Super cute and funny comic book. I’ve been following Adam on various social media platforms for a while so I’m very familiar with his work. I find his comics very relatable and amusing. The comics featuring his cats are always my favorites! Cute book.
I had an awesome time reading this collection!! I read it in one sitting, and it had me legitimately laughing out loud multiple times. It's equal parts heavy, adorable, and hilarious. A super fun, super cute, super chill (heh.. 😉) read that I would highly suggest to anyone who enjoys this format!
Adam Ellis has been on my radar for years, from his early days on tumblr, to employment at BuzzFeed, to branching out on his own; his overly dramatic sense of humor and style has always made me laugh, sometimes cackling like a mad witch.
These days, I look forward to his musings on Instagram, which are highly entertaining and relatable, and where he posts some of the comics featured in this book. The book is loosely arranged by various topics, including: daily life, work, travel, health, and holidays. I especially enjoy the comics featuring the general anxiety and ennui that comes with being a “millennial.” It’s freeing to know I’m not the only one who feels total panic at making phone calls or cancelling plans.
I think of Adam Ellis as one of the pinnacle artists of the four-panel webcomic explosion of the last decade. I’ve enjoyed watching his style and humor evolve, and I think people of a similar age will appreciate his work.
I have posted this review to Goodreads. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.
This was fun, but really not going to be useful in a children's library. I wouldn't hesitate putting it in the adult side. It will have a definite, although not huge audience.
I have followed Adam Ellis' work for some time and was so excited to see his work would be collected in book form. Super CHill includes great comics that tap into the real world in humour and entertaining way. He pokes fun of himself as well as us but we see these truths in the comics. That's why we laugh; because it's true. Ellis tells us a lot about life while making us laugh.
I would recommend this book to all my friends!
Adam Ellis is one of my favorite webcomic artists of all time, and Super Chill is a delightful collection of his comics that I think most anxiety-ridden millennials can relate to from start to finish. Or... maybe it's just me who also finds themselves succumbing to crystal collecting obsessions and feeling the pressing need to call my mom and ask her to schedule my appointments despite my being a grown woman?
Anyways...
This is adorable, and hilarious, and I love Adam Ellis. That is all.
Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I received an ARC copy of the book from a netgally in exchange for an honest review, Thank you!
I haven’t heard of the artist before so I was curious, I felt let down by the description since I really thought I was going to be a “year in a life” rather than a bunch of little moments without particular order or story line. Some of them were actually funny but for the most part I felt the images were post off tumblr.
Most of the mental health issues seen through the authors eyes seam very superficial, I know that laughter and comedy is a coping mechanism for most people with depression, but this one just felt flat for me. I don’t know why just there was something in the book that made me think “I’ve seen this before” the lack of originality is a big problem for me when it comes to comic books.
The artist has a talent for drawing and his colour choices were spot on, the perspective used for some of the scenes felt real. For that reason I can’t rate it any lower.
"From former Buzzfeed illustrator Adam Ellis comes a collection of autobiographical comics that follows a year in the artist s life.
Adam’s comics deal with weightier topics like seasonal affective disorder and struggles with self-esteem, while also touching on the silly and absurd like his brief, but intense obsession with crystals. With a bright, positive outlook and a sense of humor, Super Chill tells a story that is both highly relatable and intensely personal."
After this last year everyone should know Adam Ellis from his Dear David experience on Twitter. He's comics are far less interesting but still worth a look.
I got an ARC of this book.
So I am a fan of the comics by Ellis. I see them around and generally enjoy them. I enjoy his tumblr when I see it. I never go out of my way to find his stuff, because it is just everywhere. I generally enjoy and even laugh at the comics I do see.
However, this book didn't really do it for me. There were a few where I laughed internally, but nothing out loud. No snorting. No weird looks from my dog for the weird sounds I made. I read this with a straight face in maybe five minutes. Now that is even fast for the other webcomics that turned books that I have read and reviewed in the last year. Usually 15-20 minutes in the norm. This was five minutes from cover to cover. So if you are in the market for a short book, this is perfect.
Of all of the comics, I had only seen one of them before this publication. That is pretty darn rare with these types of books. I usually have seen at least a dozen or so comics or had seen more panels as memes. The only one I had seen before is the one where the hangnail is peeling. I remember that someone commented that he had missed another opportunity to draw his penis. His response back was what actually made me start following his blog.
