I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is a second chance romance between Mandy and Chase. I like the hot SEAL as a hero with sweet Mandy. I gave this book a 2nd chance too by reading it. Now ill have to check out her other books.
I raced through this book fairly quickly. Both main characters are likable and I felt their chemistry through the pages. The storyline was easy to follow but didn’t have any twists or turns so I’m giving 4 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Excellent story, characters, plot, and steaminess to keep turning the pages. This book is well written and I am looking forward to more book by the author.
I think this is the first romantic suspense novel I've read that was written from mostly the hero's POV. Or at least where he's the one going through most of the suspenseful parts.
I enjoyed this though, though I still prefer a slow burn romance over a second chance romance!
First in the Seal and veteran series brings Chance back home where Mandy is working on her business and surviving. First love grows again as these two find a future.
Ebook from Netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
Chance has returned home after retiring from being a Navy Seal. Life should be great but it isn’t since he must pick up the pieces of his father’s death. Encountering Mandy seemed almost unbearable. He had been so close to proposing until everything fell apart like sand in an hour glass. Keeping her from danger will be a walk in the park since nothing else matters. Having Mandy agree is entirely something that may never happen. Great start to a new series.
The things I like about this story is the second chance, high school sweethearts and Mandy's career. I liked the feel of suspense due to Mandy's past. I liked Chance completely. I liked that it was a fast paced story that was a short read.
SEAL'S HOMECOMING by Leslie North. The second chance tale of Mandy and Chance. This was an enjoyable read that made me smile. It was over the top angst and there's a bit of danger involved as well. In all honesty, it was a bit too short for me - I would have liked it drawn out a touch more to watch Chance and Mandy's love bloom once again. I did believe their feelings for each other though, and seeing big, tough SEAL Chance in action and defending his girl, was a bit swoon-worthy! It's a quick read and well worth it. (received ARC for honest review)
I am hooked on every Leslie North book that comes out. This one didn't disappoint. It had it all. Must read.
This is the second novel I've read by this author, and I wasn't terribly impressed with the first one I read, but SEALs and a second chance romance pretty much had me from the get-go. I'm sorry to say that while I found this a short, sexy, and mildly entertaining read, I had more than a few issues with it, and for that reason, I'm giving it 2.5 stars.
I liked the idea of this story--the 3 McCallister brothers, all retiring from the military at around the same time, some voluntarily, one as the result of an accident, leaving the sniper brother with a vision impairment and a medical discharge. They are all back in their hometown to attend their father's funeral and then to decide how to pick up their civilian lives.
The primary character in this novel is Chance McAllister, the eldest, whose high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Mandy Loomis, broke up with him on the same night he told her of his enlistment in the Navy, and planned to propose to and marry her before boot camp. She was so furious that he never even consulted her before he enlisted, she told him she wanted no further contact with him at all, and that's exactly what she got to go along with her broken heart for the next 12 years.
Fast forward 12 years, and after his father's funeral, Chance shows up at the Loomis garage, which was his home away from home for years, only to learn that Mandy inherited the garage after her father's death 2 years earlier, and the information she's keeping from Chase, is that she also inherited her father's gambling debts, and has been trying her best to pay off the loan sharks for the past two years. but no matter how hard she tries, she can't keep up with the payments. Chance has already encountered the slimeball debt collector, and is ready, willing and able to help Mandy, but she won't tell him the truth about her situation, which is where I began to have a problem with this story.
Mandy and Chance have explosive chemistry, and so she's perfectly willing to have a whole lot of hot sex with the man, but by the fifth or sixth time I read about the size and strength of his erections, it grew rather tiresome. I don't mind reading explicit sex scenes, but when they take the place of any real communication between the parties involved, and when there is virtually no character development from the beginning to the end of a novel, I feel as if the author took the easy way out plot-wise.
Then there's the issue of Mandy's debt problems, and her utter refusal to let Chance help her, and he only learns how it happened from her roommate. Mandy broke up with Chance because he didn't consult with her about his plans to enlist, but he does it again by going behind her back to find out what's going on. I can understand Mandy not wanting Chance to be hurt, but hello, he's a Navy SEAL after all!
In addition to the aforementioned hot sex, both main characters spend most of the novel in their own heads, trying decide if they still love one another, which also became redundant. There was more than enough time and space to include something that was sorely missing--why did these two people fall in love in the first place? We learn that they lost their virginity to each other back in high school, but never does the author explain what drew these two characters together other than sexual chemistry, and the fact that Chance liked to help Mandy's father work in his garage. While I can see the appeal of a hot, hunky Navy SEAL, we never learn what drew Chance to Mandy outside of her often-mentioned physical appearance and their sexual chemistry. I consider this a rather large oversight, especially since even at the HEA ending, I still had no idea what these two characters would see in each other once the sexual fire between them dimmed after several years of marriage.
