When I want a fun to read romance I turn to Entangled Teen and this is by far one of my favorite reads from Entangled Teen! This story was much more than I thought it would be, including friendship, mystery, romance, betrayal, great pop culture references, and of course spies, lies and allies! I loved the way the story was written and the premise of Laurel working for the summer at her father's office, Emergent Enterprises, as an assistant to the interns who are all vying for a $100,000 scholarship. There were so many levels to the story, including the relationships that Laurel forms with the interns, the romance and her relationship with her own father. The mystery was great and the story was just a good read all around. I finished it and was glad that I read it because it really kept my interest due to the many different topics that were touched on. Well done and looking forward to reading more by this author. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
Like with all the other Entangled books I’ve read before, this one did not disappoint, and was a really fun contemporary story. In Spies, Lies, and Allies, Laurel is desperate to spend more time with her workaholic father, and the only way she can do, is by begging to be allowed to join the internships taking place at his company, Emergent Enterprises. When he finally relents, she finds herself playing assistant to the 5 interns, 4 of which are in it to win a full ride to a college of their choice. As their assistant, and the daughter of their boss, she is there as both a friend, but also a spy to help the company decide just who deserves the coveted prize. As she spends more time with them, she realises she can’t be in charge of their lives, especially as she grows closer and closer to them all, particularly Carlos.
First of all, I loved all the main-ish characters in the book. Laurel was a such a nerd, especially when it comes to Star Wars, and I loved all the different references that were woven into the story. From the first page, Laurel was someone I could really relate to, and though she wasn’t perfect, and could be judgemental at times, she was human, and realised her own flaws. The other interns all had their own stories, and though I was apprehensive about a few in the beginning, I grew to love them all by the end. Firstly we have Jason, who Laurel goes to school with, and has had a crush on him for ages - even though he always gets her name wrong. Next there’s Ashley, who Laurel first thought was a ‘barbie’ type character, but was actually really caring and intelligent, and had to overcome the stereotypes due to her appearance. Another intern was Elijah, who, just like Laurel, was a massive nerd, and became her closest ally and friend in the story, because they just get each other. One who really got on my nerves in the beginning was Trish, the daughter of Mr Mantoni (who works at the company, and is in charge of the intern programme). At first, Trish was extremely abrasive, and took offense at just about everything, but as you learnt more about her, you realised why she had such an air about her, and I grew to love her. Finally, there’s Carlos, whose family own a restaurant, and he’s in the programme to gain some knowledge to help the restaurant flourish. Laurel immediately has an attraction to him, but there’s a major rule against any sort of workplace romance.
I loved the plot of the story, as it really revolved around getting to know the characters, but also learning about Mr Kristoff's company. There's also a lot of intrigue, and a bit of a mystery that takes place, with the intern gang - who've sort of designated themselves as a new Breakfast Club - working together to find out who's trolling the company online, as well as vying for the coveted scholarship.
The romance between Laurel and Carlos was really sweet, and though it was extremely slow burn, the tension and chemistry jumped off the page. Because of the rule against fraternisation, lest Carlos be thrown out of the scholarship competition, they couldn't really do anything until the internship was over with. When it did end, though - and I loved the ending of the internship and the competition - the sparks were too much to contain, and I couldn't stop myself from smiling.
If you're after a cute contemporary read for the summer, and want one that has a wide variety of cast, and extremely enjoyable plot, then Spies, Lies, and Allies is a book for you.
I really enjoyed reading this book! Friendship, conspiracies, enemies, allies, spies, romance... I liked it! And I liked all the characters too. Even though maybe not from the start. But they were all good characters. And made the story interesting.
Engaging characters, well writing and an interesting plot with a nice romance. This was my first time reading this author’s work but I can't wait to read more. I would highly recommended it.
Laurel wants to spend more time with her dad, so she convinces him to allow her to work at his business, Emergent Enterprises, for the summer. She wants to help out with the new intern program. There are multiple candidates all fighting to win a $100, 000 scholarship for college.
Laurel is a big nerd and loves Star Wars. There are a lot of references and since I'm not a big fan, I honestly didn't get them all. But I think Star Wars lovers will enjoy those throughout the book. There is a lot of geeky fun in this book, including comic con.
At first, Laurel isn't sure what to think of the interns. There is Jason, a boy she had a huge crush on for years. He's a jock and can't remember her name. Ashley is beautiful and well put together. Elijah ended up being one of my favorite characters in the book. He signs up because he wants to work with minority owned businesses and he's a secret geek. Trish is Mr. Mantoni's daughter. Mr. Mantoni works for Laurel's dad, Mr. Kristoff. Trish is a bit scary, has her own style, and is a feminist. I actually loved her character, too. Carlos is the last intern. He has a large family that owns a Mexican restaurant. Laurel thinks that she'll just be helping them out, but Mr. Mantoni surprises her by stating that Laurel will be reporting any violations or problems she sees. She basically has to tattle on them.
