Another stellar thriller of a book by the masterful Jane Casey. Rob, a secondary character, in her Maeve books becomes the main and is quickly involved in the shenanigans of a crime family. Taut, expertly written. Not to be missed.
I really enjoyed reading this, it had that crime thriller element that I was looking for and was engaged with the overall feel. The characters were really well done and was invested in the story going on. I loved that it was about a family and how one person is going to destroy them. Jane Casey has a strong writing style and glad I got to read this.
This is my first Jane Casey book and won’t be my last. A fast- paced thriller about a police officer who infiltrates a crime family. Great read that opens the door to more stories about this character. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Fast paced thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat! This book was filled with the secrets, the lies, the thrills we look for! Great read! I will be reading more of Jane Casey's books!
Love this series! And how clever to have a story that centers on Rob as the main character but still include Josh and Maeve! It answers a lot of questions from Rob and Maeve’s previous relationship. The only thing that bothered me, is the end of the last Maeve book didn’t really seem to gel with what was going on here so you are not sure about the timing.
Rob is working undercover with Opal to bring down a crime family. There is a lot of tension as he tries to get in their good graces while still knowing who to trust. The Carter patriarch is up to some anti Semetic plots which is hard to read about, but Rob has a part to play while trying to also be a cop.
The wrap up was satisfying with a some surprises as well. I will be waiting anxiously for the next Maeve/Josh book in the series. Thank you Net Galley, the publisher and the author for the ARC to read and review.
A very tense thriller about an undercover cop infiltrating a dysfunctional mob family run by a wealthy man who wants to cement his place among the ultra-wealthy class of right-wing British oligarchs by organizing a terrorist attack that will be blamed on Muslim immigrants, furthering their goals. There's a bit of a "succession" vibe in the family as the cop becomes an all-around helper at the mansion, and on the part of the cop, there's a long-running relationship drama with Maeve Kerrigan, who has been the protagonist of the series, with this cop as an ex who remains attached.
It's well paced and will please series fans as well as people who like reading slightly soapy dramas about mobsters and wealthy villains. Not entirely my cuppa tea, but I am sure it will hit the spot for most readers.
I throughly enjoyed this book. It was fast paced, and held my attention. I finished this book in less than 2 days. The family was very dysfunctional, and some of them very unlikable. Just like any other family IRL. Amazing, action packed novel.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book.
This was my first Jane Casey book, which I read not knowing it was a stand-alone novel linked to a series starring Maeve Kerrigan. I was glad not to have this background as I enjoyed the story told from Rob’s point of view as he goes undercover to save the country from a wealthy and powerful group with extremist views. The stakes are high and intense in this fast-paced suspense novel.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper 360 for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
Jane Casey’s The Outsider is a riveting addition to the crime thriller genre, showcasing her talent for creating suspenseful and intricately plotted narratives. As a book reviewer who values originality and well-crafted plots, I found this novel to be an exceptional read.
This story centers around Rob Langton, an undercover police officer assigned to infiltrate the Carter family, a seemingly respectable household with dark secrets. Rob’s mission is to gather evidence against Geraint Carter, the family’s patriarch, who is suspected of orchestrating a series of violent crimes. As Rob delves deeper into the Carters’ world, he uncovers a web of deceit and danger that threatens not only his mission but also his life.
Casey excels in creating complex and believable characters. Rob Langton is a nuanced protagonist, grappling with the ethical dilemmas of his undercover role. His internal conflicts and the tension between his professional duties and personal morals add depth to his character. The Carters, particularly Geraint, are portrayed with chilling realism, making them formidable and memorable antagonists.
Casey’s writing is engaging and evocative. She skillfully builds tension and maintains a fast-paced narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Her descriptive prose brings the settings and characters to life, immersing readers in the story’s atmosphere. The dialogue is sharp and realistic, enhancing the authenticity of the characters’ interactions.
The Outsider explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the moral complexities of undercover work. It delves into the psychological impact of living a double life and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of justice. The novel also touches on contemporary social issues, adding a layer of relevance and depth to the story.
The Outsider is a compelling and thought-provoking thriller that will appeal to fans of crime fiction and psychological suspense. Jane Casey has crafted a story that is thrilling and emotionally resonant, with a plot full of unexpected twists and turns. This book is a testament to her skill as a storyteller and is highly recommended for readers who appreciate a blend of intense action and psychological depth.
I liked this book! I liked the thrill and the suspense of it all. It started off a bit slow and did also have some parts in the middle that were slow but it picked up at the end. It was full of action and suspense. The characters were written pretty well and it kept me wanting to read on and find out what would happen.
Thank you to NetGalley, to the author, and to the publisher for this complementary ARC in exchange for my honest review!!!
I'm a big fan of Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series and this book is from the perspective of Maeve's ex-boyfriend. It answers some questions about why he disappeared from her life and what was going through his head. It's always fun to see a protagonist through someone else's eyes or even just hear about them as the circumstances of the book made that seem unlikely (he is undercover).
This book feels more like a thriller than a mystery especially as compared to some of her other books. I did not anticipate many of the twists and turns and often found it very hard to stop reading because I had no idea what would happen next.
This book would work as a standalone so it's worth a read even if you haven't read the Maeve Kerrigan series as Rob, the protagonist, gives background so you wouldn't miss out on what is happening. But if you have read the series, it's immensely satisfying to have some of the backstory filled in. As always, Jane Casey's writing is compelling and beautifully executed.
Rounding up from 4.5 stars.
Jane Casey’s The Outsider is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride! With its fast pace and explosive twists, this book hooks you from the first page. Rob Langton’s high-stakes undercover mission is gripping, and the Carter family’s dark secrets add layers of tension and intrigue.
The blend of action, suspense, and psychological depth makes this a standout crime thriller. As the clock ticks down, every chapter feels like a race against time, keeping you turning the pages late into the night.
A must-read for fans of action-packed thrillers and unrelenting suspense. Don’t miss it! 🕵️♂️💣✨
