A beautifully illustrated love letter to readers and the books they love, as well as the strange habits they develop, Book Love by Debbie Tung is the perfect gift for any reader. No matter what genre you prefer or where you stand on the e-reader versus physical book debate, this book celebrates the joy, magic and even comfort that reading brings to our lives. Prepare to chuckle in reluctant recognition as a fellow booksniffer, as you peruse the simply, yet perfectly illustrated pages that bring an artistic eloquence to a book with few words. Sigh in acceptance as you recognise your book buying habits laid bare for the world , and rejoice that you are not alone. in preferring a night with your favorite book to a night on the town.
I read and reviewed an ARC of this bookworm's delight, courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley, all opinions are my own.
This book was so cute! It was a very quick read and very relatable! I loved it! I think all bookworms will be able to relate to this one!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing and Debbie Tung for the opportunity to read and review this book - I loved it!
A graphic novel all about the love of books - what could be better? I felt like I was talking with someone who understood, who got me, who was a kindred spirit in our love of books. I laughed, I related - I loved this book! Even though I read so much on my Kindle now, there is still nothing like a "real" book. Even though I read this electronically, I have already pre-ordered the "real" book - every book lover will want this book.
Too bad it didn't publish before Christmas because it would be perfect for all book lovers on your list. However, it will be my New Year's gift to myself!
Happy Reading!
Oh gosh, what can I say? If you love graphic novels, love stories, and bookstores RUN don't walk to this one. I can't wait to purchase a hard copy of my very own. Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.
I’ve never read a graphic book before. But how could I resist a book called Book Love? It’s perfect. Anyone that loves books will totally relate to it. It will make you smile, as each page is spot on. Because “every day is a good day for books.” And yes, this is meant for those that read print books. But those of us addicted to our kindles still find plenty to love. Plus, if you’re of a “certain age” you will well remember the years before we had our kindles and the love of entering a book store of a second hand book sale or not having enough shelf space to deal with all the hundreds of books owned.
My thanks to netgalley and Andrew McMeel Publishing for an advance copy of this book.
Loved loved loved this book!!
I can't express how much happy I am by reading this wonderful piece. It's soo true and relatable and above so beautifully illustrated!! Sooo heart warming and magical though no magic here only the magic of art. A book I will reread!
Wonderful book for a booklover or non- booklover.
I think I can gift this to myself or my bestfriend for sure.
Although this book had a lot of relatable scenarios, it seemed a bit redundant and had quite a few of the same concepts as other cartoons. A quick read that book lovers will relate to, but nothing new.
Oh my god, if ever I thought an author was watching my life and using it for inspiration, this would be it. This is the perfect portrayal of book lovers in so many different ways. I loved seeing all the different quirks, emotions and habits of book lovers which I can definitely identify with. The flow of the book was quick and fun, often interchanging from humorous to meaningful. The art style was a beautiful sketch style that inserted just enough detail to make each character unique and each setting recognizable.
If you are a book lover or know someone who is a book lover this is a wonderful book to enjoy and share. It captures so much that is true about those of us who enjoy immersing ourselves in reading and books.
This delightful book of cartoons by Debbie Tung popped up a couple of times in my GR feed today, one review mentioning that it had come from NetGalley so I had a peek and, lucky me, there it was as Read Now... oh well if you insist...
This took about 15 minutes but my heart is totally warmed at all the ways she “gets” the true book lover. I found myself nodding internally every other page and wishing someone was here so I could show them - but only a true bookworm will relate... ironically my husband is away for work this weekend, which has turned into a wonderful little staycation of maximal reading opportunities.
This would make a fantastic little present for the readers in your life, I read the ebook but think a paper copy would be more meaningful to most. Unfortunately it doesn’t come out until January, as it would’ve been ideal as a Christmas present, but hey, it could be a late (or very early) one!
Thanks to NetGalley for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I read, (and adored), Debbie Tung’s previous book, Quiet Girl In A Noisy World earlier this year, so when I saw that she had this comedic graphic novel coming out, I requested it right away! Book Love is adorable and relatable and would make a perfect addition to any bibliophile’s shelf!! Debbie Tung’s art style is charming and these quirky comics will definitely have book lovers going “Hey! Same!!”
