There are some useful information in this book. Unfortunately it took forever to read because the kindle version provided by Netgalley came across jumbled.
This was an ARC from NetGalley, but I was not able to properly read this book because some of the letters of the alphabet were replaced by other letters making it unreadable and for that reason I rated it 3 because I can't submit the review without a rating. I will update the rating if I can get a readable copy. I sent a message but received no reply. I'd love another copy to be able to review properly.
Most of us cannot afford a nutrition expert and typically healthy insurance doesn’t cover it unless it’s deemed medically necessary by your primary care physician. Thankfully, Tamara Duker Freuman provides us with valuable answers to questions involving bloating in her book “The Bloated Belly Whisperer.”
Tamara Freuman did not begin her career thinking she would become the “bloat whisperer,” but over her many years of working with patients she began to notice commonly-reported complaints and symptoms that went beyond usual mild reflux or gas. In her book she lists the 8 most common disorders that cause bloat, along with guidelines for how to treat them.
The book starts off with a short quiz aimed at narrowing down the possibilities of a personal diagnosis. Once you take the quiz it’s recommended you read the book straight through or just read the chapter or chapters that apply to you. Each chapter gives a summary of causes, what each disorder feels like, as well as what you can do to correct the issue.
Unlike some doctors who are eager to prescribe medication, supplements or surgery Tamara prefers to take a more natural approach first. As explained, there are a number of reasons for digestive problems such as bloating. “Bloating is a symptom of something else, not a medical condition unto itself,” says Freuman. Therefore, you can’t treat bloating without first discovering the problem. According to Tamara “In some cases, dietary change alone can completely control bloating. In other cases, medical therapy may be called for in addition to diet.”
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when a doctor suggests a diet change. To help you along your journal Tamara includes healthy recipes. There is also an entire chapter devoted to low-FODMAP diet choices that can help decrease discomfort overall. (FODMAP is an acronym for four hard-to-pronounce molecules found in food that many people have trouble digesting: fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. These are short-chain carbohydrates (sugars) that the small intestine absorbs poorly.)
If you suffer from severe or mild bloating this book is worth the read.As Tamara says, “Every unhappy belly is unhappy in its own way” and this book is amazing at helping diagnose and treat bloating problems. In addition to using clear, simple language Tamara makes it easy and motivating to follow with humor. A surprisingly fascinating read!
I was really interested in reading this ARC. However, there was so much missing information, I couldn’t even read it. I’m hoping my library has a copy I can borrow.
I have IBS and really enjoyed this book! It is a great resource for knowing what to eat in order to calm digestive disorders and while you can pick and choose what parts to read, I actually loved it so much that I read it through. I started with a digital copy but ended up buying a physical book of it as well!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC to give my honest feedback on this book.
This book provides valuable information in a clean but humorous way. I learned more about my digestive problems in the first couple chapters of this book. Tamara helps put a stop to common myths surrounding bloating and provides the latest evidence based on research. Her writing style is easy to read and kept me entertained the whole way through this book. It is not about selling supplements it is a book that actually helps you.
The Bloated Belly Whisperer discusses the causes of bloating and how to fix your digestive distress. After taking a quiz at the beginning, readers can choose which chapters seem most relevant to fix their issues. It makes it a more of a choose your own adventure book than a dense book about nutrition.
As someone who's struggled with bloating, this book was very helpful. I learned a lot about what could be causing my bloat and was able to use some of Freuman's strategies to help my digestive issues. The diet recommendations and recipes were extremely helpful to me. I would highly recommend for anyone who experiences bloat!
I've long had problems with my belly, so I picked this one up to get tips about how to straighten everything out. I liked how the book was laid out, with the first few chapters outlining information on stomach problems and then a quiz to help you narrow down your issues and the rest of the chapters meant for the reader to browse according to what their specific problems were. I felt a lot of the tips and information were general in nature but there was a lot of information provided. A lot of it tended to lean towards Paleo, something I haven't tried but I found a lot I could incorporate into my diet. It's a good resource for fellow belly sufferers and definitely recommended.
I have struggled with having "food babies" for years and honestly thought it was a normal occurrence that everyone struggled with. Turns out, I was wrong and that bloating can be the effect of a more serious, underlying issue. The Bloated Belly Whisperer takes you deep into the issue of bloating, helping you navigate through the many gut issues that a person could be facing, the symptoms associated with each issue, as well as tests and treatment options that you can discuss with your doctor. There is even a handy diagnosis quiz included to help you understand what might be causing your bloating.
Detailed diagrams and medical language that is put in layman's terms helps the reader feel confident about what they're reading and shows how well thought out and researched this book is! This is the comprehensive guide to bloating and gut health and I applaud the author for doing such an incredible job on this resource.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.

The best part about Tamara Duker Freumans book is the fact that although she is covering a clinical issue, the book is written in layman's terms. That alone made me want to share it with friends. There are so many ways to combat bloating, some good and some downright dangerous. I have personally had issues with bloating which made me want to dive into this book. Tamara talks about what the common causes are all the while adding humor. The tips she gives are easy enough to try. I have changed my diet and noticed a difference with my "tummy issues". The older we get our bodies start to betray us, having this book is a great resource and I highly recommend it. Use the guides that she provides with trying to diagnose what your issues are!
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for providing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review
Thank you St Martins Press and Netgalley for this ARC.
I found this book really interesting and packed full of tips and informative advice on how to reduce bloating. It was an easy book to read with quiz’s dotted throughout.
Thank you for offering great advice and suggestions to help all those with bloated bellies.
Interesting take on the belly. The book was hard to read because the e version on the kindle came across jumbled. I am sure this will be helpful to others with stomach issues.
I have suffered on and off with many digestive issues. These recipes were a welcome addition to my weekly meal rotation and I have recommended the book to others. Thank you for such an informative and well written book on dietary improvements that was not patronising or condescending. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.
In this book the author provides a questionnaire where readers can check off their gastrointestinal symptoms. I have diagnosed gluten sensitivity but my answers didn't match up with this. I felt the book had some good information but was lacking in advice on autoimmune disorders. Overall, I expected more. I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I found this title to be simply laid out, easy to read, and very informative. I think anyone with these types of issues would find it a beneficial read.
This was insightful and easy to read! It wasn’t over your head like these books can be, and was interesting and I learned things!
Bloated Belly fills the gap in the world of gut information as the public and medical professionals realize how much the gut plays into overall health and well being. Purchasing this for our library is a no brainer, our patrons can't get enough books on this under-researched topic. Writing is direct and understandable.
For everyone who has ever lived through an upset belly or excessive bloating, this book is everything you need! Written the way Fauman would hold a meeting with a new client, beginning with a quiz to help readers pinpoint specific symptoms.
From there she helps readers figure out specifically what questions to ask doctors, effective dietary changes, and healthy lifestyle changes to help combat chronic stomach bloat.
This is a great book for anyone looking for more information on the workings of their body, and how to keep them from uncomfortable bloating. It's an easy read, and Frauman offers simple tools to combat an unnecessary annoyance in life.
I found the title and premise of "The Bloated Belly Whisperer" exciting and lept into reading it. Unfortunately, it didn't give me any insight into my belly bloat, nor that of the three friends nearby.
The quiz was unreadable in the Kindle version of this book (as was anything in point form), so I skipped to the sections I knew were issues for me. All I got was a Web-MD -like explanation of my issue, along with medical interventions my doctor might suggest. Nothing about alternative options, different ways of eating, or dietary and lifestyle suggestions.
The book was well-written and easy to work through. I wish there was more here than basic information.
