Thank you Quatro and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for my honest review best review.
I was interested in this book as I purchased a lovely set of pencils a few years ago and unfortunately they have seemed to be defined for my drawer much of the time since.
This is a lovely book that has inspired me to dig the pencils out and enjoy them finally.
I particularly enjoyed reading about colour and learning different techniques. Thank you for inspiring my creativity to come out.
Well recommended.
Thank you, NetGalley for the preview of this ARC.
Colouring Pencils have always been one of my favourite medium of choice. This book helps amateur artists take with their techniques with the useful step-by-step instructions provided by the author. Very useful and I highly recommend.
I really like colored pencils. I like the control and precision of being able to get color into a small space with the tip of the pencil. However, my least favorite thing about colored pencils is that they don't blend into each other. But I still enjoy this art medium and find myself pulling my colored pencils more frequently than almost anything else. So when I saw Anywhere, Anytime Art: Colored Pencil I was really looking forward to getting some tips and tricks that I didn't already have (because I'm seriously an amateur artist).
It didn't take me long before I began to question the credentials of the author of this book. I mean I hate to say that. My feelings toward this book strike up the saying that my mom used to say to me when I was a kid. "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." But as a reviewer I need to give my thoughts on a book even if they are "negative." Perhaps the quality of the illustrations in this book is due to the author's "style". I mean she labels herself an illustrator and not a photo-realist. However, I really found myself thinking that I--even with my non-existent art training--could draw at least just as well as this author if not better in some instances. Others she definitely has me beat. Here, let me include a page from the section on drawing your pets to prove my point:
(see blog post linked)
I mean seriously? How did this end up in a published book teaching art techniques? I'm sorry, but the illustration stands for itself. Like I said, I could do work that good. I mean maybe that's the point? To appeal to the amateur? Saying "hey, even you can do this?" But even if I don't yet want to review an art book that leaves me feeling like I could never achieve the results the book is trying to teach, I also really don't want to feel like I can already achieve what the book is trying to teach without even trying or learning something new. One of my biggest pet peeves was the lack of straight lines. I mean sometimes even seasoned and experienced artists just need to use a ruler. I continued reading simply because it was an easy and fast read.
As much as I hate to say all of this, Anywhere, Anytime Art: Colored Pencil was a real disappointment. For me, this book gets 2 Stars. Have you read Anywhere, Anytime Art: Colored Pencil? What did you think? Let me know!
An inspirational book bursting with colour, lovely illustrations and easy projects to try. It is perfect for children and beginner adults. The step by step drawings are easy to follow and the level of information and instruction is pitched just right. I loved just flicking through the pictures, and every time I open it I am itching to have a go at one of the projects. Overall a brilliant little book
Thank you to Net Galley and Quatro Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book. The following is my honest review.
I'm not sure what to think about this one. The written bits are great. Very easy to understand, but the accompanying art, even in the step by step, was not great. Especially the portraits. They all look like beginner children's drawings. I was confused. The last few drawings in the book showing examples of color pencils used with other mediums were suddenly much better.
So I ended up finding Cara Hanley's online portfolio. The art she has there is really adorable. All I can think is that when trying to break her style down to tutorials for beginners, something was lost in the translation.
As it stands I would not recommend this book. There are so many other really great colored pencil books out there I would recommend instead.
How to use and enjoy colored pencils anywhere, starting with the basics. Basic coloring techniques, color theory, drawing techniques, and exercises are all covered.
All these techniques are covered in such a way that any age or skill level could learn to draw with color. I love how she breaks down each of the drawing exercises to the simplest of form, making it easy to follow along. At the end of the book she also introduces multimedia to broaden your talents.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
This book is aptly subtitled, "A Playful Guide to Drawing with Colored Pencil On the Go!" The design and layout of the book, from its illustrations to font choices, conveys playfulness. The illustrations are very relatable to fledgling artists. Cara Hanley's tone is encouraging and supportive as she guides readers through step-by-step instructions about how to draw objects and subjects from everyday life. This reader-friendly book is a great choice for someone of any age who would like to explore drawing with colored pencils.
This skillfully created book on how to draw with colored pencils is simple enough that even my clumsy hands could produce something beautiful. The perfect inspiration needed for someone interested in drawing.
Another one I couldn’t get to download on my kindle fire or my iPad so I can’t give a review which really bums me out
I don't know if I just need a break from art book or what, but this is another "It's okay" title when I am looking for "It's amazing".
