This book was provided by the publisher and NetGalley for my honest review.

I liked this book a lot, and plan to buy a physical copy upon publication if I like the format (crafters know that matters for usability).

I’m an experienced knitter but occasional crocheter. Thus I have some experience with complex projects, but less certainty how to create them in crochet. I liked the structure of this book around the different accessories, with yardage requirements and magic formula templates. I also appreciated the illustrated comments on in-the-round versus flat crocheting - I would have valued more of this content in additional stitch patterns.

I enjoy pattern books but appreciate “framework” books even more. This is a great addition to the crochet literature - I can see myself consulting it repeatedly.

Design Your Own Crochet Projects is s very informative, descriptive, and well organized book. The illustrations coincide well with the explanations. Everything can be followed along easily. There are templates to download so you can keep track of your own original designs. This is great book for anyone interested in the art of crocheting.

This book will make a great library addition for anyone who enjoys crochet, regardless of experience. It includes some really lovely patterns for cowls, hats, mittens, gloves and socks, plus instructions for recalculating the designs in your own choice of yarn and stitch pattern.

The “Magic Formula” is really logical and is fairly simple to follow using the provided templates.

You choose your yarn and stitch pattern and then, once you have prepared and measured your swatch and have the measurements for the item you wish to crochet, you complete the templates provided. They include all the information you will need to calculate how much yarn is required and the appropriate number of stitches and rows to work for your desired size.

I definitely want a copy of this book as it will allow me more readily to use up my handspun yarns without having to find a specific pattern.

My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a digital review copy.

In Design your Own Crochet Projects, Delaney provides the tools to make your projects less surprising experiments and more well-researched and repeatable designs. I have never been adventurous enough to branch out into the art of designing my own patterns. This book is actually a confidence builder for a person like me. The instructions are clear and the templates the author supplies are very useful (and welcome), also she gives permission to copy them for personal use.

I liked this book a lot. As a beginner to crochet, I have often found crochet patterns intimidating. This book takes you by the hand and explains simply what you need to do, how to develop your own patterns, giving you the tools to record your own patterns, suggesting what yarn to use, stitches etc. There are plenty of good and clear photos, and existing patterns for you to use and adapt. All in all a great book and one that I will be buying to add to my library when it's released.

Much needed book,. Clear instructions, pictures are great and encourage the reader to pick up a hook!

I spin, dye, knit, crochet etc. and was so pleased to see that the choice of fibre is addressed at the start. It really can make or break the project. This is unusual in a crochet book so to read it early on I felt like this is a good start.

Swatching, blocking, choosing the yarn then how to work to a formula, it moves on from here to really interesting projects with all the information needed to start and complete projects, how to calculate yardage required. design your own and really become creative with crochet.

I would buy this book for presents , I really want to encourage more friends to crochet and not just knit!

There is a gap that can be filled by this lovely book. So pleased to have been allowed by NetGalley and the publisher to read and review it.

This is a great read for a beginner or intermediate crocheter.
Along with the offered patterns is information handy for their use as well as being useful for other projects. For example; the uses for different yarns, measuring for your project, and blocking.
I was able to use the information to adjust the pattern for a larger item, I had no idea how to go about that before. I found the book to be very useful and recommend it as a must read for anyone learning as it upped my game.

This is an excellent resource for beginners as well as those experienced in crochet. The instructions are clearly written with detailed photographs of projects. For either independent readers or crafting groups.

I’m sure this sounds familiar to many crocheters: after learning how to crochet you curl up with a hook and yarn and the result is a design of your own with no pattern reading necessary.

In Design your Own Crochet Projects, Delaney provides the tools to make your projects less surprising experiments and more well-researched and repeatable designs. While some may feel the accessories are too simple, they provide the reader with the skills to be able to evaluate yarn fibers, weights, stitch patterns, and how they all relate to what’s needed for a successful and repeatable project. The included photographs are clear and informative, adding to the written text. Where this book shines is the clear formulae to estimate yarn requirements and the templates to beat the blank page syndrome preventing a pattern from being written down. I think this title is helpful for anyone looking to be able to recreate what they crochet, either to make again or to write up for others.

How will I use this book?

It’s often helpful to step back and work on simpler designs when working on something more complex. This will help me step back and fine tune my crochet pattern writing skills. It is different from knitting and while I’ve crocheted for a very long time, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to write everything up in a way that makes sense to others. Remember: editing is not the same as writing!

As a long time crocheter and knitter, I have never been adventurous enough to branch out into the art of designing my own patterns. This book is actually a confidence builder for a person like me. The instructions are clear and the templates the author supplies are very useful (and welcome), also she gives permission to copy them for personal use.

There are also some great patterns to make with techniques that can carry through for a new designer. Instructions are clear for everyone.

NetGalley supplied this book to me in return for an honest review.

This is an awesome book for those who pursue crocheting and crochet design as a hobby or something more. The book introduces the "math " of crochet with diagrams of how to figure everything out from how to measure a person to how to translate those measurements into a finished piece that fits properly. She describes how to chose the right yarn type and links, the right hooks and the correct way to measure your stitches to get the correct gauge. The book is an easy and enjoyable read, while providing a wealth of information and skills. It is well photographed with amazing illustrations that fully show the how-to of each step. The book is a must have for any serious crocheter.

Crocheters don't have to depend on other people's patterns any more! Sara Delaney has taken the mystery out of designing your own crochet projects so now anyone who has a few projects under their belts and a pencil to do some simple math can become their own favorite designer. The process is simple and explained well. For basic accessories, a crocheter has here everything they need to make their own pattern. Want to make something a little fancier? You can learn how to do that, too.

This is a great book for crocheters who want to take their craft to the next level and learn how patterns work. Reading through the book and creating a few patterns of one's own will give a crafter insight into how to adjust other patterns to their liking and needs, too. Highly recommended for all crocheters.

An interesting introduction to designing crocheted items, considering hook size, yarn weight, and swatching.

While the title "Design Your Own Crochet Projects" was intriguing, the content didn't quite live up to the hope it generated. There were a number of simple patterns with advice on altering stitches to personalize the design and guidance on making a good fit. While I suppose this is designing on a remedial level, I was expecting more.

A good starting point for design but was disappointed in the amount of material that was actually repeated. The worksheets were repeated over and over again.

This book is one that I've been waiting and searching for. I've been crocheting for a little over ten years now, and have recently taken interest in writing my own patterns and designing items for myself and my family. This book shows you the steps to creating your very own pattern, and also how to work out the formula to determine gauge, hook size, yarn weight, everything you'd need. The patterns included in the book are great as well, and I have already created two items and love this. I find the information in the book invaluable and the author, Sara, explains it so very well, that it was very easy to understand and follow. I hope to use her information to create my own garments in the future.

I definitely will be referencing this book over and over again. Anyone that wants to design their own garments, or even just want to understand the specifics that designers go through, to create a design, must read this book.
