This was a great poetry book. I always absolutely enjoy her work and I can't wait to read more in the near future. I highly recommend it.
I should just stop reading insta poets but the urge to review books with nice covers, keeps making me end up like this. This collection of poetry or rather fragments was not enjoyable at all. The fragments were cliché and bland, very fleeting and left me with nothing to savor. The only saving grace was the photographs.
This collection was hardly poetry. Each poem was just one to two lines of poetic sounding words, not actual poems. The photographs did make this collection very beautiful, but I was overall disappointed. Poetry should be longer and lyrical, not just a sentence on each page.
It's hard to classify this as a book of poetry, because there weren't any poems in it. No, instead we have single lines, little poem fragments next to photos of bits of nature on a white background. I am a big believer in short poetry, but these didn't even get to that point. They were single lines of bad Instagram poetry that is overdone and as cliched as possible.
It's not worth the five minutes it'll take you to read this.
Really beautiful read. The cover is beautiful and so are the pages within. Filled with short sweet lines, Heart Lines is a wonderful collection of poems that truly speak to the reader's heart. The aesthetics are very calming as well.
I'm not usually one to write harsh reviews because I know how tough it is to put your work out there, but I do feel really strongly about this book and want to give honest feedback. This was absolutely everything I despise about modern poetry all wrapped up into one. Was it visually appealing? Absolutely. Was it even remotely original? Not that I can tell. It was pretentious, cliche, cringey and felt like every single poetry book that has come out since Milk and Honey.
A delightfully readable collection. As someone who is not very much into poetry, this was easy to engage with and understand and the imagery and design of the book is lovely. A lot of the pages seem to be thoughts and reflections rather than complete poetry but it makes it no less enjoyable.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately, this collection left me quite disappointed. It feels generic, partly because of the themes explored, but mainly because of the language used.
Exploring romantic love and self-love, two universal themes that will always be talked about, in order for the book to stand out it has to rely on the language. The poems were lustreless, words felt too ordinary. They don’t feel polished and evoke the feeling the book was written too fast with little-to-no revision or editing.
Overall, this was quite underwhelming, but I will check out what the author publishes next.
Heart Lines is a really quick and beautiful read. The simplicity of the photos paired with the quick poems makes for a really great reading experience. Some of Gemma Troy’s verses were really gorgeous and profound, interspersed with some that were more light-hearted and cliché, but this certainly did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the collection.
