Love. Love. Love! I absolutely fell in love with the Laird of the Black Isle--both the book and the man! Paula Quinn's novel had the right amount of passion, determination, and action in this Scottish romance. Both Lachlan and Mailie were likable characters, but when they were together, they became fantastic! This novel was well-written with just the right mix of characters, vivid descriptions, and an accurate depiction of the Scottish world.
This book was a lovely read that held me completely enthralled from beginning to end.
Paula Quinn happens to be one of my auto click authors when it comes to historical romance. I've loved each book in this series but never has the author written a more tortured hero than Lachlan MacKenzie or a more spirited heroine than Mailie MacGregor. I really felt bad for poor Lachlin, not just because of his tragic past, but because he was a good man whose desperation drove him to do something that was against his conscious. He was terribly torn about kidnapping Mailie although it turned out for the best. Paula Quinn's writing was richly descriptive with all of the feelings ..... good and bad. I also loved catching up with my favorites from previous books and getting an intriguing glimpse into Adam. I can't wait for his book now, but sad at the same time, because it means the end of my favorite outlaw highlanders.
As usual, Paula Quinn has written another wonderful book in the MacGregors saga. The romance was beautiful, the characters were vibrant and engaging, the story was riveting and it had a surprise that you really cannot see coming. It has some old favorites and also shines a light on our promising next hero. I can't say enough good things about this book, but I do give it my very highest recommendation to historical romance readers.
oh my god this book was amazing. I loved it from start to finish. Love the Macgregors and their fierce women. Mailie is no exception. She has a heart of gold and the stubbornness of a true scots. Lachlan is suffering from a broken spirit and a quest of hope. Mailie breaks down all of his barriers and shows him how to live again and tame the mighty dragon.
If tortured Scottish lairds are your catnip, this book is for you. This was my first Paula Quinn book and it won’t be my last. I was up until 2am reading because I couldn’t put it down.
Lachlan MacKenzie has isolated himself in his remote castle following the brutal murder of his wife and young daughter. He refuses to interact with his tenants and villagers and yet does nice things for them in the cloak of darkness. One day a messenger brings word to him that his young daughter, Annabel, is still alive. Annabel will be returned to him if he kidnaps beautiful and spirited Mailie MacGregor and delivers her to an evil laird who wishes to make Mallie his bride.
Lachlan kidnaps Mailie and takes her to his castle. He holds her there while he arranges to make the trade for his long lost daughter. But Mailie is not a compliant or complacent captive. She takes over and turns his world upside down. And soon her light is piercing the darkness of his soul and what’s a tortured laird to do? Does he save his daughter or the woman he has come to love?
Ms. Quinn is an excellent writer. The details in this book are exquisite. She does a great job of developing the secondary characters so that you come to care for them as much as the hero and heroine—even to the point that you are invested in what happens to Mailie’s dog.
I would highly recommend this book!
