Rose Troyer, a widow, has returned home to Paradise, Pennsylvania to the old family farm with her son, Daniel. Rose is happy to once again be near her twin sister, Lillian. Rose still misses her husband, Sam and hopes being back among familiar things will help her. The farm has been neglected since their father passed away and needs work. Lillian hired Luke Miller to assist Rose with the running of the farm. Luke came to Paradise to assist his cousin, Abraham, and his family after a buggy accident. He likes the area and wishes to remain. Luke is attracted to Rose, but he can tell that she still misses her husband. He is willing to be patient and wait for her to be ready for a second love. Rose find look appealing Luke, but she is not willing to admit it yet. There is a secret that she is carrying, and Rose does not know how Luke will handle the news. Buried Secrets by Barbara Cameron is the second novel in Harvest of Hope series. It can be read as a standalone, but I do recommend reading Seeds of Hope. I thought Buried Secrets was well-written with realistic, developed characters. The pacing is slower than I prefer. I liked the symbolism of red cardinal and how he functioned as a guardian angel (of sorts). Rose’s secret is a mystery in the book. I like how it played out. There are clues given along the way, so it is not a surprise when it is finally revealed. The romance is sweet. I like the interactions between Luke and Daniel. Daniel is a sweet boy is full of energy. Buried Secrets is a pleasant story that is a delightful way to spend a rainy or snowy afternoon. I am looking forward to reading Summer’s Promise which is the third book in Harvest of Hope series. Buried Secrets is a heartwarming Amish tale with busy boys, a faded farm, close sisters, a caring community, and a second chance romance.
One book that will have your rooting for both characters. Can both overcome there past and the secrets they may be keeping to find true love together
Second chance romance is my favourite trope, and it's wonderful to find an author who can both write it well - and research a community well enough to convince me.
Book feature to appear on my blog in August: https://sonyaheaneyblog.com/
I have read several books by Barbara Cameron over the years. I see her writting getting better with each book. I love the sweet, clean, romance, the tenderness of the characters. If you like Amish fiction or a good romance, try this one. You will not regret it. Thanks netgalley for the gift of the arc. The opinions are my own.
The story is about a young widow named Rose who moves back home to be close to her twin sister Lillian. Rose has a young son who she fears losing and struggles with giving him to God.
Luke Miller is a young man who moves to Paradise to help his cousin after an accident. He decides to stay in Paradise and help Rose manage her farm. The two start to develop feelings for each other.
Problem is both Rose and Luke have secrets, ones that just might keep them from having a future together.
Amish widow, Rose, has returned home to Pennsylvania with her son, Daniel, to bring her family's derelict farm back to life and to find a new direction for her life as a young widow and mother. Her twin sister has hired, Luke, an Amish young man, who is also looking for a new start in Pennsylvania to help her sister redevelop the farm. But both Rose and Luke are harboring secrets that may keep them from developing a relationship as they work together.
I enjoyed this book more than most Amish reads as it had enough twists and turns in the plot to keep it from feeling formulaic. The storyline was well developed and the characters were complex and interesting. Even though it had a gentle pace it fit well with the Amish lifestyle. The secrets that both Rose and Luke were hiding definitely added a bit of a hitch to the smooth development of their relationship, but I liked how they worked out each of their temporary setbacks. The use of the cardinal thread throughout was very endearing and well incorporated.
I really enjoy Amish fiction because it seems I learn something about myself every time I read about the lifestyle and faith of the Amish people. I could feel Rose’s heartache every time the loneliness of losing her husband would overcome her as she was going about her daily life and thanking God that she still has her 5 year old son, Daniel to hold close to her heart. And it’s obvious right from their meeting that Luke’s life changes for the better when he starts working on Rose’s farm and spends time with her and little Daniel. It’s easy to see why Rose and Luke will make a good pair, especially the delightful way Luke interacts with Daniel as he teaches him the things his father would if he was still alive. My only criticism is the frustration I felt with the repetition of Rose’s thoughts and Luke’s thoughts and the fact that much of the interaction between these two characters takes place in Rose’s kitchen during meals. It seems to me that an experienced author could have found other entertaining ways for these characters to interact that would have made this a five star read. I read an early copy of this book from Gilead Publishing through NetGalley and all opinions expressed in my voluntary review are completely my own.
