There are people who are observant and witty about everyday thoughts and actions. There are others who have the additional talent of converting them into the panels of a comic strip making us laugh as we see ourselves captured in that mirror. I am thankful that I came across this collection and read it on a day I needed to laugh aloud in an airport and have strangers look at me askance.
Received an ARC from NetGalley
You're probably already familiar with Loryn Brantz' work - it keeps showing up all over the internet. Lady Stuff is a compilation of her works that deal with the themes of make-up, napping, clothing, pets, etc. Nothing supremely original, and does not hold a candle to Sarah Andersen's works (which I would recommend over this). Nevertheless it was a short read. I would've liked it to be meatier, and I felt the collection as a whole was too short. There were too many comics about eyeliners, and situations where you waited until you turned into a skeleton - those themes got way too repetitive and way too fast in this limited space.
Overall, it's a super quick read, but you can easily the individual comics anywhere on the internet (and frankly, better to read them one at a time, cos reading them as a book highlights the issues I mentioned above). Wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it.
Hmmm, was this book written by one of my close, personal, online, social-media friends that I will never meet irl but spend too much time discussing fan fiction and memes with? Oh, a feminist x-ennial who regularly contributes to buzz feed......
Yeah, close enough
A super sassy, honest view of being a female in the 2010's. Brantz creates a meme-like, easy to digest narrative of the most #relatable woman. I laughed the whole time and kept having my boyfriend lean in to laugh too. Just because it's 'Lady Stuff' doesn't mean everyone can't get a good laugh out of it!!
I'm not familiar with Loryn Brantz but I have seen some of these panels floating around on social media. It was funny, it was relatable and it had me chuckling to myself a number of times.
Some panels were quite repetitive and others went over my head because I didn't relate to them, but overall it was enjoyable and made me smile.
Lady Stuff is a collection of comic panels depicting the relatable stuff that comes along with being a lady. From self-care to ambitions, many of my fellow ladies will be able to relate. This quick read will have you realizing that you're not the only one who goes through this. You might even learn some tips along the way.
I am no stranger to the comics published online by Loryn Brantz, so when I saw the opportunity to read her newest compilation before it was published, I jumped at the chance. The comics are not laugh out loud funny but they do merit a snicker and they're definitely relatable for the everyday 21st century woman. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Mating Habits
I'm a big fan of illustrated non-fiction and funny graphic novels and this one is great! It's similar to the Sarah's Scribbles books so it was a little repetitive and familiar but I liked the simplistic, relatable illustrations from everything from dating, period problems and general clothing, beauty and seasonal problems and issues that women have to deal with. I'd recommend it, especially if you like the Sarah's Scribbles books.
This is really more of a 3.5 than a 4, but what the heck, we'll round up! Loryn's comics are always adorable; I follow her posts on facebook, though, so I've already seen most of these. If you don't follow her regularly, this would be more worthwhile for you. A lot of her comics are definitely cute and relatable, and I do enjoy her little moments here and there of feminism and inclusion. This would probably be a good coffee table or bathroom book, you know? I don't think I'd recommend rushing out to pre-order it, though.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC! My opinions in this review are entirely my own.
Lady Stuff has several panels that are truly laugh-out-loud funny. The rest are relatable for anyone who has ever felt awkward (i.e. everyone).
This book was a perfect antidote to a hot, summer day! I liked it so much the first time, that I read it a second time. I would definitely recommend Lady Stuff to all of my friends!
There were some panels that felt repetitive, which is what kept my rating at four stars instead of five.
This book had me laughing so hard! These comics are so relatable and simple and ridiculous in the best way!
I particularly like the one that says:
"I can't come in to work today."
"Oh, ok, why not?"
"My bed is warm."
LOVE IT!
A funny read for everyone to enjoy!
I absolutely LOVE Loryn Brantz comics so to have them together in a book is just perfect. They are all so funny. Its impossible to read them and not laugh out loud.
Pros: colourful, cute and relatable.
Cons: there's nothing super original about it. Most of the stuff has been written before - either on Twitter or by Sarah Andersen.
Eh, I'm sorry, but cute and pointed women cartoonist are becoming so common that you almost trip over them every time you walk out the door. Just kidding. We need more women making comments about everyday life.
This is a good collection of Loryn's online comic. Too many jokes about makeup for me, because I don't and have never warn it, so that got boring pretty quickly. This is mainly aimed at young, girly young women who shave their legs, wear make up and date men. Unlike Sara Scribbles, who also talks about procrastinating, and things that any woman or any person can relate to, most of this is "lady stuff", and good for her for writing about it. It just is not as funny to me, at my age, in my 50s, as it might be to someone closer to the cartoonist age.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
This was a hilarious and completely ACCURATE collection! I wish there was more!
I spotted this book on Netgalley, I was really curious about it. It seemed like a book I would enjoy. It sounded a bit like Sarah Scribbles (and I love those).
And today I had the chance to read it and I just don't want to get enough. All of these comics are so relatable. I kept going AH! TRUTH or OMG, YES TO THE MAX! all the time. And yes, I was shouting that. RIP people near me. :P
Whether it is about PMS or how one feels when one gets home from a busy day or about hay fever, this girl will tell you all about it in fun, short comics. Sometimes one single illustration, sometimes a whole comic of multiple panels.
At times I wondered if she was me. I almost wanted to look over my shoulder to search for the camera. I guess we girls are pretty much the same with several things.
The book is split up in various sections. From Grooming and Habitat Maintenance to Mating Habits (so hilarious, that guacamole stuff) to Social Conduct and many other topics. I really loved that it was split up like this. Now when I have the book (because yes, I am going to buy it) I can just flip to sections when I need some relatable content (though I probably will end up reading the entire book). :)
I love the style of the comics, they are simple, but you can really tell what is going on in them. Also I love the colours.
All in all, I am fangirling about this book and I will recommend it to everyone (not only on here, but everywhere).
OMG ladies! Whatever you are doing stop. Take this graphic novel and read it.
This was hilariously awesome and soooooo relatable. I literally finished it within 30 minutes and laughed aloud through the whole read (I might have scared a bit my cats because they stared at me with the '' she's finally lost it'' expression...)
Loryn you are my spirit animal and I love you! Absolutely 1000% recommended to all girls, women out there.
Plus I loved the art work <3
Thank you!!
Extremely funny and relatable. I love it!!! Can't wait to have the actual book in my hands.
I expected a fun, quick read and what I got was even funnier than I expected. With insightful wittiness, I enjoyed it so much that I read it in one sitting and may even decide to head back to it when I need a laugh. I'd recommend it for any woman or those who spend plenty of time with them.
