Description
When one creative idea lands Little Doctor right inside Big Mean’s tremendous jaws, she is sure she’ll be munched or crunched—until she sees that Big Mean isn’t so horrible, after all. As it turns out, the crocodile is only protecting her hatchlings, all tangled in plastic, inside her mouth.
Watercolor illustrations create a richly imagined world in this awe-inspiring story about how even little kids can be fearless, and even big, mean creatures sometimes need help.

Gilmore's illustrations are a wonderful throwback to older books and tell the tale of Little Doctor and the crocodiles that she treats. Her patients tell her stories of other monsters and one day a large, mean crocodile comes for help but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. Little Doctor doesn't give up though, and soon Big Mean (and her babies) entertains Little Doctor and the other crocodiles with stories of her own.
This is a cute story about never giving up.
Thank you NetGalley and Owlkids for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy.
Nice clean children's story of a child practicing to be a veterinarian in the swamps of Louisiana. (I am presuming Louisiana because of the gators and lack of supervision and canned six pack beverage consumption) Teaches children important values such as patience and trust. The most important lesson in this story is being aware of waste and recycling.
Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast by Sophie Gilmore is a very beautifully illustrated book that students and children in the target audience will love.
For those with children that love animals, playing doctor, or are just curious about how to treat animals when they get sick, Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast is perfect for them.
I love a great book by a debut author. Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast is the debut picture book by authorstrator Sophie Gilmore. What a charming book it is indeed.
The illustrations are lush and detailed, transporting the reader to Little Doctor’s clinic among the crocodiles. Full of fantasy and fearless beasts, Sophie Gilmore creates a little corner of a special world all for the crocodiles and Little Doctor.
Beyond the gorgeous illustrations, Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast reads just like a folktale with adventure, suspense and a message in the end. Sophie Gilmore weaves the words to the story so elegantly, it lends itself to being shared with a group of children, and even adults, in a read aloud, or better yet as a story in the oral tradition. When I was reading Little Doctor I was transported back to my childhood. It is a story that reminds me of my uncle who is a fantastic storyteller and would never spare the frightening details, mesmerizing us all. Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast will do the same. It will captivate and entertain. I know when you share this story with children, you will have the quietest group as they will be take in right from the first page. In the end there are subtle messages about caring for creatures big and small as well as demonstrating how trust can make you brave and daring. I’m curious if the author had a similar experience of enjoying storytelling as a child as I feel like Little Doctor has all the makings of a classic.
A crocodile retelling of the lion and the mouse. The Big Mean crocodile has a problem, and little doctor wants to solve it. But it will take some daring and some cleverness to get the job done. The illustrations are lovely, and the story while common, was told in an endearing way.
This parable tells about a young girl who takes care of the biggest and vicious animals in her neighbourhood. When the meanest and most vicious crocodile comes to her for help, she wants to solve it, but it going to be difficult. With some ingenuity and daring, she is able to help the reptile. This is a retelling of the lion and the mouse. Of course you can also use this tale to talk about the environment and what happens when you are not careful with waste products. I really liked the illustrations. They are done in muted colours to show the tone of the story with great expression and emotion evident. A great book to use with students when teaching about parables, morals, lessons, character development etc. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
Adorable picture book! A great story about frustration and then stepping back and doing hard things. Little Doctor is brave and patient and kind. Let characteristics for children. Beautiful water color illustrations with great details that will keep kids attention.
