I did not have time to download and read this book before it was archived, so I'm unable to leave a review.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly I don't know how I feel about this book. The pictures were interesting and it was a neat concept, but the gators are kind of terrifying.
Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast is a heartwarming and exciting story about a doctor who treats crocodiles, and in exchange they tell her stories of their adventures. One day, the biggest, meanest crocodile shows up and little doctor is determined to help her. I enjoyed this sweet little tale, because it shows that kindness is important and that what seems big and scary may surprise you if you just give it a chance.

The story that goes along with Sophie Gilmore's mutely coloured illustrations in Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast is just lovely. It's about a little doctor (girl) who helps all the crocodiles in her area that are injured, even the mean ones. Without jamming the idea of: preserving the environment (as some of the crocodiles injuries are from human garbage) or eliminating discrimination we are engaged in a story that 'talks' (without talking) about both. I love how subtle and clever Gilmore has been with the illustrations enhancing the message of the actual text. Sometimes things are better left unsaid.
This writer/illustrator, originally from Britain (who now lives in Italy) has done a great job at creating a children's book with enough story to feel complete and words that lyrically roll off the tongue when read aloud. This is a gem of a book and one I could see many children wanting read to them night and night again. Let's hope the children subconsciously understand the garbage and discrimination points that lie under the story of a doctor who wanted to help everyone, no matter what.
Reminds me of older past children’s books. It was cute and has many little lessons such as animal conservation, kindness, not judging a book by its cover
A story about a little doctor with a big problem. This book will encourage readers to face bigger and more fearful problems with the mindset of problem solving. The illustrations are fantastic and offer the reader and listener a wealth of opportunity to discuss the action while building reading comprehension and narrative skills.
A different kind of tale (tail?) - pretty cool. I didn’t see where this was going.
Plus, I like kids’ books about bravery. This would have been fun to read to my kids when they were little.
Thanks to NetGalley and Owlkids Books for a copy in return for an honest review.
Cute, pictures are fantastic and very detailed. Kids spent a lot of time just looking at the pictures lol Story ended kind of abruptly but not so much that it would ruin the story.
Adorable picture book! A great story about frustration and then stepping back and doing hard things. Little Doctor is brave and patient and kind. Let characteristics for children. Beautiful water color illustrations with great details that will keep kids attention.
This parable tells about a young girl who takes care of the biggest and vicious animals in her neighbourhood. When the meanest and most vicious crocodile comes to her for help, she wants to solve it, but it going to be difficult. With some ingenuity and daring, she is able to help the reptile. This is a retelling of the lion and the mouse. Of course you can also use this tale to talk about the environment and what happens when you are not careful with waste products. I really liked the illustrations. They are done in muted colours to show the tone of the story with great expression and emotion evident. A great book to use with students when teaching about parables, morals, lessons, character development etc. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
A crocodile retelling of the lion and the mouse. The Big Mean crocodile has a problem, and little doctor wants to solve it. But it will take some daring and some cleverness to get the job done. The illustrations are lovely, and the story while common, was told in an endearing way.
I love a great book by a debut author. Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast is the debut picture book by authorstrator Sophie Gilmore. What a charming book it is indeed.
The illustrations are lush and detailed, transporting the reader to Little Doctor’s clinic among the crocodiles. Full of fantasy and fearless beasts, Sophie Gilmore creates a little corner of a special world all for the crocodiles and Little Doctor.
Beyond the gorgeous illustrations, Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast reads just like a folktale with adventure, suspense and a message in the end. Sophie Gilmore weaves the words to the story so elegantly, it lends itself to being shared with a group of children, and even adults, in a read aloud, or better yet as a story in the oral tradition. When I was reading Little Doctor I was transported back to my childhood. It is a story that reminds me of my uncle who is a fantastic storyteller and would never spare the frightening details, mesmerizing us all. Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast will do the same. It will captivate and entertain. I know when you share this story with children, you will have the quietest group as they will be take in right from the first page. In the end there are subtle messages about caring for creatures big and small as well as demonstrating how trust can make you brave and daring. I’m curious if the author had a similar experience of enjoying storytelling as a child as I feel like Little Doctor has all the makings of a classic.
Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast by Sophie Gilmore is a very beautifully illustrated book that students and children in the target audience will love.
For those with children that love animals, playing doctor, or are just curious about how to treat animals when they get sick, Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast is perfect for them.
ARC Copy...a cute but beautiful parable of a brave yet caring young lady doctor caring for the "vicious" creatures in her neighborhood and still showing the thoughtfulness towards the biggest and meanest reptile int he area. Also an environmental parable when the big mean's problem is revealed.
I can only hope the plastic pop can holder illustrations rings a bell in folks minds. Those things should be banned! But that's getting way ahead of the story. Little doctor heals all the critters that come to her and each tells her a tale in return for her aid. One day, Big Mean shows up and won't allow Little Doctor to examine her or even tell her whats wrong. Little Doctor eventually ends up in Big Mean's mouth! And I';; leave it there for the surprise. Littles will enjoy this story. It's a good one. Adults- cut up those plastic pop can holders before throwing them away! teach the kiddos to do the same! Loved the illustrations!
Nice clean children's story of a child practicing to be a veterinarian in the swamps of Louisiana. (I am presuming Louisiana because of the gators and lack of supervision and canned six pack beverage consumption) Teaches children important values such as patience and trust. The most important lesson in this story is being aware of waste and recycling.
This is such a sweet book!! I loved the illustrations that went along with the story. This book will hold the child's attention from the beginning until the end, and don't be surprised when they say "read it again'. Thank you Owlkids Books via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.
Gilmore's illustrations are a wonderful throwback to older books and tell the tale of Little Doctor and the crocodiles that she treats. Her patients tell her stories of other monsters and one day a large, mean crocodile comes for help but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. Little Doctor doesn't give up though, and soon Big Mean (and her babies) entertains Little Doctor and the other crocodiles with stories of her own.
This is a cute story about never giving up.
Thank you NetGalley and Owlkids for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy.