While it's nothing special enough to stand out in this overcrowded genre, it is a decent enough book. If you're just starting out with color pencils, it's a good start for tips on how to use them, how to draw with them, how to color and shade with them, etc. It's mostly simple'ish step by step how to draw and color with your colored pencils kind of projects. Fruit, squirrels, your own face (okay that one isn't step-by-step and isn't simple), etc.
Personally, I'd go with a more comprehensive book if you want to master color pencils. If you're just starting out and aren't even sure you like them and just need some tips for getting started? This book is fine for that.
When we're at school we use coloured pencils all the time. When we leave we tend to leave them in a drawer. This lovely little book enthuses about how easy it is, with a little equipment, to draw anywhere, anytime. You are guided step by step through each example drawing. I particularly like the bicycle drawing guide. It definitely made me want to give it a go. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC.

“Anywhere, Anytime Art: Colored Pencil” has inspired me to buy a set of pencils in gorgeous hues so I can do the many fun exercises in this beautiful book. Illustrator superstar Cara Hanley offers such simple steps for drawing everyday things in life that I know I can follow suit with grace. Highly highly recommended!
Thanks to the author, Quarto Publishing Group - Walter Foster, and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are fully mine.

Step by step guides about how to use colouring pencils. The guides are easy enough for childen to follow and mature their skills using one of the earliest art gifts most people get, yet also in depth enough to expand adult skills to use the artform to it's full potential. Well worth a look for all ages.
Very informative and interesting ways to learn, I would recommend this if you want to try out colour pencil as its got a lot of good tips for learning, some of it seemed a little to simple for my taste but I think its worth having in your collection.
This book encourages you to pack up your coloured pencils and get outside to create art - but I do think that this book would be just as useful even if you were bed-ridden!
Hanley covers the basics – the materials needed, drawing methods, how to show light and shade. There are lovely little step-by-step tutorials, including, (at random) a potted cactus, an armchair and a pug.
The illustrations are delightful and have their own, not necessarily realistic, style. I like to imagine Hanley out and about , in cafes and parks, with her rucksack at her side, sketching a colourful scene. Perhaps I could do that too?
Which is what, I think, a good how-to book should do – inspire you into having a go. And as soon as I have a little time, I think I’ll try one of the step-by-steps. Today, a cactus in a pot; tomorrow, Kew botanical Gardens!
I'm sorry to say that I didn't enjoy this book. I found the author's drawing style unappealing, so it was difficult for me to want to learn what she was teaching. Technical perfection is not what I'm seeking, but I can't help but feel that the author's drawing is unpolished. I'd like to see a little more sophistication in a teaching manual (wheels that are actually circular, for example, and not lumpen messes). I don't want to draw like her, so it was difficult for me to force myself to pay attention to her instructions.
The tool section was helpful. I had no idea there were two main types of colored pencils.
The step-by-step instructions section could be a little more step-by-step for beginners, though.
In short: not my cup of tea, but there are some techniques presented that you may find helpful.
This colorful and creative book is well designed with perfect instructions. I don't know if I will become an artist after reading this book and having it as a resource, but I will become a better artist. It is going to be helpful. The book has helpful projects and process, which work very well for anyone wanting to draw and create artwork.
The Colored Pencil guide offers information on which materials to use, illustrates the different techniques, and introduces colour theory. The step-by-step exercises guide you through the different stages of colour pencil drawing, from the basic shape of an object to how to best colour it to add texture and dimension.
I especially liked the section on "Travel Sketching".
This guide is best suited for advanced beginners at drawing.
How long has it been since you colored with pencil? There are all kinds of pencils out there now - ones to use dry or wet (draw or paint), expensive and cheap versions with dense color or just a bit of pigment. Regardless of what level of equipment you have in your bag, take out those pencils and start to record what you see. Entertain your kids with the how-to illustrations - art made easy.
If you wish you could go back to high school and learn how to sketch and play around with colored pencils, you'll enjoy this book. It's like having a basic tutorial without the pressures of making perfect pictures.
Art should be fun. This will help make it so for you!
I really enjoyed reading Anywhere, Anytime Art: Colored Pencil by Cara Hanley. I found this book sweet, well Illustrated throughout with step-by-step great instructions and exercises you can do anywhere. Within this book you learn who to draw basic things and gives you step-by-step guidelines covering things you may see everyday, houseplants, cats, dogs, camper vans, to cityscapes etc. I found it made drawing easier especially when you add colour with your coloured pencils.
and how to used these correctly especially how to blend the coloured pencils to make different colours.
Its a book good for adults and children.
This book would be good to be used in a classroom for young children as well, I found it fun and easy to follow.
Thanks to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster and Cara Hanley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
