I didn't finish this book because it wasn't the right one for me, it couldn't quite catch my attention, I wasn't too interested in the characters, that were a bit plain to me (and not my kind of characters, since all three of them are the kind of characters that carry the weight of the world on their shoulder. I am not a fan of this kind of character, and here we have an abundance of them, so just not my thing), and I wasn't so interested in the story, even if, from time to time, it was intriguing. But not enough to keep my attention.
Sorry
This is definitely a new favorite in my guilty pleasure genre of paranormal romance. I love a strong, yet vulnerable female protagonist. Even more, I love the supernatural elements and the mystery woven into the paranormal plot. I'm so happy this is the first in a series!
What can I say, it was paranormal romance book. it wasn't bad but it wasn't outstanding either. But it did keep my attention. I would read more by Lina Gardiner.
I really enjoyed discovering this author and reading her book. Great characters and storyline. Highly recommend!
I received this via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved it guys. This book was just what I wanted It to be. The world building was fun. The characters were very well flushed out. I loved the plot of this. I can not wait to read more by this author. I highly recommend this book.
This review isn't going to be long. I'm not a huge fan of a review rehashing the entire plot and spoiling it for everyone.
This is the first book by Lina Gardiner that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was a riviting story. I Ihave now purchased 3 books by this author.
I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
Graves of Wrath was a first by this author for me and I’m on the fence about this book. It is the start of a new series, but I feel like since I didn’t read her previous series I was a little lost. I think if there would have been more backstory given in the first chapter or two that I wouldn’t have been so lost at first. That being said it has a good storyline. Jess is a vampire killer/slayer who is very much in love with an angel named Britt. Jess and Britt, both work In the Vampire Hunting unit together in New York. I would recommend reading the previous series so your not lost. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc.
Jess Vandermire is the captain of the New York City’s Vampire Hunting Team. She finds out that her brother a priest, Regent has gone to Paris by request of the Vatican. Jess is upset as she fears for Regent’s life due to vampire retribution. Why? Jess and her partner John Brittain decide to go to Paris on “vacation” so they can be backup for him. Jess and John discover that shadows are killing people. How? Why?
An exquisitely written story about more than vampires. It is a paranormal novel. I liked the mystery that is problematic to solve. As I read this novel, I found myself wanting answers to what little the characters knew. I can’t wait to read the next book in this new series!
The cover of this book drew my attention and the premise sounded promising, yet I had a difficult time getting into the story. I was unable to really connect with the characters or follow the storyline. There was so much information given on almost every page, it kind of felt more like a book report rather than adventure unfolding, it was just hard to follow and stay engaged. Even though this is the first in a new series by the author, it seems to be a continuation of adventures for Jess and her partner Britt from her Jess Vandermire, Vampire Hunter series. This book references several things from that series, which I have not read, so maybe that is why I felt so disconnected from this story. Perhaps if that series is read first, this new one would make more sense and be more enjoyable. There was so much I did not understand and when information was presented it felt choppy and sometimes like more information or description was given than was necessary making it hard to follow along. I will also say that even though I struggled with this read, it did make me curious about the characters and interested enough to want to go back and start the Vampire Hunter series to see what all I have missed. I did enjoy the main characters, Jess, Britt and her brother Regent, detested Moriana, and would not mind learning about them from the beginning of the author’s other series. Also, be forewarned, there are a lot of dropped scenes and unanswered questions and the story ends on a cliff-hanger. I am guessing more will be revealed and explained in the next book in the series.
*I received an advanced copy from the publisher, via NetGalley and am leaving my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are solely my own.
I received an advanced reader's copy of Graves of Wrath by Lina Gardiner from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was the first novel by Lina Gardiner that I have read and it was just "meh." Overall, this novel missed the mark for me. I thought the writing was alright and the plot should have been interesting given the summary, but it just didn't hook me and I wasn't hooked by the plot or characters.
I'd give Graves of Wrath 2.75 stars.
Graves of Wrath by Lina Gardiner is the 5th book of the Vampire Hunter series and the 1st book of the City of Bones series. I am not familiar with her work and I felt that I missed some information that was explained most likely in the Vampire Hunter series. Graves of Wrath did give tidbits of information through out to to help the reader who may not have the read previous series. But for me I found it a lacking. For example the book explained that Regent is Jess's younger brother is 73 years old. But in the Vampire Hunter series something happened and now looks middle aged. So how old is Jess?
Regent who is Jess's brother is sent to France. Jess and Britt follow him there and together try to find a way to stop shadows that are taking over. I am very interested to see how Morana plays a roll in this series. I have a feeling that Diesel may be part of the series also. Without giving to much away Britt learns of new skill at the end when help defeating the shadows.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to friends and family.
I enjoyed this book. It was very much fantasy, but I've always enjoyed the characters. Jess is trying to protect Regent, like always and the wraiths are taking over Paris.
This was an action packed book, but it took a lot of luck and a turning of a key character to make everything turn out just so. It'll be interesting how the next book goes and with Regent convincing the Vatican that he can handle this kind of threat, there is no limit to where and what he can do. As far as Jess and Britt? They cut it pretty close several times. The scene at the church was a little sketchy and the boat and with her twin? Pretty much all of their encounters were skin of their teeth, but the story was still enjoyable.
