This was a beautiful coming of age story. From page one all the way to the end, this beautiful tale shows you what it is to find yourself. This story is set in two different time periods, as you get to see who these women are and what shaped/shapes them. This beautifully written novel makes its way into your heart as you laugh, and cry over both these women. The cover is gorgeous and automatically pulls you in with wonder as you want to know more about these shoes and the pearls found within the box alongside them. The history in this novel is rich and you cant ell that a lot of love and dedication went into the research for this novel. 5 stars from me.
I loved both Clair's and Anne's stories - Clair's discovery of a world outside the debutante society she was accustomed to, and Anne finding her muse and where her home really was.
I wish there had been a stronger connection between the two women. I think there was a lot of potential for more development between them. The writing is good though, and I enjoyed the characters. It was a quick read which I needed to keep me motivated in my reading life.
I just couldn't finish this book. I felt like it was cheesy at times. The fact that one of the characters slept with a man she met minutes before was so bizarre to me that I couldn't go on. I am not posting a review on Amazon or Goodreads since I cannot give it at least a 3 star review.
This story took me on a ride that I am still not able to get off. I read like crazy after almost 40% of the book was done. I always like the stories set in older times , showing a different era and specially of the ladies who carve a path for themselves. We take some of the current choices for granted but such stories tell us to value them and to make best of the opportunity. That way, the parallel stories worked so well. And to have a peek into the mind and life of some beautiful artist was nice. The only part I did not like was of Clair's mother which I thought was too far fetched.
Jill G. Hall's book was a lovely, fun read. I fell in love with both Anne and Clair. It was like reading a modern day fairy tale
The book is enchanting, two stories about two women in different eras who each overcome obstacles to become the artists they were born to be. If you love, romance, humor, strong women and shoes, this is the book for you!
"To thine own self be true." This wise and well known saying is the underlying them for this book.
Entertaining and fun to read, this novel tells the story of a loving but overprotective father in the 1920's. He controls his young daughter's life.
This is half of the story which alternates with one of a fully liberated woman in the 2000's who has problems of her own to deal with.
The connection between them is The Silver Shoes. The two characters in the story have a terrible secret to which they want to keep the secret hidden for fear of being found out. Each one finds a way of reconciling and adjusting to their situations.
It is no wonder that they all eventually learn the importance of "...to thine own self be true."
Definitely a terrific read!
This was a wonderful read , Two worlds apart / past and present , the beautiful shoes described owned by Clair in the 20's and Anne present day , the story's the "shoes tells are of both women trying to find their place in the world , love , and the future they want to lead , loved this story , the Author is new to me , I will definitely be looking for more reads from her
This is a great concept for a story, Anne is struggling artist that takes on other jobs to continue her up and coming career as an artist.
Whilst visiting her boyfriend in New York Ann see's a beautiful antique pair of rhinestone shoes from a small shop. She must promise the shop owner to keep the shoe box which the shoes came in.
When looking at the shoes later on she find a pearl necklace and a photo in the box also, who are the 2 girls in the photo and did one of them own the shoes????
Also the story of Clair in the 1920's in New York with a controlling father, and also being brought up in the Waldof Hotel, Clair is planning her coming out ball as a debutant in society. Which then entails what is thought of Clair and her future.
The two stories are intertwined beautifully and really well written.
I totally fell in love with Clair and her story! A great tale the takes you back to the roaring twenties when women were beginning to truly change their own lives and gain the beginnings of their own power.
I enjoyed the characters and really loved alternating between most chapters. I felt some parts were too long or drawn out. Enjoyable story line. Thank you :)
An entertaining story about two young women. One is Claire an 18 year old six foot tall woman in 1929 New York, daughter of a financier who wants her to marry well just as the markets are about to fail. Claire hopes to study music at Julliard and is disinterested in her father's proposed suitor. Anne, is an artist in her 30s, working in collage and various mediums to create pieces that are just taking off in her adopted town of San Francisco. She must sort out her bicoastal relationship with Sergio, her serious boyfriend whose shoe business keeps his permanent residence in New York. Anne, a fan of vintage clothing, finds a pair of silver sequined dance shoes that fit her perfectly. A photo gives her some information about the shoes' original owner, Claire. The story of a period in each woman's life alternates in parallel lines of self-discovery and embracing the truths they learn.. I liked the characters, including the non-protagonists, very much. Even a little 1929 newsboy and a 2017 homeless woman, each with only a few pages total in the book are engaging and three dimensional. I enjoyed the writing, characters and storylines so well that I read this in one sitting and then -- I found one ending too clipped. Each woman's ultimate resolution made sense, but it felt like for each, in particular Anne, it was a little rushed. It made sense for her to get to the point she did, but that ending required a few more pages or even another chapter to make it ring true. This was a minor flaw and did not affect my overall recommendation and rating of this book.
The first thing that attracted me to this book was the cover. The shoes on the cover are just beautiful. This book is about a girl, Anne, who sees a pair of silver shoes in the window of an antique shop and when she gets them home, she finds a pearl necklace in the box with the shoes. The other story is about a girl named Claire who owned the shoes back in the 1920's. It is a beautifully written story about these 2 women's lives and how they connect to the silver shoes. I really really enjoyed this book!! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Independent Book Publishers through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
“Now she gathered up the box of found objects…...She couldn’t wait to share them with her students.” I believe the book from chapter one to the last page is about finding yourself. It is about reaching back into the past to find the essence of who you are and of pulling into the future to take all the essence and create what a life looks like. In the end you a thing of beauty, much like the collages Anne creates. The Silver Shoes by Jill Hall is an enjoyable journey and front row seat to the theater of Anne McFarland’s and Claire Devereaux’s walk to find what makes them fly. The characters are approachable and likable. Anne, a mid west girl, strikes out to develop her art of collage and Claire steps out in rhythm to find her passion. Separated by decades and geographical locations, the two women's’ stories are woven into a delightful tapestry of a “coming of age” story. I found a kindred spirit in both girls for different reasons. I love Anne’s enjoyment of thrift, vintage and treasure hunts. I, also, loved the beauty, sophistication and lifestyle of the glamorous Claire. It is also about not taking the “easy” way in life and forgetting who you are and what you want out of your time on this earth.
I thank my friends at Netgalley for the ability to read this in exchange for my honest review.
