. Enjoy and get cooking with your kids.

This book will grow with your children, you can teach them about the utensils used in cooking, how to use a stove, oven, mixer and food processor.
If you have young children they can add and mix some of the ingredients while the adult or older children chop and cook over the stove or oven.
They will enjoy using oats to make oatmeal, granola, mush and oatmeal cookies.
This book teaches them how to organize the ingredients needed to make food, prepare it and cook it.
They will enjoy surprising their friends with guacamole, chicken chowder and chocolate chip cookies!

Thank you to NetGalley and Harvest for this ARC. I have followed Mark Bittman for decades and I know his cookbooks never fail to satisfy my interest in cooking. I particularly liked this specific audience, for kids. I think it's never too early to get kids interested and skilled at cooking and I found this book to be an excellent primer. The writing is focused on the many areas that are important, such as safety, necessary equipment, basic skills, etc. I love the illustrations that will provide additional interest in looking at the book and for informational purposes. The variety of recipes provides something for everyone and they are offered in a spectrum of skill levels. I think this would be a great addition to anyone who is introducing a child to cooking, or helping them advance their skills in the kitchen! I am excited about purchasing the hardcover copy when it comes out in October!

What a fun cookbook! A good introduction to a wide range of cooking techniques and dishes. Though it’s clearly oriented towards kids, it would be good for anyone just leaning to cook. Lots of very basic recipes, as well as ones that stretch your skills a bit. Many of the recipes are ones that most kids will be familiar with. No better way to,get kids to stretch there palate than to get them cooking their own food. Fun illustrations too.

Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything (Kids Edition) is one of the best kids' cookbooks I’ve found! The recipes are easy to follow, with plenty of photos and graphics that make the instructions clear and engaging for young cooks.

I learned to cook as a young adult using Bittman's How to Cook Everything, and I'm excited for the kids version!

My 8-year-old is really enjoying cooking from this book. She can read and understand the recipes on her own, and she’s able to make most of them with minimal help. She also really likes the variety of recipes offered, and unlike many kids cookbooks, they are foods everyone in the family enjoys.

The book also clearly marks where adults might need to step in for younger kids, which she likes, because she can feel like she's the manager of the recipe, and I'm assisting her rather than taking over.

I highly recommend this cookbook for kids aged 8 and up who want to have fun while learning to cook!

How to Cook Everything Kids is a great cookbook for children curious about cooking or interested in learning how to cook and/or even just help out in the kitchen. There are great visual aids to show step by step how to cut certain things, for example. This cookbook is very well organized into various sections, and full of recipes that are both practical in helping to build strong foundational skills, and in enticing children to want to make them in the first place!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a free advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
