This book rook me at least 8 years to read. Now I know why. The cover is very confusing, Icould not get past the first chapter. The kindle format I'd poorly formatted. Going forward please look at your manuscript before publishing it on netgalley.
Thank you for the review tho.
I don't normally read historical or even time travel stories, but with the two combined here, this one intrigued me...I'm glad I read it. The role reversal of the normal in historical romances was refreshing...the time travel also handled differently than has been the norm was captivating. An overall enjoyable story that transports the reader through time to where you can loose yourself in another time and place.
This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher and NetGalley. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
3 stars. An average time-travel story, with an interesting plot but drawn-out delivery. I was about to jump ship on this book when it started to pick up about halfway through.
Cailean Ross is a modern day man that (conveniently) is a champion swordsman participating in medieval reenactments. We begin at The Gathering, a reenactment festival with historical roots in Heatheredge, Scotland. Heatheredge takes their preparations for the Gathering very seriously, so much so that they entire town goes to great lengths to become a medieval city as best they can, down to covering storefronts to look more authentic to the 1400's and blocking any modern day conveniences possible. Val Ross heads up the event and even from the start seems a bit shady.
Cailean suddenly finds himself in a place & situation that is so damn authentically medieval, he begins to assimilate to the culture of the good old days - you know, just in case. However, he isn't quite certain that he's miraculously been whisked back in time. I guess it is a rather incredulous thing to believe if it were to happen to you, but it took Cailean nearly halfway through the story to really come to realize he has legitimately time-traveled. The story is rather slow through this point.
Once he is in medieval times - no, not the chain of jousting show restaurants where it's acceptable to eat with your hands - he immediately meets Julianna MacKay. A lady and widow, conveniently for Cailean, literally smacks into him. How's that for a meet cute? She has just witnessed medieval shady dude, Crowe, in the midst of what looked to be a medieval human sacrifice. We meet Julianna's family, all MacKays. We learn of the history surrounding these events and that modern day beliefs of that history differ from what really happened. This is what kind of slowed me down a bit. It seems that nearly everyone is a Ross or a MacKay. Or in Cailean's case, both!
SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT::::Val of modern times is also Crowe of medieval times. Add this to all the questions about Valdar Ross and I'm going a bit batty trying to keep everything straight.
Lady Julianna is one of those heroines that is stubborn and a bit bold for the time period, but luckily she and her family have status, so she gets a pass. She consistently wants to be right up in the action, some of which get a bit drawn out. Her brother Lennox, and the others associated with her family are all just fine characters but no one really stood out as being a great character. The Cailean/Julianna romance was fine. They get together in the end but the book still leaves a cliffhanger for the next book with the Crowe/Val Ross storyline. The next book will feature Lennox and Ginny, Cailean's sister who has apparently just found herself a modern-day transplant in the Heatheredge of yore.
Join Cailean Ross in a journey from the 21th century to the 14th century. Cailean is fulfilling a lifelong dream of participating in the Highland Heatheredge Gathering. Cailean is a champion i the medieval tourney circuit. However, Heatheredge is special, it is his history as he is a combination of Ross and Mackay bloodlines. Unfortunately for Cailean when he is transported back in time, the Rosses and Mackay's are at war with each other. In modern times he plays at sword fighting, in the 14th century he must stay alive by his skiill with the sword. Not only his life but also the life of Julianna depends on it. It takes him a while to realize that he has actually been transported back in time and just not in an extention of a reenactment.. Why do some of the people he meet look like copies of people he met in modern Heatheredge. How does he share his knowledge of the past to save others without being declared a sorcerer? This is a fast paced book that has a lot of action, mystery, and intrigue. As with other books by these two authors it is a wonderful read. My only complaint may sound a little prudish but I just do not like the liberal use of the f word in what I read. Its use does not add to the story and is not a word in my vocabulary. Otherwise this is a worthwhile read. It ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, but is setting up the next book. Can't wait to read it.
I love a good time travel romance, especially when it is set in the Scottish highlands. This tale is filled with adventure, passion, intrigue, and a happily ever after.
DNF...
I just couldn't finish this no matter how hard I tried to go through with it.
I'm 21% into the book, and I don't care what happens to the characters, I'm done.
I received a free copy of this novel from the publishers via Netgalley in return for an honest review.
This is an engaging historical romance which will interest readers of historical fiction, mysteries and romance. Cailean Ross is a 21st century champion mediaeval tournament fighter who finds himself in 14th century Scotland. Understandably, it takes him a while to realise what has happened, and during that time he has the opportunity to fall in love as well as make a name for himself, while figuring out what on earth is going on.
The mystery is plausible and engaging, the romance is believable and not too over the top, and if you love sword fighting, you'll be happy with the many and detailed descriptions of Cailean's battles.
The only thing I'm not happy about with this book is the cliffhanger ending. Cliffhangers are mean and they force people to buy another book in order to find out what happened. It's great marketing, but not a nice way to treat your readers, in my opinion. This novel ends abruptly and leaves the reader with a feeling of having had the rug yanked out from under them, just as things were getting good. Authors need to be careful doing this as it may leave the reader feeling disinclined to purchase the next book because they feel they've been led up the garden path with the first one.
Loved it, looking forward to read more books from this author.
Great story loved it from beginning to end. Will definitely read more from this author
a good interesting and unique story. Enjoyed from the beginning.
It has been a long while since I have read a good Scottish historical romance. This one was even better because of the time travel involved. Found it very hard to put this book down, it was so exciting. The writing was excellent and the content was brilliant. I loved Julianna and Lennox and Cailean is to die for. Bing a time travel book, there are many twists and turns and trying to figure them out just makes this book more exciting. I very much look forward to book two , Edge of Today. Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
It was ok, I had a hard time getting into it at first, but I was finally able to once I read it for a while. I would recommend giving it a try, it is a decent story line, and sometimes it's just me and not the book. So don't take my word for it, if it sounds like something you would enjoy, go for it. I will probably read it again sometime in the future to see if it interests me more, that has been known to happen, so definitely give it a try.
Publisher's Description:
Two of Scottish romance’s most loved authors have joined pens to write a thrilling new time travel series filled with passion, danger, and intrigue. These never-before-published novels will sweep you to Scotland’s Highland Heatheredge, where magic is real, time is relevant, and there is no escape from desire…
Men are disappearing in the Highland crofting village of Heatheredge. The authorities suspect foul play, but without signs of violence—or bodies—they can’t prove a thing.
World champion swordsman Cailean Ross is living the fantasy of a lifetime as the victor of Heatheredge’s medieval reenactment Gathering. But when the fantasy turns into reality, swordplay becomes a fight to the death and he finds himself among the ‘missing’ statistics.
Julianna Mackay flees a man she fears is an evil wizard and literally runs into handsome Cailean Ross. Cailean defends Lady Julianna from her attackers. Together, they set out in search of the key to a six-hundred-year-old curse that can only be broken in medieval Scotland.
When the veil of time is lifted, Cailean and Julianna find that love may not be enough to save them or those they hold dear.
My Thoughts:
Two of my favorite authors have collaborated in writing this all consuming beginning of this new time travel series.
It really grabbed the interest of this reader. The only thing I didn't like was the cliffhanger ending. Now I have to wait to discover what happens next.
I could not put it down and finished it in a 24 hour period.
I would give this beginning of this new series 4.75 of 5 stars for characterization and storyline and 4 of 5 flames for heat. Once the hero and heroine come together the sparks really fly.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this book.
