Description

Meet Grimpy! He’s a dumbo octopus, and he’s taking us on a tour of the whole cephalopod class—underwater creatures such as cuttlefish, nautiluses, octopuses, and squids.

Grimpy knows all about what makes these many-armed marvels so special, like how the coconut octopus uses tools or the cuttlefish talks with color! It seems like every creature has a special ability—except him. When Grimpy gets stuck on everything a dumbo octopus can’t do, the other cephalopods show him why it’s great to be a dumbo.

Deep sea creature graphic novels seems like a bit of a niche but I'm delightfully surprised by another wonderful option! After reading Science Comics: Deep-Sea Creatures my son (6) and I were looking for another great graphic novel that would be, as the authors of Deep-Sea Creatures puts it, edutainment: education and entertainment in one. This is exactly what this book offers too! I'm a Dumbo Octopus! doesn't just teach you about dumbo octopuses, as the title might suggest, but rather teaches you about many cephalopods (a word I've learned from these incredible titles). The dumbo octopus acts as the narrator/tour guide, telling us all about other cephalopods and all of the cool things about them. As it goes on, the dumbo octopus gets discouraged: He doesn't have any of the cool things the other cephalopods do. He finally has his meltdown, bemoaning that he's just not as great as the others, when the other cephalopods join him and reassure him. In fact, they tell him that they so appreciated how he highlighted all of their cool features that they'll do the same for him and help him see how wonderful he is. If you have a kiddo who loves learning, especially about ocean life, this is a MUST BUY. If you have graphic novel lovers (don't we all?) then this is a good add to your collection. I'd recommend for kids K-4 and any public or elementary school library or classroom. Highly recommend!

I received this DRC from NetGalley.

This book is so cute. The illustrations and coloring were done really well. Even on pages with a lot going on, the artwork is clear and not overwhelming. I definitely learned some cephalopod facts. I think the only thing I might have changed would be to list kingdom on top down to genus instead of the other way around. Parents will probably have to help their kids with pronouncing some of the big words, but I think this would be a good book for any child interested in ocean creatures.

I think this book will be absolutely perfect for the early grade kiddos who want to get their hands on more science information! It's a sweet story woven into lots of facts about cephalopods, and the illustrations are awesome. A graphic novel was a great way to go about keeping this engaging for kids.

This didn't feel like nonfiction because I was grinning the whole time I was reading this. It's just so cute and fun and easy to follow. The pictures are adorable. This is the kind of book that could help kids really enjoy science. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

The CUTEST nonfiction graphic I've read in a while! Grimpy the dumbo octopus gives a tour of all the things that make cephalopods special. 9 brains, blue blood, chromatophores, list list goes on and on!

The illustrations in this one are fabulously cutesy while the dialog is both informational and engaging. A must-buy for elementary libraries!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

This book is everything I look for to buy in kids books. I may be a bit biased however, as I'm naturally drawn to anything oceanic in nature. First I will say, I LOVE the color scheme used in I'm Dumbo Octopus! It is very calming and pleasing to the eye. My youngest kiddo is 8 and he really enjoys nonfiction books as well as graphic novel style. When I showed him this he thought it was "awesome!" We both enjoyed learning all about the different types of cephalopods and I even learned about some I didn't know. He feels super smart that he can use the word cephalopod! I appreciate that the language is not dumbed down and still provides a bit of a challenge. This is a wonderful little book and I cannot wait to purchase it for friend's kids and school libraries!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to have my son and I to read an early copy of I'm a Dumbo Octopus!

Both myself and my kids give this book 5 stars! Currently, we are a household obsessed with sea creatures and this little comic we read on our pads was both fun and educational. This book is a complete package: the story, the illustrations, color schemes, all of it is superbly well designed and presented in a way that satisfies both the kids and grown ups tasked with reading it. Absolutely love this little story.

I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. The graphic novel style of writing and the dumbo octopus as the narrator were perfect. It was so thoughtful to review some of the cephalopod facts at the end of the book to really let the information sink in. I learned so much from this book, and my 6yo was captivated.

Children, especially those who are interested in science and/or animals, will absolutely love this adorable nonfiction graphic novel about cephalopods! The artwork is beautiful and does an excellent job of complementing the information provided without being distracting. The more scientific components are presented in ways that are easily digestible for readers of all ages; I especially liked how the narrator made references to things with which children may already be more familiar to help them grasp new concepts. Even I, at the age of twenty-seven, learned some really fascinating facts from this book!

This book combines so many of the things the children with whom I work ask me about regularly: science, animals, and graphic novels. I think this will be a big hit with both its intended audience as well as people of other age groups who get their hands on it!

This was a very cute and fun look at different kinds of octopi and various facts about them. It's great for children of all ages, including those like me iny theories but still able to enjoy new facts in a kid friendly way. It's like taking vitamins as gummies!

I for one did not know that tentacles were different from the arms octopi have (yes, technically, octopi don't have tentacles despite every calling their limbs that! Misinformation spreads once again!)

Or that there was an octopus species named for Dumbo the elephant.

This book also has a cute message of "everybody is special and unique in their own way" by highlighting how the octopi are suited for their environments.

This is an adorable non-fiction graphic novel for older kids! Easy and interesting facts accompanied by adorable illustrations. Easy to follow the flow of text. Would love to see a whole series of these.

Thank you Netgalley and publisher for the eARC!

I'm a Dumbo Octopus! is a nonfiction graphic novel about cephalopods with Grimpy the dumbo octopus acting as your guide. He tells us all about different skills and features each cephalopod like coconut octopuses, mimic octopuses, and Caribbean reef squids have and why they are beneficial - such as how a Caribbean reef squid can change color to scare other males or attract females and sometimes do both at the same time. Readers are sure to be engaged by the graphic novel format while getting plenty of laughs and even a boost of self-esteem like Grimpy does as they learn.

I'm a Dumbo Octopus! is a book all about octopuses from the perspective of a dumbo octopus. I really enjoyed this book, even as an adult. The illustrations are very cute, while still being informative. I learned a lot of new information about different types of octopuses! It also had a side theme of finding the things that make you unique as an individual. I'd recommend this for middle elementary up due to some of the vocabulary. There are lots and lots of multisyllabic scientific words.

Thanks to Anne, Lerner Publishing Group, and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