There were so many missed opportunities for real emotional depth and growth in this novel, and for this second-chance romance to really be a romance, rather than being a rather shallow story about two sex-crazed former high school sweethearts who have been apart for 12 years, have not gotten past their hots for each other, and a rather unoriginal plot about an unpaid debt to a loan-shark, a faux kidnapping, and a rescue, all leading to the HEA ending.
If you're looking for a quick, steamy read without much depth, character development, or real involvement with the main characters, you'll probably enjoy this short novel far more than I did.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
As high school sweethearts, Chance and Amanda's lives took different paths. When Chance comes home from the military, he sees that things for Mandy have not been easy. Finding that she is in real trouble, the story becomes fast paced as Chance jumps into the danger, putting himself between Mandy and the loan sharks. Their story is romantic, and filled with suspense, as these two rekindle love again. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley, with no compensation. My review is voluntary. 4.5 Stars!
I couldn't finish the book. I got about 50% into it and put it down. I liked the story. Chance McAllister left to join the Navy and eventually became a SEAL. When he left town, he left Mandy behind. Each of them feels the other left them and now that Chance is back their chemistry is off the charts.
Mandy is having to pay for her father's gambling debts with a bookie and his thugs. When Chance discovers what is going on, he wants to protect Mandy and take care of her.
I think this story has a lot of potential but the turnoff for me was the constant reference to or innuendo or blatant sexual descriptions. It seemed to detract from the story. It was if the story was secondary. Just a personal preference but not my cup of tea.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
SEAL’s HOMECOMING kicks off the SEAL & Veteran series with a fast-paced second chance romance between onetime high school sweethearts who were torn apart by circumstance and a choice. Now, more than a decade later, Chance is back in his hometown – and Mandy is in serious trouble… and that old spark, it’s still there.
I had fun in Leslie North’s new world. The characters are engaging and likable, their history makes Mandy and Chance’s past and future blend together in an all grown up now way I liked Mandy’s independence, yet if anyone could help her in this situation it would be Chance.
If you enjoy a second chance romance with a touch of suspense and a likable couple with engaging secondary characters who will one day have their own tale told, then you’ll enjoy SEAL’s HOMECOMING.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I was a bit underwhelmed by SEAL's Homecoming. I felt like there was so much telling us what happened instead of showing us. I prefer to be an observer to the action as opposed to an "eavesdropper". I was also a little irritated with Mandy and her initial need to keep what was going on from Chance to protect him. He is a SEAL for goodness sake. I'm pretty sure he could handle the situation WAY better than she could. I think this was supposed to show how strong and independent Mandy was. I think she showed better sense when she finally shared what was going on with Chance. All in all, a quick second chance romance.
I really love Chance. He’s everything you’d want him to be and Mandy seems perfect for him. The fact that he kept her picture with him for 12 years is heartbreaking. Love a hea.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Relay Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first book in a series. I personally couldn't connect, this is a second chance romance. I rate this a 3.
A fabulous read, with great characters, an engaging storyline what a way to start a new series!! A novella length story that encompasses everything you want in a great romance. I love it and look forward to reading more
I was given advanced copy for an honest review.
This is a steamy love story. Chance is a navy seal who has returned home to care for his dying father. His father dies to soon from him leaving his Seal team and he is trying to find out what to do now. It doesn’t take long for him to come face to face with his high school sweetheart that broke his heart. Mandy is still angry after 12 yrs that Chance went into the Navy, feeling he was leaving her behind she broke up with him shattering their possible future together.
Mandy father has died leaving her the garage, but he also left gambling debts she was being forced to pay. It does not take long for Chance to see she is in trouble. There love from years ago sparks and they both struggle with forgiveness for the pain they caused each other.
Can Chance get Mandy’s garage out of the mess with the loan shark? Can they find a way forward with their relationship?
5 Star reviews are not something I normally provide for novella length books, but SEAL’s Homecoming (first book in Leslie North’s new SEAL & Veterans series) has everything a romance reader could possibly want. Great world building, an interesting back story and the undeniable angst and sexual tension that comes when faced with a lover from a decade pasted and lingering unresolved issues.
Chance and Mandy are engaging characters with strong personalities and deep emotions and painful memories of what could have been. Their parting was wounding, and left much unexplained; but the time that has passed since Chance enlisted and deployed overseas has done nothing to cool the combustible connection that was always a part of their lively relationship.
I loved everything about this book and the characters were definitely portrayed to perfection. I can’t wait the read both Harris and Lee’s stories.