The book itself read flat and emotionless. Like I knew that a great deal of the comics are about depression and mental illness. Humor is clearly a coping mechanism, but even then it was bland. I just wasn't impressed, which made me sad. I wanted to love this book and it be perfect. I wanted to post a glowing review because I generally think Ellis is a good guy and that we would get along (based on his blog posts, not this book). So I wanted to be able to say something nice to thank him for all of the times he has made me laugh and for the times he has been up front about not standing for hatred.
I do suggest following his blog, supporting him as an artist, and checking things out.
So I’ve loved Adam’s work on Instagram for awhile and I definitely like this collection. It’s very relatable as someone who suffers from anxiety. Some comics definitely stood out more than others and there were a few that I felt fell short. This is a super quick read. It was actually on the edge of being too quick and I really wished there was a little bit more to it. I would definitely pick this up if you are a fan of Adam’s work.
If you think this style of comic strips before, that is due to Ellis before a former Buzzfeed illustrator where he has posted his artwork before. Ellis even has his own instagram account as well where he shares his comics as well. Like in Super Chill, Ellis’s comics are based on his that are relatable to everyone else.
With humor, Ellis has managed to make his comics relatable will tons of laughter from readers. I even found a few that were extremely related to myself and couldn’t stop laughing as well. I have seen his comics before and when I saw this up for review, I couldn’t pass up the chance to see more of it. I have always liked the style and the humor. The comics were always something that made me laugh.
If you need a little something you brighten your day after a long, boring day, this is definitely something that can cheer you up. I really suggest it if you need a few laughs.
Super Chill is an interesting collection of short and fun comics filled with beautiful illustrations and vibrant colors. The characters were fun and the comics were relatable. This is my first book by this author and I'll be looking forward to reading more of his works. I highly recommend to everyone.
Thank you, NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Adam Ellis has done some of my favorite online comics that I've ever found. My favorite is not found in this book, and I don't know if I'm super behind on his comics, or if he's just been keeping all the good ones tucked away for this book, but I had never seen any of these. I was SUPER pumped because they are all incredibly hysterical.
He has a smart, sharp sense of humor, loads of self deprecating humor and second hand embarrassment. The trademark of any online comic, and it's done brilliantly. Beyond worth the read.
I wasn’t super into this book. Besides not being a fan of the general art style, I found a lot of the ‘relatable’ stories to be really juvenile. I’d recommend it for kids in the middle school to early high school age range.
Super Chill is a collection of former Buzzfeed employee Adam Ellis's webcomics. They feature Adam and some of his daily struggles and interactions from anxiousness about making a phone call, a fling with the "healing art" of crystals, his relationship with his cat, and more. However, the main theme is how Peal Millennial Adam is. And it's annoying. If this is how Boomers and others see Millennials, no wonder they think we're lazy, agoraphobic, children. Some may find Super Chill to be a mirror text, but for those who would see Millennials as a window, it distorts what the Millennial experience when they don't live in NYC or have a artsy-fartsy* job.
*I usually love artsy-fartsy, but this is just pretentiousness at its height. (And not, like, pretentiousness of yesteryear with high culture and posh-ness. No. More like pretentiousness with self-importance.)
⭐️4 stars⭐️
Short and funny read. I definitely enjoyed it.
The cat parts were probably my favorite!
I really enjoyed Adam's comedic take on dealing with both anxiety and depression, I feel that it gives levity to something that more and more people deal with on a daily basis. Overall a funny collection of comics that was a delight to read.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Andrews McMeel in exchange for an honest review.
Super Chill is another of those books that I found almost worryingly relatable. Especially the parts about Gudetama and diet cola.
I've always liked Adams art style and this book shows it off gorgeously.
I also laughed out loud several times which is definitely a good thing!
I saw Adam Ellis comics couple of times. I like his art style. It was simple and funny. I enjoyed a lot.
Super Chill by Adam Ellis is a gag-filled comic loosely based on the author's real-life experience.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE WORK
Though the art is eye-catching and neat, the writing is quite good - the understated wryness and honesty of the narration and dialogue bring out the best in this book.
DISLIKES
I did not get a few of the jokes. However, that might be due to my own default joke setting.
WHO IS IT FOR
People familiar with Adam's work will love more-of-the-same Super Chill. Newcomers who like reading funny comics strips will fall in love with the work.
Many thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing for review copy.