This is a book laid out in black and white comic book format depicting the many ways book lovers experience joy with their books. It's as simple as that! Each page has it's own example and message and if you're an avid reader you will relate. Some of the scenarios will cause you to laugh out loud in recognition and some will make your heart swell with joy, as you recognize all the ways in which you love your books. You like the feel of them, the cover art, you inhale that wonderful book smell, and when you walk into a library or book store you feel that euphoric thrill of expectation.
I saw myself in so many of these pages! Carrying a book around with me at all times (now it's thousands on a kindle), curling up with a book and a hot beverage in a comfortable chair or bed, preferring to read a book rather than converse or interact with people. One concept I really identified with is the feeling of travelling in a limitless fashion all over the world through reading. Also, walking into a library and thinking of the millions of stories mined within the treasured binding of beloved books.
When I was reading this, I would periodically laugh out loud and nod my head. It caught the attention of my husband, who never reads books. He asked me what I was laughing about and I told him it was a book that only book lovers would understand. As expected, he walked away in a disinterested fashion. In fact, when I write my reviews for arc's he can't understand why I'm doing it if I'm not getting paid for it monetarily. Then I tell him I AM getting paid for it...in the exchange of my pleasure for just reading the book. Well, he wouldn't understand...but, that's the point of this book, isn't it? If you're a book lover, you will see yourself in this book, and it will make you smile. I especially loved the full-page drawings, and imagined how nice one of them would look hanging on my wall.
Who is this amazing Debbie Tung and why did she write a comic about my life?! Really, this is an adorable, fantastic collection of comics that any bookworm will love.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
Book Love by Debbie Tung is a 2019 Andrews McMeel Publishing publication.
This adorable book is about me. This is me- well with a few slight exceptions. But, basically, if your life revolves around books- If you live them, breathe them, inhale them, hug them, collect them, share them, quote from them…. Etc, Etc. - This book is for you.
This book isn’t a story, it doesn’t have a plot, per se. It is basically a special gift for book lovers, a celebration and homage to books and book nerds. The comic drawings are not overly dramatic, but the expressiveness is what jumps out at you. The passion, the defensiveness and protectiveness towards books and our obsession with them, and the familiar frustration with people who just don't 'get it', resonated with me one hundred percent. I laughed so hard at the dialogue because I’ve said or done these things- often. I have had variations of these arguments and conversations and have had the exact same reactions, thoughts and feelings, at one time or another. The only difference for me is that I've been known to hug my Kindle in the same way I hug a print copy book. This happens more and more often now that I really have come to depend on that large font size- but, I understood the sentiment, all the same.
This book is short and sweet and so easy to relate to. You will see yourself in this book and appreciate the nod to book lovers, and may even experience a feeling of vindication, knowing that you are in good company. This book soothes my introverted soul in ways that may make my eyes leak just a little.
What I can say for sure, is that Debbie Tung is my kind of people. I may not know her personally, but I think she may know me.
5 Amazing Book Nerd Stars!!!
This is a very sweet comic book about book lovers that I think is very relatable for everyone who's an avid reader. It took very little time to get through it, and I enjoyed it, though I wasn't out-of-my-mind-enthusiastic like I first thought. The reason is that I expected something funny, I think. And I don't say it wasn't at all, but it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny. It's more like a 'touché, I do this all the time!' kind of funny. Which isn't a problem, it's just not completely what I expected. That being said, I could relate to most of the bookish quirks illustrated - some more than the others, but even those that weren't so adequate for me I could imagine for other enthusiastic readers they are.
This little book can be a very good gift if given to the right person. I actually have a friend I'm thinking of buying it for.
This book was everything I hoped it would be. The illustrations were adorable and any bookworm would feel that this was written about them. The perfect gift for any of your bookworm friends.
Thank you, NetGalley for the preview of this graphic novel.
I have come across many of Debbie Tung's comic strips along many social platforms. Book Love is so relatable in many ways. I would recommend this book to any bookworm.
Book nerds will love this and find themselves agreeing with almost every page! Simple but effective artwork gets the point across quickly and had me constantly laughing out loud! Every book lover needs this book.
Book Love is a fantastic collection of comics all based of the love of reading. Very relatable, funny and often cute.
I really enjoyed his book, as a book lover it was completely relatable, and I kept wanting to send copies to my friends! It's one I'll definitely tell my book friends to read
This is the perfect little reminder that bookworms are in good company. Many of the comics are familiar themes in the bookish community, others are unique to Tung. The illustrations are beautifully detailed, in a clean line style. Definitely a heartwarming read for me.
