Description
In a new series for early readers, Mousse receives an unexpected visit—and forms an unlikely friendship.
Mousse loves his solitary life by the sea. In the mornings, he strolls on the beach to take in the fresh air. He swims in the cool water. And he waits for the tide to bring him the day’s small treasures. Today, however, a visitor comes ashore in his living room, a truly unexpected visitor. A creature named Barnacle...
In this delightfully illustrated picture book for early readers, Claire Lebourg depicts the unexpected pleasures in helping others and finding friendship in unexpected places.
Advance Praise
"This charming fantasy is suitable for reading independently or as a read-aloud . . . A pleasing picture book with a chapter book format"—School Library Journal
"Reminiscent of the late William Steig’s work, this imaginative French import blends elegant turns of phrase with delicate art, rendered in watercolor and pen and ink. Divided into three chapters, the text includes challenging syntax and vocabulary, but emergent readers will eagerly push on, encouraged by the gentle humor and by their feelings of sophistication over the naïve Mousse. The interplay between visuals and words are a sheer delight, while the final punchline will have little ones giggling. Enchanting."—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review
“An unmitigated delight.”—Bruce Handy, The New York Times

A story about the charming Mousse, who lives by himself by the sea. He enjoys the peace and quiet, as well as sending the various treasures he finds on the beach out into the world.
One day, a visitor arrives, and takes over his solitary life. Mousse takes care of Barnacle, and is surprised when more arrive. Mousse is perhaps even more surprised, after Barnacle leaves, wondering what his house guest might be up to.
The illustrations are delightful and pair so well with this whimsical tale. I loved the peace and tranquillity of Mousse's home by the ocean, and of his routines, which are so amusingly derailed by Barnacle.
Thank you to Netgalley and to Publisher Spotlight for this ARC in exchange for my review.
Despite the title, Mousse isn’t a dessert, but a creature that looks as if he’s equal parts shrew and striped sock. He’s a seashell collector and salesman with a penchant for coffee. Claire Lebourg has penned a delightful day with Mousse that differs from the usual picture-book fare. And I love the way Mousse deals with the walrus J.P. Barnacle! Kudos also to Sophie Lewis for the wonderful translation.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Publisher Spotlight and Transit Children's Editions in exchange for an honest review.
This is such an odd and adorable little storybook. Mousse lives in a little house by the sea that he takes good care of. His routine keeps getting interrupted by Barnacle, who is there without permission at first, but the two grow to be friends. There are short segments and it's easy to read, with a wistful, fun mood. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
