5 Stars for Design Your Own Crochet Projects
This book is great for anyone who know how to crochet and would like to learn how to create their own projects. There are loads of helpful tools to help you create your own wearable crochet items. I would recommend this title for any crochet enthusiasts.
While I was able to read through this instructional, I wasn't able to put anything more than the basics to work for me.
I just found that I don't have the creative ability to really put this to use and make my own projects.
However, if you have some ideas but just don't know how to exicute them, this is a great place to go for help! They walk you through out to lay out your design and figure out how much yarn you need, how to get the right size, etc.
This book was very helpful in how to design my own crochet projects. It was very informative & had some great teaching tools in it.
Some were above my skill level! But that's definitely a reflection on me rather than the book. Some great designs. Would make a great gift!
When I was little, my nonna would crochet little Barbie dolls dress, in between making dinner. Such flowery designs which fitted perfectly in a matter of minutes. She just looked at the doll pulled out some wool and volia a pretty tube dress.. I have always wanted to make crochet item like her. Unfortunately I still struggle at following crochet patterns. This book changes that, it gives me the knowledge and the power as to why and how.
The book is very basic, it starts from a scarf, but sometimes to understand the involved, one must progress thru the easy . The instructions are easy to follow and well explained and once understood, all types of artistic license can be applied and you will have the pattern to pass onto others or make it over and over. To crotchet is easy but to understand how the shaping is achieved, to me is the hard bit - with the help of this book it may become easier.
This is an excellent resource for learning how to design in crochet.
I love how the author incorporates formulas to help you figure out the information your swatch gives you, something that I always struggled with. Depending on what you are making it helps you figure out how much yarn you need and the measurements you should get. You can even access the formulas online if you don't have the book handy and it figures it out for you. There are patterns for each of the projects she mentions, cowls, scarves, hats, socks, mittens to help you start.
"Design Your Own Crochet Projects" is a very useful book thoughtfully crafted by someone who knows a lot more about crocheting than I do! She takes a very technical and precise approach to a hobby I occasionally pick up for long car rides. I learned a lot about the technical side of crochet and how to get things just right by choosing the correct yarn, the correct weight, and planning your project out using a swatch to check the gauge - all things I do not do as a casual crocheter, but that my projects could certainly benefit from.
Sara Delaney, designer and instructor, shares her knowledge and creativity at a level that is accessible to everyone. There’s a logical progression through the book beginning with the basics such as the 3 types of fibres, the ply, yarn weights, swatches and blocking (which of course is transferrable to all crochet projects) through to designing your own.
Want to know how to measure a scarf so that it will keep out cold drafts? Or how to measure for mittens? Socks? How to adapt an adult size pattern for a child? How to change colour? There are many awesome tips which Sara shares from her years of experience. You’ll find formulas and templates and tips on writing your patterns. You can try out those tips by following Sara’s own patterns at the end of each section and when you feel ready to create your own, there’s a stitch dictionary detailing 27 stitch patterns taken from those patterns.
I like to experiment and just run with an idea … I have had to frog a couple of crochet projects I started which just didn’t work for me. I’ve been lucky it hasn’t been more! Using the knowledge in this book will give me a high success rate moving forward. I’m feeling very inspired and excited.
If you’re ready for that next step, this is definitely for you!
I initially thought I would never put in the ground work described in this book for any of my new projects. I’m the type of person that would pick up a ball of yarn and just get on with it, creating through trial and error. However, through reading this I can see that a lot of time will be saved with some planning, and I suspect the planning will go quicker with time too. Easy descriptions of the steps you will need to take (though they might seem daunting at first) and inspirational patterns. Great book for anyone who wants to create their own project!
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I love to crochet--I do not free-crochet (if that's a word), but need a pattern. I purchase many patterns and decided I would love to be able to design my own. That being said, I am a lost cause. This book was well-written and beautifully illustrated, with several patterns being included. I just think I need to stick to buying patterns....
Unfortunately I was unable to access this book on my device and so unable to leave a review. There does not seem to be an option for this.
A perfect supplementary tool for every crocheter. As a newer crocheter and visual learner, I appreciated the accompanying images and loved that they added in issues the user may run in to as well. Overall, I felt this was a well-rounded book. It doesn’t just show you stitches and how to create them. It also discusses the different yarn types as well, which is influential to any project. As someone who is a visual learner, this is a perfect accessory. I recommend it to anyone interested in crochet.
An easy to follow, informative book. Great for long time crocheters and newbies. I believe it translates well for all skill levels
This was a fabulous book! It is great for the beginner crocheter or an experienced one. There are great explanations that take you from where to start to how to end. There is a great variety of different projects for different skill levels. There is also a great stitch dictionary at the end with fabulous clear photos.
This took me a little while to read and really, fully understand this book and how to work with it. But, it will be really helpful for me when I am making some future projects I have in mind!
Great book that gives you the tools to design and create your own items.
I love crochet. I've been doing it for a long time, but I've never been really good at inventing my own patterns. So this book was great in learning how to do it. And even if you don't invent your own patterns, this book has really amazing suggestions, that can help you with any pattern you want. I also loved seeing the introduction where the differences between the various types of yarn were shown. Great book and I'm looking forward to using some of the tips I've learned from it.
This is a fun crochet book for beginners to advanced. The book lists formulas for making scarves, hats, gloves, mittens, and socks. Included are also worksheets so you can determine how many skeins of yarn you’ll need, what stitch works best with which yarn, and so on. The author gives advice on how to combine techniques to create accessories. She walks you through the different kinds of fibers, yarn weights and recommended hook sizes. As you go through the book, you will learn pattern-free crocheting, but there are also traditional patterns at the end of each chapter. You will need to already be familiar reading patterns, or read through the book to figure it out before trying to do a project, but the stitches used are explained at the back. This is a great book where the author walks the reader through how the author created patterns and explained how to keep notes on what you did to create and share patterns. Included are tips, abbreviations, pictures, and a stitch dictionary at the end. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys crocheting or wants to learn.
I received a free copy from Net Galley in the hope that I would mention/review it on my blog. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
I have been crocheting for a while now and have always wanted to make my own designs. Sara Delaney has made that easier with this book. She walks you through the process of making a sample to gauge your project by, selecting a yarn, hook size, and how to write a pattern. It's all still a little confusing but it's a lot of information to process. To be honest, I'm not sure if I will ever be able to write out a pattern because it's hard for me to focus on the number of stitches I have made when I am working on a project. I seriously have problems with written patterns for this reason.
I love that there are charts to reference and worksheets to fill in that basically take care of the calculations for yardage for you. I will give these a try the next time I crochet something random and maybe I will be able to write down a pattern after all.
The author also includes example patterns so that you can understand the process better and I think those are make this book a success. Without these examples, there would be no way to figure this out. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I think it will really help the aspiring crocheter to try their hand at designing.