I loved Buried Secrets. So well written. This author is new to me and I throughly enjoyed her writing. I definitely will be checking out the other books in this series. If you are a fan of inspirational romance and second chances at love this book is for you.
Barbara Cameron is the author of “Buried Secrets”, the second book in the Harvest of Hope series. I read and reviewed the first novel in the series and was anxious to continue the series with “Buried Secrets”.
After Rose’s husband dies, she and her young son moved back to Paradise, Pennsylvania to be near her twin sister, Lillian, and to move into the family farm. Although she is a farm wife, there is no way that she can continue to run the farm single-handedly. Her sister recommends hiring Luke Miller, a newcomer to the community. They form a partnership of sorts with him doing the hard farm work and she providing meals. They are attracted to one another, but each one has secrets that could threaten their future together.
Rose feels that any romantic notions for another man, is cheating on the memory of her husband and there is another secret that is more threatening. Luke has a secret that may make Rose hesitant to pursue their relationship. I enjoyed, for the most part, the on again-off again aspects of their lives on the farm, but it soon became wearisome. When each one’s secrets are revealed, I felt a sense let down on the part of Luke’s, but a total disbelief with Rose’s. I could not comprehend any of it. This really influenced my review of this book. The ending of this novel just wasn’t something that I could put my head around. Hopefully the next book of the series will be different. I felt that Ms. Cameron was grasping for a substantial set of secrets that would add more enthusiasm to the novel.
I received a complimentary print copy of this book from Gilead Publishers. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Buried Secrets is a sweet romance that builds over several months. This slow romance is one to be savored. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Net Gallery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. Rose, an Amish widow, has returned to take over the family farm. With her sister's advice, she hires Luke to help work the farm. For Rose, it starts with a friendship. Rose is still grieving her husband and isn't thinking of romance. For Luke, it is love at first sight for Rose and her son Daniel. I loved Rose's son Daniel, who is so full of life and love. Luke is a sweet and gentle man who gives Rose his support. Overall for me, this is a story of relationships: Rose with her twin sister, Rose with her son Daniel. Luke with his cousin, and especially the friendship and romance of Rose and Luke. I enjoyed reading this book very much.
Family secrets could get in the way of a second chance at love
After her husband dies, Rose longs to be near her family—especially her twin sister, Lillian—so she packs up her young son and leaves their life in Ohio to move back to Paradise, Pennsylvania.
Luke Miller is ready to settle down in Paradise. He soon forms a partnership with Rose to help farm her land. He finds that he’s enjoying the company of the quiet, modest widow and she may be just the woman he’s been waiting for. But is Rose hiding a secret beneath her reserved exterior—one that could keep her from having a future with Luke?
And Rose isn’t the only one concealing something. Luke has a secret of his own, and it could threaten their partnership—and their chance at love.
Good quality Amish fiction novel by Barbara Cameron. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre.
Buried Secrets Is a precious story. It is an absolute joy to read. The siblings are very affectionate to each other - meaning they care for each other very much and they take care of each other as well. Rose has had a major loss twice over but she is still big hearted. Daniel helps her do that - who is Daniel? You have to find out for yourself - it is worth it. Lillian also is keeping her grounded and upbeat - she is also playing match maker - is she successful? The one thing that she does do is she trusts and loves one man - who? GOD, that's who - and HE will guide her every step.
This is the second book of the series but can be enjoyed as a stand alone. This is a sweet story about a young Amish woman, Rose. After the death of her husband she moves back home to be close to family. Her special bond with her twin sister is very moving. Rose hires Luke to help run the farm as she struggles to make a new life for her son and herself. I really liked Luke since he was so thoughtful and considerate. This was an easy novel to read and love. I look forward to the next one in the series and will have to read the first book to find out more about Luke. Highly recommended!
This is the first book I've read by Barbara Cameron, but it won't be the last. This is a very well written book about learning to love again after the death of your spouse. Thank you NetGalley and Gilead Publishing for introducing me to this wonderful author. Don't pass this book up, it is time well spent reading it.
After the death of her husband Rose returns to the old family farm with her 4 year old son. Luke gets offered a chance to help her with the farm-work, and becomes her helper and friend. Needless to say it eventually becomes more. Overall I enjoyed the book, and the the characters were interesting. I got a little tired of her excuses though, and her anger at him at the end was a little over the top. Other than that though, I would highly recommend this book and author.