Are you the darkness that everyone should be scared about? Jess knows that she should feel better about herself but being a vampire has many side effects. She is lucky to have a loving brother Regent who happens to be a priest, a cop boyfriend Britt who fights along side her as a vampire hunter but she still doesn't feel like she deserves this life. She worries about Regent as the Church has sent him to Paris but they don't know the real reason so Jess & Britt decide to take a vacation and visit him. But there is something wrong in Paris a evil that wants to take it over. Will they be able to stop the shadows from killing everyone? They need to work with the police on this but Jess doesn't know if she can really trust them. And now that it seems like she could be a twin to a sister they never knew about but she can't trust this woman too much doesn't add up. Can they find out the truth about their real parents and how this woman became a vampire as well? Can Regent be able to work out a way to save the city before it is too late? Can Britt save the woman that he loves from certain death again? A really good read. Love the characters especially Jess. She is a strong woman but she is still vulnerable to human traits she hasn't lost all her humanity no matter what she thinks. I really do hope that Britt can find a way to save her for good. His powers are growing and he is becoming the very being that he is meant to be. Don't know how their future will work out but I can hope for the best. Regent only wants the best for his sister but I do fear that he is too vulnerable to people and what people's true intentions are. Can't wait to read the next book. I was lucky enough to receive a copy via Netgalley and the publishing house in exchange for my honest review.
Jess Vandermire is on a mission. That is to protect her brother. So when Regent is sent to Paris on a three-month assignment, she can't help but follow him. You better believe that where Jess goes, Britt is sure to follow.
Jess and Britt are glad they followed Regent to Paris, because things are not as the seem and they quickly learn that danger is lurking in the city. Regent is tired looking and seems a bit off, the church is keeping big secrets, they run into another vampire who could be Jess's twin and dangerous shadows are lurking everywhere. Can the trio figure out what is happening before it is too late?
This is the first book in the series City of Bones. This is a spin-off from the Jess Vandermire series by Lina Gardiner. Considering I have not read the original series, this first book felt like it was missing pieces of the puzzle. At first I could not figure out that Jess indeed was a vampire, or why her brother was reverted to his youth. I was a bit lost and confused at first. Still feel as if I am missing chunks of the characters back grounds.
Overall the book was pretty good, with tons of action and mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat. The story plot line was unique, even though the story felt a bit jumpy at times. The characters are exciting, but I felt like we were missing too much of their backstories. The book ended nicely, but there were things that went unresolved. Leaving the reader wondering ?? well what was that all about ?? Maybe these things will be revealed in the next books. We will have to wait and see.
If you love paranormal reads, then you may want to check this book out. But my suggestion is read the original series first. Maybe that will fill in the gaps of this book.
This was an excellent book in a new series but I deducted a star because I was a bit lost on a few things mostly involving timelines of events. I heard that it's a spin-off of another series so maybe that was the problem and it'll make sense if you have read the other series but as I haven't, it confused me. Since there were several references to events I was unfamiliar with like a year ago, the main character Jess' baby brother who was 73 was kidnapped by the Church (btw, he's a priest) and regressed to his mid-forties while Jess looks the 29 years she apparently was when she was bitten. Okay, I can sort of follow that. But when you throw in him saving part of her soul when she was turned by Uriel as they were trying to save him from vampirism and that Uriel told her that she can't tell her boyfriend things (btw, she recruited him four years ago), I was truly lost. Did she turn vampire at age 29 before she met her soulmate? Has she been a vampire for 50 some years? Totally lost.
By no means are these spoilers to the story either. This is the background information you're given and is referenced many times.
I did love the book though and the writing style was incredible. I read it in one sitting. It was fairly fast-paced. The characters were interesting. The suspense grew as you got toward the end. Honestly, I think I've found a new writer to follow but I think I'm definitely going to have to go find the other series and read it before I take on book 2 in this series.
Thank you to Lina Gardiner, Bell Bridge Books, ImaJinn Books, and NetGalley for allowing me to read this story and share my thoughts and opinions with others.
Was a good story with an unexpected ending. I'm looking forward to the next story. The heroine is not your run of the mill vampire...especially with an angel for her boyfriend and a Catholic priest for a brother. Add in an identical twin who also happens to be a vampire and the stories have lots of potential!
This is book 1 in a new paranormal series (City of Bones) . The characters are all carry overs from the Jess Vandermire series by Lina Gardiner. Jess is a vampire killer and is deeply in love with Britt, an angel. They work for the New York City Police Department Special Vampire Hunting Unit. Jess's brother, Regent is a priest who has been sent to Paris on special assignment. I think a little more background in the first couple of chapters would have been helpful. I didn't read any of Lina Gardiner's previous series and it took a few pages to figure out what was happening. Most of the book is set in Paris fighting evil demons. Will probably look for book 2 now that I know what to expect. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This wasn't my usual type of book but I liked it all the same. It had a kickass heroine and it had some humorous times in it. Would I read something by this author again? Yes, I think I would. I enjoyed the storyline that much that I have to say that I would give the next book a chance. There were some grammar and editing issues but I overlooked them and they weren't so bad that it sucked my soul out (see what I did there?) Anyhow, if you've never read this author - you should pick this up and try it...because it would be good for a trip or on a weekend when you have nothing better to do but read and to suspend belief.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Bell Bridge/Imajinn Books for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. First time reading this author. I knew it was a risk as this is book 5 but also book 1 in a new series set in Paris. All the characters are known so no real descriptions. I found this to be frustrating as I didn't have the background knowledge. So for me it didn't read well as a stand alone. I sort of didn't get Jess's vampirism. Seemed sometimes she could tolerate sun but not others?? I couldn't connect with the characters. I give this a 3.
