I loved this book! It's well-written, enjoyable, and a great read. Sandie Jones is a favorite author of mine, and always does a great job of writing in a way that captures the readers attention, and makes you not want to put it down until you're finished! I would highly recommend it!
What did I just read? Drama, drama, drama! I felt like I was reading a very dramatic and unrealistic soap opera. The first half of the book was very slow going. It started to pick up about halfway. Then all of sudden the ending or unfolding of the story was rushed and very abrupt. I thought this was just an okay read for me.
**Thank you to @netgalley and @minotaurbooks for the copy in exchange for an honest review. Review not posted to Amazon because less than 4 stars.**
I loved this book! Thank you for the ARC. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I wasn’t leaving reviews on netgalley and was solely sharing on Instagram. My apologies. Huge fan of this author! I actually received the tangible copy. Trying to clean up my netgally account.
A intense domestic psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
This story has a bit of everything
Cheating husbands
Betrayal
Double lives
Lies
Quick read but one that will keep you engaged throughout the whole book.
I felt so much for the main character, Alice. After the love of her life dies, she had to start over. But even though she never completely got over losing her husband (which brought on a lot of emotional/mental turmoil), Alice ends up remarrying a wonderful man and having another child. Through all of her challenges, her best friend, Beth, is there. The story goes back and forth between past and present and from the point of view of each woman. There are some surprising twists and some VERY surprising twists. As I read this book, I thought of so many alternate endings, but none were what actually happened. Great job to the author for keeping me in suspense! Thanks to Netgalley for the advance copy
“The First Mistake” is an unusual thriller. Things seem to be happy and peaceful for Alice with her business, children, and her second husband. However, like all thrillers, there is an unusual undercurrent of distrust, betrayal, and duplicity. The story is told from several points of view, and sometimes, deliberately it seems, it is hard to sort out just who is who.
The pace is steady and deliberate. The characters seem likeable, but somehow not entirely trustworthy. The people and relationships are right out of a soap opera and are just as enjoyable. Alice, the wife, seems trusting and yet suspicious, dependent and yet determined to be a successful independent business owner. The friend, Beth, is supportive and yet disloyal. The second husband, Nathan, is understanding while living in the shadow of the “perfect” first husband and yet, well, just read and find out about him. In the end, none of those descriptions is completely accurate, and that contradiction makes the book compelling. Readers instinctively know something is wrong, very wrong, but cannot discern exactly what that is.
“The First Mistake” is an easy book to read and full of psychological suspense and treachery. The title alludes to a first mistake, but there are so many mistakes, it is hard to pinpoint the first one. There is drama, betrayal, and crime but little actual violence and certainly no buckets of blood running in the streets. The story unfolds easily and then comes to a shocking and tragic end.

No one is honest, no one is innocent;
this was ok. The story was good, but a lot of it was predictable. I didn't have to guess to much to get the right answer.
I think the term Thriller is much too widely used. This is a Domestic Suspense but I wouldn’t consider it a Thriller.
At the beginning of this book I thought, ‘Oh here we go. Another cheating husband who makes the wife think she has mental problems.’ I almost did a DNF because I’m just SO OVER THOSE STORIES.
I quickly checked out the reviews and I saw so many high ratings that I decided to stick with it. I’m so glad I did. It was a completely different book than what the beginning suggested it would be.
Several fun twists that I didn’t expect. I enjoyed this one.
Domestic Suspense fans will enjoy this one.
Thank you to #MinotaurBooks and #Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
I have read all of Sandy Jones books and this one was another fast paced read. I read this book in less than a day, could not put it down.
This was my first Sandie Jones book, but I've heard good things about her books previously. This book is a difficult one for me to review because there were elements I liked and some things that just didn't work for me. The main thing that prevents this from being a 4 or 5-star read is that there were just too many ambiguous things that left me with questions. I hate having to deal with loose ends in a story!
The plotlines in themselves aren't too exciting, and I didn't think it was necessary to have the book divided into two narrators. It left the pacing off in the middle when more of the action should have been ramping up. However, despite this, I did feel compelled to keep reading to see where the story was going, and this is generally a good sign for a book I'm reading.
Overall, if I read positive reviews of her future work, I'd still probably consider checking it out, but I don't think I would classify her as a fave author right now.
I highly enjoyed this twisty thriller from start to finish. I loved that I was able to guess some things along the way but that I was often surprised. Alice and Beth were awesome characters to read about even though I felt I couldn't trust anything along the way. Overall, it was a fast a fun thriller and I will be recommending this to all mystery, thriller and suspense fans.
Oh this is the perfect summer thriller! This book will definitely keep you guessing and when you think you’ve figured it out , guess what? The author just jumbles it all up. This is a great fun entertaining psychological thriller.
The First Mistake is a fast read--and that's because everyone and everything in it will be familiar if you've ever read a thriller. There was nothing wrong with it. There just wasn't anything we havent seen before.
Alice has moved through the death of her first husband. She has a new husband and a wonderful best friend who she trusts completely. When her husband start acting strangely, she of course turns to her best friend. Maybe that was the wrong move......
I never could get into this one. It may be great but it just wasn’t ever for me.someone else I sure to enjoy this book but unfortunately it never grabbed my attention. I started reading romance books and was never able to dive fully into this one
Ouch! This was a highly entertaining domestic thriller with plenty of twists and turns! I was open mouth quite a bit, feeling sorry for Alice. I think..lol….
I received a copy of the book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I had a really hard time getting into this one but I powered through. It got better but it wasn't the most original work or the best I've read by this author.
A wild ride that is told in a Big Little Lies meets The Woman in the Window manner. This book had me gripped from the get go and is a fast-paced read. I’m eager to read more from Jones.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
The synopsis of this book sounded intriguing to me so I requested a copy to read.
Unfortunately, I have tried reading this book on 2 separate occasions and during this 2nd attempt, I have
decided to stop reading this book
and state that this book just wasn't for me.
Slow burn of a domestic suspense novel. Trustworthy characters turn suspicious throughout the entire novel. Bits and pieces of the story are slowly revealed to the reader, leading up to a bang of a finish. Great poolside summer thriller.