Laurel gets to know each candidate and realizes that they aren't who she thought right away. Over time, she starts to grow close to them and they all become friends. But there is someone at the company trying to sabotage things and ruin the internship. Some of the kids decide to figure out who it is. Laurel also finds herself having feelings for Carlos. I'll admit that Carlos isn't my favorite. There was just something about him that I didn't like as much as the others.
This was a fun read and I really loved a few of the characters. I also loved how Laurel started to understand her dad a bit more and realized a lot about herself along the way. The photography was an added bonus and I thought it added to the story.
I gave this one 4 stars. Thank you to Entangled for sending me this book through Netgalley to review.
I received a copy of SPIES, LIES, AND ALLIES: A LOVE STORY on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the publisher and author.
Five stars and here's why:
Lisa Brown Roberts had me by the title! SPIES, LIES, AND ALLIES: A LOVE STORY - I love a good spy story full of conflict and teenage love angst! But seriously. Ms. Roberts wrote a hella-awesome, story with just the right amount of steam and sass and diversity and geek references to keep me turning the pages for more.
When Laurel and Carlos and a host of other determined teens spend the summer working for her dad’s company and competing for a major college scholarship, sparks fly, inhibitions crumble, and what’s left is me with a major book hangover. Simply devoured this story in one day. If you love sexy guys, savvy girls, and a sassy romance, then this book is for you! Highly recommend!
NB: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author!
I really enjoyed this novel. I have always loved Entangled, because I'm a major sucker for a soppy love story. I really loved the way that they set this novel - in a slightly different manner. I loved that it was set in a corporate environment, even though sometimes it may have been a bit unrealistic.
I looooooved Carlos, even when he was being a bit of a jerk at times....
Overall, possibly one of my favourite novels I've had to review yet!
Cute and funny. A lovely story about friendship and romance.
The book is about Laurel, a teenager working in her dad’s company, a place nothing like she expected but, where she would discover the true meaning of teamwork.
I enjoyed the reading. The narrative is good, and I can overlook some telling and repetitions because of the mention of wonderful movies that I love.
I liked the concept and definitely, the author has a wide acknowledge of teenager’s world. The pace, characters, dialogues, and descriptions are great in most parts of the book. However, being honest, I had a hard time going through the first 20%. It wasn’t about the pace or the narrative, it was about the main character’s motivations and the settling of the story, I don’t think it was as strong as the rest of the book.
My other problem is the protagonist. She is so insecure and the weakest character in the story. This is my third book by the author and I found the same issue in her other books. However, I’ll keep reading Lisa Brown’s stories, I believe she can write a strong female lead.
Despite the protagonist and the first 20% of the story. This book deserves four stars and I 100% recommended.
I received an ARC from Entangled Publishing, LLC. Through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. And I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the first book I have read by Lisa Brown Roberts. The story is filled with "geeky references" from Star Wars to Harry Potter that readers will either love for hate. At times the reference were just a bit too much and started to bog down the story. With the one liners that bogged down the story it didn't really start to pick up until half way though. Which is why Spies, Lies, and Allies by Lisa Brown Roberts gets 4 stars instead of 3.
The characters start to come to life with a friendship and romance that readers will enjoy. The story is cheese, sweet and fun read that readers will be able to read sitting by the pool soaking up the sun.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Entangled: Teen for the advance copy of Lisa Brown Roberts Spies, Lies, and Allies
4.5 Stars.
If you like sweet romance and Star Wars, this book is for you.
Super quick read, with adorable characters and lots of geeky references. Almost, but not quite to overload.
Minor quibble that the plot/villain was a bit bland and anticlimatic, but I was there for the romance, which absolutely delivered.
I received Spies, Lies, and Allies by Lisa Brown Roberts from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, but that has no impact on my thoughts.
As a whole, I thought Spies, Lies, and Allies was a strong 3 and a half stars which means I did like the book, but it didn’t quite have the REALLY liked it star rating. I stuck around with the book because I appreciated all of the Star Wars references in the book, and some of the Harry Potter ones that were made. My favorite one was when all of the interns met each other and Laurel tried to remind Jason how they knew each other.
I liked how all of the characters bonded throughout the book.
The thing that didn’t make me REALLY like the book was the slow plot. The pacing took awhile to pick up, but around 40 percent after the truth or dare scene was when I decided to stick it out because the characters made up for that slow bit. I’ll definitely miss them now that the book is over.
When I first read about the book, I thought the book would be about all about spies, but it turned out that it wasn’t. It was just about the daughter going to work with her dad and keeping an eye on his interns to decide who would get the full ride scholarship. I really liked that Trish and Laurel were able to become friends in the end too.
Overall, Spies, Lies and Allies was a strong 3 and a half star rating for me. Thank you Netgalley for giving me the chance to read it!
I personally did not like this book overall. The main character as always has to be a pushover, letting everyone say what they want to her and thinking if she spoke up no one would like her. This book is pretty mediocre. The only character I did like was the love interest because he seemed real. Overall I like my YA girls to have a backbone and to have more substance.
